It also requires a coordinated effort between the residents, Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Office, and the Association. Only you and your neighbors know best what the “normal” conditions are in your neighborhood. Working together with a “See Something, Say Something” approach will send a message that Brambleton is no place for the criminals to set up shop. The Association takes community safety and security very seriously. I believe Brambleton has set the standards for community safety and security. Over the last several years, the Association has worked with the Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Office (LCSO), its residents, and contractors to build its safety and security program through the establishment of a safety and security committee and Neighborhood Watch program. As part of this program, the Association has provided space to the LCSO for its Community Policing office, hired a private security patrol company, installed cameras at all of its facilities, and purchased and deployed a radar trailer within the community. These steps taken by the Association are unlike those taken by any other associations in our region. I am proud of what we as a community have accomplished and remain dedicated and committed to the continued improvement of the Association’s safety and security program. Neighborhood Watch (NW) is an es- sential component of our community’s safety and security program. The idea behind the NW program is that every resident within the community should remain aware of his or her surroundings and the normal conditions on their street or within the neighborhood. When you notice activity or conditions that are unusual or suspicious, immediately report those actions to the LCSO non-emergency number (703-777-1021). When suspicious activities are reported, LCSO will dispatch a deputy to investigate the concern. You can do this anonymously if preferred. It is much better to report a suspicious activity that ends up being nothing than fail to report a possible criminal act in progress. Don’t regret not reporting suspicious activity. See something, Say Something! Although the Association cannot directly enforce traffic laws on VDOT streets, we continually work with LCSO to address recurring issues within our community. This process has greatly improved since the Community Policing program was established in Brambleton. As a result of this program, residents and the Association have a deputy focused on interacting with the community, which has improved the presence and interaction of LCSO and the community. My primary concern for the program is that the one officer that is dedicated to Brambleton also covers several other communities. For this reason, the time he actually spends in Brambleton is minimal. From where I sit, the Community Policing program needs additional deputies in the Brambleton/Dulles South region. This will require additional new funding from the County. I am a believer that the program is effective, and additional resources are needed. If you have had a similar positive experience with Deputy Roy Ortutay or his recent replacement, Deputy Milton Castelle, please consider emailing your experience, along with a request for funding and staffing a second deputy in the Brambleton Community Policing office, to Sheriff Chapman and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors (Mike. Chapman@Loudoun.gov and BOS@ Loudoun.gov ). I see building and strengthening our community’s partnership with LCSO as important to maintaining the safety and security we all value. One of the ways we will continue to build on our successful relationship is by hosting the 2015 LCSO Child Safety Day on August 8th from 11am-4pm at the Brambleton Town Center. The day will provide children with the opportunity to check out the LCSO cruisers, motorcycles and other vehicles; the services they offer and much more. Plan on spending a couple hours at this worthwhile event right here at our Town Center. BCA will also be setting up a booth at this event with community safety and security information. Stop by and see me! Sincerely, Rick Stone PCAM, LSM General Manager 5 ASSOCIATION BUSINESS New Faces, New Technology at BCA Rick Stone, PCAM, LSM - General Manager Watching Your Speed: Brambleton's Radar Trailer Brambleton Community Association recently purchased and deployed a radar trailer that will be used throughout the community to bring awareness to traffic related issues. The trailer has the capability to display messages based on speed, record data, and capture photos. This information will be used by LCSO to determine problem areas within the community and assign patrol resources to those areas. Residents with traffic concerns can request the sign on their street through the BCA Website. Please visit the Safety & Security page on the website for further information and to request the sign by completing the online form. Disclaimer: BCA does not have the authority to enforce traffic laws on VDOT streets. The radar trailer is for awareness purposes only and has been permitted by VDOT, and is deployed in cooperation with Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Office. A New Face in the Office Please join BCA in welcoming Mar- 6 tha Rodenburg as our new Resident Services Administrator. As a 10 year resident of Brambleton, Martha is very familiar with the community and a terrific addition to our team. In her new role, she will serve as the first point of contact for most residents reaching out to the Association. Martha grew up in Richmond and moved to Loudoun County in the early 90s to become a Flight Attendant for United Airlines. After deciding that the glamour of air travel wasn’t what they showed in the commercials, she