A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Brambleton Goes Back to School
Back-to-School is a great time of year,
regardless of what some of the kids
may think. It is a time of new beginnings that will bring some sense of
structure and regularity back to most
everyone. This will be necessary to
keep up with all the commitments,
challenges, and activities that come
along with end of summer and the
start of a new school year.

had our busiest summer ever, but
all that summer fun - the events, the
camps, the pools - must come to an
end. While the summer fun is ending, there still are several activities
scheduled for the fall, and the planning for next year is already underway. Our staff members are back from
summer vacations and are focused
on the drafting of the 2016 budget.

with finding ways to grow their ser-

school, there comes a renewed push
for traffic and school safety awareness in and around the community
and schools. Children will be walking
to schools en masse during morning
rush hour, buses will be on the roads
stopping traffic to pick up children,
drop-off and pick-up lines will form
on streets adjacent to the schools,
and school zone speed limits will
be in effect. It is imperative that all
drivers remain alert and cautious
when driving around the schools and
throughout the community. Please
drive safely, always!
Structure is a good thing. I personally
look forward to school starting back
up this fall. This is a big year for the
Stone household. I have two children
starting high school this year and one
in his last year at middle school. This
will be a challenging yet exciting year
for all of them. I look forward to the
challenges that the year will bring
and the continued growth and maturity that will hopefully result from
those challenges. I wish my children
and all the children of Brambleton
great success this school year. 

ASSOCIATION BUSINESS
BCA Board Members Wanted: Call
for Candidates
Rick Stone, PCAM, LSM - General Manager
The Association has two Board seats
opening up this fall and is placing a
Call for Candidates for residents that
are interested in running for a seat on
the BCA Board. While not required,
residents who have served on an association committee or other HOA
boards typically make great candidates for a board position. The two
board members being elected this
fall will both hold 3-year terms. The
Board regularly meets every even
month at 8:15 AM, with possible additional meetings to handle special Association business. These meetings
typically last no more than 2 hours.

Board Members can be found in the
Association’s governing documents.
If you have an interest in running for
the position, questions pertaining to
the position, or would like to obtain a
nominating petition or a copy of the
election guidelines, please contact

BCA Encourages Residents to Vote &
Get Involved
Rosemarie Linder, CMCA, AMS, PCAM - Director of Resident Services
General Elections will be held
throughout Virginia on November 3,
2015. The last day to register to vote
or update your address to be eligible
to vote in the General Election is October 13, 2015. Voting registration
services are available through Loudoun County, the DMV, and www.vote.
virginia.gov.
It’s important to know that Virginia
law now requires all voters to provide
an acceptable form of photo identification at the polls. Voters arriving
at the polls without a valid photo ID
will be required to vote a provisional
ballot. They will have until noon on
the Friday after the election to deliver a copy of one of the forms of

acceptable identification to their locality’s electoral board in order for
their provisional ballot to be counted.

Loudoun County provides an overview of races and candidates appearing on the ballot and general information regarding the election.
The Loudoun County Office of Elections is seeking Election Officials to
work at the polls on Election Day.
These officials ensure that every registered voter can exercise his or her
right to vote and that elections are
run in an honest and well-organized
manner. Officials are paid $145.00
for training and their participation on
Election Day. For more information,

There has been a steady increase in
the volume of applications for exterior modifications received by the Association over the past several years.
This is a direct result of the increase in
new home sales in Brambleton.
Committee needs to be able to successfully review the application and
render a decision in a timely manner.
For any application to be considered,
it must include all of the following information:
The applications received in 2015
have pertained mostly to permanent
structures such as fences, patios, and
decks. These types of modifications
have several specific guidelines that
must be considered when applying for them and getting estimates.
Therefore, it is very important that
the applications contain all the necessary information that the Covenants

