Michael Condon (1915 - 2001) 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 31, 2016 Living God’s Word The Eucharist has been called the “bread of angels” (Psalm 78:25). It is a free gift from God. It is offered to give us eternal life because through it we receive the life of Christ, “the true bread from heaven” (John 6:32). Jesus promised that those who believe and eat it will hunger and thirst for nothing throughout all eternity. Pastor: Fr. Doan T. Pham Associates: Fr. Daniel M. Martinez Fr. By Cynthia Reyes In a large Latino family, it is not uncommon for the older children to financially help the family supersede their poverty level, in hopes for a better life for themselves. Which in my case, it was my eldest brother Gilbert and my sister Frances. The pair sacrificed and diligently worked, even forgoing their education in order to help the family economically, and to ensure that we would get an education. Consequently, after my father died, my mother knew she needed to get things in order before God called her home. My mother’s way of life was to save a nickel because she remembered the days that she had none. Mom always thought about having enough money for their burial. When the time came, not only did she have enough money for both funerals, as she also had enough to bury us all, and then some. Which brings me to the point of this story: my brother and sister inherited my parent’s home, which they sold and divided the profits. Believe it or not, escrow closed on the day my brother died. He was destined to have his eternal home in heaven, joining my father and mother. As our Gospel of Luke: 12:13-21, reminds us today, we must empty ourselves of possessions that are our obsessions. We must fully focus on what are the authentic treasures of life that are invaluable to God. God is calling us to embrace the care of others by what matters most: love, compassion, mercy, trust, kindness, forgiveness, and fidelity. These are the choices that matter to God and bring us our eternal life. The irony of my brother dying before enjoying the fruits of his labor, was so typical of his selflessness, that he died knowing that his wife who has Parkinson’s would be well taken care of. What better gift could my brother had received than to be rewarded with God’s eternal life! Keep your kids safe in the park this summer The weather outside is beautiful, and one of the best places to play is the park. However, parents should start every visit to the park with a discussion with their kids about safety plan. Kids should know what to do if a stranger were to approach them, and who to go to if they feel uncomfortable or threatened. Public parks are a great place to play, but they are exposed to the public. Having a safety plan in place can help parents and kids feel secure and play safely this summer. For a copy of the TODAY.com article, email jvienna@la-archdiocese.orgor call (213) 637. 7227.