switched to the glamour of administration. Martha’s hobbies have included needlepoint, tennis, and reading. She now has a halfway done throw pillow, bad knees, and has found a wonderful book club that doesn’t make you read the book. Put Brambleton in Your Pocket: We've Gone Mobile! Since we are always looking for new ways to connect with current and future Brambleton residents, we have developed a new custom mobile app. The app offers Brambleton Community Association Newsletter August 2015 access to the same popular features available on our website at www. brambletonhoa.com, including Submit a Request and self-subscription to BCA communications via Notify Me. You can also use the app to get the latest news and events information, take a virtual tour of Brambleton’s community facilities and submit a request to rent a facility, or get details on Brambleton’s Verizon FIOS package and contact information. For new residents, there is easy access to the New Resident Handbook and all of the information to help them get settled in; for residents selling their home, there’s a one-touch link to order Resale Disclosure Documents on the go. The app is available for download in the Apple App Store and on Google Play; just search for Brambleton Community Association. These tools are works in progress. Please share your comments and suggestions with us at hoa@brambleton.org. 7 COMMENTS ON COVENANTS Covenants Enforcement Elizabeth Stulga, CMCA - Design Review Manager The purpose of the Declaration is to establish a harmonious community. Because the prompt, efficient, fair, inexpensive and non-belligerent resolution of any disputes is desirable…from The Declaration for Brambleton Brambleton Community Association’s governing documents include the Declaration for Brambleton, where this language can be found. It is unique, and it creates the framework for the enforcement efforts of the Association. The Association is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the common areas, the amenities, and the administration and enforce- 8 ment of all covenants, including the Design Guidelines and those included in the Declaration. Brambleton’s property owners are automatically “members” of the Association, and in addition to all of the benefits of membership, they are obligated to abide by the rules and regulations. In circumstances where residents, or their property, are found to be in violation of these requirements, the Association’s established due process begins. Appropriate notice is provided to the resident to advise them of the matter and request their attention to resolve. If the matter re- Brambleton Community Association Newsletter August 2015 mains unresolved, an opportunity for a hearing with the Covenants Committee will be provided. Brambleton’s Covenants Committee has authority to take enforcement actions which may include, but are not limited to, the suspension of use privileges of the recreation facilities and other common areas, removal of voting rights, and assessment of monetary charges. If anyone has questions regarding due process, the enforcement procedures, or the covenants committee, please contact the Association (703) 542-6263 or visit our website. Landscape Borders The design guidelines for landscape borders were revised by the Covenants Committee in December 2014. Landscape borders no longer require an application before installation if they comply with the following guidelines: 1. Borders must be constructed of natural stone or brick. The use of concrete is prohibited. 2. The use of landscaping timbers is restricted to the rear yard. 3. Black plastic borders are allowed if they do not exceed grass height. 4. They must be keeping in size and scale of the existing landscaping bed. Maintenance requirements and future considerations: Walls/Borders for landscaping beds and associated elements must be maintained in keeping with Brambleton Community Association’s Property Maintenance Standards. They must be kept in a neat and orderly fashion, and must be trimmed and edged around during the growing season. This July, Brambleton implemented its highly anticipated Little Free Library program. An international program that was orgininally started in 2009 in Hudson, Wisconsin, it now boasts over 25,000 registered Libraries around the world. Throughout the entire Brambleton community, several small, kiosk-style “libraries” have been installed in high foot-traffic areas. Some look like birdhouses. One even looks like a phone booth. But they all have one thing in common: They’ve got books, and nothing but books – for readers of all ages and genres. Ok, so the Library at the Garden Plots has seeds, too. Fun, right? And they’re yours to borrow whenever you want. Bringing the program to Brambleton was initiated by resident Abel Sussman, who got the idea from a friend in Chantilly who had started it in his neighborhood. When Abel brought the idea to the Association earlier this year, it was originally on a much smaller scale. “I liked the idea so much that I was very willing to build one myself and put it in the Morning Walk tot lot.” He suggested bringing it to Brambleton because of his enjoyment of reading and trading books with his friends and his belief that “importing a love of reading to children is always a good idea.” Brambleton’s Grounds & Facilities Committee embraced Abel’s suggestion and quickly determined that this could be, and should be, a community wide program. The Committee made a recommendation to Brambleton’s Board of Directors, and at their 10 February meeting, the Board acted to approve the program and the funds to purchase up to 6 lending stations. Shortly thereafter, BCA staff mapped out the initial locations, ordered the library structures, and