WYCC PBS Chicago
brings the popular
Fourth Doctor back to
television to take
viewers through both
time and space.
D
octor Who began in 1963 and
has developed a passionate
fandom over the last 50 years.
The popular science fiction series
is now onto its Twelfth Doctor, but
longtime viewers fondly remember
the Fourth Doctor, played by actor
Tom Baker. Baker portrayed the
Time Lord for seven seasons, from
1974-1981, the longest run for one
Doctor in the show’s history.
Fans new and old can get to know the
Fourth Doctor in all seven seasons
of Doctor Who: Tom Baker Movies,
airing Saturdays at 10 p.m. Each
incarnation has its own personality,
and Baker’s incarnation is known for
his bohemian spirit and wide-eyed
wonder. He’s warm and witty, but still
possesses the alien unpredictability
that can be found in all incarnations.
Join the Fourth Doctor and his
companion Sarah on their adventures
throughout the universe, transported
by their trusty TARDIS, saving humans
and aliens alike from a variety of
monsters and disasters.

Architecture’s Purpose
Whether you’re thinking of remodeling or renovating your
own home, or have an interest in unique or historic buildings
from around the world, WYCC PBS Chicago has a variety of
programs to meet your architecture needs.
This Old House, airing Saturdays at 12:30 p.m., is TV’s
longest-running home improvement show. Over the course of
several episodes, the pros (Norm Abram, Tom Silva, Richard
Trethewey, Roger Cook, and host Kevin O’Connor) complete a
whole-house renovation.
Sometimes viewers have questions, and that’s where Ask
This Old House (airing Saturdays at 3:30 p.m.) comes in. The
experts answer questions about smaller remodeling projects and
even make house calls. There are also appearances by special
guests.
To learn about the best new architecture being built around
the country, tune in for Cool Spaces! on Sundays at 4 p.m.
This program covers all aspects of the project, from the original
idea and design to how it was built and what it’s used for today.
The study of architecture can be
used in a wide variety of professions,
from engineering to construction
to art and more. The City Colleges
of Chicago offer many architecture
courses that lead to the completion
of a number of degree pathways, as
well as courses in other disciplines
that use architecture.
Please see the CCC Course
Catalog for additional courses:

Each episode focuses on a specific type of functionality, such as
performance spaces, art spaces, and healthcare spaces.
For a more historic take on architecture, watch Castles:
Britain’s Fortified History, airing Sundays at 7 p.m. Historian
Sam Willis traces the story of Britain’s castles and their unique
role in the country’s history, art, and literature throughout the
centuries.
Please see the listings for more information.

ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY
with
John Singleton
John Daniel Singleton was born on January 6, 1968, in Los Angeles, California. The neighborhood
where he grew up in south-central L.A. experienced a lot of violence, which would go on to influence
Singleton’s work.
Singleton attended the University of Southern California to study screenwriting. He won a
number of awards and signed a contract with the Creative Artists Agency before he even graduated.
Singleton’s first film, Boyz n the Hood, told the story of three childhood friends who faced
poverty and gang violence. This coming-of-age story was well-received by critics and moviegoers
alike. Singleton was nominated for two Academy Awards with this film, for best screenplay and best
director. He was the first African American to be nominated for best director.
Singleton’s subsequent films produced in the 1990s, including Poetic Justice, Higher Learning,
and Rosewood, did not achieve the same level of fame as his first, but he has worked with many A-list
celebrities, such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Mark Wahlberg. He also worked on the action
film 2 Fast 2 Furious, part of the popular The Fast and the Furious franchise.
Viewers can learn more about Singleton’s creative inspirations during his episode of On Story, airing
Sunday, June 5 at 6 p.m., with an encore presentation on Thursday, June 23 at 9 p.m.
