The Charente
river
Jarnac has always been closely linked to the
Charente river. It was the reason why GalloRoman potters settled down in the area, and
why this area rapidly expanded with the trade in
salt, wine and brandy, which were transported
by sailing barges (« gabarres »). Pleasure boats
and water sports have nowadays taken over.
However, the same close relationship between
towns and river persists to this day, whether you
stroll along the Chaussée des Moulins towards
the lock in Jarnac, follow the quayside towards
Bourg-Charente, take a walk around Bassac,
go canoeing or fishing, or just watch kingfishers
and grey herons.
The Charente river is 361km long, and is
navigable from Angoulême to Rochefort
(170km).

(Juac-Jarnac: 9km) or all day (ChâteauneufJarnac: 17km). Opened every day from 9am
to 7pm in July and August, on week-ends in

Charente whilst canoeing... at night! Evening
trips are organised every Friday in July and
August, followed by a barbecue (booking in

A signposted route will allow you to discover
the riverside of Jarnac and the importance
of the large mill industry that used to be in
the area. Take the Rue des Moulins, cross
the lock, wander around the park, and do
not forget to photograph the sole stone relic
of the Château: the Pont des Soupirs (the
Bridge of Sighs).

The surroundings of the Charente, as well as
its tributaries, the Soloire and the Guirlande,
are opportunities to observe a wide variety
of aquatic flora and fauna. You are allowed
to fish along the length of the river and its
streams: bleaks, carps, roaches, tenches,
breams, pikes, silurids.
Temporary permits are available from the 1st
of June to the 30th of September.
Le Chabot
Planet Ski
Embark for one hour and a half or three
hours aboard « Le Chabot », go through the
locks in Bourg-Charente and/or Gondeville,
and discover the surroundings of Jarnac,
its history and aquatic flora and fauna.
Departure point under the bridge in Jarnac.
Tickets sale on board (15 minutes before
departure). Regular river trips from May to
September (booking advised in July and
August). Departures in March and April

The Cognac vineyard stretches over 80,000 hectares which are
divided into six growth areas. The Jarnac area is in the heart
of three different zones: the Grande Champagne, the Petite
Champagne and the Fins Bois.
Cognac houses and local winegrowers open heartily their
doors to visitors and are most happy to share their secrets...

Le Circuit du Chêne (« Around the oak »)
Over three stages, you will learn with the craftsmen in a
stavemill, a cooperage and a distillery, the traditional role and
importance of oakwood into the ageing process of Cognac
and Pineau. This two and a half hour tour -which includes a
tasting of local products- is conducted by the Moine family,
winegrowers and distillers in Chassors.
From the 15th of June to the 15th of

The house of Tiffon has been keeping its
family heritage since 1875. Ideally set on the
river bank, the building houses the distillery,
the bottling plant, the storehouse and a little
museum.

Mitterrand
Jarnac, home town
of François Mitterrand
François Mitterrand, President of France from 1981 to 1995, was
born on the 26th of October 1916 at the number 22 of Abel Guy
Street, in a typical Charentaise house.
Maison Natale
The house where François Mitterrand was born can be visited with
guided tours. The President’s youth can be discovered through the
furniture and objects kept over four generations, the garden and
the « cooperage ». An exhibition of photographs and documents
encourages a better understanding of his family life.
From October to May, guided tours start at 3pm, 4.30pm and
5.30pm, from Wednesday to Sunday. From June to September,
guided tours start at 11am, 3pm, 4.30pm and 5.30pm, every day.
Closed in December.

Cimetière des Grand’Maisons
François Mitterrand died on the 8th of January 1996 and is buried
in the Grand’Maisons cemetery, according to his wishes.
This cemetery also houses potters’ ovens dating back to the GalloRoman times discovered in the area between 1965 and 1970.
They were used to heat the characteristic grey-clay pots that were
made by our ancestors.

Espace culturel
François Mitterrand Museum is set in an old Cognac cellar. There are two showrooms: the Salle
des Donations and the salle des Architectures Capitales. The hat and coat of the President were
given to the Museum in 2008.

François Mitterrand offered to the Museum
a collection made up of objects, sculptures
and drawings given by celebrities from all
over the world. This exhibition highlights
the variety of these gifts and emphasises
the materials used: ceramic, glass, bronze,
silverware, marble...
This exhibition includes scale models of
the major architectural and town-planning
projects initiated by François Mitterrand
from 1981 to 1995 and undertaken by
famous international architects. A set of
mounted displays with information about
these important public works and an area of
selected videos complete this exhibition.

