CLABBER MCLELLAN CELEBRATES 93RD BIRTHDAY! Arvard “Clabber” McLellan celebrated his birthday at his home in Cottonwood on Sunday,

Coal County Fair Next Week
—2014 fair includes several new events
The Coal County Fair
Board invites everyone to
come to the 2014 County
Fair. It will begin on
Wednesday, August 27,
and end on Saturday,
August 30, at noon.
This year, Summertime
Amusements Company
Back to School in Tupelo

will be setting up a
carnival with rides and
booths on the fairgrounds.
The carnival will be there
all four days of the fair.
Another new activity
will be the mutton
bustin’ contest to be held
on Saturday morning
in the show arena. All
youth 8 years and under
may participate. A prize
will go to the best overall
rider. The entry fee for
the contest is $5.00. The
contest will begin at 9:00
a.m.
The fair will open on
Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.
All Open Class, 4-H and
FFA exhibits and vendors
may set up. Entries will
be accepted from 9:00
a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Fresh food and fresh
flowers may be brought
in on Thursday morning
between 8:00 and 9:00.
The barn will be closed
on Thursday morning for
judging and will reopen
at 1:00 p.m.
The “People’s Choice”
quilt award will once
again be a main event.
Everyone can enter a
quilt in this category.
It does not have to be
made by the exhibitor
and can be 100 years
old with a history or it
can be new. Cash prizes
will be given to the top
three quilts in the show.
You may bring your
quilts in on Wednesday.
Everyone who comes
to the fair will be able
to vote on their favorite
quilt. Winners will be
announced Saturday at
9:30 a.m.
Several events are
planned for Family Fun
Night on Thursday. A
pet show will begin
at 5:30, followed by
the livestock show.
Registration for the pet
show begins at 4:30.
The chili cook-off and
homemade pie contest
will start at 6:00. Chili
must be brought in a
crock pot. All chili and
pie entries will need
to be entered by 5:30
p.m.
This year, with cash
donations from Circle N
and Coalgate LLC dba
Circle N and Sonny’s
Market in Coalgate, cash
prizes will be awarded
to first and second place
winners in the chili cookoff and the homemade
pie contest. First place
winners will receive $50.
Second place winners
will receive $25.
Coalgate FFA is
sponsoring
three
judging contests on
Friday evening for all
Coal County 4-H and
FFA members.
The
events include a Meat
Evaluation contest, an
Entomology contest, and
a live poultry contest.
FFA and 4-H members
interested in judging
these events should
register at the fair barn
no later than 5:30 p.m.
There will be a “walkthrough” prior to the
contests to familiarize
the students with the
rules and procedures.
The big day will be on
Friday and the “School
Day” events. Students
from all over the county
will be attending the fair.
This year’s main feature
will be the “Bug Zoo”
from Oklahoma State
University’s entomology
department. Kids of
all ages will enjoy this
show.
The fair will feature
4-H youth exhibits and
open class exhibits
including quilts, canning,
homegrown vegetables
and fruit, baked goods
and so much more for
the fair goer to enjoy.

Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee. David
married DeeAnn Lanoy on July 26, 1969
at Lehigh, OK. He was employed at Solo
Cup in Ada, OK for 33 years as a fork lift
driver and was also a rancher. David was a
member of the Lehigh Baptist
Church.
Survivors include his wife,

baptized as a Baptist and was a member
of Coleman Baptist Church. Christine
loved gardening, painting, figurines and
crocheting. She was a wonderful mom,
grandma, wife and homemaker.

Wapanucka, OK at the age of 79. He
attended Plainview Elementary, graduated
from Wapanucka High School, attended
Murray State College and was a member
of the ROTC. He married Alma Wanet
Hurt January 31, 1954 in Tishomingo. She
preceded him in death October 30, 2007.
J. W. was a lifelong rancher and horse
trader. He was Johnston County District
2 County Commissioner for 27 years and
worked as a loan officer at Landmark
Bank in Wapanucka. J. W. was a longtime
member of Wapanucka Church of Christ,
was a member of Oklahoma County
Commissioner Association, co-founder of
Wapanucka Cattleman Association, was
a member of American Quarter Horse
Association, Johnston Co Riding Club
and the Caney Ridge Relay Racing Club.
(Their club won the World Champion Relay
Racing at Canyon TX. in 1972.) J. W. was
also a Team Penner.

