Dear Competitors, Friends, and Families,
Welcome everyone to Northern Ohio Dressage Association’s Dressage 2016 and
Dressage 2016 Encore.
NODA’s first recognized show was held in 1987, 29 years ago. After an absence of
11 years and with the help of many generous sponsors and a great crew of
volunteers we returned to Chagrin Valley Farms in 2015. We hope that this year will
be the next step toward building an even better show weekend in the coming years.
There are a lot of different complex steps involved in putting together Recognized
Dressage Shows. Each year presents new and different challenges which have to be
managed. We are extremely lucky to have the support necessary to meet and
manage most challenges successfully.
Thank you to our very generous sponsors and advertisers, our unselfish,
hardworking volunteers and volunteer show committee, our show officials, and
Chagrin Valley Farms for once again welcoming this event to their facility.
Thank you again this year to Kevin Bradbury and the BMCI staff for managing and
providing the secretary services for these two shows. We appreciate your well run
shows and all the help and advice we have gained from working with you.
Thank you to all those NODA members past and present who provide and have
provided us a firm base of rich history and experience as we march forward into the
future adding to that history our experiences to pass on to the next generation.
Sincerely,
Recognized Show Committee

Meet Our Officials
Judges
Tami Batts (S-NC)
Tami Batts is an “S” dressage judge from Greensboro, NC. She is a full time dressage
trainer and instructor at Fellowship Farm. Husband, Steve and son, Zack are considered
her biggest blessings. Through the years Tami has been able to earn her USDF bronze,
silver and gold medals and had numerous students do the same. She still thinks it is a
joy and privilege to live on a farm and train horses every day.
Marilyn Heath (S-FL)
Marilyn Heath is an “S” Judge from Naples, Florida. She enjoys teaching horses and
riders of all levels with an emphasis on correct basics and harmony between horse and
rider. She is involved with judge education and was Chairman of the “L” Program
Committee for 9 years. She remains on the faculty, and is involved in the education for
USDF and also USEF licensed judges. She was the 2013 recipient of the USDF Lifetime
Achievement Award in recognition of her long years of involvement with the “L”
Program and judge education.
Marilyn has earned her Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals, was long listed by the USET in 1986, 1987,
and 1988. She represented the USET when she competed at the World Championships in Cedar
Valley, Ontario in 1986. She and Tudor Star subsequently won the Bengt Lundquist trophy at
Intermediare 1 and Grand Prix Levels, and the USDF Vintage Cup awards at Intermediare 2 and
Grand Prix.
Marlene Schneider (S-MN)
Marlene Schneider started riding with the Long Lake Hounds and got her colors with
them in the 70s. An English woman came to her foxhunting barn and gave dressage
lessons, and Marlene became interested in dressage and never looked back. She has
trained several horses to FEI. Marlene has had her judging license since 1979 and enjoys
judging in all different areas of the United States. When she is not judging, Marlene
teaches dressage, which she has been doing for over 30 years.
Technical Delegate
Anne Sushko (r– IA)
Anne serves as show secretary and/or manager for shows in Iowa, Missouri,
Nebraska, and Ohio . She is a USEF Dressage ‘r’ Technical Delegate, a position she
enjoys a lot. Anne is also an FEI Level 1 dressage steward, served on the USDF
GMO Committee for seven years and was the chairperson for 4 years. She served
Region Four as a PM delegate the last six USDF national conventions, is also a
member of the USDF Membership Committee and currently serves as the Region 4
Regional Director.
Anne is an Adult Amateur who loves the continual learning process of dressage. Her horse, Sir
Ishmael or Critter, is an enthusiastic partner – or so she hopes!

USDF Statement on Animal Welfare
The United States Dressage Federation, Inc. (USDF), a federation of 125 independent organizations throughout the United States with a membership in
excess of 30,000 members, supports the concept of ethical treatment of animals.
Dressage is a classical method of training horses, based upon the horse’s natural responses, as carried out in a gradual, planned program during
which the horse’s athletic abilities are improved in a systematic manner. As a result, the horse becomes capable, comfortable, and responsive in partnership with the rider without the use of force. Dressage competition at various levels of achievement is the ultimate test of the training program to
determine whether the desired harmony between horse and rider has been achieved.
The rules pertaining to dressage competition prohibit the use of artificial appliances, training aids, and drugs, which would force the horse to submit. Instead, the emphasis is upon training and a cooperative partnership with the rider. Major competitions are carefully monitored to assure that
there is no unnecessary force or harshness displayed.
Unlike other horse sports in which horses enter training at a relatively immature state, dressage training is usually not seriously begun until the
horse is three or four. The top levels of achievement require five or more years of progressive training and it is not unusual to see horses in international competition in their late teens. This, in itself, places a premium on good care and soundness throughout the horse’s life.
While supporting the concept of animal welfare in its broadest form, the United States Dressage Federation, Inc., also recognizes that it is unrealistic
to ascribe human emotions and responses to the horse which in its wild state is a creature of flight, living a hard and precarious existence. Under
domes- tication, the horse is assured of ample food, water, and shelter, as well as protection against infectious diseases and damaging parasites,
thus leading a longer and healthier life with a high rate of survival.
As an educational organization, USDF has numerous programs, which teach people how to pursue the accepted, humane training methods.
A program of certifying instructors also emphasizes protecting the horse’s welfare in pursuit of dressage training.
