To the delight of arts and literature enthusiasts, literature will be honoured once again in 2016. This past November, for the 26th year, the Ville de Sherbrooke invited writers to participate in the Grand Prix du livre. This biennial event highlights works by exceptional Sherbrooke writers, which stand out because of their originality, their artistic value, and their quality of expression. Writers have until July 1, 2016 to submit their works in one of the two following categories: creative writing or essay. The award for the creative writing category recognizes the excellence of a work for adult readers, in the form of a story, a novel of any kind, a poem, a play, or a novella. The award for the essay section recognizes the excellence of a work written from a social science or humanities perspective, or a combination of the two categories. The Association des auteures et auteurs de l’Estrie (AAAE) is a member of the organizing committee and will contribute its expertise in literature to assist members of the jury in evaluating the works. All jury members are recognized professionals working in the field of literature (creative writing section) or in the social sciences, humanities, or other relevant fields (essay section). The winner of the Ville de Sherbrooke’s 2016 Grand Prix du livre in each of the two categories will win a prize of $4000. The finalist in second place in each of the two categories will receive a prize of $1300, and the finalist in third place in each of the two categories will receive a prize of $700. Works published between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2016 will be eligible. The literary awards will be presented in fall 2016. Publishers and authors are invited to consult the contest rules on our Web site: sherbrooke.ca/gpdl. Submissions must be sent by July 1, 2016 to the following address: Grand Prix du livre de la Ville de Sherbrooke, Division de la culture, Ville de Sherbrooke, P.O. Box 610, Sherbrooke QC J1H 5H9.
