YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR — 4-year-old Trevor Robson with his table of plums at the new Farmers Market
at the Choctaw Community Center in Coalgate. Trevor picked the plums at his Grandma Betty’s house,
packaged them in cups and bowls, and headed to the Farmers Market to sell them. At last count, he had
made a whopping $7 bucks. Not bad for a 4-year-old! Local growers say they are enjoying having a place
to sell their homegrown fruits and vegetables. The Farmers Market is located under the pavilion on the
south side of the community center. The market is open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or until the produce
sells out; however, a couple of vendors were already set up by 7:15 a.m. the day the Record-Register
was there. James Frazier, Choctaw Nation District 12 Councilman, encourages all growers who would
like to sell fresh produce to come set up a space. Some of the producers are able to accept Choctaw and

Three summer reading programs are scheduled for next Monday
and Tuesday, June 18 and 19, at the Coal County Public Library.
All three programs will be held in the Coal County Library Meeting
Room and are open to the public.
On Monday at 11:00 a.m., Kiona Wooton-Milliron will show
teenagers how to make t-shirt jewelry. This program is for ages
13-18.
T-shirt jewelry is accessories made from repurposed t-shirts
(cotton) that have been washed, sometimes dyed and made into
unique pieces. They are handmade, one of a kind and super
original.
Old t-shirts are great for this craft. They’re stretchy, never fray,
come in every imaginable color, and almost everyone has a spare
on hand. Embellished with beads, rhinestones, bits of leather or
ribbon, this project will turn out different each time you try it.
On Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., a program will be held for kids ages
10-17.
This will be a drama workshop presented by Kirsten Jackson.
For her teen workshops, Kirsten comes prepared with fun theatre
games and activities and teaches students how to create a character.
She takes the fright out of stage fright and offers the students the

One of the great blessings in life is a Vidalia onion. Lewis Grizzard
writes that when he is confronted by atheists, he simply makes the
point that if there wasn’t a God and He didn’t love us, there wouldn’t
be such a thing as the beloved Vidalia onion.
Think about it: Vidalia onions, which are sweet and mild, grow only
in a small part of southeast Georgia.
Some have tried to duplicate the Vidalia in other parts of the country,
but to no avail.
God, I am convinced, was traveling through what was to become
southeast Georgia during the six days of Creation and said, “Let there
be a sweet, mild onion, and let it grown here and here only.”
It was just another of the many blessings God gave us, such as spring,
cool breezes, the beach, and frequent-flyer points.
I must admit, however, that I have had a problem with Vidalia onions
over the years. I usually buy them in great quantities.
I am afraid if I don’t, the Arabs will get control of Vidalias and send
the price up so far I cant buy them anymore.
My problem is that I can’t eat my onions fast enough, and some of
my supply turns funny colors and begins to smell.
Because I absolutely abhor throwing out spoiled Vidalia onions, I set
about to find a way to keep them fresh for long periods of time.
Finally, I have the answer.
Friends invited me to dinner recently, and delicious baked Vidalia
onions were served
During the meal I asked, “Do you have a problem keeping your
Vidalias fresh?”
“Of course not,” the husband answered. “I’ve got fifty pounds of
them stored right now. I’ll be eating Vidalia onions all winter. The best
way to keep Vidalias,” he went on, “is to put them in panty hose.”
“Panty hose?”
“Yes,” the wife explained. “You take a pair of panty hose and cut of
the top part.
“Then you put an onion all the way to the place where your foot goes.
Then you tie a knot just above that onion and put in another on top of it.
When the panty hose are full of onions, you hang them up somewhere
and they stay absolutely fresh.
“What you are doing is keeping the onions form touching one another,
which is one reason they go bad if you leave them stored in, say, a
sack.”
“I hope you don’t mind if I tell the rest of the nation about this,” I said
to my friends.
“Fine, but I don’t believe you should mention us by name,” said
the husband while his wife was not in the room. “It could be a little
embarrassing if you wrote that my wife could get fifty pounds of Vidalia
onions in a pair of her panty hose.”
I put my hand on what was left of my baked Vidalia and swore I
would be discreet.

