GERMANIA BLUE & WHITE SOCCER CLUB
During the mid-season break the soccer club had its annual soccer club Christmas party. It was a
perfect time to get together for a great meal (thanks Gerhardt and Robin!) and reflect on the year’s
activities and achievements. We honored the State Cup Champion Over 30 team and also honored
50-year soccer member John Jorgensen. Considering that the soccer club is now 54 years old, having
50 years active involvement is quite an achievement! Congratulations John.
All three soccer teams are in the hunt for the 2012 state cup. The Over 30, Over 40, and Open teams have all won
their state cup qualifying games up to this point. Check the game schedule posted on the Germania bulletin board
and come out to watch the games.
The soccer club had its annual elections in January and the board is set; contact any soccer board member for soccer

50 Again! JOE ULRICH was surprised at Germania with a celebration of his 50th Birthday just
days before his 51st Birthday. So, to explain...a snowstorm cancelled his 50th birthday party in
January 2011, but we made up for it on January 6th of this year during the Biergarten with a
super surprise enjoyed by all! There to celebrate with Joe were all his soccer buddies, the
former Old Timers, friends, family, and even George Zizvary, his former coach at Ulster
County Community College. Happy Birthday, Joe, and many, many more to come!

BUILDING & GROUNDS: If you are handy around the house and yard at home, or have experience in carpentry,
HVAC, plumbing or electrical, then you are the perfect buildings and grounds volunteer for Germania! Any volunteers
should come to any weekly Wednesday night committee meeting at 7 P.M., or contact Committee Chairperson Chris
Blatz by phone at (845) 702-7383 or email at itariussage@hotmail.com
Projects that require volunteers (or donated funds or supplies) include snow removal, cleanup in basement, building
storage cages for basement, building a shed for the Pavilion, painting the recycle bin, painting the main hall and installing
a chair rail, winterizing the pavilion, general repairs, and more. Items on our wish list include lumber, snow shovels (we
own a snow blower), chicken wire, plastic storage bins and paint; gift card donations are a great idea too.
CHRISTKINDLMARKT NEWS by Janett Frank
Our first one and only outdoor Christkindlmarkt was held this past December 2nd and 3rd at our Festival Grounds
under the pavilion. How fortunate for us that we didn’t have snow. However, we certainly didn’t escape the cold.
On behalf of my co-chairlady, Helga Nowak-Razey and our entire committee, I wish to thank each and every
volunteer who either worked in the pavilion or in the Germania kitchen, baking, packaging the baked goods, printing
the necessary labels, cooking, washing pots & pans, setting up, breaking down, selling the food, bakery items and
Gluhwein, and waitressing. Without all your help (you all know who you are) it would not have been the success
that it was. I especially like to thank my co-chair who did such a wonderful job decorating the pavilon and setting
everything up with her crew of volunteers and teaching all of the lady bakers how to make those wonderful
Christmas Cookies. We look forward to this coming Christkindlmarkt and we have already taken the steps to avoid
holding it on the same day as our Annual Christmas Party! Hoping to see all of you there.
FRÜHLINGSGALA
Dear Germania members and friends: The planning committee has been hard at word to present the program
for our Annual Spring Gala. Please examine the enclosed Program and submit your reservations at your earliest
convenience. Invite your friends to join us at this festive occasion. Please note the different prices at different
time lines. We hope to see you on April 21, 2012!!!! Helga Baker for the Gala Committee

CHORAL CORNER (News from the Germania Men & Ladies Singers)
The Singers had a busy December. We sang Christmas carols to six members who are
homebound, also at a private party at Germania and a special request to sing at two memorial
services.
We also sang special Christmas music sung at the Weihnachtmesse at the First Lutheran
Church with our Kinderchor. It was very well attended with great reviews. Good fellowship afterwards with cake
and coffee supplied by the church ladies. This service unites Germania and her daughter clubs
(The singers, dancers, soccer and Stueben). It was a wonderful way to end the year.
Next we will be singing in the Center Court of the Galleria Mall on President's Weekend
(Saturday, February 11th). Germania will be selling baked goods from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We
will be singing three sets beginning at noon (followed by the dancers). Look forward to seeing you.
The weekend of June 8, 9 and 10, 2012 the Singers will be hosting the Sängerfest here at Germania. On Friday night
June 8th we will be having a Mass Chorus Concert at Arlington Middle School auditorium at 7 p.m. on Route 44.
Admission will be $10 per person. The choruses are from Kingston, Binghamton, Utica, Buffalo and Syracuse. Our
Kinderchor will do the National Anthems. On Saturday morning June 9 th you are welcome to listen to the individual
clubs do prize singing from 9 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. Thanking you in advance for your support.
Wishing you a healthy and prosperous 2012!
GERMANIA KINDERCHOR By Frau Helga Baker
The voices of the Kinderchor added greatly to the festive German
Weihnachtsgottesdienst at the First Lutheran Church on Dec.18th,
2011. Afterwards they entertained the churchgoers with joyous
German Christmas carols during the get together with delicious baked
goods, coffee and tea. The Service and Social were well attended.
The children have started practice again and are brushing up on their
repertoire for the German Heritage Festival in February at the Galleria.
We still practice on Saturdays from 10 to 11 AM. New singers are
always welcome. Please call me for further information.

