Time sure flies. It is hard to believe that
the school year is coming to a close. It
has been a wonderful year at Mountain
View thanks to our dedicated staff,
students and parents. I want to thank
Yael Brennan, our PTA President, Carin
Ezal, PTA Vice-President, and all of our
PTA board members, event coordinators,
and volunteers for their dedication to our
school. I also want to thank Anita LaBau
for her tireless work in preparing our
Viewpoints newsletter every month.

teacher, friend and mentor.

View School will not be the same without
her.
Our PTA provides so many important and
enriching experiences for our students.
They also organize fun activities that help
us celebrate a great school year and build
our school community.
Our school
carnival is a prime example. We had
record crowds and fun this year thanks to
the hard work of parents and the carnival
coordinators,

Sommer and Devon Stewart.
First Grade:

The Sixth Grade Graduation Ceremony
will be held on Tuesday, June 9, in the
grass area in the front of the school.
Seats will be available at 5:00 p.m. and
the ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. The
sixth grade class has created a beautiful
tile mural that has been mounted on the
wall outside of Mrs. Gallo’s kindergarten
classroom.

The last day of school is Friday, June 12.
Primary grade students will have their field
day in the morning. Parents are welcome
to come and help out at the stations.
School will end at 11:40 a.m. for first
through
sixth
grade
students.
Kindergarten students will be dismissed at
11:15 a.m. The cafeteria will serve lunch
on that day. Please make sure your child
knows if they will buy lunch or not.
The 2015–2016 school year will start on
Wednesday, August 26. Tentative class
lists will be posted on Tuesday, August 25,
at 2:00 p.m. You may then visit the
classroom of your child’s new teacher from
2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Notes from the PTA President
Congratulations to our
graduating class of 2015
and their families!
Sixth grade is a big year
academically and socially and
these last few weeks of school
are filled with special events
for our wonderful graduates. A big thanks to all the
parents who volunteered their time to support this
class of students.
This was a wonderful year of new and returning
Cultural Arts performances. Thanks to Lisa Vance
and Dawn Mock for coordinating our Cultural Arts
activities all year. Peruvian musicians Inca came last
week and the Dancing Scientist will come the first
week in June to finish out the year. Thanks also to
Mona Lehman and her book fair team as well as
Anita LaBau and her book swap helpers.
This year’s carnival featured many tried and true
favorites as well as some new innovations. It takes
dozens and dozens of folks to make the day a
success, so a big thank you to all the volunteers and
especially to co-chairs Nancy Schley, Devon Stewart
and Denise Sommer. Thanks also to Leigh Ehrlich
who will run Field Day for the younger grades on the
last day of school.
This was a very special year for me and it was an
honor to serve as your PTA President. The outgoing
PTA Board is filled with talented and enthusiastic
“doers” who make so many things happen at school
with their hours and hours of behind the scenes work.
Thank you to the Executive Board and all the
Committee Chairs for your incredible efforts. You are
much appreciated. Please welcome the very capable
Carin Ezal as next year’s PTA President with the
wonderful Melissa Renda as Executive Vice
President.
As school wraps up, many classes will have parties
and events. This time of year is a whirlwind of
activity for most families.
If your children are
interested in playing fall sports (soccer, football,
lacrosse, etc.) be sure to register them now.
Last, but not least…please come to the Honorary
Service Awards and Volunteer Appreciation Coffee
on the morning of Monday, June 1st! Coffee and a
continental breakfast will be served. The event will
run from 8:00-9:00 AM. Please come early so we
can get everyone seated in time to see the
wonderful skits to surprise our Honorary Service
Award winners.

2015 Battle of the Books
The 2015 Battle of the Books was attended by
Izaak Meyerovich, Brody Sturm, Kevin Yang,
Blake Lindblad and Kyle Spink. Our five
contestants spent a year preparing for this fun
event by reading from a list of 30 books, then
teaming up and "battling" with other enthusiastic
readers from all over Santa Barbara County.
It was the year's biggest and most exciting
gathering of "bookworms!"
Any fourth through sixth grade student who
loves reading and is interested in trying out for
next year's Battle of the Books can find the
2016 reading list below. Stop by the library for
more details!

The 2015 Carnival on May 8
was a HUGE success! The
weather held out for us and we had record attendance —
and the kids had a blast!
The Carnival Committee and the PTA would like to thank
all the volunteers who set up and ran the class booths as

helped us take down and clean up afterward. Many

This school year, with a grant of $25,000 donated by the
Mountain View School Foundation (MVSF), the District
installed new lighting and sound equipment in the
Multipurpose Room. The grant was made possible by
generous contributions from neighbors, friends, former
students and their families, businesses and other
grantors, who are committed to excellence in education
and who recognize that an investment in our
neighborhood school is an investment in the future of our
children and our community.
The MVSF Task Force has been working closely with the
faculty and the administration to plan an innovative STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) lab at
Mountain View School, which will support an exciting
hands-on engineering and science curriculum. The
District has agreed to begin preparing the room this
summer for use in the fall of 2015. We are optimistic
about equipping the room with stations and educational
tools to enable the students to begin using the lab in the
2015-16 school year. We have recently launched our
STEM fundraising campaign and we are greatly
encouraged by the enthusiastic response. This will be an
ongoing project to be completed in stages as funds are
received.
The goal of MVSF is to support and sustain the tradition
of excellence at Mountain View School to help prepare
our children for the challenges and opportunities of the
21st century. We are excited about our vision of what we
can accomplish in the years ahead. With the continued
support of neighbors, friends and businesses, “We know
we can!”