Daydreaming . . . is it just another memory from the “good old
days?” Danny Heitman is hoping for a comeback in daydreaming
and writes . . .
“As another summer arrives at our doorstep, I’ve been thinking of
what my 11-year-old son told me not long ago on a long drive back
from a weekend of camping.
“If it’s OK with you,” Will said from the back seat, “I’m just going to
sit here and daydream for a while.”
I was heartened that Will had decided to claim a few moments for
mental wandering after two days devoted to the outdoor regimens of
his Boy Scout troop. But as I gazed through the rearview at the woods
receding from view, I had to wonder if Will’s plans would produce the
desired result.
Daydreaming, after all, is something that tends to defy planning. The
best daydreams just happen, serendipitously, as we’re doing something
else—the brain slipping its leash for a random walk away from work,
or class, or the Sunday sermon gone on too long.
But my son’s sense of daydreaming as a pastime requiring a certain
amount of room in the day—a slow half-hour or so when thoughts can
float like balloons into the waiting sky—seemed a wise recognition of
the freedom needed to let a mind go. Summer, in our ideal vision of the
season, seems a natural incubator for daydreaming, as office schedules
slacken, and beach vacations beckon, and the close of school liberates
children from campus.
But in squaring off his daydreaming time the way that a grown-up
might pencil in an appointment with the dentist or CPA, Will reminded
me of the degree to which kids these days tend to think in schedules,
even in summer.
Summer camps nudge America’s children from one enrichment
activity to another, and little-league sports perpetually point their little
eyes toward the urgency of a ball in play. Do youngsters have any real
chance for daydreaming during the vacation months—or in any other
time of the year?
A daydream is a stolen pleasure—a moment or two pleasantly robbed
from some more obviously useful task as the brain leaps a fence, goes
adventuring and, with any luck, returns to active duty before anyone knows it’s been AWOL.
But as texts and tweets and ringing cell phones keep a constant claim on attention, such mental escapes
can seem all but impossible for youngsters and grown-ups alike.
If an awareness-raising campaign for daydreaming seems in order, then there’s no better role model
for the cause than the title character of James Thurber’s 1939 short story, “The Secret Life of Walter
Mitty.” A genius at mental digression, the unassuming Mitty evades the tedium of errands with his wife by
casting himself as the star of several fantasies, alternately trying on the roles of rakish military commander,
ingenious surgeon, crafty murder suspect, and tragic hero facing the firing squad.
Thurber’s story took on a life of its own, proving wildly popular among careworn Americans fighting
World War II. Readers seemed to know that even in the midst of a global conflict—or perhaps because of
it—a little mental doodling like Mitty’s could do them a lot of good.
But Thurber was amused, some years after his free-associating hero first appeared in print, to discover
that a British medical journal had coined the term “Walter Mitty syndrome” to describe “pathological
daydreaming.”
Maybe it was inevitable that Mitty would be appropriated to equate daydreaming with illness. Today,
as concern about attention deficit disorder informs the popular culture, a practiced daydreamer might find
himself classified not as an artist of improvisation, but a case to be cured.
Long before Walter Mitty’s wife tried in vain to return him permanently to reality, the world had its
daydreamers—and diligent guardians bent on reforming them. When asked how he happened to create his
famous daydreamer, Thurber suggested that he didn’t so much invent Mitty as simply extend a lengthy
tradition. “There were Walter Mittys, under other names, in the writings of dozens of men ahead of my
time, including Shakespeare,” he told a reader.
So maybe, given its genius for subversion, daydreaming might survive—and even thrive—in a summer
that’s probably going to be much busier than it needs to be.

I thought of my mother when I recently read the following . . . Greg Spitzer writes that at the podiatrist’s
office, his mother listed all her ailments.
“I have a lot of health issues,” she told him.
“Chrohn’s disease, thyroid problems, high cholesterol – that’s just the tip of the iceberg. But I have one
saving grace: I don’t drink.”
The doctor nodded understandingly: “You should.”