NEWS – The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 4.2 earthquake near
Guthrie on Tuesday morning.)
OKLAHOMA CITY - Because
the rate of earthquakes recorded in
Oklahoma has increased “remarkably” in less than a year, the U.S.
Geological Survey warned - three
months ago - that the chances of
a “damaging” temblor in central
Oklahoma have increased “significantly.”
Further, the federal agency reported that a statistical analysis indicates oilfield wastewater injected into deep geological formations
is “a likely contributing factor” to
the increased number of ‘quakes.
“I don’t know how long this
has to continue, how severe it has
to get, and how many scientific
studies have to be undertaken, before Oklahomans collectively accept that there is hard evidence that
these earthquakes are not naturally
occurring phenomena,” state Sen.
Jerry Ellis said Tuesday.
The Oklahoma Geological
Survey counted 2,966 tremors in
Oklahoma during the first seven
months of this year, research seismologist Amberlee Darold reported. Of those events, 910, or 30%
of them, registered at or greater
than magnitude 2.5, she said. The
two largest were magnitude 4.5;
one occurred in Logan County,
near Marshall, the other in Oklahoma County, near Luther.
From January 1 through July
31 the USGS recorded seismic activity at numerous other locations
in the state. Tremors were logged
in or near Guthrie, Edmond, Spencer, Medford, Choctaw, Jones,
Harrah, Pawnee, Yale, Stillwater,
Perkins, Enid, Perry, Cherokee,
Tonkawa, Coalgate, Wetumka,
Prague, Hartshorne, McAlester,
Boley, Chandler, Stroud, El Reno,
Langston, Crescent, and McCord
southeast of Ponca City in far
western Osage County.
Several other locations in the
state have been shaken in the nottoo-distant past, Ellis, D-Valliant,
pointed out. For example, a tremor
occurred 19 miles north northwest
of Broken Bow on November 10,
2013; an earthquake struck south
of Blanchard on June 26, 2013,
and a ‘quake occurred early the
next morning between Chickasha
and Mustang.
Veteran independent geologist Bob Jackman of Tulsa noted
that in a news release dated May
2

commented extensively on the
“heightened earthquake activity”
in Oklahoma since 2009.
The federal agency reported
that the rate of earthquakes in the
Sooner State logged since October 2013 had increased by about
50%, “significantly increasing the
chance for a damaging magnitude
5.5 or greater quake” in central
Oklahoma.
An analysis by the USGS and
the Oklahoma Geological Survey
determined that 145 earthquakes
of magnitude 3.0 or greater occurred in Oklahoma during the
four-month period from January
1 through May 2. The previous
record was 109 earthquakes occurring in all of 2013, “while the
long-term average earthquake
rate, from 1978 to 2008, was just
two magnitude 3.0 or larger earthquakes per year,” the USGS news
release revealed.
“[T]he likelihood of future,
damaging earthquakes” in central
and north-central Oklahoma has
grown “as a result of the increased
number of small and moderate
shocks,” the USGS advised.
Furthermore, the USGS reported conducting a statistical
analysis of the “recent earthquake
rate changes” and determined
that “they do not seem to be due
to typical, random fluctuations in
natural seismicity rates.”
The analysis posits that “a
likely contributing factor to the increase in earthquakes is triggering
by wastewater injected into deep
geologic formations,” the USGS
reported. OGS studies “also indicate that some of the earthquakes
in Oklahoma are due to fluid in-

had a baggie in his pants that
contained a substance that field
tested positive for meth.
Hatton said when he advised
Eldridge he would be searched
at the jail and to tell him if he had
anything, Eldridge disclosed
the one baggie and claimed
he didn’t have anything else.
However, during jail book-in,
the jailer found in Eldridge’s
wallet a cellophane package
containing a substance that
field tested positive for meth.
All three defendants have
pleaded not guilty to the
charges and are scheduled for
return court appearances on
August 21.
Morgan has been released
on $11,000 bond. Eldridge
remains in custody on $16,246
bond; Washington remains in
jail on $11,000 bond.