began collecting donations of books. Working with Abel, a group of interested residents became committed Little Free Library librarians. Once the Little Free Library kits arrived, staff built and then began installing them throughout the community. Almost immediately, residents were at the ready to begin stocking, lending and borrowing! The Little Free Library program works on the honor system. If you want a book, you take a book. If you take a book, you return it when you’re done. Or if you’re feeling really generous, bring a book to swap in its place! So the next time you’re cleaning out your bookshelves or closets, please feel free to drop your used books to the HOA office. Our librarians, or “curators,” will take over from there and distribute them to the various kiosks throughout Brambleton. It’s just that easy! Abel explained that loss from theft and damage from weather will always be concerns. “We kind of expect the books to disappear. Such is the nature, and that’s why we’re using the donation system. As people’s kids grow up and retire some of their books, or if someone’s moving and they need to get rid of their own library,” people are always happy and eager to donate books. And at the end of the day, if someone takes a book and doesn’t return it, it’s still Brambleton Community Association Newsletter August 2015 being read and enjoyed by someone. That is, after all, the ultimate goal of the program. Even though the program was quietly launched a week ago, word has really spread. Plenty of folks have already taken home new books to enjoy, and we hope to be able to reach more people by expanding the program even further in the coming months. For more information about how to use the Little Free Libraries and what types of materials are accepted, visit our website or email us at programs@ brambleton.org. I have been a member of Boot Camp in Brambleton for about a year and a half. It is the first workout program I have really enjoyed and stuck with long-term. Within the first couple months of starting boot camp, I noticed that my training for long distance races was becoming easier because of the strength training involved. Within four months of starting Boot Camp, I was in the best shape I had been in since high school. One thing I love about Boot Camp is Jeff 's ability to adapt each workout to the level of fitness of each individual participant. Everyone in the class gets the best possible workout. Last year I found out I was pregnant and because of Jeff 's ability to personalize each workout, I was able to continue Boot Camp during my entire pregnancy (up until 39 weeks). As a result, I was able to have a FIT pregnancy. Jeff is so passionate about health and fitness and is personally invested in the goals of his Boot Campers. It is because of his passion that I have become more motivated and fit. 11 COMMITTEES & VOLUNTEERING Keep Loudoun Beautiful Focuses On Beaverdam Creek Reservoir Rick Stone, PCAM, LSM - General Manager The volunteers with Keep Loudoun Beautiful (KLB) have been serving Loudoun County communities since 1972, with their commitment to make a difference and impact the amount of litter on Loudoun’s roadways, waterways, and natural areas. So it’s cool! Humans of Brambleton: Dr. Zach Casagrande It’s a great place to live. We have lived in Loudoun since I completed my residency and started practicing. Brambleton is a great place to raise a family, there are tons of kids, and it’s a growing area still. And people care about their health and their kids’ health and teeth here. I also wanted somewhere that I could live close to the office and become part of the community….and the short commute doesn’t hurt! With three kids of my own I wanted to be home as much as I could. When I finished my residency in Richmond and came back home to Northern Virginia, Brambleton was really just a road and they were building the movie theater. I think we were the second tenant in the Town Center. Now obviously there’s a ton of stuff going on. We’re getting ready to expand the office again this fall and this time we’re adding something that I don’t think a medical or dental office has ever done before. It’s going to make the experience for patients that much better. This month we chatted with Dr. Zach Casagrande of NorthernVirginia Orthodontics about what it’s like to be the official orthodontist of the Capitals, Wizards and Mystics, how he gives back to the community, and why you should be having fun at the orthodontist. So, Northern Virginia Orthodontics (NVO) has just been named the “Official Orthodontist” of the Washington Capitals, Wizards and Mystics. What exactly does that mean? We’ve actually treated a bunch of the Caps, but none of the Wizards or Mystics yet, but we will be. [Ted] Leonsis owns the Verizon Center and the three teams and they have 450 employees, not including the players. Basically, we’ll be taking care of those employees, the players and their families. For the organization (Monumental Sports) they get their orthodontic work and we get that great exposure. Does this mean people can expect to see some professional athletes showing up at NVO sometime soon? Definitely, and we’ve seen some already. Not only in the office patientwise, but they’re giving us a lot of access, too. So at their most recent Capitals Fanfest, they let us go over with some staff and patients and What do you like about the area? And the rest is history. Since then NVO has made a great impact on the community. My wife and I are really active in the community. We do a ton of philanthropic and charity work, which I’m hugely passionate about. We’ve had three patients with pediatric cancer over the last five years that have succumbed to the disease. So we did a huge