Letter to the Editor
To All Oklahomans:
This is an election year, so all should spend the next few months carefully finding out all we can
about the candidates, their proposals, and what issues are the most vital for the nation’s future.
It is important to learn facts about the people running for office and the policy issues they will need
to address, and what are their ideas and stand on those issues. It is sad, but most Americans don’t
know the name of the person or persons representing them in Congress.
We guard the national ideals and voting prerogatives for which our forefathers died. We trust that
our sound principles and attention to detail will yield good government for us in the end. It’s not an
assurance of the best outcome, but it’s a fair protection against the worst. Will Rogers is quoted as
saying, “Thank Heavens, we don’t get all the government we pay for.”
How many can still recite the preamble to the constitution? History teachers would sometimes
require that students memorize the preamble. The words are—“We the people of the United States,
in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, provide for the common defense, establish
domestic tranquility, provide for the general welfare, secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves
and our posterity, do ordain and establish this the constitution of the United States of America.” The
original copy of the constitution is on display, under guard, in the National Archive Building in Washington, D.C. Obama did not prove to be even average in his ability to govern the nation. Let’s hope we are able
to elect someone who has more ability than Obama. Obama is a poor excuse for a president!

It took Jean McCurry’s children a year or two to come up with an excursion for her
that could top a hot air balloon ride—but they did it! Jean was all smiles as she climbed
out the window of the #29 car of Kevin Harvick on May 19th at the Texas Motor Speedway.
Jean rode 4 laps with a professional driver and ran speeds of approximately 160 mph.
Now the question is: What is she going to do next?

Centrahoma Memorial Day Reunion
Letter to the Editor
PLEASANT PLACE
OF REST
Ah, how pleasant – The
Pleasant Grove cemetery, the
place where our folks are laid to
rest, waiting there till the Lord
comes to take them home…
Considering the happenings of
recent months… I wonder.
Last week I attended a hearing
held in Coal Co. Court room
where one group of relatives
of the dead were petitioning
the court to remove ALL
TRUSTEES of the Pleasant
Grove cemetery (who were also
relatives of the dead). The same
trustees who have, and I quote,
“brought the cemetery grounds
up-to-par and kept the whole
cemetery in better condition
than it has been in years.” One
person stated, “I have never seen
the cemetery look this good.”
Just suppose that when His
Honor the judge sat down at his
bench with the petition in his
hand…just suppose he looked
up to address the audience and
observed, not the trustees, but the
residents of the Pleasant Grove
Cemetery; sitting, waiting for
his response to the accusations
made against this faithful group
of hard-working and dedicated
trustees.
Is it reasonable to assume
that the honorable judge would,
then, have made such damaging
statements as: “Though you have
kept the cemetery in the best
condition it’s been in for a long
D.A. Files Application
To Revoke Mixon’s
Deferred Sentence
The Coal County District
Attorney’s Office has filed a
motion to revoke a deferred
sentence handed to former
Coal County employee Tanya
Dawn Mixon (now Jenkins)
for embezzlement of county
property.
In February 2012, Mixon
pleaded guilty to 18 counts
of embezzlement by county
employee. As part of the plea
bargain, she was given a 10year deferred sentence on each
count with the sentences to run
concurrently (together), and
ordered to pay $31,472.51 to
the District Attorney’s office.
Prosecutor Chris Ross said in
February following the plea
agreement that the $31,000plus includes restitution, a
portion of the court costs, and
half the audit fee for a special
audit conducted in Coal County
Commissioner District 1 where
Mixon was employed as
secretary and receiving officer.
Jason’s
On May 22, Assistant District
Attorney Michelle Newton filed
a motion to revoke Mixon’s
deferred sentence for failure to
pay restitution as ordered. The
motion was filed as a “Motion to
Revoke Suspended Sentence.”
The
District
Attorney’s
office said Tuesday that an
amended motion would be filed
showing “deferred” rather than
“suspended.”
On June 6, Newton filed
an amended motion that
includes the nonpayment plus a
misdemeanor charge for driving
under the influence of drugs.
The misdemeanor charge was
filed June 6 after the Coalgate
Police Department stopped
Mixon’s vehicle the night of
June 5.
The Court has scheduled
Mixon’s revocation hearing for
June 14. She has entered a plea
of not guilty to driving under
the influence of drugs and to the
motion to revoke.

