TERRITORY OF NEW 61UINEA. No. 3 of 1622-1933. AN OItllINANCE Relating to Currency Coinage and Tokens. BE it ordained by the Governor - General of the Commonwealth of Australia, with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, and in pursuance of the powers conferred by the New guinea Act 1920, as follows :-- 1. This Ordinance may be cited as Othe Currency Coinage and snort Wie. Tokens Ordinance 1922. 2. The Ordinances mentioned in the Schedule hereto are hereby Repeal. repealed. 3. In this Ordinance, unless the contrary intention appears' Definition. " AdMinistration " Means the Admïnistratkin or GÖVernrnent of the Territory. 4. (1.) Save as hereinafter provided, any person in the Territory German ge ito f e t d who makes use of or tenders or accepts or exchanges in the course of notthe Territory. business or for any-purpose whatsoever, any banknote or other paper - in money issued by a German bank or any German currency or coinage of any nature whatsoever, shall be gúilty of an offence. Any- native may pay to the Administration in silver -quarks or other German coins any sums due by way of-fees, taxes, or -otherwise, and such coins. may be accepted by the Administration at such rate of exchange as the Administrator from -time to time authorizes. . Payment ot sums expressed hi marks. 5. A:l.ldebts and moneys, due under a contract or otherwise, exprèssed in marks or fractions thereof, shall be regarded as if expressed in the same number of Aillings or fractions thereof, and payment of such debts and moneys may be made in notes of the Commonwealth : of Australia or in any coins which are legal tender in the Commonwealth of Australia. Any person who accepts any token or counter in the course of trade or in lieu of the payment or part payment in legal tender of moneys due to him as wages or otherwise, shall be guilty Of an offence. Any religious or charitable body operating in the Territory, whose principal object is religious or secular education, may be exempted by the Administrator from the provisions of this section if he is satisfied that such body does not carry on a commercial or trading business or that its commercial or trading business is small in proportion to its other activities. (4.) Any exemption granted by the Administrator in pursuance of the last preceding sub - section shall be notified in the New Guinea Gazette._ Exceptions to the application the Coinage Act 1909. 7. --(1.) In the application of the Coinage Act 1909 to the Territory, section seven of that Act shall not be deemed to apply to any transaction or dealing ; between natives. (2.) In that part of the coast of New Britain lying between Cape Merkus and Cape Dampier and in the hinterland adjoining that coast, the shell known as gold -lip (Meleagrina margaretifera) may be used by any person at the rate of twelve shillings a pair in place of legal tender for any purpose except for the purchase, sale, barter or exchange of Trocas shell. E it ordained by the Governor- General of the Commonwealth of K JO Australia,, with the _advice of the Federal Executive Council, in pursuance of the powers conferred by the Neuz guinea Act 1920, as follows : 1. --(1.) This Ordinance may be cited as the Natives' Contracts shorb title and citation. Protection Ordinance. 1922. (2.) The Natives' Contracts Protection Ordinance 1921 is, in this Ordinance, referred to as the Principal Ordinance. (3.) The Principal Ordinance, as amended by this Ordinance, may be cited as the Natives' Contracts Protection Ordinance 1921-1922. 2. Section three of the Principal Ordinance is amended by s. inserting the following new sub- section M ó of 1921. áói " C (3) all other contracts the consideration for which either in money or goods exceeds Twenty pounds in value." 3. Section five of the Principal Ordinance is amended by omitting Amendment ó from sub - section (1) the word " four " and inserting in its stead the 19x , word " three." Examination, No. 1080. FOR APPOINTMENT AS SORTER (FEMALE), DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY, NEW SOUTH WALES. Held 1st July, 1922. THE candidates named hereunder were successful at the above Examination, having obtained at least half marks in each subject. The following information should be noted : (1) Where two or more candidates secure the same number of marks, their order of merit is determined by the number of marks obtained for (a) Arithmetic, and (b) Handwriting, and, where these numbers are also equal, then by ballot.