Germania Men & Ladies Singers will be the hosts of the 2012 Sängerfest on June 8, 9 & 10, 2012.
Sängerfest is a triennial statewide competitive singing festival comprised of three days of concerts, dances, and
competitive choral singing events. The Singers are looking for Germania to partner with them in promoting and fostering
a love for the German heritage through music and song, and for the Board, Daughter Clubs and general members to
support the event by being available to volunteer throughout the weekend and do all we can to give the visiting choral
groups a wonderful and memorable experience. Please help us take the first step to ensure that the Sängerfest will be a
successful endeavor by marking the dates in your 2012 calendar.

SUNSHINE NEWS by Janett Frank
Word was received at our annual Christmas Party on December 3 rd of the passing of our 47-year member, EDWIN
BAUER. Ed was a trustee in 1992-1993 and Financial Secretary 1993 and 1994. Look for a special article on Ed within
this newsletter. Our sincere condolences go to Marion and all his extended family.
Ed’s death was followed by the death of longtime member of 55 years, KARL SEITZ on December 19th, 2011 at 91 years
of age. Karl had been dividing his time between the residences of his two children: his daughter, 32-year member
Anneliese Seitz Mund, her husband Douglas and grandchildren, Hillary and Christian in Groveland, Massachusetts, and
also with his son, Wolfie (Karl) and his wife Nancy in Hilton Head Island, SC. Karl was also the grandfather of Wolf and
Nancy’s children, Emily Pertnoy and Kristin Newman and the great-grandfather of four great-grandsons. Karl was an
avid skier and dancer, who could be found tripping the light fantastic with all his dancing partners at our Saturday evening
affairs. He will always be remembered, especially with the then younger members of Germania, whom he taught how to
ski and sail with his family. Our sincerest condolences go to all of the Seitz family members.
Word was received of the passing of SONJA E. CLINE, 49, of Poughkeepsie on January 3, 2012 of Leukemia. Sonja was
the daughter of 34-year member and past singer, Matilda Morgenroth of Northport, Florida. Sonja was mother of Erica
and Brendan Cline and the sister of Linda Chianese and brother, Jay Morgenroth. Our hearts go out to her family but
especially to her mother Matilda. We are so sorry for your lost.
A Past President of the Kingston Maenner and Damenchor, KLAUS ANKELE, 84, also passed away on January 3rd in
Kingston. Klaus leaves his wife, Mina, two daughters and three grandchildren. Klaus was one of the original members of
The Hudson Valley Tyrolean’s, the first Schuhplattler group formed in the mid 50’s and active through the mid 60’s.
Klaus had recently paid a couple of visits to Germania in the past year or two. Our condolences go to his family.
ELSE I. BEUMER, 89, died January 6, 2012 at Victory Lake Nursing Center in Hyde Park. Born in Schwelm, Germany
on January 14, 1922, Else emigrated to America in 1950 along with an infant daughter and her husband, Karl, who
predeceased her on March 10, 2011. She and Karl spent many happy hours with colleagues at Germania Hall in
Poughkeepsie. Our condolences to her daughter Christine Beumer of New York City and her daughter and son-in-law
Karen Beumer-Browner and Michael Browner.
It was good to see TED WAGNER, well on the way to recovery from his most recent surgery, at the Annual Steuben
Meeting this month. We also learned at that time that WERNER GROSS was in the hospital and expecting to be released
shortly. Another Steubenite, and Germania Board Trustee, ANNELIESE RUH-KREIG was scheduled to undergo surgery
on January 10th and is now recovering at home; best wishes go out to you Anneliese for a speedy recovery. I was also
notified during the first week of January that DORIS GLUSENKAMP was seriously ill in the hospital with a rare bacterial
infection; even though Doris is no longer a member she still comes to quite a few of our affairs as a guest of several
members and you usually can find her dancing 99% of the time. Member TAMMY MAIER recently underwent
reconstruction of her leg during a 7-hour surgery and 5-hour recovery in ICU in a major New York City hospital; she is
now on the mend and will be in recovery for many months (You may send cards to her at 2 Horseshoe Drive,
Poughkeepsie, NY 12603); we wish you well Tammy. We wish all of you well, and hope you have complete recovery
from your surgeries/illnesses.
Ending this report on an upbeat, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! to Mr. OSKAR FINK a 54-year Honorary Member who will
be celebrating his 97th Birthday on January 25, 2012. Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!!!
ARE YOU IN THE TAX RAFFLE? More than $2,500 is raised with each tax raffle held which assists the club with paying the
land and school real property tax bills on our approximate 10-acre property. The more tickets each member buys, or sells,
results in less money being paid for the taxes out of the club’s operating account. Let’s set a goal together to increase the
amount we raised last year… if EVERY member bought or sold just two tickets we would raise $4,000+ with each tax raffle.