History
La Communauté de communes de Jarnac
Jarnac is set in a landscape of vineyards, where the river crosses
the road linking Cognac to Angoulême. Since Neolithic times,
the pace of life in the area has been following the Charente
river’s, centred around the trade of salt, then « eau-de-vie ».
The 17 villages around Jarnac offer visitors several choices,
such as nature, sculpted stone, water, wood of the barrels...
Jarnac
Dating back to a 2000
year-old Gallo-Roman
settlement,
Jarnac
has
experienced
many invasions from
which it had to defend
itself. First a castle
was built, and then,
in the 13th century,
during the 100 Years
War, ramparts were
added. Some remains
of these can still be
seen around town. In the Renaissance period, the town found a
place in French history with the “Coup de Jarnac” and with the
Battle of Jarnac, fought between Protestants and Catholics.
In the 20th century, Jarnac witnessed the birth of François
Mitterrand, President of the Republic from 1981 to 1995.
Blason
The coat of arms of Jarnac comes from the coat of
arms of the Chabot family. Its origins date back to
the beginning of the 11th century. It is in gold
with three “chabots”, and is surmonted by a
mural crown and three crenellated towers. The
motto “Concussus Resurgo” can be translated
as “Struck down, I rise again”. Chabot is the
common name given to a wide variety of bony
fish with a large head and spiny fins.

Coup de Jarnac
In 1560, Jarnac was a protestant town – up
until the Edit de Nantes in 1685. From 1755
protestants used to meet in a barn which
was bought in 1760, becoming thus their
« House of Prayer ».
A quarter of the inhabitants was still
protestant at the Revolution. The building
which was hiding the entrance of the Temple
was destroyed in 1820 and the Temple
opened up to the street with a neoclassical
façade.
The affair started in the reign of François
the 1st, in the 1540s, by a scandalous
polemic towards Guy Chabot, lord of
Jarnac. The king’s eldest son, the Dauphin
(future King Henri the 2nd), spread the
rumour that Chabot had taken his (the
Dauphin’s) stepmother as a mistress. Guy
Chabot demanded satisfaction but the King
François the 1st refused the duel. At the
death of François the 1st in March 1547, the
Dauphin acceded to the throne as Henri the
2nd. He revived the incident and authorized
the fight to the death. The duel between
Guy Chabot and François de Vivonne,
Lord of La Châtaigneraie, took place in
Saint-Germain-en-Laye on the 10th of July
1547. Surprisingly, and thanks to two skilful
cuts to the back of his oponent’s left knee,
Chabot won.
The Battle of Jarnac
This bloody episode took place near the
Bassac abbey in 1569, during the Third War
of Religion. Louis Bourbon the 1st, Head of
the Protestant Army (Prince of Condé), was
killed where a pyramid-shaped stele has
been built, in the village of Triac.

Churches of the vineyard
The 18 villages of the area abound in
heritage and have something special to
offer: from the lack of church in Les Métairies
to the imposing Benedictine abbey church
in Bassac, through buildings with mixed
styles and coloured frescoes. The area is
well known for rural churches honouring the
Romanesque art.
The Temple
The protestant temple in Jarnac is one of
the oldest in the area. Its listed status at
the « Monuments Historiques » is due to its
façade (1998), the layout of its interior (2005)
and the Merklin organ (2011).

Bassac Abbey
The Abbey in Bassac, founded in the 11th
century, was initially placed under the
order of Saint-Benoît. The family vault of its
founders, Wardrade, Lord of Jarnac, and his
spouse Rixendis, is located in the church.
The abbey was partially destroyed during
the Hundred Year’s War and the Wars of
Religion. It was rebuilt by the Benedictine
monks of Saint-Maur in the 17th century and
renovated in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Today, the abbey of Bassac welcomes
visitors in its French-style gardens which are
a peace haven and retreat.
Free visit of the Abbey church, the courtyard,
the cloister and the chapel, all year round.
Guided tours allow you to enter into rooms
and spaces that you cannot visit on your
own; 4€ or 3€ reduced rate.

Pierre Boujut (1913-1992) was a great figure
of Jarnac. He was a cooper and a poet, and
the founder of the poetry magazine « La Tour
de Feu ».

Stone from the quarries in Saint-Même Les
Carrières were used to build houses and
monuments (Castle of Bouteville, churches,
bridges...). This stone was shipped by flat
bottom barges and was exported up to
North America, Germany, South Africa...
The last stone quarry closed in 1975 but
sand and gravel are still extracted, and stone
cutters and sculptors are still in activity.
