Collecting Palms
Palms that were blessed last year on Palm Sunday are now being collected in preparation for the beginning
of Lent. The palms will be burnt, and the ashes imposed on the forehead, on Ash Wednesday, March 5.
Please deposit the palms in the basket that has been placed in the commons.
The connection between Palm Sunday and Ash Wednesday highlights an important truth: We
undertake penance knowing that Christ has already conquered sin by his Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
The Lord’s victory is meant to be ours as well. The palm is a symbol of Christ’s victory, as we read in the
Book of Revelation: “After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race,
people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches
in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the
Lamb.’” (7:9–10).
Roses are Red
It will now be possible to purchase flowers either for the altar ($50) or the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe
($25), in honor or in memory of someone. This noble custom makes the church beautiful and contributes
to the splendor of divine worship. (Please note that purchasing flowers in honor or in memory of someone
is not the same as a Mass intention, which applies the benefits of the Eucharistic Sacrifice to a specific
person or need.)
Rite of Acceptance
The parish will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens on Wednesday, February 19 at 7:00pm. This
rite formally acknowledges and welcomes those adults who are preparing to receive the Sacraments of Christian
Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. Through the Rite of Acceptance, those preparing to receive these
three sacraments will become “catechumens” (literally, “hearers”) of the Word of God.
The Rite of Acceptance is not a Mass but rather a Liturgy of the Word followed by the giving of the Sign of the
Cross and intercessions for the catechumens. All parishioners are welcome to attend, in order to support those
preparing to enter the Church at Easter.

Do you find it easy to pray?
Is prayer an integral part of your day? Do you hear God’s voice in your daily life, and know how to respond
accordingly? For many of us, the answer to these questions is, “no.” We all desire an intimate
relationship with God. But, since learning to “say our prayers” as children, we never moved
beyond rote recitation to an authentic conversation with God.
For most of us, prayer becomes a source of frustration as we struggle to calm our minds and
find even a few minutes to set aside to pray. In our busy lives prayer is seen as a luxury, when in
reality it is at the foundation of a healthy spiritual life.
The good news is you can overcome your difficulties with prayer, and it is easier than you
might think. Sign up for the OREMUS Study Program which will be held on the Thursdays of Lent
from 6:00-7:00pm. Please see the bulletin flyer and the promotional table in the parish
commons. If you have questions, please contact Terrie Stone at (434)792-9456 or terrie828@gmail.com
Saturday Morning Retreat
Into Great Silence is a film that seeks to understand the lives of the Carthusian monks through their daily prayers, tasks,
rituals, and rare outdoor excursions. This film allows entrance into the monastic life rather than simply depict the
monastic life. Please join us Saturday, March 8 from 9:00am to 12:00N, as we take some time to enjoy the silence and
listen for God's quiet voice, while learning of the beauty and benefits of the monastic lifestyle. For more information or to
sign up, please contact Terrie Stone (terrie828@gmail.com).
Women’s Health Fair
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus will hold a Women’s Health Fair, Saturday, February 22 from 9:00am1:00pm at Sacred Heart School in the Multi-Purpose Room.
Sanctuary Enhancement
Exquisite new furnishings now adorn the sanctuary of the church. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, which
contains the Church’s norms for the celebration of Mass, reminds us that, “Sacred buildings and requisites for divine
worship should be truly worthy and beautiful and be signs and symbols of heavenly realities” (no. 288). Therefore, the
furnishings in the church point to the celestial dimension of divine worship: In the Mass and other forms of the liturgy, we
truly experience heaven.
Please note that NO operating income has been used to pay for the sanctuary enhancement; the Philip N. and
Frances K. Daly Trust gave a generous grant ($25,000) for this work, which could not be used to pay for the parish’s
ordinary expenses. The reredos will eventually include a tabernacle that has already been selected. —Fr. Tony
Vacation Bible School
It’s hard to believe that we are already thinking about summertime and all the fun events that will be
happening this summer. However, we are ready to begin planning Vacation Bible School for this summer and
we need your help. Vacation Bible School will take place Monday, June 9 to Friday, June 13. Anyone
interested in assisting with crafts, Bible study, games, snacks or leading groups, please see Terrie Stone in
the parish office.
Racheal’s Vineyard Retreat
The retreat will be held March 28-30 at Shalom House Retreat Center, for women and men who have known regret,
sorrow, guilt or shame from abortion. Spend some time this Lent experiencing God’s great mercy. The weekend combines
living scripture meditations, spiritual exercises, and discussions in a guided process that leads to the heart of God’s love
and compassion. Please Contact Kay Marie Geiger, (804) 330-3137 : kmg4hope@verizon.net or Molly Smith at Richmond
Church of Epiphany (804) 794-0222 or you may view the website: www.rachelsvineyard.org
The school will be closed Monday, February 17 in
observance of Presidents’ Day.
Tickets for the annual school auction are
now available! This year’s theme is
“Mardi Gras Masquerade.” The event
will be held Saturday, March 1, from
6:00pm–10:00pm in the Holy Family Gym.
Tickets are $32.00 per person. Chef
Patrick Ruocco will be preparing a New
Orleans menu featuring a recipe he prepared as a contestant
on Food Network’s “Restaurant Express” TV show. The
event features music entertainment provided by Norm
Aquilo, live and silent auctions, and adult beverages. Tickets
may be purchased in the school office or church office.
Donation of auction items will be greatly appreciated. Please
contact Donna Comper for more information.
El Vallarta Mexican Restaurant will donate 10% of all
sales on Wednesday, February 26 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm to
the 8th grade class for their spring trip. Advise the restaurant
staff you are supporting SHS!

MINISTERIO HISPANO

MORNING OFFERING TO THE SACRED HEART
O, God, I offer You all my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for the intentions for which He
pleads, and offers Himself in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in thanksgiving for your favors, in reparation for my sins, and in humble
supplication for my temporal and eternal welfare, for the needs of our holy Mother the Church, for the conversion of sinners, and for the
relief of the poor souls in purgatory.
