Creating a place mark in Google Earth

This Quickstart guide shows how to create a placemark using Google Earth and how to display
the placemark in ACE.
1. Open your Google Earth application
2. Right click on “Temporary Places” on the left-hand side, then Add, then Folder as illustrated
below
3. When the pop-up window appears, change the name from “Untitled Folder” to one of your
choice. For the purpose of this document, the folder has been named “Field Sites.” Once
you click “OK” the folder will appear under the Temporary Places folder.
4. Highlight the “Field Sites” folder by clicking on it once.
5. To add the first placemark, click on the yellow push-pin icon along the top of the application
window.
The following will be displayed on the map:
Blinking Box
The yellow box surrounding the push-pin should be blinking [the dialog box may be blocking the
push pin]. While the push pin is blinking, it can be moved to a desired location. Zoom in if
necessary to properly set the location, or directly enter coordinates into the latitude and
longitude text boxes.
6. Name the placemark. For the purpose of this example, the placemark will be named “Site 1”
by highlighting and changing the text from “Untitled Placemark.”
7. Click on the yellow push-pin icon to the right of the text box where you just named it “Site 1.”
This will bring up a selection pane to change the icon to a different symbol. Any symbol can
be used. For the purpose of this document, the multi-ringed target was chosen.
8. Once the symbol has been chosen, the color of the symbol and the size of the symbol can
also be adjusted. Click the box next to the word ‘Color’ and changing the size value from
1.2 as shown to something different accomplish these.
9. Select a color and then click the “OK” button.
10. On the Google Earth “New Placemark” popup window, click on “OK.”:
Save the “Field Sites” folder to your computers disk drive as a KML formatted file type.
11. Right click the folder “Field Sites” and from the pop-up menu choose “Save Place
As…”
12. Now click on the “Files of type:” area, some systems may say “Save as type,”
where it says “Kmz (*.kmz) and select the option “Kml (*.kml), then click Save.
For the purpose of this document, the file would be saved as “Field Sites.kml” in
the directory FieldExperiment. You will need to remember where this file was
stored and its name as you will need it to load into ACE.