Centrahoma, was charged
August 15 with two counts of
felony aggravated assault and
battery.
According to a probable
cause affidavit filed by deputy
Jerry Ward, when he responded
to a report of a domestic
disturbance at a Centrahoma
residence on the night of
August 12, two men met him
in the yard. James Darrell
Heck had left the residence.
One of the men told him
that his brother, James Darrell
Heck, had attacked him and
had gotten him down and tried
to strangle him. He stated
that his nephew had to hit
James Darrell in his arm with
a baseball bat to get him off.
The nephew told Ward that he
had to hit James Darrell Heck
because he thought James
Darrell was going to kill the
man.
The nephew told Ward that
James Darrell Heck then left
the residence but returned with
a blowgun and nunchucks and
started shooting darts at him
with the blowgun and threw
a knife at him. Undersheriff
Bobby Hatton found the knife
in a ditch across the street from
the residence.
Hatton and trooper John Ivey
spoke with James Darrell Heck
at his residence. Heck had an
injury on his left arm, Ward
said, and Heck told them that
his nephew had hit him with a
baseball bat.
Heck has pleaded not guilty
to the charges and has posted
$10,000 bond. His preliminary
hearing conference is scheduled
for August 21.

Approximately 12,000 injection wells have been drilled in this
state, records of the Oklahoma
Corporation Commission reflect.
The majority of those are wells
used in enhanced recovery, which
seismologists do not consider to be
a potential source of earthquakes.
But at least 3,356 of the wells
are disposal wells, which accepted nearly 1.09 billion barrels of
wastewater - 45.7 billion gallons
- from oil and gas production operations in 2012. The five largest
of those wells, in terms of volumes
of wastewater accepted, are all located in Oklahoma County, east
of Interstate 35 between I-40 and
I-240.
The total volume of saltwater
disposed of in Oklahoma has been
rising steadily: from 844 million
barrels in 2007 to more than 939
million barrels (39.45 billion gallons) in 2011, Corporation Commission ledgers show.
Jackman said 22 disposal wells
in the Oklahoma City - Shawnee Jones - Edmond earthquake swarm
area receive an average of 20 million tons, 96 million gallons, of
saltwater and oilfield wastewater annually. Similarly, a dozen
disposal wells in the Enid - Pond
Creek - Jefferson area accept an
average of 6.8 million tons, 50
million gallons, of oilfield wastewater each year, Jackman said.
In March 2013 a study published in the journal Science
linked the sharp increase in central
Oklahoma earthquakes to disposal
wells (http://www.sciencemag.org/
content/345/6195/448.abstract).
“Subsurface pressure data required to unequivocally link earthquakes to wastewater injection are
rarely accessible,” the authors of
the article wrote. So, “Here we
use seismicity and hydrogeological
models to show that fluid migration from high-rate disposal wells
in Oklahoma is potentially responsible for the largest swarm.”
“We’re not suggesting that ‘oil
patch’ disposal wells ought to be
shut down,” Ellis said. “But I do
believe we could do a better job of
siting and managing those wells.”
Two measures could have a
profound effect on the incidence
of earthquakes in Oklahoma, Jackman contends. One would be to
limit the volumes of wastewater
authorized for injection in any disposal well.
The other would be to establish
disposal wells “away from sensitive fault lines.” For example, although Corporation Commission
records indicate 304 disposal wells
are operational in Stephens County, no earthquakes have been reported in that area, Jackman said.
“Only a ‘flat-earther’ would
maintain that there is absolutely
no connection whatsoever between the enormous volumes of
saltwater that are being injected
underground in Oklahoma, and the
swarm of earthquakes we’re experiencing,” Jackman asserted.
To “more accurately determine
the locations and magnitudes” of
the earthquakes in this state, the
Oklahoma Geological Survey has
increased the number of its monitoring stations. The OGS now operates a seismograph network of
15 permanent stations and 17 temporary stations, the USGS said.