Ask a Committee Member
We recently chatted with our newest Covenants Committee member, Chris Cook, to learn about his Brambleton
experience and his perspective on Committee membership.
Tell us a little bit about yourself….are you married, do you have kids, and how long have you lived in
Brambleton?
My name is Chris Cook, I've been married for eight years and have a 4 year old daughter. We have lived in
Brambleton since 2013 and enjoy everything that makes this community unique, from the special events to the
overall friendly "Norman Rockwell" neighborhood lifestyle!
How long have you been on the Covenants Committee?
I joined the Covenants Committee in June, 2014. I have enjoyed dedicating my time each month on the committee.
Is it what you expected as far as commitment and responsibility?
In my opinion, the Covenants Committee may demand a higher commitment and responsibility than other committees. In a growing community such as Brambleton, the number of applications to review each
month consistently is on the rise (some months we have upwards of
100+ applications to review in one night). This takes commitment that
brings high responsibility to ensure the established rules/guidelines
and covenants are upheld with every application reviewed.
How do you view staff ’s assistance and knowledge of guidelines
and rules?
The staff 's assistance and knowledge of the rules/guidelines are invaluable to us, as we would not be able to approve the number of applications that are received in a single month without their help and
expertise! The staff does an excellent job behind the scenes reviewing
the applications beforehand, working with the residents to ensure their
application is complete, and asking the right questions to residents to anticipate our questions during the committee review. With the work done by the staff, each application is thoroughly vetted, and a recommendation
can be made to the committee based on the rules/guidelines of the association. The committee relies heavily on
the staff reviewing the applications beforehand and values their input and knowledge of the rules/guidelines.
This process helps to expedite review of each application, addresses the specific rules in question, and allows
the committee to utilize their time efficiently to discuss whether an application should be approved.
What do you think your primary responsibility to residents is as a committee member?
My primary responsibility to residents, as a committee member, is to make sure the rules/guidelines are uniformly followed. Consistent application of the rules ensures Brambleton remains a unique community and preserves
the excellent quality of life residents expect. With that in mind, I also have a responsibility as a "Brambletonian"
to be available to neighbors who may have questions, and I am able to offer assistance through the knowledge
I have gained from my volunteer experience to answer those questions.

Checking in at The Little Free Library: Community Center
My name is Carla Sola, and I’m a 1986 graduate of Beloit College in Wisconsin. Several years ago I read about a Beloit grad who cofounded The
Little Free Library movement. They started by building small, handcrafted
structures, like large mailboxes, where people could leave and take books
on almost any topic and for any age. As an avid reader myself, I thought
these miniature “libraries” were a truly inspired way of engaging people
in their communities and encouraging a love of reading. I thought about
how much fun it would be to see one of those libraries posted along a
walking trail in Brambleton – and now here they are!
I have volunteered to be the librarian (takes me back to my high school job
after school working at our local library in Troy, Ohio) of the British Telephone Booth library
at the Community Center. It’s such a fun design and one that makes me think of everything
“British.” There are so many great British authors of every genre that I plan initially to stock the
library with both classics (for Dickens and Austen fans) and contemporary works (J.K. Rowling,
Mark Haddon, Hilary Mantel) – to name a few. For children there are also many great British
authors to choose from (Beatrix Potter, Roald Dahl, C.S. Lewis). And expect to see a few books
on hosting tea parties, if I can find them to share!
My hope is that Brambletonians will embrace the joy of reading and sharing and community
by respecting the libraries and using them for their intended purpose. I’m very excited to be
a part of this new venture in our wonderful neighborhood.

ASSOCIATION MAINTENANCE
Facilities & Grounds Spotlights
The pools are winding down for the
season; however, planning for next
year has already begun. Enhancements such as new pool furniture
for the Community Center pool and
shading for Stratford Landing pool
are just a couple of items being considered. What else do you feel is
needed at the pools? Let us know at
Pools@Brambleton.org
Brambleton Corner Clubhouse and
Bathhouse have taken a beating over
the last two pool seasons. Plans for
interior painting are being finalized.
You can look forward to a freshly
painted building by mid-autumn.
The high winds over the years have
loosened the fence posts at the Legacy Park Tennis Courts. The wind
screens on the fence have acted as
sails and have loosened the posts.
Staff is working to reset those posts.
Once set, the wind screens will not be
reinstalled, so that the life of the fence
is not negatively impacted.
The painting of existing faded fire
lanes on private BCA streets will occur in September. All BCA streets will
be inspected, and the worst ones will
be painted. Please let us know if you
feel your street is in need of paint at
HOA@Brambleton.org