fundraiser for pediatric cancer where I bought a Jeep and parked it right in front of the Town Center for two months to raffle it off, which we called “Car For A Cure.” One hundred percent of the collections went to charity. Half went to Team Mathias, the pediatric cancer charity of a dear patient of mine, and half went to research at Children’s National in D.C. We ended up raising $158,000, just locally in the community, which was awesome! What drives that passion for you? Honestly, just helping people. When I see a patient, it’s for two years. And a family with three kids I’ll see for seven or eight years in a row. You get to know these families very well. Mathias Giordano was one of my favorite patients, super polite kid, always talking to everyone in the office, caring, kind, good looking, great smile, very athletic. And watching him go through his fight against cancer, I wanted to do whatever I could for the family and raising awareness. Orthodontics in general allows my team (NVO) and I the ability to change and better lives every day and also gives our office the means to do things like this for others. Our goal is to make a difference in as many lives and patients and families as possible. What made you want to be an orthodontist? When I realized college and baseball weren’t going to last forever, I started working in my dad’s best friend’s dental office during breaks from school. That’s when I got interested. In your third year of dental school you do all of these rotations to see all of the specialties, and that’s when I knew I wanted to do orthodontics. The main reason: the orthodontists seemed the happiest. How long before you get the Nats in your office? Oh man, that would be awesome. If they come calling, we’ll do it. Baseball’s the sport I played, it’s my son’s passion. We love all those guys. I’d say, to answer your question, give 17 it a couple of years. Once they see how well we treat the Caps and the Wizards and Mystics, they’ll be calling! • Town Center Tidbits www.brambleton.com/towncenter • bleton Single-Family Home = $664,477 www.brambleton.com This month's spotlight tenant is Papa Tony's Trattoria! Community Partners Doing Good: Little Smiles Over the last month, we at Little Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Costa Family Dentistry have been collecting toys for pediatric patients at Fairfax Hospital as part of GraysonGives, a campaign started by an awesome, local boy named Grayson, who suffers from Type 1 Diabetes. After spending time in the hospital himself, Grayson decided he wanted to hold a toy drive for the other cihldren in the hospital. He wanted to "help them not feel scared while they were there and not feeling well." Dr. Costa and his three kids recently went shopping to help us fulfill our promise to match all donations made by our patients (and to buy some extras for such a great cause!). We were so happy to be able to help spread some little SMILES! We walked away with a lot of great information that we wanted to share with you. Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) is comprised of two major components, Animal Shelter Operations and Animal Control Division. The Animal Shelter provides care for companion animals that have been surrendered by their owners or found stray in the County. The Animal Shelter also offers pets for adoption, community engagement, and volunteer opportunities. The Animal Control Division enforces state and local animal laws regarding reports of animal cruelty or welfare concerns by utilizing investigative and humane education practices. Animal Control Officers engage residents through animal welfare presentations to schools, HOA groups, and other community organizations. Additional information can also be found on their website at www.loudoun.gov/animals or Facebook.com/ loudounanimals. The Commonwealth of Virginia mandates that Loudoun County require all dogs four months of age and older to be licensed. In Loudoun County, dog licenses are issued concurrently with the rabies vaccination effective period for each individual dog. The county issues permanent tags to remain with the dog for its lifetime (replacement tags are available if needed). All dogs must have a license tag securely attached to a collar and worn whenever 26 the dog is off of the owner’s property. Failure to purchase a dog license is a Class IV Misdemeanor, which can carry up to a $250 fine. The good news is that you can pay for your dog license online. listed below by clicking here, or submit a request with the BCA by visiting http://www.brambletonhoa.com/requesttracker.aspx and selecting “Pet Concern.” • Feces Removal – reports of citizen not removing pet waste from any property (other than his own) • Dog running at large – reports of dog roaming off leash • Stray aggressive animal • Welfare concerns – report of concern for the welfare of animal in non-life threatening condition. • Dog or cat bite when the owner is known Why You Need a License for Your Dog • • A license tells everyone that your pet is not a homeless stray, and it can identify you as the owner should your pet be found running loose. Animal Control Officers will attempt to deliver your licensed dog to you immediately, skipping a trip to the animal shelter. • Dog licenses are required for entrance to many dog parks. • License fees support Animal Care & Control programs including: care and housing for approximately 3,000 stray and abandoned animals a year, investigations of animal neglect and cruelty, emergency rescue and response services for animals, adopting homeless pets to new families, and community education and outreach. • Your dog license is proof that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies. Animal Services officers