year with five new teachers.
One teacher who joined the

2013-2014 school year is also

Stephanie McNutt joined
Coalgate Public Schools in
January 2014 to teach Algebra
I, Business Math, and 7th and
8th grade computers. She also
coaches the CHS cheerleading
squad.
Mrs. McNutt is a 1993
graduate of Coalgate High
School and a graduate of East
Central University. She first
taught at Olney Public School
and then at Atoka Elementary.
Stephanie is married to
Jeremy McNutt. They have
four children – Makayln, Alex,
Mersadey, and Axel.
Quin Hall, M.S. CF-SLP,
graduated from Northeastern
State University in 2012
with a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Speech-Language
Pathology. In 2014, he earned
his Master of Science in

Mr. Aue has taught band
21 years, mostly in Texas and
Oklahoma. In addition to his

a music store about six years
and drove an 18-wheeler for

Larry Childers is a graduate

in Physical Education Safety
and Health and minors in
American History, Oklahoma
History and Government. He
served in the U.S. Marine
Corps from 1973-1976.
Childers’ teaching career
spans 38 years in Oklahoma
public schools.
He has
coached high school and
middle school football, power
lifting, basketball and track;
and high school baseball,
slow-pitch softball, and boys
golf. He served as a basketball
official for eight years.
Mr. Childers’ coaching
highlights include Head Coach
Lake Eufaula All-Star Classic,
1995; District C4 Coach of
the Year, 1999; and Oil Bowl
Coach (Oklahoma 38 Texas
7), 2005. In 2013 he was

Wildcats to scrimmage at Elmore City
—Coalgate football players get physical with full-contact drills underway

Coalgate High School
Coach Dusty Newberry needs
only one word to describe the
current mood of his Wildcat
football players.
“Excited,” the CHS boss
said of his players. “They are
excited to be here and excited
to be playing football again.
It’s a lot of fun to be around
players who feel like that.”
Coalgate is now in the
second phase of pre-season
football camp. The first phase
was the reporting date last
Monday and the four days of
non-contact drills.
Phase two began last Friday
when the Wildcats put on full
pads and began the full-pads,
full-contact workouts.
“From our prospective (as
coaches), we were excited
see them put on the pads,” the
coach said. “Without pads, you
can go over a lot of the X’s and
O’s. But it is always exciting
to put pads on and see the kids
that want to hit somebody.
That’s a whole different deal.
You’ll find out a lot when they
are hitting each other in the
contract drills. I’ll find out
pretty quick which ones are
going to be the most aggressive
out there in practice.”
Coach Newberry approaches
the pre-season scrimmages in
the same way.
“We will be playing other
teams and other people,” he
said. “We want to see which
kids are going to be aggressive
with the opponent. That is the
biggest thing for the coaches
to watch.”
CHS will continue to add
things to the offensive and
defensive units. However, the
calls during scrimmages will
be more of a base offense and
a base defense.
“As an example, when we
scrimmage we don’t plan on
doing a lot of stunting and
blitzing and those kinds of
things. We want our kids to
go out there and play hard.
We want to see which ones
can do their job in that kind of
environment. We’ll be looking
at it this week when we have
our first scrimmage.”
The Wildcats will scrimmage
at Elmore City on Friday,
August 22. It will be a twoteam event.
Coalgate’s second scrimmage
will come on Thursday, August
28. The Wildcats will be at
home to entertain the Antlers
Bearcats in another two-team
scrimmage.
Coach Newberry knows
that the Wildcats will need
excellent coaching to improve.
He is proud of the 2014 staff
and will be working hard with
the assistant coaches to make
the CHS players the best they
can be this season. Here is a
review of the coaching staff
and the areas they will be
primarily responsible for on
offense and defense:
Dusty Newberry – head
coach, defensive coordinator,
inside linebackers and running
backs.
Rob Green – offensive
coordinator. Green was most
recently a coach at Liberal,
Kansas. He has also coached
at Grove, Piedmont, and at the
college level at Northeastern
Oklahoma A&M and Missouri
Southern.
Wade Corder (third
season) – wide receivers on
offense and secondary players
(cornerbacks and safeties) on
defense.
Larry Childers – offensive
line and defensive line.
Ernie Fanning – tight ends
and defensive linemen.
Jered Truett – will assist
the coaches on game nights.
All the coaches will share
duties in teaching special
teams play.
The coaches are still looking
for players to step up and win
starting roles or earn playing
time in a back-up role or in
rotation with other players.