Back to School Safety Reminders
With schools back in session, drivers
are reminded to take basic steps to
assure safe travel around the schools
and throughout our community.
•

The speed limit on all residential
streets in Brambleton is 25 mph,
unless there is a flashing School
Zone sign. Obey the posted
speed limit on the School Zone
sign when lights are flashing.
Stop for school buses when their
lights are flashing.
•
Watch for and obey crossing
guards.
•
Exercise additional caution when
traveling around schools, playgrounds, the Town Center, or
other active pedestrian zones

The B_Fit Trail Challenge, presented
by Fitness Image Results and Families
in Training, will be held on Saturday,
September 19, 2015 in Brambleton.
Timed waves will compete on approximately 2.5 miles of paved trails
including 11 fitness stations with a
range of strength and agility challenges along the way.
Registration Now Open! $27/person,

event benefit the pediatric cancer

Participants can opt to compete as a
team or individually. When you register, you will select a wave time based
on your approximate 1-mile pace.

Bram Kids Help Turn Our Trash Into
Another's Treasure

Upcycling. In case you haven’t heard,
all the cool kids are doing it. Just ask
the members of First Lego League
(FLL) team Robo Pros.
Comprised of six Loudoun County elementary school girls, Team #15704
Robo Pros develop their problem solving and engineering skills by building
and testing robots in an effort to provide solutions to everyday issues. And
while exercising their brains, they also
do community outreach as part of
their seasonal project. This season’s
theme is “Trash Trek,” which encompasses a wide range of environmental topics, including everything from
recycling, reuse, sustainable building
practices, and waste management to
water conservation.
One of the goals for Robo Pros this
season is to collect various materials
that can be recycled and ship them

to the waste solutions company, TerraCycle.
Founded in 2001, TerraCycle takes
these items and “upcycles” them. Upcycling a product involves using the
material exactly as it is without changing its basic structure. For example, to
upcycle a used potato chip bag, you
might fuse it together and incorporate it into a larger object. However, if
you were to melt it into another plastic shape or material, this would be
considered recycling, not upcycling.
By turning a single-use chip bag into
a tote bag or lunch sack, you are increasing its useful life cycle, thus "up"
cycling it. By sending waste to TerraCycle, the waste is not thrown into a
landfill or incinerated. Instead, new
products are made with the collected
garbage, reducing the need to extract
new materials from the planet and

subsequent environmental impact.
Team Robo Pros recently held an
upcycling collection event here in
Brambleton. Organized by resident
Sushma Bangarbale, the team collected several items for shipment to
TerraCycle. Some of the most sought
after items were shoes, which will be
sent to developing countries for reuse. They also collected old pens and
plastic bottles and caps, which will be
repurposed as well.

Fall Yard Maintenance Tips

Fall is right around the corner, and now is the time to think about preparing your lawn for the changing season ahead and also for the coming spring. The Home Improvement Web advises of the below tips to help
your lawn this fall season so you can enjoy its rewards in the spring.
•
Rake those leaves. Once the snow arrives, an un-raked layer of leaves can get matted down over the turf
and smother it all winter long. Raking or using a mulching mower in the fall helps avoid dead patches
in the spring.
•
Feed the grass. Fertilizing in the fall is like a day at the spa for your lawn. Using a slow-release fertilizer
allows the grass to soak up nutrients and - just as important - spend the cool days and nights of autumn
recovering from summer heat and stress.
•
Weed all about it. Weeding in the fall is probably the most valuable thing you can do to prepare for
spring, and it's one that many people overlook.
•
Pick up pet waste. When the snow melts next spring, the last thing you want to see on your lawn is pet
waste. Fall is the perfect time to get out there and clean up Rover's little leftovers.
•
Remove thatch build-up. A build-up of above-ground roots called thatch prevents sunlight, oxygen, and
moisture from getting to the nutrient-hungry soil below. It's easy to remove, especially if you don't wait
until it overwhelms the yard. Just go at the yard with a dethatching rake in early fall. Or for an easier but
more expensive option, rent a power dethatcher.
•
Aerate. Heavy use throughout the summer can cause soil to become compacted. Perforating your lawn
with small holes helps reduce compaction and allows water, air, and fertilizer to get down to the soil,
which strengthens the grass’s root structure. For smaller yards, a manual aerating tool that removes