time…Let’s face it…you are all
old and won’t be around for very
many more years. What is going
to happen to the cemetery then?
(one member is 48 years “old”).
What? No, surely the honorable
judge did not make that
statement. Perhaps I dozed and
dreamed that part. Did any one
else hear him say that? Surely
not.
It is my understanding that if
one of the trustees should die,
then another would be appointed.
Is that not true? Hopefully all the
trustees will not die at one time.
(Interesting note: The mother
of one trustee lived to be 98
years “old”. At age 95 she was
alert enough to have directed
the work at the cemetery.) Note
also, How many presidents have
ruled our country who were
older than these trustees.
Now, what about a rebuttal?
When one is accused, should
not the accused be permitted to
prove his innocents?
It appeared to this observer
that the honorable judge was
willing to hear the accusations
of the accusers, yet not willing
to allow the accused to show the
evidences they brought to the
hearing…that would prove that
the accusations were false—
including a video of a board
meeting where the accusers
were: out of order, disruptive-to
the point that the meeting had to
be postponed. This same thing
has allegedly happened more
than once.
If this were a real situation,
How sad that the residents of
the Pleasant Grove cemetery
had to sit and listen while the
honorable judge directed his
comments to the persons being
accused, who have finally made
the cemetery a pleasant resting
place, saying that lies had been
told and certain undesirable
actions have been undertaken
that were unbecoming a person
of public service….and mainly
because of a dispute between
two people.
The honorable judge then,
without hearing from anyone,
stated that the two sides had
six (6) months to settle their
differences. At which time
he would set a hearing for 30
days later to select new board
members – period. That was it.
May God bless the residents
of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
May God bless the Trustees
– whomever they turn out to
be. And may God bless the
honorable judge, who has the
awesome responsibility to do
the right thing.

The Centrahoma Memorial Day Reunion was held Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Community
Building. The guests were welcomed by the Cemetery Association. About 65 attended. As usual the
food tables were loaded with all kinds of great food, salads, deserts and drinks.
The Lynch family had the most members attending.
Wayne and Edie Lynch traveled the farthest (from Denver) with Ward Stanberry next (from Houston). Lewis Taylor, Thelma (Heck) Stanberry and Ward Stanberry tied for the oldest attending. The
great granddaughter of F. R. and Juanita Heck was the youngest. I noticed that several families that
always come, were not represented, but did not get any info on that.
The Key family lost two sisters within 2 months —Lucile and Virginia Shepherd. Virginia always
bought stamps from e to help keep the post office. The Mathews family lost two family members.
There are several new graves at the cemetery but I did not get the names.
We are proud of the Veteran’s Memorial and the flag. Thank you Board Members.

Kirsten Jackson will be
the ‘Queen of Theatre’ in a
children’s program. You know
how children giggle and glow
when a performer shares the
“stage” and allows THEM to
act, sing and dance? Well, that’s
exactly what happens when
“Kirsten, Queen of Theatre!”
and her alter-egos, “Ditzy
Daisy” and “Silly Sassy” visit
the library. Bring your children
ages 5-12 years to the library
for this program.
Queen Kirsten dramatically
transforms the Castle of Stories
(the library) into a stage and
teaches her subjects how to
perform a magical fairy tale. But,
alas, the Queen disappears when
Daisy materializes. . . the lovable
but ditzy acting apprentice who
practices her theatrical training
by reading an interactive book
to the children (with lots of
audience participation!).
Finally, six-year-old Sassy,
who is anything but subtle,
teaches her new friends a

Queen of Theatre!” departs
from the Castle of Stories, the
children will giggle all the way
home as they share their own