Coalgate man arrested at
accident scene
A 21-year-old Coalgate man
was arrested the evening of
August 17 after trooper Mark
Benedict was called to the
scene of a one-vehicle accident
on Roundhill Road one mile
south of SH 43.
Klyford Troy David Palmer
was charged August 18
with misdemeanor driving
a motor vehicle while under
the influence of alcohol
aggravated. Palmer’s state
test results indicated a breath
alcohol content of 0.24 and
0.21, according to Benedict’s
probable cause affidavit. A
BAC reading of 0.08 or more
means the driver is intoxicated
under Oklahoma law.
A
reading of 0.15 or more is
deemed aggravated driving
under the influence.
Benedict said when he
arrived at the scene, Palmer’s
pickup was in a field on the east
side of the road with barbed
wire from a fence tangled on
it. No injuries were reported.
Palmer entered a plea of
not guilty during his initial
court appearance. He is in
custody on $1,000 bond and
is scheduled for a return court
appearance on September 12.
Drug Arrest
A 20-year-old Denver, CO
woman was arrested August 11
on SH 3 west of Coalgate for
possession of marijuana and
drug paraphernalia.
Trooper Benedict said when
he stopped a vehicle driven
by Monica Laterine Jarvis for
speeding, he noticed a strong
odor of marijuana coming from
the vehicle. Jarvis admitted
that she had been smoking
marijuana and had some in the
vehicle. Benedict recovered
three plastic baggies containing
what field tested to be marijuana
and several drug paraphernalia
items.
Jarvis has pleaded not guilty
to the charges and was released
on $2,000 bond. Her case is set
for September 12.

Housing Authority. The Bids to be mailed to 51 Levy Annex, Coalgate, OK
74538 or turned into the office in a sealed envelope on or before the Bid opening
date and time listed below:
Bid Opening date will be September 3, 2014 at 2 P.M. Deadline to submit the
sealed bid will be on this date.
The successful bidder will guarantee price for 30 days and deliver said
material to the Coalgate Housing Authority address: 51 Levy Annex, Coalgate,
OK. The delivery of such material shall be coordinated and specified by the
maintenance supervisor when and where it shall be stored on said property and
the quantities to be delivered. Bid shall detail # of years on warranty of units.
Successful bidder agrees to replace any damaged material that the Housing
Authority receives. Should any more material be needed that is not listed the
Coalgate Housing authority agrees to purchase said material as EXTRA COST
to the Authority. The CHA agrees to pay invoice within 30 days after receiving
bill. After completion of installation of A/C units any material left remaining shall
be returned to successful bidder for a credit to the CHA.
The Coalgate Housing authority has the right to reject any and all bids.

The Board of County Commissioners of Coal County met for a regular scheduled meeting on
Monday, August 11th, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. in the conference room of the County Commissioners Building.
Michael Hensley called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.
Roll was called by Michael Hensley. Those present were: Michael Hensley, Chairman, Johnny

Johnny Ward made a motion to appoint David Johnson as a receiving officer for District 2 to
replace Jerry Nanney. Brock Jones seconded. Ward, Jones and Hensley approved.
Johnny Ward made a motion to appoint Landi Munholland to replace Tara Sandmann as
receiving officer for the County Clerkʼs office and the courthouse. Brock Jones seconded. Ward, Jones
and Hensley approved.
Michael Hensley said Donna Bolin from the DHS had called him a few weeks ago regarding a
leak in the old sprinkler system. He said he contacted a couple of plumbers, but it has copper wiring and
the people he contacted werenʼt able to fix it. Also, the leak has damaged the flooring in the bathroom,
and they are wanting new commercial tile and a new vanity. Johnny Ward said the county may need to
advertise for bids to see if a licensed plumber may be interested in the project. Hensley said the projects
may need to be split up between the plumbing and flooring/vanity. Johnny Ward made a motion to
advertise for bids. Brock Jones seconded. Ward, Jones and Hensley approved.
Johnny Ward said ACCO is requesting that each county pass a resolution so that phone
companies are required to notify the BOCC before they install an underground line. The companies will
provide the county with contact information of the installation manager or supervisor and the location of
the lines, including a map. Ward made a motion to approve the resolution. Brock Jones seconded.
Ward, Jones and Hensley approved.

