Hi all,
I started to say ladies, but I must remember we are a mixed group!
Thanks for being a part of us Rick.
I am so excited about all the things going on in the guild. It seems
like we are growing be leaps and bounds and having a great time. I
hope you are ready for some additional fun. We have launched a
Sew Along from a Bonnie Hunter pattern, Christmas Lights. The
first month of directions are on the web site. Each month there will
be another installment. I plan to make mine with batiks I have collected. I hope to see yours too. As you sew along don't forget to
post those pictures to the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild facebook
page. We all love to see your progress. I would also invite you to
bring your progress to the meeting for some additional oohs, aahs
and encouragement for the rest of us.
The next thing we are going to do is a FUGLY exchange, Fabric of
the Ugly variety. Now I know that most of you only purchase
beautiful stuff but sometimes it just jumps in your cart without being seen. So in January bring a fat quarter of your fugliest in a
brown paper bag ( you don't have to put your name on it ). We will
exchange bags. You put a bag in you get one out. If you have lots
of fuglys you can bring them too. In March you just need to bring
your completed project, anything, mug rugs, placemat, quilt. We
will have a display to see the transformation.

Minutes of General Meeting November 8th, 2014
The meeting was called to order by Renee Darkis, President at 9 am at STC in Weslaco.
Secretary's Report: It was pointed out the there was a need to correct the spelling
of Subie Redd in last months minutes. This will be done. No other corrections or changes were called for,
therefore minutes passed as posted in the newsletter.
Treasurer's Report: Income $1,750.21
Expense 1,848.56
Balance $30,681.40
Membership: 10 new members today
Community Service: 279 items donated for a total of 1446 hours and a value of $10,308.50
Announcements: Renee Darkis announced that both Alice Gibson and Judi Swanda were looking for
assistants to join them now and take over the positions when they are out of office. All volunteers see Alice or Judi. Renee did a demo on how to use our facebook page and also announced an FUGLY fabric
exchange. Bring an Ugly FQ in brown paper sack to January meeting, an exchange will take place and
then bring back a project made using this fabric in March. Renee also acknowledged our members who are
Veterans – we appreciate their service.
Programs: Alice announced the upcoming programs as posted on the web and introduced Maggie Ball
our speaker later today. It was noted by Alice that a lot of people signed up for the classes on the past
Thursday and Friday that did not cancel or show up. This makes it very hard on the speaker and Alice for
scheduling. Please let her know if you are not going to attend.
Schoolhouse: Classes are filling fast and there is a standby list for two of the classes.
Lambykins Class will be next Friday taught by Jackie Heyes, and Color and Stitch on the 5th of December,
note; it will be before the next guild meeting due to the holidays and availability of the school.
Hostess: 138 members present with 5 guests and 10 new members for a total of 153.
Sunshine & Shadows: Sharon Norwood's brother passed away and her daughter remains very ill. Florea
Flores brother had open heart surgery, Carol Hover recovering from her surgery/infection and Vicki Guerra's daughter having problems in her pregnancy.
Nominations: Only two nominations were received in the mail due to a problem with the post office. No
other nominations were received from the floor and therefore the following will assume office in January
2015: Bonnie Hall, 1st VP, Mary Jo Havertape, 2nd VP and Karon Jacobson Treasurer.
Scholarships: There will be a change in how the membership scholarships will be awarded starting in January. All members will be eligible and the drawing will be by random membership numbers.
Evelyn Fincher announced that she had received a call that there would be a donation of funds to the
scholarships awarded to the high school students and that a decision would be made at a later date as to
how this would be used.
Military Service Quilts: Mary Jo Havertape announced the size of the quilts is 60” x 72” and colors are
red, white and blue. Gold and Black may be used but not recommended. Please bring all quilts to the
Community Service table. Carina Ybarra has donated her time to quilt several of these quilts...thank you
Carina. A quilt will be given out next week to a Fallen Soldier's family in Edinburg. The soldier is Marine
Lance Corporal Dustin Michael Sekula.
Library: A total of 545 books are posted on the web site, soon to be 548. If you
e-mail Georgia Huffman with your request for a special book she will bring to next meeting. Special
acknowledgement to Carol Hover for her donation of 165 books to the library.
Newsletter: News is due by the 15th to Jackie Heyes
Block Drawing: The ladies who won the blocks last month returned with completed projects and will receive a $25. gift certificate to be used for classes. Next months block is May 26th from the calendar, to be
done in Christmas fabric in the center square and red and green borders

Retreat: The retreat is full with a waiting list and will be held on the 22nd thru 26th of March 2015. Karen
needs someone to contact shop owners in area for door prizes.
Quilt Show: Things are moving along nicely, members asked to sell, sell tickets for the Donation Quilt,
take to your park etc. Please check the web site for dates and times of quilt registration at the various parks.
January 24th will be the last day for registration. Miniatures due at the January meeting. 90” is the
maximum size in perimeter/circumference of the quilts. Prizes awarded are $100, $75 and $50. All
miniatures are donated to the guild and sold at Silent Auction at the Quilt Show in February.
There is a need for someone to volunteer to Receiving quilts and Return Quilts at the show and also
someone to Coordinate the scheduling of the Opportunity Quilt. Volunteer sign up will begin next month at
the meeting.
New Business: There is a 3 part Bonnie Hunter quilt posted on the web site for members to do. This will
be done over 3 months so you can have ready for the quilt show...lol. The quilt is called Christmas Lights 3
and all info is on the web.
Mary Jo Havertape will be having Sew Days again at her park, Rio Valley Estates, in
Weslaco in June, July and August... more info at a later date. Renee is also working on the possibility of
having a sew day this winter as well.

