PRESIDENT’S LETTER
As I sit down to write this article for the magazine, I am
thinking about how nice our convention was back in March.
It is sure nice to get our members and venders together once
a year for a convention. Miles and crew did a wonderful
job with the convention. If you see him, make sure you
thank him because it takes a lot of time to coordinate the
convention. If you run into the vendors who attended our
convention, please thank them. Without those venders, we
could not do this. If there are any other venders out there
that would like to be part of our convention, please let me
or a board member know.
The next convention will be held March 22 and 23, 2012
in Minot, ND, at the Holiday Inn. I am currently looking

for some people to help me put on this
convention from the Minot area. I also
would like some ideas on what kind
of speakers or technical seminars we
would like to have at this convention,
and what kind of activities we could
have for the ladies.
The 2013 convention will be held in Grand Forks. We
are still looking for somebody to chair this convention.
Please get a hold of me if you are willing to help with this
convention. In closing, I hope everyone has a fun and safe
summer. See you this fall.
Ed Barnhardt, President
The North Dakota Auto Body Association would like
to do a survey of labor rates in North Dakota. We are
doing this survey so we can list them in our News Report
Magazine twice a year. They will be listed by district so
if there is any question of prevailing labor rates in your
area you will have a little information for your area. We
will list all that we receive and would like everyone to fill
one out. We would like the shop’s name so we can put it
in their district of North Dakota.

The secretary’s report and treasure’s
report were read and approved. All
shops in attendance reported lots of
work this winter.
Clyde Nelson reported on the
magazine. We have lost several
advertisers this past year, mainly
because of lack of content in the
magazine. Clyde will work on it one
more year and if it doesn’t improve he
will retire. Get the articles to him with
the source and he will get permission
to print. Bob Shadwell is going to have
his office girl look through magazines
and find some articles in her spare time.
Human interest stories are also most
welcome.
Discussion was held on compensation
for the secretary and treasure positions.
Miles Doll made a motion to put the
positions on the payroll at $1000 per
position per year. He amended this
motion to include back pay for the past
year of 2010. It was seconded by Duane
Geir. Motion carried. Jeff Pfau made the
motion that the pay period would be the
calendar year as the organization runs.
Second by Scott Heintzman. Motion
passed.

Dates and motel info will be e-mailed
as soon as they as set in stone.
The new web site is up and running.
The web designer is doing a great job
but if anyone has any ideas, please let
Clyde Nelson or Ed Barnhardt know.
If shops who have a web site want to
link to the NDABA site, it is possible.
Again, contact these men.
There will be a conference call set
up for our next meeting to wrap up the
convention on April 16, 2011 at 10 AM.
Verla Rostad will assist in setting it up.
Thank you Verla.
It was decided to renew the CD that
is coming due in April and to leave it
in Steele for now.
Discussion was held on ways to
get more men to come to the board
meetings. Ed led a discussion on
comparing the estimating systems at
our February meeting. Any ideas for
topics are welcome. Also discussed the
possibility of moving the meeting place
to other cities.
Miles Doll made a motion to do a
survey of prevailing rates and will hand
sheets out at the banquet and also have
sheets available at the booth. Second

The audit committee of Bryce
Hancock and Kent Meidinger will
examine the treasures book and the
magazines bookwork.
Discussion was held on what to do
with the old copy machine that Tom
Ose has stored for the past year. Jim
Rostad thought that it was obsolete and
Tom should do with it what he wants. If
anyone wants this copy machine, please
contact Tom.
Robert Isakson brought to the
attention of the members that maybe
the association should sponsor the
winners of the college and high school
competition in collision and refinishing
to help with expenses at the National
Convention in June. Duane Geir made
a motion to give $300 to the college
winner and $250 to the high school
winner. Second by Stan Freeman.
The recipients will have to go to the
competition to receive the money,
Motion carried.
Bryce Hancock moved to adjourn the
meeting. Second by Tom Ose
Awards were handed out at the
banquet. Congratulations to each and
everyone of the recipients.

NDABA 25TH ANNUAL CONVENTION
& TRADE SHOW HIGHLIGHTS
THANK YOU, VENDORS!
I would like to thank all the vendors who participated in this year’s Convention & Trade Show.
Without your support we couldn’t do it.
For those who couldn’t make it this year, it was a fun and knowledgeable time. It’s a good
time to meet the vendors that you deal with and put a face to them and possibly find some other
sources to different things also. It’s also a good time to meet other shop owners around the state
and exchange ideas with them.
Thanks to PAMS AUTO for sponsoring the Thursday Tech Night meal.
Thank you to MINOT CHRYSLER TOYOTA SCION CENTER for sponsoring Friday
morning breakfast.
Thank you to all the vendors who donated prizes throughout the weekend.
Thank you for all the other miscellaneous donations for Tech Night & Friday Night Banquet
from vendors that were present and from Corwin Chrysler Fargo and DSI Fargo
who were unable to attend the conference.

The Fickle Pickle
By Scott Shriber
I would like to start off this month
with a quirky and unsettling statement:
“Customers are fickle.” There. I said it.
To some, that may seem obvious.
Others probably haven’t thought much
about it. For those of you who know
what I’m getting at, you’re on your way
to overcoming the problem. For the rest
of us, it’s time to take notice. Every year
that goes by, it becomes increasingly
more difficult to keep our customers
interested in or even aware of us.
This concept of customer loyalty,
which I sometimes refer to as the “fickle
pickle,” isn’t a new one. And I’m not
necessarily talking about loyalty itself.
My concerns are a level under that: the
thought process that goes through a
consumer’s mind when they’re making
a decision about a given product. This is
where those of us in the collision repair
business are severely challenged. Like it
or not, a consumer doesn’t consider the
process of getting their vehicle repaired
a positive experience. It seems like no
big deal to those of us in the business
because we deal with it every day, but
that’s because we understand how it
works and we control the process. For
those outside the business, it’s nothing
short of painful. Think of what goes
through their mind: How long will it
take? Will it be done right? Will it look
good? What about diminished value
when I go to trade? The list of unknowns
for a customer goes on and on.
So you ask, “What does this have to
do with customers being fickle?” Well,
if a customer isn’t looking forward to
experiencing the good or service you
provide, it makes them tend to search
for something better. In the automotive
production world, product life cycles
used to be five to six years, and there
might have been a refresh every three
years. Development time on those
products was about 36 to 40 months, so
it was important to get it right. Today,
customers want the vehicles to change
every two years, and the industry is
working with development times around
24 months or less. Consumers are
searching faster than ever, and with it
goes decreased brand loyalty. Searching
by your customer is a bad thing.
What are you doing in your business
to stay in front of your customer? Do
they hear from you when they don’t
have a collision-related issue? Is there
any positive communication to keep
your brand front and center so that when
they or their friend needs a repair, they
think of you? Something as simple as a
birthday card or a sticker in the owner’s
manual can be a friendly reminder. I’ve
seen shops that offer a free clean-up
on the customer’s birthday or a free
oil change once a year. The options
are endless, and they don’t need to be
expensive. We just need to be sure our
customers associate our businesses with
positive things.
Whatever your strategy is, it needs to
be often and upbeat. Give that customer
a reason to think positively about
your place of business. Be sure they
understand what to expect when they do
need you and you’ll have gone a long
way toward fighting the fickle factor.
Here’s to long and prosperous
relationships!
