ANNOUNCING NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN AND CLASS
Allied Arts launched the 2016 fiscal year under the leadership of C. Renzi Stone
as chairman of the board of directors for the next two years. Stone will oversee
a 96-member board of directors with a focus on implementing strategic initiatives
including growing a culture of support for the arts, enhancing the Allied Arts
message and improving services to Allied Arts grantees.
The start of the fiscal year also welcomed 19 new members to the Allied Arts
board of directors. They have already added energy, enthusiasm and unique
skill sets to short- and long-term planning.

ALLIED ARTS ORIENTATION
As part of the annual board orientation, new members, as well
as some board veterans, toured five Allied Arts member
agency facilities, hearing from 16 agency representatives. They
learned of the impact of arts programming, specifically how
arts education transforms the path of underserved children’s lives.

SHORTT NAMED VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
At the June Allied Arts annual meeting, Carl Shortt Jr. was awarded the 2015
Zach D. Taylor Volunteer Award. Throughout more than a decade of service,
Shortt has chaired the finance committee, volunteered on the allocations and
strategic planning committees, worked with several member agencies, and
provided in-kind photography for Allied Arts.
The award was created after the passing of Zach D. Taylor, one of Allied Arts’
most ardent champions, to recognize steadfast Allied Arts volunteers. Taylor
served the organization in a number of capacities over two decades, including
allocations chair, co-chair of OPUS, Allied Arts’ biennial fundraising gala, and
board chair.

engage employees
with the cultural
community. Originally
from Michigan, Laura
earned degrees in
music education from
Western Michigan
University and wind
music conducting at
Southern Oregon
University, then
worked for 10 years
as a public school
teacher.
YOUR INVESTMENT IN ACTION
In the first funding cycle of the 2016 fiscal year, Allied Arts awarded $65,950 in support of youth arts education and $18,713
in support of organizational capacity building efforts to 29 central Oklahoma cultural organizations through the Allied Arts
Educational Outreach and Capacity Building grant programs.
Funded projects include Life Change Ballroom’s in-school life skills training disguised as dance instruction at F.D. Moon
Elementary, Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park’s touring of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Southeast High School and
Edison Prep, healing arts programming by the Oklahoma City Museum of Art at OU Children’s Hospital, Title I school
field trips to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, and afterschool programming by Oklahoma Children’s
Theatre at Putnam Heights, Edgemere, Cleveland and Positive Tomorrows elementary schools.
Allied Arts considers educational outreach and capacity building proposals from qualified cultural nonprofits headquartered
in central Oklahoma. The next deadline for educational outreach and capacity building funding is January 15, 2016. To

LEAVING A LEGACY FOR THE ARTS
Through a matching grant offered by the Kirkpatrick Family Fund, Allied Arts will add $34,585 to its affiliated fund held at
the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. With a goal of raising $15,000, more than $29,000 was generated from Allied
Arts supporters with $5,000 matched by the Kirkpatrick Family Fund.

Our member agencies have a festive slate
of programming happening this holiday season.
Don’t forget to use your OKCityCard!
Celebrate Christmas Eve with the Ambassadors’
Concert Choir. Their annual Christmas concert,
featuring Frontier Brass Band and the Ambassadors’
Children’s Choir, will be held on December 24 at St.
John Missionary Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.
Admission is free.
Ring in the New Year in downtown Oklahoma City
with the Arts Council Oklahoma City’s Opening
Night on December 31. The event features a
variety of bands, street performers and a fireworks
extravaganza at midnight. Tickets are required.
Canterbury Choral Society presents its annual
Canterbury Christmas concert on December 7 at
the Civic Center Music Hall featuring Oklahoma’s
own fiddle sensation Kyle Dillingham. In addition
to Christmas classics, the concert will include a
carol sing-a-long. Tickets are required.
Carpenter Square Theatre performs Greetings! from
November 27 – December 19. The heartwarming comedy
centers around a family in desperate need of a holiday
miracle. Tickets are required.
Cimarron Opera presents its second annual Holiday
Sing-A-Long on December 11 in conjunction with
the second Friday Art Walk in downtown Norman.
Admission is free.
Shopping for the art lover on your list? Firehouse Art Center
showcases the work of regional artists for sale at its Holiday
Gift Gallery which is open from November 13 – December 24.
Head to the Plaza Theatre for your annual journey with
Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas as Lyric
Theatre performs Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas
Carol, presented by Devon Energy. The show runs from
December 2-27. Tickets are required.
Are you hankering for an evening of old-fashioned Western holiday celebrations?
Singer and songwriter Michael Martin Murphey headlines The National Cowboy
& Western Heritage Museum‘s 21st annual Cowboy Christmas Ball presented
by Express Employment Professionals on December 18. Reservations required.
Based on the bestselling children’s
books, Oklahoma Children’s Theatre
presents Junie B in Jingle Bells, Batman
Smells from November 30 – December 18
at the Children’s Center for the Arts
on the Oklahoma City University campus.
Tickets are required.
From December 3-5, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic
presents The Christmas Show, a Broadway-style, Yuletide
variety show with singers, dancers, comedy and beloved
holiday tunes. The show also features full costumes and
sets to transform the Civic Center Music Hall into a familyfriendly Christmas scene. Tickets are required.

with fanciful new set and costume
designs at the Civic Center Music
Hall from December 12-22.