January, 2015 is the month to display and judge the miniatures for the 2015 quilt
show. Prizes will be awarded to the top three miniatures that receive the most viewer
choice votes.
I will accept miniatures at the December meeting. If you do not want your miniature
considered for the judging, just put a note on it to let me know.
The miniature must be no more than 90" in perimeter and have a label with your name
and title on it. Those are the only two requirements. Consider doing one. The Silent
Auction at the quilt show brings in around $1,000. Please make a miniature. They are
fun and fast and it is one way to help do your part for the show.

The Sew and Sew Bee has started up with enthusiasm again this year, meeting on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. They will start the quilting year with donation quilts, making them in a new way as
discovered in a magazine. Many projects are planned for this year with many group members
volunteering to lead the classes.
The group picture displays the quilt tops made by the newer quilters of our group. The second picture shows
an example of a quilt made by Pat Culp who has been quilting for a
short time. She has been willing and eager to try most any project!

The Wanna Bees warmly welcomed me at their regular second Sunday get-together. They started their meeting with a Show and Tell which included a beautiful quilt for a new grandson, donation quilts and items for
the guild, and even Christmas presents for family members. Next, they moved on to their door prizes, generously given by group members. I was lucky enough to be included and even luckier to win denim which
could be used to make a walker carrier/bed rail caddy which the group is making for the RGV quilt show.
You'll want to check out the boutique for some of the items pictured.

The Mission Bees meet twice each month( on the first and third Monday) from 9:00am to 2:p.m. We bring
our lunch, have coffee and work on various projects or have a lesson or talk from whoever has been chosen. We have "Show and Tell" each time. We meet at the UVAL facility on the site of the Speer Memorial
Library on 12th St. in Mission. Our membership is at 32 at this time, we have a waiting list of prospective
members. Our leader is Janey Thompson. We have our own coffee pot, microwave and a printer to make
copies of projects that are planned. We also have a small library of books and pamphlets for the use of any
member. We are planning our Christmas Pot-Luck lunch and gift exchange party. At our November 3rd
meeting we had an informative discussion by those who attended the International Quilt Festival in
Houston. Also there was a demonstration of the newer Sergers.

At The Killer Bees November 13th meeting, Diane Hines taught 42 of us how to make a greeting card with "Card
Stitching". Picture #1 is Diane helping Bertha Fink to get started, Picture #2 is Bev Fleming and Sharon Gulyban
stitching away on their card, and picture #3 is a completed card. Stitchingcards.com will get you to the web site for
more stitching ideas. This was a great project! Previous Thursdays we have been working on heart and bone
pillows, and Cath-port Pillows that have been donated to the local cancer centers and also our bears that are donated to The Rainbow Room and local clinics. Our Retreat To Rockport is coming up in December
along with our Welcome Back Pot Luck Luncheon. And we have
a "Save This Date"...Thursday, January 29th, 2015 is our biannual Killer Bee Quilt Show in Sunshine Country Club's Retzlaff
Hall from 9AM to Noon.

Hi, my name is Bonnie Hall (AKA Auntie Bon, AKA the Hat Lady)
I’m currently your webmaster for rgvqg.com and I will soon be your
new membership person.
I originally grew up in Seattle, WA. Married my husband Mike in
1969 and moved to Ohio. I completed my education at nights while I
worked for Ohio Bell. I have a degree in Electronics Engineering
Technology. I worked almost 31 years for the telephone company in
various areas of equipment engineering. I’ve dabbled with many
different computer programing languages. I’m enjoying the challenge
of learning web design and maintaining the rgvqg.com website.
My husband, Mike, and I are recent (2011) transplants from Ohio to the
Rio Grande Valley. We came to the valley for the square and round
dancing. McAllen is touted as the “Square Dance Capitol of the
World”. My husband is also a square dance caller. He is the only
square dance caller in the valley during the months of April – October.
I’ve been quilting since about 1984. I’d have to call my cousin to find
out exactly when I started. She has the first quilt I ever made. It’s an
Eleanor Burns, Log Cabin Quilt in a Day that took me two days to make. I gave it to her for a wedding
present. Most of our family has been inundated with my quilts.
The Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild is the first quilt guild I’ve ever belonged to. I’ve really enjoyed the
comradeship and the many opportunities to learn that the guild has brought me.

My second selfie is the one I’m attaching to this bio. I think is one you all
would recognize. I have been a member of the guild for three years. I waited
three months before I jumped up (with a lot of pushing from Deb) and said I
would help Deb do what was then called Wounded Warriors. By Dec’s board
meeting, we decided to change the name (to Military Service Quilts), the colors
(red, white and blue only, with a few exceptions), the size (from anything to
72”L x 60”W), and from sending them to Fort Hood to keeping them in the
valley. A lot of publicity and a HUGE support base from the rest of the members of the guild have turned this project into a tremendous success. I have discovered how blessed I am in finding new friends and a quite joy of quilting I
didn’t know existed. Thank you all for being you.

Hi! Its that time of year again………….To all Members of the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild, please see
the emergency box on the web site (www.rgvqg.com) for information on future meetings and classes. The
map is in color, and may take some time to download. Thank you
News on coming programs. Program classes are normally $35 payable to RGVQG on day of
program class. There may be additional expenses based on the needs of the individual classes, e.g. some
classes require purchase of kits, patterns, books, etc. Starting in November 2014 the normal cost for
program classes will be $45 for members and $70 for non-members. The extra $25 for non-members
makes them eligible for membership in the guild.