Cherry Hefley said Larry Eddings has looked at a light in her office that is making a buzzing
sound. He told her if the county would buy new ballasts, he will replace the existing ones and not charge
labor. Johnny Ward said she could buy the ballasts out of the sales tax account.
Johnny Ward said he has spoken with Rodger Wilson, Roger Cosper and Wanda Utterback about
revamping the EMS contract between Coal County and the City of Coalgate. Ward said State Auditor and
Inspector Gary Jones said the contract needs more information as to what all they use the funds for and
what the City of Coalgate puts into it. Ward said the EMS Board is looking into it.
Brock Jones made a motion to adjourn at 9:30 a.m. Johnny Ward seconded the motion. Jones,
Ward and Hensley approved.

A few weeks back we received a really nice letter from
a dear friend of ours and I wanted to share it with our
readers.
Dear Bro. Bill and Sis. Dayna,
I was in Coalgate yesterday and purchased a newspaper.
When I was a gospel DJ at KEOR radio out of Atoka I loved
reading the Coalgate paper. When returning home I started
reading and came across the “Country Comments” and saw
your name. I suppose you still own the Holdenville and Allen
paper also. Well I read the column and loved it. This paper
reminds me of the weekly newspaper I grew up reading in
Danville, AR. I love the community’s news.
I loved the comments this week in “Country Comments”.
I also remember the “good old days,” also of the “Spit and
Whittle bunch”. It has been several years since I have used
my knife. My brother, six years older than I and our grandpa
made me toys from whittling and Sir, I thought I was RICH.
I have heard many stories and I thought they were all true!
My brother would whittle and tell my ghost stories to keep
me from going home with our grandpa so he could.
Growing up it never took much to make me happy. I
owned a knife like my grandpa’s and I owned a “Bean
Flip”. I hunted bears in Ark. Ha Ha! I was the only girl in a
neighborhood of only boys.
On Sundays the most trouble one could get in was
chewing gum in church and I did and climbing and sitting in
the Mulberry tree watching my Mother look for me. I was
between 4 and 7 years of age at this time.
I can remember in years of the late 50s and 60s after
repenting at the Shawnee Church of The Nazarene, I was
so hungry and thirsty for the things of God. I found this
station from Holdenville (KVYL) it had Sunday afternoon
preaching and I ate it up each Sunday. I had no idea that
you one time owned this station until I researched your name
on the internet after finishing the paper. Each time I passed
the road that leads down to where the station used to be, I
thank God for providing me with food from its air waves.
My mother was Jehovah Witness and was not very happy
with me and KVYL. I am thankful that God moved us to
Shawnee so I had a neighbor to take me to church. I was 13
years of age.
I remember sitting on the fence around the barn crying
and asking the Lord to help me do something for Him. I was
just a kid when this happened about 4 to 8 years of age.
I knew nothing about salvation. No one had ever told me
about repentance—I just saw the lives some people lived. I
preached from the time I was 5 years of age and my Bible
was a Sears Catalog and I couldn’t read. God doest bless
ignorance I guess. The Shawnee Church of the Nazarene
was the first place I could attend and had some older people
to pray for me. My pulpit was an old wood apple box.
I have a copy of Dale Evans and Roy Roger’s Marriage
Certificate that the Museum at Sulphur gave me a few years
ago.
I had intended to drive over to visit with you all one day
and get a hamburger at place where an Assembly of God
lady runs. April 17th, I was taking the trash out before we
went on Easter break from school and fell and broke my
hand. I keep busy at two schools being a sub. I was taking
the trash from the library to the dumpster. I knew the janitor
would not do it for another 5 days. On my way I stepped
on some bubble gum. I set the trash sack over the fence
then I stepped over the fence on the sack, then when I was
pulling my left foot over the fence I got it almost over and
became unbalanced and started to fall. Since the gum was
on my right shoe, I could not balance, fell into the fence and
broke my left hand. I am in therapy. I have been one handed
since April 17. After breaking my hand I didn’t have time
to go to ER. I went home, cleaned up, came to Holdenville
Assembly of God to Speak. On my way home Sister Donna
Gustin (thank the Lord she was with me) said you are going
to ER. I thought it was bruised. I went to Ark., a few weeks
ago to preach and any where else, driving one handed.
I am glad I have discovered your column and will have
to subscribe to the Coalgate paper now.