Helpers Needed
Calling all Mountain View families!
Missing Something?
Do you like to garden? Consider volunteering to help
maintain our school garden this summer!
Our kids have done a great job with the garden this year,
so let's keep it going. We are looking for families to adopt
the garden for a week during the summer and take care
of it — weeding, watering, and harvesting the crops.
Come check out the lost and found collection
located on the rolling rack in the Multipurpose
Room and on the coat hooks located outside
the boy’s bathroom. All small items (such as
jewelry, glasses, etc.) are in the school office.
Please check your calendars and email Tom Krueger at
kruegerremodel@gmail.com if you are interested in
helping care for the garden this summer. You can also
sign-up on Parent Square!
All clothing left after school
ends for Summer Break
will be donated to charity!
Please take the time to come to school and
look for any missing clothing or other items
such as backpacks, lunch containers, water
bottles, and even shoes!

Party Book Thank You
As the school year draws to a close, we are excited to report that the Party Book
fundraiser has generated over $22,000 for the PTA to benefit Mountain View
School! We thank all the party hosts, donors, teachers, school staff, PTA members
and party guests for supporting the party book effort this year and helping the PTA
exceed its original goal of $15,000. All party book proceeds will go directly to student
enrichment programs at Mountain View — what a great way to end the year!
We will miss the Weltys, who hosted the recent ‘80s party (for a second time) for
Mountain View families, and all the other families who are moving on to junior high.

The excitement on the faces of our children as they
hunted for books to read all summer was joyful! What a
gift!!

Technology Preview
The Goleta Union School District Technology
Committee has been meeting this year and has
developed a plan to make technology usage more
consistent throughout the district. The plan calls for the
use of iPads in Grades K - 2 and Chromebooks in
Grades 3 - 6. Students in the upper grades will use
Google Apps for Education: Google Docs, Sites and
Slide Shows (presentations). Each school will have a
Technology Team Leader for lower and upper grades.
These teachers will get Google as well as other
professional development and will then work with other
teachers to help them use these devices more
effectively.
There are a few exciting things starting next fall:
Minecraft and Coding clubs, Augmented Reality apps
and Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments.

Mountain View will setup a minecraftedu server.
The club will meet during the lunch/recess time
one day a week in the lab. The students will
participate in individual as well as group projects in
a safe and controlled “minecraft world” monitored
by an adult.

Yesi Thomas and I are investigating the various
coding and computer programming options for
students. One option is the Google CS-first
program. Mrs. Thomas will probably be offering an
afternoon activity in the fall. More information will
be available regarding both the Minecraft and
coding activities in August.
I am also
experimenting with the use of Augmented Reality
apps for enhancing iPad learning with 3D apps.

The teachers and I are discussing students taking
short Interim Assessments during the fall and
winter in order to see which concepts students
need to focus on to better meet the new Common
Core standards.
Without the faithful help of Linda DuBois, Sylvia Kautz,
and Jill Stevens, this event would not be as easy to do!

Finally, the computer lab will be moving next door to
the Resource Room during the last two weeks of this
school year. The Lego robotics table and equipment
will stay in the current computer area which will
become the new STEM lab (science, technology,
engineering, math).
This looks to be another exciting year, as teachers and
students explore more effective uses of technology.

3. Keep a Summer Journal

Keep reading this summer by
participating in the public library’s
Summer Reading Program. This
program begins on June 9 and
continues through July. Read some
great books and earn prizes!
The Santa Barbara Public Libraries also have a lot of fun
summer programs and activities for kids which are free to
the public. Go to http://sbplibrary.org/ to check on event
dates and times at specific libraries.

Create your own journal of your summer
vacation and other activities. Have fun writing
down some of the things that you do this
summer — taking a trip to another city,
walking in your neighborhood or visiting the
beach. Write a poem or a short story about a
favorite summer activity. Add drawings or
photos to your journal too!

Cool down on a hot summer day by making some refreshing
lemonade. Use some of the math skills you learned in school
and earn a little extra money. Or you can donate the
earnings to your favorite charity!
Plant an Alphabet Garden
Make sure to get your parent’s permission
to have a lemonade stand and ask them to
help you with lemonade ingredients and
paper cups. Determine where and when to
set up your stand, make a sign for your
stand and decide how much to charge for a
cup of lemonade — ie. 50¢. Mix up some
lemonade and have fun selling it!
Planting a theme garden can make
gardening a fun learning experience.
Look through seed catalogs or garden
centers to choose what you will plant
— one type of plant for each letter of
the alphabet (ie. radishes for “R”).
When you create your garden, make a
tag for each plant or paint the plant’s
name on a rock with enamel paint. To
make your garden as rewarding as
possible, choose plants that are hardy and grow quickly
in our area. Some of the most reliable vegetables and
flowers are bush beans, cherry tomatoes, herbs,
marigolds, radishes, zinnias, and zucchini.
If you don't have room for a full alphabet garden, try an
abbreviated version of this activity. Choose vegetables or
flowers that start with letters that spell out your name or
initials, and plant them in a window box or planter.

Setup a Lemonade Stand

Make a Nature Collection
Why not add learning to your
summer adventures? When you
go to the beach or on a camping
trip, search for treasures and
begin a nature collection. Hunting
for rocks, shells, leaves, flowers,
etc. can be a lot of fun. Sort and
classify your finds by color, size, shape, etc. or do some
research to identify and label each item. Add to your
collection all summer long — and next summer too!