• V I have enjoyed visiting with many of you during this campaign and will try to get
Eli Mayer places at state competition. Eli
Mayer, Kiamichi Technology Center of Atoka student, competed in the Telecommunications Cabling contest in Tulsa
April 15 and won the gold medal and first place at the state
competition. This qualified him for the National Skills USA
Telecommunications Cabling Competition this summer in
Kansas City, MO. Eli’s instructor at KTC in Atoka is Laurie
Ables. He is from Coalgate and the son of the late Edward (Eddie) Mayer, Jr. and Misty Payne of Hartshorne.
His grandparents are Edward and Pat Mayer of Coalgate,
the late Jim Sallee and Sheila of Stringtown. Great grandmother is Ollie Smith of Stringtown. Eli’s uncles are Ernest,
Sherman and Irvin Cole of Wardville and Terry Cole of Phillips. His aunts are Regina Anderson of Ada, Pam Cole of
Phillips and Lorene Scott of Tupelo.
to as many of you as possible before June 26th.
One of my main regrets during this venture is, I fear I will not have time to meet
and speak with everyone.
I am currently employed by the Coalgate Police Department as a patrolman and
until the Sheriff’s election is over, I will be working with the City of Coalgate’s maintenance crew three days a week, this giving me more time to campaign and meet
with you.
Those of you I haven’t had the chance to visit with, but would like to, please give
me a call at my number below. We can find a time that I can come and visit with
you and answer any questions or concerns that you might have.
I feel like I want the position of Sheriff for the right reasons and care about the
future of our county and the people in it.
I promise to provide a level of discretion that this office should have, treat everyone with dignity and respect and maintain high morals and standards in an office
we can all be proud of.

One Pharmacist’s View...by Wayne Bullard, Pharm D
The Moon, the Train and Sleeping out in the yard
The Great Depression of the
1930s was not kind to rural
Oklahoma. In fact, long after
a measure of prosperity had
returned to America, one little
town I happened to live in called
Centrahoma had failed to get
the word. The only ones that
went on about their business
unaffected by the bad economy
were the kids. Three lingering
grocery stores, a gas station
and Ms. Vestal’s Post Office
fought a brave but losing battle
in keeping up appearances. Oh,
and did I mention the railroad?
The track through Centrahoma
ran from Oklahoma City to
Atoka. It was said to have
gone broke during the first dust
storm and served little purpose
afterwards but to give Hobo’s
and traveling Okies a free ride
out of town. The little train
had tried to drop passenger
service but the people in the
Corporation Commission said
no. They did, however, allow
the train to replace its passenger
train (just had one) with the
little motorized trolley the
locals quickly renamed “The
Dinky.” There was just one. It
headed up in Oklahoma City
and provided service to the
occasional passengers to places
like Ada, Stonewall, Tupelo and
points east as far as Atoka.
After the big war started
(WWII) President Roosevelt
wouldn’t let the defunct railroad
line shut down, worrying that
he might need it for the war
effort. I’m not too sure how
much time he personally spent
worrying about our train service
but the little line was paid to
keep their steam engine and one

would just roll into town with
jewelry at the Clarita flea market on Saturday.
a few empty box cars and park
the train — leaving it at a slow
idle — hissing and spewing
and making some noises that
defied description. Sometimes
it would return and just sit there
huffing and puffing on the north
side of our back yard — just
waiting for some business.
My brother Gerald was a
great believer in fellowship and
it wasn’t long before we had
gotten past the warnings from
the caboose: “You kids can’t
come in here” to just being
family. One cold winter week I
remember us giving away some
of Dad’s stove-wood to make
points with the crew that had
holed up and had to stay with
the train. I don’t know how they
survived in that little caboose on
the rear of that old steamer. But
those were good memories for
Gerald and me. We had hoped
for a short ride, perhaps with us
driving the big steamer — just a
little way up the track and then
back. It never happened but my
brother said, “Doesn’t hurt to
ask.” I think we were the only
ones in our family — maybe in
Centrahoma that appreciated
this little dysfunctional train.
The next summer it got really
hot. It was so hot that mom
decided to put our beds out in
the back yard. There was no
fence and so our move to the
cooler outdoors was very public.
It worked too except my mom
worried that one or more of her
kids might stray and fall into the
well that was right in the middle
of the yard. Mom worried a lot
and mostly out loud so many
nights my little sister and I
felt we should be sleeping in
a life jacket lest we drown in
the well.
But there wasn’t
that much sleeping going on.
The train joined us every night
— that and what seemed like
the brightest full moon since
Xerxes took over Persia.
One night mom asked dad,
“Cecil, what on earth are you
doing?”
“Trying to pull off this light,”
he replied. He was dreaming
and standing up in the bed
trying to find a stringed light
switch to the moon. The
faithful train would sometimes
interrupt its irregular hissing
and noisily pull out in search
of cargo about 3:30AM. Just
in time too: Dad opened up at 4
AM. It was a strange train but
then I suppose we were a little
strange ourselves.
Those hot and wonderful
days are gone but not forgotten.
There were a lot of nice
families with lots of good kids
to occupy our play time those
dreamy long-gone days in
Centrahoma — the place with
an old dysfunctional steam train
that didn’t have much business
or anyplace to go — but neither
did the sleep deprived residents
of Centrahoma.
Have a good weekend and
don’t find yourself without
a place to go this Sunday —
you’re always welcome at your
church.

