Charlie Campbell wins Majors at Mid-Ohio! 05/31/15 Misery Bay’s Charlie Campbell took advantage of a short rain shower to pass Sam Henry and Eric Prill in the “Keyhole” to win the F Production race in his Campbell Brothers Racing Mazda Miata. See his interview at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Xxh22LS4drc Unfortunately, Charlie’s engine expired on the cool down lap and he was not able to make the Sunday Prod race. Neohio native Eric Prill, and now SCCA VP and Chief Operations Officer won FP on Sunday. In Saturday’s Spec Miata race, Charlie was hit and his rear bumper broken loose. He managed to still finish 25th out of 45 with the bumper forming a huge air scoop. Justin Hille, from Canfield won, with Alex Bolanos of Hialeah, FL second. He had better luck on Sunday, finishing a hard fought 19th. There were over 315 cars entered in the 8 race groups with racers from as far as California. The occasional sprinkle made things challenging Saturday, but the real rain on Sunday was worse. 05/28/15 The great weekends just kept coming and May had 5 of them! Congratulations to Ian McCune on his first Solo as Chairman! He even won HS! 44 entries with a questionable weather forecast. 17 Weekend Members, we need to convert them. Very close times! I see that Jeff Britton aced Tim Mackey by one-one thousandth of a second on the PAX. Lots of good comments on Facebook. I understand Neal Mann stopped by and donated a helmet and driving gloves. Thanks! I am sorry that I missed him. I was up at Mosport with the Pirelli World Challenge. Major thanks to Nick Schneider and Dorothy too for the pics! KV reported that we made a profit. Always good! My May started with 3 days at Mid-Ohio instructing with NORPCA(Northern Ohio Region). Beachwood Porsche even bought us all dinner Saturday night! Great sponsor. Then I was up at Watkins Glen with ARPCA(Allegheny Region). Fun, fun in the Cayman. My best weekend was the 5 days up at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park with the PWC. Best weather ever. The Canadians and the World Challenge folks are 2 continued on p. 5 Young Corey Fergus, from Columbus, OH celebrated his first two professional victories at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in the Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car races in his Porsche Cayman. Johnny O’Connell won both of the Pirelli World Challenge GT races at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in his new Cadillac ATS-VR That’s some American muscle! We had an amazing 92 cars in 3 groups. The Touring Cars-TC, TCA, and TCB had 3 races, and young Corey Fergus from Columbus won 2 of them in his Porsche Cayman! I have watched him come up through our Club Racing ranks and it was great to see his first professional race win. Kurt Rezzetano of Phoenixville, PA and Phoenix Performance won the first GTS race in his Mustang and then Jack Baldwin, who borrowed my tail-light last year at MidOhio, split the front row at the start and won Sunday’s GTS race in his Cayman S. The GT cars are the exotic stars of World Challenge with the Ferraris, McLarens, Porsches, Bentleys, and Audi R8s, but Johnny O’Connell won both GT races in his new Cadillac ATS-V. Rebersburg, PA’s Butch Leitzinger was 3rd in the first GT race, and 2nd in the last one. Great racing. The GT and GTS cars will be at Mid-Ohio the end of July and the TC folks will be there in August. Put that on your calendar now! Next I was back at Mid-Ohio with the Northern Ohio BMW folks. Mid-Ohio School Instructor, Greg Vandersluis, gave me a thrill ride in one of the school’s Acuras. Greg has been an SCCA racer for some time and his new real job is Service Manager for Cleveland Motorsports and Aston Martin Cleveland. Sweet! And then, back to Mid-Ohio for the big SCCA Majors weekend. June will be a VERY BUSY Misery Bay month, with Solos at LES on the 7th and 28th and our Out-of Region points event with Western New York up at Ralph Wilson Stadium. And there are big other events too, like the Solo Championship Tour, the Pro Solo, and Sahlen’s 6 Hours at the Glen. Track Night in America returns to Pitt Race on the 9th. And Contemporary Motorcars has announced Cruisetown Erie on Saturday June 20th from 2 to 10 PM and on Friday, August 28th from 6 to 10 PM. July will be crazy too. Charlie and I will be up at the Watkins Glen Majors 4th of July weekend. We could really use some help! The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix will be opening the new South Track at Pitt Race July 11 & 12. While we have our 5th Solo, the PVGP will be at Schenley Park. Hey, you could see that FREE on Saturday and then Solo with us on Sunday. July ends and August begins with the huge Indy Car and SCCA Pirelli World Challenge weekend at MidOhio. Fantastic racing of all types. Remember, one of the greatest perks of being an SCCA member, is that you can volunteer to work races and get closer to the action than any ticket that you could possibly buy! See You Out There! Bill 5 Misery Bay Region SCCA Membership Meeting Cornerstone Bar & Grill May 7, 2015 Members in attendance: Tim Mackey, Kate Bell, Kathy Vanderwende, Dave Hammer, Lance Dunn, Andrew Ferrara, Rich Hall, Ian McCune(by phone), Logan Flaherty, Justin Gibala, Matt Curry, Jay Dumbeck, Sam Mehler, and Bill Stewart. Guests: Ron Madurski, James Turner, RE Tim Mackey called the meeting to order at 7:05. He asked that the April Minutes be approved. Sam Mehler moved and Dave Hammer seconded. Motion passed. Tim introduced the board to our guests. Tim said he wanted the meeting to concentrate on getting ready for our first Solo. Committee Reports Treasurer - KV reported have a balance of $9,161.81 which reflects our down