are responsible for enforcing Virginia State laws and Loudoun County and town ordinances that pertain to animals. In addition, Animal Services officers are responsible for various other services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Services include: • Investigation of animal cruelty, neglect, abandonment, and fighting • Investigation of dog attacks to humans and domestic animals • Investigation of confinement of animals in vehicles Services Provided in the Community Loudoun County Animal Services strives to deliver accessible, convenient service to the Loudoun community. You may submit an online complaint for the following concerns Brambleton Community Association Newsletter August 2015 • Regulation and inspection of kennels and pet stores • Removal of stray dogs from streets and public areas • Response to wildlife that poses a threat or has had contact with a person or domestic animal • Technical animal rescues, such as ice and swift water rescue • Response to sick or injured companion animals • Assistance to police and fire-rescue personnel • Rabies vaccination and dog license enforcement Animal Control dispatchers can be reached at 703-777-0406 and remain available during business hours to receive those complaint types listed above and to answer any questions you may have. For emergency complaints after hours, please contact the Sheriff ’s Department at 703-777-1021. • C.A.R.E. Program Brambleton’s residents are subject to both the Loudoun County requirements and the Association’s policies, including Policy Resolution NO. 7 Pet Policies. ASSOCIATION MAINTENANCE Grounds & Maintenance: My First 60 Days at BCA Billy Massey, Facilities & Grounds Supervisor My first 60 days here in Brambleton have been exciting, welcoming, challenging, and, most notably, extremely busy! I was immediately embraced, and after only a few days, I felt like an integral part of the Brambleton team. My first week here, I hit the ground running, helping with our very successful first Brewfest, quickly followed by our annual Red, White, and Bram celebration, and our first Sizzlin’ Summer Concert. While that was my initial experience, my primary responsibilities involve the day to day operations of Brambleton’s facilities and grounds. On any one day I can be seen interacting with contractors performing repairs on one of our buildings, meeting with homeowners to discuss a reported work request, inspecting the pool facilities, or even getting a little dirty w h i l e performing repairs in our parks or common areas. This has certainly proven to be a very busy summer! I can truly say that I have learned a great deal in the short amount of time that I’ve been here, and I am having fun in the process. I greatly appreciate my co-workers and residents welcoming me and my family to the community. I look forward to taking on more responsibility and learning all of the ins and outs of the job and community. This will take time, as every day brings new challenges. I feel blessed to be a part of this team, and I and look forward to getting to know the community better. 27 @]Yl`]j?gkeYfFYe]\Gf]g^OYk`af_lgfaYfk k BEST REAL ESTATE AGENTS! 23362 Virginia Rose 42539 Mayflower Terrace 22647 Gray Falcon Square $675,000 $225,000 Rent: $2295 42499 Rockrose 22812 Edson SOLD SOLD Heather Gosman n Award-Winning Neighborhood d Realtor l ILoveThisHome.com P: 703-201-1891 E: heather@ilovethishome.com Ask Me About New Homes in Brambleton! When you get an infection, your immune system releases chemicals into your blood to fight the infection. In most cases, this response allows the infection to be neutralized and eliminated. However, in some cases the immune response can be severe, and the infected individual can develop sepsis. This inflammatory process can spread throughout the body, which can lead to blood clots and leaky blood vessels. This in turn can impair blood flow, which can damage the body’s organs by depriving them of nutrients and oxygen. In severe cases of sepsis, one or more organs fail; in the worst case, sepsis can lead o septic shock. If this happens, multiple organs may quickly fail, and a patient can die. While anyone can get sepsis, nfants and children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic diseases 34 are at higher risk because of their reduced ability to fight infection. Different types of infections can lead to sepsis, including infections of the skin, lungs, urinary tract, abdomen (such as appendicitis), or other parts of the body. The symptoms of sepsis can be subtle and are often missed or misdiagnosed. The Sepsis Alliance created a chart to remember the symptoms: * S – shivering, fever, or feeling very cold * E – extreme pain or discomfort * P – pale or discolored skin * S – sleepy, difficult to rouse, or confused * I – “I feel like I might die” * S – shortness of breath If you suspect sepsis, it is worth calling 911 or going to the emergency room. Diagnosis of sepsis is best done in an emergency room, and may require lab and radiology tests. Sepsis is usually treated through Brambleton Community Association Newsletter August 2015 intravenous fluids and antibiotics. In some cases, other drugs or treatments may be necessary. The good news is that many people who are treated promptly can recover completely. You can try to prevent sepsis the same ways you prevent against other infections: stay away from others who are ill; wash hands before eating, after playing or working outside, and after using the bathroom; and keep young infants who have not yet received their vaccinations away from crowds or anyone who is sick. If you are prescribed antibiotics, follow the directions and take all doses. Seek medical help if an illness doesn’t get better or if gets worse.
