Education Program Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of Delaware 2008
Education Program
Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of Delaware
2008
The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation has made a few changes for 2008, in the hopes of
maximizing the utilization of the ship for educational purposes. Our first priority this spring
is to provide the maximum number of student sails while the ship is in Wilmington.
SPRING 2008
Wilmington Schedule
Ship and Shipyard tours:
January 15-18; 21-25; 28-Feb. 1
February 5-8; 12-15; 19-22; 26-29
March 4-7; 11-14; 18-21; 24-28
April 1-4; 8-11
Tour Cost: $5.00 for each student and parent chaperone
During this time the ship is down rigged and the
deck is covered with a plastic cover. Tours are still
conducted, but the ship is not fully rigged with all
its sails. The tour will include the main deck of the
ship, outside of the ship, sail loft/museum,
blacksmith shop, New Sweden museum, Swedish
games, & mechanical advantage block and tackle
demonstration. One of the advantages of a winter
tour is that the students get to watch maintenance
activities such as sail mending and rigging.

2008
Student Sails on the Christina River
While sailing the students receive an interactive
orientation to the ship, work with the crew,
participate in setting and dousing sails, learn
about period navigational instruments, observe
and utilize mechanical advantage devices such as
the capstan, windlass and whip staff, as well as
making observations about the Christina River’s
flora and fauna.
Ship Sails 1.5 hours:
Sailing times each day: 9:30-11:00 & 12:00-1:30
April 15-18; 22-25; 29-30
May 1-2; 6-9
Sail Cost: $15.00 for each student and parent chaperone. Capacity: 38 students and 11 chaperones
The shipyard, which includes the sail loft/museum, blacksmith shop, block and tackle
demonstration, and New Sweden Center, is available for tours when the ship is sailing. Large
groups (50-76) could divide their group in half, with one half sailing while the other half tour
the shipyard. After a lunch break, the two groups would switch places.
Combined sail/tour Cost: $20.00 for each student and parent chaperone.
Groups who might wish to tour just the shipyard can be accommodated as long as the tour
would not conflict with a sail and there were enough educator volunteers to handle the tour.