payment to Lake Erie Speedway. Bill Stewart asked that he and Dave Hammer be reimbursed for the $25 registration to the NEDIV Roundtable. Solo Bill reported that the wristbands should arrive tomorrow. Dave Hammer needs to contact Mays Marking about our trophy order. Tim then explained the planning for a Solo, starting with the Solo Chairman applying for an SCCA sanction and insurance. The application requires a Chairman, a Solo Safety Steward, and a Chief of Waivers. Our course designs, because they are at a race track, must be approved by the Divisional Safety Steward. Dave Hammer will tow the Solo trailer from Jay Dumbeck’s to Lake Erie Speedway. Prior to that, we will do an inventory of the trailer, listing major items, and organizing it with labeled totes. Tim then created a flow chart of the event on the wall with post-its. Set up in parallel: Safety Steward, Waivers, Registration, Course layout, Timing wiring set up, Worker stations, Timing booth, Tech 20 people total with some overlap. The RE and the Solo Chairman will check with the Position chairs that they are ready and have the necessary staff prior to the event. It is the Position chairs’ responsibility to recruit their staff. Waivers: From the very start at the gate, one hour shifts until the runs start,. Then it will be a worker station. We also need someone at lunch time. It must be done by an SCCA member. All minors(those under 18) must have a minor waiver signed by a parent or guardian. For a minor to participate, their minor waiver must be signed by both parents. Registration: Logan is Chair. Registration is from 8:30 to 9:30. Tim will check with LES about their booth and internet access. We need to have Axware running, with on-line registration entered, ready to input new entries. We need weekend membership forms for drivers. We will use a spreadsheet for passengers. We will have 3 lines: pre-registered, new registration, and weekend memberships. We will make up signs for each line. We will have one wristband when one signs the waiver, an additional one for drivers, and an different one for passengers. Timing: First get all the equipment from the trailer, and Logan. Only 2 workers required. We need to get the display and its battery, all wiring, timing lights and their stands. The timing set up crew needs to first find out from the course designer the position of the start and the finish. The timing cables must first pass through the fence to start and finish with a loop inside the fence. Then the cables are unrolled to and over the track entrance and to the timing booth. The batteries are installed in the timing lights which are then taped to their stands with the on-off switches overhanging the edges and turned on. The cabled light must be on the outside of the course. The timing display is next with its battery and antenna. Jay will tighten the antenna mount. 6 continued on p.7 May Meeting minutes continued Course Layout The Course Designer will draw the course. He will need lots of help building the course with the cones. First we get the cones from the trailer and out onto the track. We use the green cones at start and finish. We seldom use the big, the small, or the yellow cones. We generally need 5 to 8 workers to unload and position the cones. Once all the cones are positioned, the Solo Safety Steward of record must approve the course. Only then can we chalk the cones. The course should be closed for walking until it is chalked. The timing lights should be in their final position and tested. Next, he course designer and Safety Steward set the worker stations with flags, radios, spare cones, and fire extinguishers. Goal to finish set up by 9:00. Timing Booth Once Registration is done, the laptop is installed in the timing booth. Before that, we can run the extension cords, and set up the PA system. If we have a second laptop, we can set up and check the timing system. Tech 2 people. Gloves, hats, stickers, check lists. We need to remind the grid and start to check for the tech sticker. Tech should have a sign marking its location and be open from 8:30 to 9:45. Drivers Meeting Greet everyone, check wristbands, explain general procedures, safety and other rules, and worker positions. Establish run groups. Position Chairmen Registration-Logan Flaherty, Waivers-Ian McCune, Tech-Andrew Ferrara, Timing Set up and Booth-Sam Mehler, Course Layout-Course Designer(Ian for first event), Worker Chief-Jay Dumbeck, Safety Steward-Drew Bickel Logan needs help getting the equipment he has to LES. Andrew will get tech stickers. Trailer inventory and organization Tuesday night at Jay’s. Bill will bring additional fire extinguishers and wristbands. Please check all the extinguishers. Ian will bring waivers. In the trailer, we need to check the battery, the timing display, display stand, flags, chalk, helmets. Wristbands-Everyone gets a White wristband when they sign the waiver. Drivers also get a Blue wristband. and Passengers get Red. Grid and Start need to check them. Logan can review new course designs. Feedback is always welcome. Can we have our own course design class? Sometimes we get last minute, negative advice at the event. Tim wants to review our by-laws to create the office of Course Designer. Event volunteers: Lance-Timing setup, KV and Dave-Registration, Waivers-Rich Hall, Matt DeLacy, and Ian, Course Layout-Jay, Justin, Kate, and James. Logan said the event is up on motorsportreg. Please review and register. Tim suggested that we might want 2 meetings a month this summer. Bill suggested that the second meeting would be a Solo Committee meeting. Lance moved and Kate seconded that the meeting be adjourned. Motion passed and the meeting was adjourned at 8:44.
