MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
Hi Everyone,
Summer has arrived with
all the outdoor activities of
planting flowers, pulling
weeds, cutting grass and all
other festive outdoor activities
you and your family enjoy. Your
executive committee is trying
very hard to come up with
new ways to make everything
more enjoyable for all the
Campbellford members.
It has been difficult to get
everyone involved but we
need more suggestions on what
activities the members would
like to see. We will be more than
happy to approach and discuss
anything that anyone suggests.
Please realize there are no bad
4
suggestions as everyone has
great ideas.
As executive members we will
still very much try to come up
with ideas to make things more
enjoyable for everyone but we
need your help. We are very
proud of our monthly soup
and sandwich it has worked
out well and is bringing in a
profit for the club.
If anyone would like to help
with this event please do not
wait to be asked your help
whether it be small or large,
would be so much appreciated
in any way you would like to
participate.
Gerald Brunton
SM
MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY
I would like to welcome all new
members. It is nice to see new
faces and have our club grow.
We all need to do our part in
encouraging new people to join
our organization.
Our Soup and Sandwich
luncheons have proven to be a
successful venture. Thanks to
Dianne Parker for taking over
the role of convenor for this
worthwhile project.
Our Spring Fling was a success
with over 55 members and guests
I especially enjoyed young Mr.
Brunton who sang a solo. In my
opinion he has a singing career
ahead of him. The evening topped
off with music from Hal Allison.
Twenty door prizes were given
out. Cudos to the people who
set up for the event. Everything
looked wonderful.
YOUR 2013
EXECUTIVE
COMMITTEE
During one of our recent executive
meetings, we were discussing
ways of utilizing our building
more. Some ideas bounced around
were croconate, checkers, or
games of darts. If anyone has ideas
for games, please don’t hesitate to
bring them forward. If anonymity
is your game you can also put a
suggestion into the lock box just
inside the big room.
July 17 is our next pot luck
luncheon and general meeting. We
will be having Catherine Bateman
and Kevin Weaver as guest
speakers. Catherine is a spiritual
and sensitive interviewer, creative
writer, professional public speaker,
loss and grief educator, and an
endearing leader in her role. Kevin
is a very experienced facilitator,
creative writer, engaging public
speaker and ceremonial leader. A
Code of Ethics binds them both
to maintain confidentiality in
her work with individuals and
families.
We look forward to hearing what
they both have to offer.
Until next time,
Janice Rutherford, Secretary

SENIORS VULNERABLE TO SCAMS & ABUSE
Romance scams, money scams, identity theft & abuse . . .
it’s out there and seniors, who are often more vulnerable
than others, need to be wary.
“Seniors need to know what to
do to protect themselves,” said
Northumberland OPP Constable
Karen German, media relations
and community services officer.
Besides providing tips on
how to watch out for scams, she
works to help seniors protect
themselves in other ways.
She is a member of the
Northumberland Elder Abuse
Response Network (NEARN)
committee that works to
raise awareness of key issues
around abuse and neglect in
later life and to ensure that
older adults are treated with
respect and dignity.
“Are they being treated
properly? Are they being taken
advantage of for their finances?
Those are all areas of concern,”
she said.
Fraud and abuse are just two of
the areas she is concerned about.
“Seniors also need to know
when to when it is time to hang
up their driver’s license. There
comes a point when maybe it’s

a matter of pride where they
don’t want to, but they become
a hazard on the road to other
drivers . . . and to themselves,”
she said.
Ontario's senior population
is growing at a rapid rate. By
the year 2021, there will be as
many seniors living in Canada

