Musicians from around the
country join WYCC PBS Chicago
and the Mayne Stage for an
at-home concert experience.
Music on the Mayne Stage presents a
fantastic exploration into the diverse traditions
of American music. This 10-part series captures
intense performances from a lineup of up-andcoming artists in a format that not only treats
viewers to a unique concert experience, but to
intimate artist interviews for an added in-depth
musical journey.
For over a year, WYCC PBS Chicago
partnered with Mayne Stage to bring this weekly
music series to your television screen—all filmed
before a live audience in Chicago’s Rogers Park
neighborhood. “Our partnership with Mayne
Stage allows us to maintain a strong connection
with Chicago’s loyal public television viewers,”
says Paul Buckner, general manager for WYCC.
Music on the Mayne Stage premieres
on Friday, September 11 at 9 p.m. with new
episodes airing Fridays at 9 p.m. through
mid-November. Concerts encore Saturdays at
6 p.m. and 12 midnight. For the multi-platform
Mayne Stage experience, viewers can also enjoy
watching the series on YouTube.
Seryn
Friday, September 11 at 9 p.m.
Their unique sound is hard to define using
just one genre, but Seryn has been described
by their fans as a “folk-pop” band. The band
includes Trenton Wheeler (vocals and ukulele),
Nathan Allen (guitars and vocals), Aaron Stoner
(bass and vocals), Jenny Moscoso (vocals, guitars,
and banjo), Scarlett Deering (violin and vocals),
and Jordan Rochefort (drums).
Miss Tess & The Talkbacks /
Nick Shaheen
Miss Tess & The Talkbacks create their own
sound by borrowing from all sorts of American
roots music, including classic country, honkytonk, southern blues, New Orleans jazz and
swing, swamp pop, and early rock’n’roll.
They have recently been exploring a more
country-rock vibe.
Prior to the release of Nick Shaheen’s new LP,
Sauvignon, the young upstart performed songs
visiting topics well beyond his years. Far from
just another good-hearted singer/songwriter
with an acoustic guitar, Nick Shaheen—along
with his cast of friends and area musicians—
paints an always moving picture.
JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound
Described as “the real deal” by the Chicago
Tribune, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound are
the epitome of post-punk soul. Their songs
are almost more of a rallying cry against the
era we live in. The bandmates (Billy Bungeroth,
Kevin Marks, Jeremy Tromburg, Theodore
Berry the IV, and Jovia Armstrong) don’t just give
concerts—they put on a theatrical extravaganza.

Olive and Otto, investigate
weird and unusual
phenomena around them
and use math to put

occurrence that is too strange for the Odd Squad as

Whether you’ve never picked up a paintbrush or are simply
looking for new subjects to paint, WYCC PBS Chicago offers a
lineup of how-to painting programs two days a week.
Bob Ross gained a loyal following of painting enthusiasts
thanks in part to his calming demeanor and words of
encouragement. Viewers can experience The Best of the Joy of
Painting Mondays at 1 p.m. and pick up tips on how to paint a
variety of natural landscapes.
Marine-life artist and conservationist Wyland invites
viewers to Wyland’s Art Studio (airing Mondays at 1:30 p.m.),
where he goes step-by-step through his painting process. The
stars of his artwork are animals found throughout the Pacific
Ocean, including dolphins, sharks, and sea turtles.
Frank Clarke Simply Painting Around the World:
China (airing Mondays at 2 p.m.) is a unique combination of
travelogue and how-to. Clarke, an Irish artist, travels around
China to take in its art, culture, and architecture and uses
that as inspiration when he returns to his studio in Beijing. He
encourages fellow watercolorists to “have some more fun.”

ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY
with
Martin Yan
Chef Martin Yan was born in Guangzhou, China, and developed a passion for food
at a young age. His first culinary apprenticeship was at a Hong Kong restaurant when he
was just 13 years old. He received further instruction at Hong Kong’s Overseas Institute
of Cookery. Yan made his way to North America by immigrating to Calgary, Canada. He
then earned his MS degree in Food Science from the University of California, Davis.
Yan’s big television break came when he started Yan Can Cook, a Chinese cooking
show. His warmth and wit drew viewers in, creating a loyal following from around the

Yan has taught at the California Culinary Institute, Johnson & Wales University
(where he also has an honorary degree), the Chinese Cuisine Institute in Hong Kong,
the Culinary Institute of America, and the University of San Francisco. He founded the
Yan Can International Cooking School in 1985 and has two restaurants, Yan Can and
SensAsian.

Program: The Fairytale Castles of King Ludwig II with Dan Cruickshank Focus: History, Creative Writing Grades: 6–12 Airing: Wednesday, September 2 at 7 p.m.
Overview: King Ludwig II of Bavaria spent his life in pursuit of the ideal of beauty, and
many believe his castles were the work of an architectural genius ahead of his time. This
program explores the rich aesthetic of Ludwig II to discover if they hold the key to the
eternal enigma of this intriguing royal.
Free Additional Resources: PBS LearningMedia provides images of King Ludwig’s
castles, such as Neuscwanstein and Herrenchiemsee. Students might choose one and write
a creative story about life inside.
SCIENCE
While WYCC is the place to see and hear musical

Program: Carpe Diem: A Fishy Tale Focus: Invasive Species Grades: 6–12 Airing: Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m.
Overview: Introduced to American fish ponds in the 1970s to clean up algae, the Asian carp eventually
made its way into the Mississippi River system. Viewers go into the heart of the battle to curtail this
ecologically devastating invasion.
Free Additional Resources: Another fish wreaking havoc on its ecosystem is the Indo-Pacific lionfish,
invading the Atlantic and Caribbean with catastrophic results. This non-native species has no local
predators and is propagating at a rate that adversely impacts the coral reef habitats of the Eastern United
States, Caribbean, and South America. Students may watch the “Invasion of the Alien Fish” video and
compare and contrast the issues encountered. Other support materials, including discussion guides, are
available at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Middle schoolers may use the reef-to-ocean
food chain invasion activity.