Water trees and shrubs. Dehydration during the colder months is an all too common cause of tree damage, but it can be easily prevented. To sustain them over the long winter, it's important to give trees
a drink before putting them to bed. After they go fully dormant, but before the ground freezes, use a
soaker hose or root irrigator to water them thoroughly.
•
Plant spring bulbs, trees and shrubs. Fall is not all about closing up shop. But pay attention to the
weather; planting bulbs too early can cause them to sprout before winter, and planting them too late
can mean their roots don't have enough time to develop before the ground freezes. Planting trees and
shrubs in the fall enables the root systems to grow before the hot summer returns. September through
November is the ideal time for tree planting because it allows the roots to become established before
the ground freezes and winter sets in. The Association recommends that tree advice requests be directed to the Loudoun County Urban Forester/Arborist. They serve as a resource to the county for forestry
or tree-related issues, in order to protect and enhance these resources for the general health, safety, and
well-being of the community.

Please place it in a dedicated and identified container/trash can, paper yard debris bags, or clear plastic
bags. Dark colored plastic bags are not accepted. The Brambleton Community Association office has free
Yard Waste stickers to place on your containers/trashcan.

Asthma: Signs, Symptoms, and When
to Go to the ER

In the Washington metro area,
about 8 percent of the population
is affected by asthma.
Christopher Crowell, MD, is the Medical Director at
StoneSpring Emergency Center and a board certified
emergency physician. Dr. Crowell has been with the
StoneSpring Emergency Center since it’s opening in
September of 2013.
Did you know that asthma attacks
are responsible for 2 million emergency room visits each year? And
in the spring asthma sufferers must
be especially diligent with more
triggers prevalent during this time
of year. By using your asthma medicines as directed by your doctor,
and identifying your warning signs
of a possible attack, you can help
manage your asthma and prevent
trips to the ER.
Asthma is a chronic disease affecting airways in the lungs that makes
breathing difficult. Symptoms include:
•
a persistent cough
•
shortness of breath or wheezing
•
tightness in the chest
•
feeling tired or unable to do
daily activities

The best way to manage asthma is
to have an asthma action plan. This
is a form you fill out with your primary care provider or pulmonologist (lung specialist) that describes
what medicines you need to take,
and when, to keep you feeling well.
You can see a sample plan at the
National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s website, nhlbi.nih.gov, by
searching “asthma action plan.”
An asthma attack happens when
symptoms progress and breathing becomes more difficult. This
occurs as a result of increasing inflammation and constriction of the
airways of the lung. In most cases
this is a gradual process that begins with milder symptoms that
precede that actual asthma attack.
Without proper treatment, they
can progress.
It’s extremely important to learn
about the disease, including being aware of your or your child’s
specific triggers and warning signs.
Some asthma attacks can be set off
by exposure to air pollution; tobacco smoke; allergens like dust mites,
pollen, mold or pet dander; or infections like colds and flu.

There are things you can do to reduce your chance of having an
asthma attack. For example, if you
know that dust is one of your triggers, you can wear a mask while
vacuuming, or remove carpeting
from your home. If tobacco smoke
is one of your triggers, do not allow
smoking in your home or in your
car.
Warning signs of an asthma attack
can include a cough or puffy eyes,
or you may not be able to exercise
as well. This is when you really want
to intervene with quick-acting
medications. Often, this is enough
to prevent more serious attacks.
If you do use your medicines and
the symptoms continue to get
worse, or if you experience any of
the following serious symptoms, go
directly to your nearest emergency
room:
•
rapid breathing
•
difficulty speaking full sentences
•
lips turning blue
Some people think that the medicines provided in the ER through a
nebulizer are better than their inhalers. Actually, inhalers can be just
as effective --- as long as you use
them correctly. Ask your primary
care provider or pulmonologist for
directions, or visit the Centers for
Disease Control’s website at cdc.

see a demonstration. 
