Two travelers came upon the injured man, but rather than offer assistance, they simply avoided him. Finally, a third passerby "was moved with compassion at the sight" of him (Luke 10:33) and went out of his way to help. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, we can see ourselves in each person. Like the robbers, we have hurt others. Like the priest and the Levite, we have failed to show compassion. Like the injured traveler, we have suffered in body and spirit, feeling rejected and alone. Yet God never stops offering each of us his mercy, a concrete reality with which he reveals his love. We have been treated with mercy ourselves, and Jesus tells us to "go and do likewise" (Luke 10:37), giving us the roadmap of the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Each person "has a place in God's heart from all eternity" (Amoris laetitia 168). Within this context, Pope Francis reminds us, "we are called to protect our humanity, and this means, in the first place, accepting it and respecting it as it was created (AL 56). Like the Good Samaritan, may we always treat each person with merciful love and respect that affirms the gift of his or her life. His saintly grandmother, Ludmilla, raised him and sought to promote him as ruler of Bohemia in place of his mother, who favored the anti-Christian factions. Ludmilla was eventually murdered, but rival Christian forces enabled Wenceslaus to assume leadership of the government. His rule was marked by efforts toward unification within Bohemia, support of the Church and peace-making negotiations with Germany, a policy which caused him trouble with the antiChristian opposition. His brother Boleslav joined in the plotting, and in September of 929 invited Wenceslaus to Alt Bunglou for the celebration of the feast of Sts. Cosmas and Damian (Sept. 26). On the way to Mass, Boleslav attacked his brother, and in the struggle, Wenceslaus was killed by supporters of Boleslav. Although his death resulted primarily from political upheaval, "Good King Wenceslaus" was hailed as a martyr for the faith and is known as patron of the Bohemian people and of former Czechoslovakia. Christians can easily identify with his struggle to bring harmony to society. The values of the gospel are sorely needed today. [Source: wwwamericancatholic.org] Did You Know? A Strong Start in the Faith: The Catholic RCIA Stages Thinking of joining the Roman Catholic Church? The Catholic RCIA stages are a good model of basic faith development. This article provides some detailed guidance for that process. So, you’re developing your faith. Great! Is it a little overwhelming? • Where to start? • Why so many “stages” of initiation? • What should I be doing in each stage? • How will I know when I’m ready to move forward? Where do you begin? Many adults entering the Catholic Church, or those just thinking about it, follow a process known as RCIA – the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The RCIA process has several distinct stages. These Catholic RCIA stages are a good model of faith development, so this article will fit you whether or not you’re actually in the RCIA process. • • • Be sure that you’re satisfied with your own faith development in each of the Catholic RCIA stages before moving on to the next. Don’t let pressure from anyone else make you move on. Watch out for calendar-based pressure – don’t say things like, “If I don’t start catechesis now, I won’t be done this Easter!” That’s the wrong basis for making a decision about your faith and your life! RCIA stage 1: Just Looking In the inquiry stage, you’re just finding out about Jesus, Christianity and the Catholic Church. Your main task here is to Inquiry: The initial period before you decide to enter the explore and develop your faith enough so you can make an Catholic Church.
