BAPTIZED IN CHRIST
Congratulations to our recently baptized parishioner, Archie Michael
Geisz, child of Ian and Angela Geisz, baptized in Christ on October
17, 2015 at St. Raphael the Archangel Church.
May the blessing of the Lord be always upon him and may God
watch over and cherish this child, whom God has blessed with the
grace of Baptism.

PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Parishioners,
It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that Archbishop Carlson has appointed me to be the pastor of
Queen of All Saints Parish with the effective date of November 17th. It is unusual that an appointment
would come at this time of the year, but this particular case is a result of the passing away of the pastor of
the Cathedral this summer. There are no words to express how difficult it will be to leave Saint Raphael the
Archangel Parish.
This parish will always have a special place in my heart, as it was here that I first became a pastor and
learned so much from all of you. You taught me in so many ways about what it means to be the shepherd
of a flock and for that I am so grateful. Over the next few weeks, as I prepare for this move, I ask for your
support and prayers. It will not be easy leaving a loving and caring parish. I will say this over and over
again, but thank you ever so much for all you have done to support me in my time here.
As we move forward over the next few weeks, there is still much work to be accomplished. I would like to
draw your attention to the coming Solemnity of All Saints which will be celebrated next Sunday, November
1st and is a Holy Day of Obligation.
As we enter into the month of November, we commemorate All Souls Day, Monday, November 2, by remembering our deceased relatives and friends. This year, we invite family members of parishioners who
have passed away within the past year to a special Mass at 7:00 p.m. We will remember each of these loved
ones in our petitions, and you will see candles on the altars of Our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph. These
symbolize the lives of the loved ones who have left us this year.
It was in the middle of the 11th century that St. Odilo, abbot of Cluny (France), decreed that all Cluniac
monasteries offer special prayers and sing the Office for the Dead on November 2, the day after the feast of
All Saints. The custom spread from Cluny and was finally adopted throughout the Roman Church.
Throughout the month of November, the Book of the Dead will be located near the altar of Saint Joseph.
Please feel free to inscribe the names of your loved ones in this book so that we may remember them.
Our Black and Gold School Auction will soon be upon us. Don’t forget to purchase your ticket for this
year’s auction. Many parishioners and school families have already made plans to attend this wonderful
event. If you haven’t attended the dinner auction before at Saint Raphael the Archangel, why not make
plans to come this year? This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the many wonderful things that are
happening in our school and to elicit the support of the wider community.
I would particularly like to highlight our preview night. If you can’t make it to the auction or would like to
support our school in a more casual atmosphere, you might think of attending this special evening on Friday, November 6th. It will feature a special beer-tasting hosted by Rob Naylor, Head Brewer of Anheuser
Busch, InBev Research Pilot Brewery. What can you expect in the evening? Rob will walk us through the
brewing process and the tasting of 12 different beers. Thank you in advance for your support of our school
through the Black and Gold School Auction.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“And Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has
made you well.’ And immediately he received his
sight and followed him on the way.” (Mark 10:52)
Faith is believing in something even though you may
not be able to see it. Many people think that miracles
don’t happen anymore. But, if you focus on the positive, not the negative, focus on your blessings instead
of your hardships, miracles will seem common.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus asks Bartimaeus: “What do you want me to do for you?” And he answers,
“Master, I want to see.” Let us ask Jesus for the grace to “see” our brothers and sisters who are poor and lonely through our own St. Vincent De Paul Society.

PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN
Dear St. Raphael School Families,
We are off to a great start in the 2nd Quarter of our school year, and we are looking forward to Parent Teacher
Conferences next week when we can share with you all the good learning news about your kids. Report Cards
will be available for online viewing on Alma, Monday, October 26th at 3pm. If you’d like us to send home a
paper copy of the report card on Tuesday, please let us know by emailing Mrs. Mechler with that request at
secretary@straphaelarchangel.org. Just as a reminder to our Preschool and Kindergarten parents: Kindergarten
receives report cards for Quarters 2, 3, and 4, Preschool in January and again in May.
I am so happy to report that we have received our students’ Iowa Assessment scores for this school year, and
the overall scores reflect quite a bit of progress over the past 4 school years. Our classes have achieved statistically significant increases in EVERY subject area from the 2012 tests to the 2015 tests. And our classes are
now scoring ABOVE national averages in EVERY subject area in EVERY grade level; we are so proud of our
students!

ADVENT BY CANDLELIGHT
Advent by Candlelight is an invitation for women to step away from hectic Christmas activities and instead
focus on the inner preparation which is the purpose of the Advent season in readying our hearts and homes to
receive the gift of the infant Jesus.
The evening opens with hostesses greeting their guests and general visiting among all those present. Then it
continues with a short prayer service, followed by sharing of light hors d’ouevres or dessert* provided by
each hostess for her particular table, and concludes with a guest speaker who never fails to inspire us.
We are very excited this year to have Fr. Matthew O’Toole, Pastor of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, here with us. Many of you will remember Fr.
O’Toole from his assignment as Associate Pastor here at St. Raphael from
1996 - 2001. The Holy Spirit is working through him to do wonderful things
at St. Margaret of Scotland, and we are confident that his words will leave us
with much to ponder in our hearts as we move through the Advent season.
Please consider being a table hostess and treating your friends, relatives or
neighbors to this special event. The duties of a table hostess include reserving
a table, inviting up to 7 more guests (8 people per table), decorating your table
and providing table settings and light appetizers / desserts for your guests.
More detailed information will be given to each hostess.
*This year we are encouraging hostesses to keep their food very simple in trying to keep with our desire to
offer a less stressful, more peaceful and enjoyable evening among friends.
This is a FREE event, but we do take up a collection for Our Lady’s Inn if you would like to contribute that
evening.

State law requires clinics like the St. Louis Planned
Parenthood facility to send tissue samples from
aborted fetuses to a board certified pathologist for
study. But a private company is under no obligation
to accept such tissue.
At the present time, St. Louis Planned Parenthood
sends its tissue samples to Pathology Services, Inc. a private company - located on Brentwood Boulevard. This lab accepts the remains of children up to
the 20th and 21st week of fetal development, according to an investigation by Missouri Attorney General
Koster.
Please take the time to write a letter to the address
below, asking the doctor to stop aiding St. Louis