I was in Shawnee this past week and when I stopped for
a red light there was a man on a motorcycle in front of me.
The back of his shirt read . . . IF YOU CAN READ THIS,
BARBARA FELL OFF.
It reminded me of my friend, the late Eldon Burcham.
He and his wife, Clara, were on vacation and had stopped
to get gas. Eldon got back in the car and about twenty
miles down the road the highway patrol pulled him over.
The patrolman asked Eldon if he was missing anything.
“No, not that I can think of.”
“How about your wife?”
Eldon thought she was in the backseat resting because
that was where she when they pulled into the station. He
assumed she had gotten back in. Wrong Assumption!
Eldon said it was a very long trip back home.
Barbara and Clara need to meet and share stories!

From my “wish I had written that” file . . . Another week,
another botched lethal injection, said Arit John.
Last week, convicted murderer Joseph R. Wood III snorted and gasped his way through a
deeply disturbing two-hour execution in Arizona, before finally dying – the third death row
inmate to experience a botched lethal injection this year.
Some death penalty supporters have called for the supposedly humane procedure to
be replaced by the firing squad or guillotine. But in general, don’t expect a few messy
executions to “change anyone’s mind about capital punishment.” Support for the death
penalty has dropped just five points since last year, when 64 percent of people polled favored
capital punishment.
Why has the pro-execution majority been so unmoved by the spate of slow, agonizing
deaths? Simple: Most people don’t care if convicted murderers suffer. In fact, some prefer it
that way. They ask, Why shouldn’t a man like Wood, who “brutally murdered his estranged
girlfriend and her father”, experience the kind of pain and terror he inflicted on his victims?

same manner that their victims were?

This past week I watched an interview with the parents of a young lady that died in a car
wreck. She would have soon become a Registered Nurse.
The parents had co-signed her student loan note realizing that as an RN she would be
able to pay it back. After her unexpected death, the parents received a notice that they
would be liable for what she owed.
It appears that they are going to have to sell their home and possessions to pay their
daughters loan.
It is amazing that our government will forgive foreign countries of billions of dollars of
debt but sue the parents of a student that was tragically killed.
Students should be allowed to erase their debts via bankruptcy, said George Leef. We let
people escape from heavy credit card and medical debt, so why not college debt?
A major objection is that the government, and therefore taxpayers, would be on the
hook, since most student loans are backed by the government. That’s why we should force
schools to bear the risk instead.
Colleges currently “have absolutely nothing to lose when they enroll students who have
borrowed for the tuition but have minimal academic ability and interest.” Putting schools
on the hook for a bankrupt graduate’s loan payments would have dramatic consequences,
forcing institutions to stop ”trying to recruit any warm body who can use government
loans to cover the tuition” and think instead about a student’s “academic ability and
future prospects.”
It would be good for students, too, giving them an incentive “to show that they are worth
taking a risk on, not just that they’d like to give college a try.”
I’d much prefer that the government get out of the college lending business altogether.
But in the meantime, it makes eminent sense to force colleges to “have some ‘skin in the
game.’”