One of Our Own
FRIENDS TRAVEL TO “RAMA” FOR
FUN AND EXCITEMENT
Winning at “Rama” might be a gamble but for Joan Seymour
& Lois Collins, the fun of the day’s outing is a sure bet.
Joan Seymour checks out the newsletter from “Rama” in Orillia. She
and her friend Lois Collins, have taken bus trip there every month for
more than 20 years for a fun-filled day at the slots with the chance of
winning and beating the odds. Her brightly coloured daubers on the
table show she likes to play bingo are area games. Sadly the bus service
to “Rama” no longer happens. But there is a shuttle to Kawartha
Downs so you never know – the ladies might not be done yet.
Photo: Sue Dickens
On the last Wednesday of each
month a Coach Canada bus
would arrive at the Canadian
Tire parking lot in Campbellford
at approximately 7:30 a.m. and
thus began their day of fun and
camaraderie.
8
Friends for a long time, this pair
of “young-at-heart” seniors have
been going to “Rama” in Orillia
for the past 20 years or more.
“I just enjoyed playing the
games. It’s the excitement of it,”
said Joan.
SM
The trip cost them $10 each and
the bus made stops in Hastings
and along the highways to
“Rama”.
“We were always treated very
well on the bus. They always had
good drivers,” said Joan. Each bus
would seat 54 people and it was
usually full. A stop at Coffee Time
near Peterborough was a welcome
start to the trip.
“We were also served cookies on
the bus going and coming home,”
said Joan.
The ladies who organized the
trips, Pat Robertson and Ella
Chamberlain, both of Hastings,
held three free draws of $20
going to “Rama” and coming
back home.
Upon arrival at “Rama”, about
10:30a.m., attendants would
let everyone know the time of
departure, then swipe a card
which gave everyone a free
dinner. “That usually gave us the
choice of three or four different
restaurants,” said Joan.
“We got to stay approximately
five hours and sometimes we
would go to the theatre,” she
added.
For Joan it was all about the fun.
She played the slots and limited
the amount of money she took.
Her strategy? “I would just go
to a machine and if it worked for
me within $20 I would stick with
it. If it didn’t I would move on,”
she said. “I would take $100 and
that’s it.”
Joan has won some and lost
some. “Over the years I’d say I
broke even,” she said with a grin.
And each trip was a win-win for
the local food banks. The balance
of the money collected from the
trip was divided among the food
banks in Campbellford, Hastings
and Warkworth.
“All in all we enjoyed our trips
and always looked forward to the
next time the bus left for “Rama”.
Sadly, the bus to “Rama” was
recently halted, but there is a free
shuttle to Kawartha Downs just
outside of Peterborough from
local communities so the ladies
might not be done with the slots
just yet.
Of course they still enjoy the
Campbellford Senior Citizen’s
Club events at the Forrest Dennis
Seniors Centre . . . particularly the
euchre games.

SCOOTERS PROVIDE
THE GIFT OF MOBILITY
Motorized Mobility Scooters
provide the gift of mobility. For
seniors particularly, mobility
can become a challenge and
affect quality of life.
Now there is a solution: Bill
Clark, owner of “Pacific Pure”,
is offering a way for folks
to combat mobility issues
by bringing Scooters to the
marketplace.
“NO GAS, NO LICENCE and
NO INSURANCE required,”
states Bill, who has sold
many of these scooters just
through word-of-mouth
recommendations.
You DO NOT have to be
elderly to use one.
These scooters are LEGAL
on sidewalks, NOT roadways.
These scooters have several
features, from the adjustable
seat and armrest to safety nonflip rear wheels, to the left and
right turn signals, warning
beep, storage, a security wheel
lock and a remote alarm.
“It even has an E-ABS braking
system”, states Bill.
The scooter can reach a speed
of 30 km/hour and travel 50
10
to 60 km before needing to
be recharged.
“The charging system plugs
into any household outlet,”
says Bill.
SM
This scooter is the answer
for many wanting to be
independent. Bill comments
that he hasn’t found a hill in
town that the scooter won’t
go up.
He has owned a number of
business in his lifetime and
is a successful entrepreneur.
Bill and his wife retired to
Campbellford 20 years ago,
where they operate “Linda’s
B&B at 152 Cockburn Street.
Selling scooters is his new
passion. The scooters are
available in silver, black or
red and can be delivered in
24 hours. The scooter is very
user friendly. A lot of things
on this scooter are not on a
standard mobility devise, like
the four wheelers.
This is the “Elite” of
scooters. Bill has a demo for
anyone to try, before they buy.

Celebrating 25 Years
of getting more.... for less!
Twenty-five years ago,
a young couple Gary and
Margaret-Ann Rowan,
together with their daughter
Heather, decided to embark
on an adventure by moving
to Campbellford and buying
a bulk food store.
They decided to rename it
Bulk Plus and complete a few
renovations, but keep the
30 Doxsee Ave. S. location.
As the name implies, Bulk
Plus is a bulk food store, but
also much more. They have
vitamins and supplements,
natural health and beauty
products, and have expanded
into the gluten-free market.
You can find supplies for
your baking and dietary needs,
including The No Grainer
Baker by employee and
author Ann Preston.
At Bulk Plus, we believe
that service is the key to a
successful business and are
always happy to try to order
in any products we don't
currently carry.
We invite everyone to help
us celebrate 25 wonderful
years. Be sure to watch for our
anniversary specials, contests,
etc. in August.
