Winter 2016
art matters With you art can change a life. Allied Arts Quarterly Newsletter Volume 9, Issue 2, Winter 2016 Campaigning for the Arts On January 19, Allied Arts 2016 campaign co-chairs Karen Delaney and Michael Laird hosted the Campaign Kickoff event with 275 supporters, civic leaders and cultural administrators in attendance. Showcasing the abundance of young talent in our community, children from Canterbury Youth Chorus’ Apprentice Choir opened the program, while The Sooner Theatre students Jack Baldwin and Chelsea Thiessen performed and shared how arts participation has changed their lives. “We realize that in this economic climate it may be more difficult this year than in any of the other 44 years of Allied Arts’ history to fundraise,” stated Delaney concerning the campaign. “But we are confident that we’ll continue the tradition built over the last four years of exceeding the $3 million mark. We plan to communicate that art is for everyone; that art is a necessity; and that art deserves full-scale, community-wide support.” Campaign funds impact the lives of approximately 1 million people each year with the power of the arts, including the provision of more than 428,000 arts education experiences to schoolchildren statewide. Leading arts agencies utilize Allied Arts funding to continue enhancing our community’s quality of life. The 2016 Campaign Kickoff was presented by The Chickasaw Nation, Devon Energy Corporation and OGE Energy Corp. Special thanks to Allied Arts Kickoff in-kind partners: EchoMedia, Factor 110, Howard Brothers Florist, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, STAPLEGUN and Walker Companies. Maguire Named the 2016 Honorary Chair Every year, Allied Arts recognizes the leadership of an individual or couple who has demonstrated tremendous support for the cultural landscape. For the 2016 campaign, Allied Arts has named Joan S. Maguire as the Honorary Chair. Maguire has a long history with Allied Arts, serving on the board in many capacities including as an allocations volunteer, as a task force member working to add new member agencies to the umbrella 15 years ago and as chair of the annual campaign in 2005. She has also contributed her time and expertise to several arts agencies, most notably Oklahoma Children’s Theatre and Oklahoma Contemporary. Maguire is passionate about providing children with arts experiences which she views as opportunities for our youth to develop confidence and composure in their known abilities and a willingness to take on tasks unfamiliar to them. With [You] Art Can February is Allied Arts Month Allied Arts is excited to launch its new marketing campaign illustrating the various ways that art can impact our community. For the last several months, Allied Arts has been working with local advertising firm STAPLEGUN to reframe the arts as a mechanism for healing, teaching, mentoring and inspiring. DONATE TODAY www.alliedartsokc.com/donate 2016 marks the 45th anniversary of Allied Arts. Since 1971, Allied Arts has distributed more than $50 million to more than 60 leading cultural organizations. During its history, Allied Arts has provided vital resources to ensure quality programming at affordable prices and to expand community outreach to ensure access to the arts for underserved populations. Rather than hold an event to celebrate the 45 years, Allied Arts will mark the anniversary with an online raffle open to Oklahoma residents. The 45 Day Giveaway is just that – 45 days of prizes with chances costing just $5 per ticket. Items to be included in the raffle include an official Oklahoma City Thunder basketball signed by players, a Yeti Cooler, OnCue gas for one year, jewelry from Naifeh Fine Jewelry and various gift cards to popular restaurants and stores. The raffle is scheduled to begin on April 26. Stay tuned for updates by following @AlliedArtsOKC on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Circle Club Celebrates the Holidays Members of Circle Club, Allied Arts’ patron group, gathered on December 17 at the Gaillardia show house of home-builder Dave Goodman to celebrate the holiday season together. Goodman’s home was transformed into a gallery with 30 pieces of artwork by local artists Desmond Mason and Christie Owen. The more than 250 guests also enjoyed live entertainment provided by students of Oklahoma Youth Orchestras and singers representing OK City Chorus, both Allied Arts member agencies. Circle Club members donate $1,000 or more to the Allied Arts annual campaign with benefits including quarterly events, like the holiday party, networking with civic, cultural and company leaders, and the opportunity to interact with the arts on an intimate level. For more information on Circle Club, please contact jennifer.bryan@alliedartsokc.com. Catalyst Corner As part of their strategic effort to engage with the arts, the Allied Arts young professionals network Catalyst held a pottery-making session on November 19 at Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center. Teaching artist Andrea Wijkowski led more than 30 Catalyst members in the creation of ceramic jars. Elizabeth Lauderback, Sunil Isaac and Alex Lobodiak work on their ceramic jar project during the annual holiday gathering. ARTini ARCADE, chaired by Callie and Chris Gruenwald, will take place on April 1 at the OKC Farmers Market. Catalyst is also hosting a recruiting event on March 15 at the Allied Arts rooftop. The recruiting event will provide an opportunity for current and prospective members to join or renew their Catalyst membership while previewing some of the artwork to be auctioned at ARTini and enjoying drinks and small bites. If you’re under 40 and want to attend this fun event, email rsvp@alliedartsokc.com by March 8. Not a Catalyst member, but want to join? Membership is $300 per individual or $500 per couple. Benefits include events like the pottery-making workshop, as well as a ticket(s) to ARTini. For more information, contact caitlin.tarasi@alliedartsokc.com.