Speaking of money . . . Three out of four American teens lack the skills to decipher a pay
stub. That’s just one of the sobering findings from the first international test of teenagers’
financial literacy. American 15-year-olds posted barely average scores, with the U.S. ranking
in the middle of the 18 countries whose students participated.
The top group of teenagers was from China (specifically Shanghai). The average kid there
ranked at about the same level as the high U.S. scorers.
The test, called PISA, or the Program for International Student Assessment, is best
known for shining a spotlight on American kids’ wobbly knowledge of math and science.
It is administered worldwide on a variety of subjects every three years. In 2012 a financial
literacy section was added, and the results were released July 9.
Last year education researchers at the University of Cambridge reviewed more than 150
papers and studies and concluded that basic financial habits are pretty much set by age 7. A
pivotal 2009 University of Wisconsin report showed that children as young as 3 are able to
grasp basic financial concepts like value, exchange and choice.
Teaching kids about money is terrifying for parents who feel shaky about their own
financial knowledge. And it is even harder for families on the lowest rungs of the economic
ladder: The PISA results show a strong correlation between a family’s socioeconomic status
and their kid’s financial literacy. But you don’t need to be a financial planner to teach your
child to save a dime of every dollar, compare prices when you shop, or avoid high-interest
credit-card debt.
Studies have shown that simply opening a college savings account for a child, even if it
contains an extremely small sum, will exponentially increase the chances that he will go to
college. In 2009 Pew’s Economic Mobility Project found that 71% of children born to lowincome parents who are good savers move up the economic ladder, compared with only 50%
of children from low-income households that don’t save.
While teaching financial literacy to your own children is a challenge, I’ve found that most
parents are eager to learn the basics. As a member of the President’s Advisory Council
on Financial Capability, I helped to develop the website MoneyAsYouGrow.org, which
synthesizes much of the best research and educational materials available into a handful of
financial rules of thumb for each age group. The site has drawn a million visitors since its
launch in May 2012, many of them mothers on Pinterest.
The first step is to talk about money with your children, though this has long been taboo in
many American households. When kids are very young, you can stress the virtues of waiting
and delaying gratification, and as children get a bit older you can drive home the idea that
spending less than you have is the linchpin of a healthy financial life.
Doing so may make parents savvier as well. After Sesame Street ran a financial-education
initiative (including videos and educational materials) in 2011, an impact study by the
research firm Fluent showed the program had taught preschoolers about money and resulted
in more parents saving.
Most parents don’t care where the U.S. falls in the PISA rankings, but a report last month
by the University of Arizona – from a study tracking the financial lives of more than 1,000
young adults –found that al couple of years after graduating from college, half of the students
were receiving financial support from family (read: mostly mom and dad) even if they had
full-time jobs.
You don’t need to be able to calculate compound interest yourself to get your kids interested
in saving – though the personal finance writer in me says it can be fun to sit with your kids,
plug numbers into the calculator on investor.gov, and see how long they’d have to save to
reach a thousand bucks.

High School Fall Baseball
Tournament opens a 3-day
run on Thursday. Coach
Clay Weller’s Tigers will be
hosting the event, which runs
through the championship
finals on Saturday.
Tupelo begins the 8-game
tournament with a familiar
opponent. The Tigers will
meet Rock Creek in a 4:30
p.m. showdown at the THS
baseball facility.
These
same two teams met Monday
afternoon at Rock Creek in
a regular-season contest.
Tupelo was 0-3 going into
the week.
The mission will get even
harder this weekend. That’s
because some outstanding
clubs will come to town
for the double-elimination
tournament. The strongest
three teams in the field
include Byng, Silo and
Tushka. It’s likely that two
of those three will advance
to the title game. All three
are state tournament caliber
teams.
“It’s a good field,” Coach
Weller said when announcing
the tournament.
As for Tupelo, the goal will
be to be competitive against
the best area programs.

always
schedules top foes during the
regular season. He believes
his Tigers will benefit from
such an approach as long
as they don’t get too “beat
down” as they go along
toward the playoffs.
Tupelo is coming off three
losses in three games last
week.
The Tigers fell 5-4 on
August 11 in an 8-inning
contest at Vanoss.
Tupelo rallied for 3 runs in
the top of the seventh inning
to knot the score at 4-4.
However, Vanoss scratched
out the game-winning run
in the bottom of the eighth
inning.
THS hurler Bry Bratcher
was tagged with the pitching
loss. Bratcher worked the final
two and two-third innings of
relief after replacing starter
Tyler Daffern.
The top offensive players
for Tupelo included Corby

State Capitol and it’s my job to return the money to the owners and