Give your children the gift of art. Oklahoma
Contemporary offers day-long art camps from
December 16-18. Paid enrollment is required.
Throughout December, the Red Earth Art Center celebrates the season during the
inaugural Red Earth Treefest featuring seven Christmas trees adorned with handmade
ornaments showcasing diverse Native cultures. Participating Oklahoma Tribes include
the Cheyenne & Arapaho, Chickasaw, Citizen Potawatomi, Comanche and Osage
Nations. Red Earth is located in downtown Oklahoma City. Admission is free.
Keep your kiddos learning during winter break.
From December 28-31, Science Museum Oklahoma
offers day-long camps where hands-on activities bring
science and art to life. Paid enrollment is required.
Join The Sooner Theatre for Home for the Holidays, a musical revue of traditional
holiday classics, as well as newer favorites. Running from December 9-13, the
performances will be enjoyed by the entire family. Tickets are required.
CATALYST CORNER
Catalyst, Allied Arts’ young professionals network, approved
a new slate of board members at the start of the Allied Arts
fiscal year. Catalyst board members include: Heath Hornbeek,
Smith Design Company, chair; Bailey Gordon, Oklahoma
Hall of Fame, chair-elect; Amanda Kirkpatrick-Lawler, Metro
Mark Realtors, past chair; Callie and Chris Gruenwald, Beacon
Pointe and Constellation Aviation Solutions respectively,
ARTini co-chairs; Kimberly Cope, Sonic, ARTini chair-elect;
Chris Parker, KFOR, communications vice-chair; Claire
Turmelle, Stephenson Cancer Center, events vice-chair; and
Nathaniel Harding, Harding Shelton Exploration, membership
vice-chair. Members at large are: John Krenger, Bank of
Oklahoma; Elizabeth Lauderback, Dunlap Codding; Lisa
Lloyd, Saxum; Christian Pearson, MidFirst Bank; and Collins
Peck, Smith & Pickel Construction.
Board members coordinated the first event of the year which
celebrated the art of sport at Top Golf on July 21st. More
than 40 members and guests practiced their swings while
sharing their reasons for joining Catalyst. The fall gathering
was a Lunch & Learn at IAO Gallery on September 30th.
Featured speakers included C. Renzi Stone, Saxum chairman
and CEO, and representatives from other Allied Arts member
agencies.
CIRCLE CLUB BRUNCH
On September 20th, Circle Club members and their
guests celebrated the upcoming fall season at the
annual Bring-A-Friend Brunch. The event was held
at the new CHK Central Boathouse, an ideal setting
“where art meets the river.” More than 125 members
and guests enjoyed the Martha Burger Art Gallery
housed at the boathouse, live painting by local artist
Ellen Moershel and music by Allied Arts staff member
and violinist Laura Cunningham. Special thanks to
the University of Central Oklahoma for hosting the
event and to The Fleuriste for providing the lovely
floral décor.
Circle Club members donate $1,000 or more to the
Allied Arts annual campaign with benefits including
quarterly events, like the fall brunch, networking with
civic, cultural and company leaders, and the opportunity
to interact with the arts on an intimate level. For more

The next Catalyst event will be a pottery-making session at
Oklahoma Contemporary on November 19th. Members will
tour the galleries and channel their inner artist while creating
their own artwork. Space is limited.

With the 2016 campaign kicking off in January, Allied Arts needs your help in raising funds and awareness for arts education,
quality cultural programming and access to the arts for all. Volunteering is easy. Set a goal and we’ll help you reach it –
whether it’s securing donations for five OKCityCards or holding a bake sale with proceeds benefiting Allied Arts.
Allied Arts will hold a volunteer orientation on January 19th prior to the Campaign Kickoff. At the orientation, Allied Arts
will provide you with a toolkit to ensure you have everything you need to have fun and be successful.

PROJECTING A NEED
The Allied Arts office projector has been replaced after several years of good service. Because many cultural groups and
other local nonprofits use the Allied Arts conference room as a convening space, it is imperative that Allied Arts have a
functioning projector. An unanticipated expenditure, Allied Arts welcomes assistance in recouping the $900 cost of the
new projector.