Thunder
But No Water
By Bo Cox, Norman, OK
Kevin Durant held the trophy and the camera panned over the
crowd; people were openly weeping. You can’t go anywhere in
the metro without seeing OKC Thunder flags or decals. It’s great.
Good for the city and good for the state.
Or is it? I’m as hopeless a sports fan as anyone and definitely
have Thunder fever, but I have to question the seemingly unspoken
but widely-held philosophy of what’s good for OKC is good for
the state. Why?
Maybe I just think too much, maybe I’m a rebel. Maybe I just
oversimplify things. You decide.
One thing’s for sure -- I’ve learned lots of my lessons in places
other than institutions of higher learning. One of those less than
ideal think tanks was the Oklahoma Department of Corrections
where I spent 17 years of my life. In addition to coming to accept
the fact that I needed to be there, I also learned a lot, saw a lot and
heard a lot.
One of my lessons has to do with a fella who lived by the
principle of what’s good for OKC is good for all of Oklahoma;
in this case, Southeastern Oklahoma, the water there and OKC
lawyers.
One of the original OKC lawyers was a guy named Carroll Gregg.
Back in the 50s, OKC began an imminent domain lawsuit against
landowners in Southeastern Oklahoma in order to condemn land
for building Atoka Lake to supply water for OKC. Gregg was one
of the lawyers who helped OKC obtain the land for as little money
as possible.
Forty years later, this same Carroll Gregg showed up in prison.
He’d been all over the news; a hot-shot OKC attorney convicted
of a whole laundry list of sex crimes with a minor. Call me naïve
but there’s no way that happened in a void and no one knew there
were improprieties.
One day Gregg was sitting around the prison compound laughing
about how easy it had been to fleece the old “dirt farmers” out of
their land. He bragged, “A bunch of us got together in OKC and
met (closed doors, anyone?) before we went down there. By the
time we left, we had the land and they were still scratching their
heads and blinking.” Thing was, he didn’t know he was bragging
to a grandson of one of those old “dirt farmers.”
Yes, me. I was shaking when I got up and walked over to him;
leaning down so no one could hear, I told him, “Mister, one of those
men you’re laughing about screwing over was my Grandpa.”
It’s easy to get caught up in OKC fever and forget that Oklahoma
does not begin and end at the crossroads of I-40 and I-35. Isn’t
it time to dispel the “myth” that Oklahoma City must continue to
grow? Shouldn’t their goal be directed toward quality as opposed
to quantity? Wouldn’t the state be better off as a whole if OKC
focused on better managing the plentiful resources that they have
and allowing Southeastern Oklahoma to develop its resources?
Or do we continue to let that unsustainable mindset dictate our
future and the demise of SE Oklahoma while OKC continues to
go to any length to “take” what is deemed necessary for OKC and
its continued, unabated growth?
Knowing our true history and how we got there—people like
Carroll Gregg being the architects of today’s OKC water supply—
will better enable the whole state to move forward without leaving
such damning evidence in the wake.
