BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 C O NTE N T 15th Anniversary Cambridge Awards Chinese New Year HMCA Notable Alumni BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 Bina Bangsa Celebrate 15th Years of Excellence “Time flies. It’s up to you to be the navigator.” Robert Orben Most people agree that time is valuable and needs to be managed wisely. Time is a precious commodity, once it’s gone, having it back is just a mere dream. The challenge for us human is how to make the most of our time, our year, our season. This challenge comes with a hope to never look back in regret wishing to repeat what can’t be repeated and to undo what’s already been done. As one of the founding members of BBS, it’s really an overwhelming experience to be able to witness how BBS has grown from time to time. From the very first year, until it is now entering its 15th year. I still remember how it all started. A group of people who share the same ambitions, passion, desires and goals. A group of people who eagerly aim to establishing an environment nurturing life-long learners, to provides an internationally recognised education in Indonesia so that children can benefit from a good education without leaving their loving family environment. My most sincere gratitude is also dedicated to every parent who has given their trust to BBS. Without your support, there might be no 15 anniversaries for BBS. In this occa- sion, I would also like to express my gratitude towards BBS’ local partners, ASD (Academic Supervision Division), principals, teachers, and staff, who were just recently joining our journey or the ones who have been here with us from the beginning. This wonderful celebration is infinitely God-given. Without His divine blessing there would be no Bina Bangsa at all. As we walk towards greater plans He has set for us in the upcoming years, we hope that our foundation will become stronger. Consequently, more solid both internally and externally under God’s direction. “Each moment of the year has its own beauty.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Pak Surya Subandi President Director Bina Bangsa School BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 Looking Back… Bina Bangsa School opened its doors to 87 students in 2001 in a rented building and a house. After 15 years, it has branched out to 6 campuses with 2 in Jakarta, 1 each in Bandung, Semarang, Malang, and Balikpapan. With over 3,500 students in its care, and thousands of alumni spread all over the world, BBS has made its mark on the academic world. All of these accomplishments and growth would have been a dream during the early years of the school. Though I came in 2004 when BBS PIK was still building its first classrooms in its current location, it was remarkable enough to find that BBS already had 3 working campuses in 3 years. It was always a point of pride that the school grew in such a phenomenal way in its second year, creating the need to open up a new building for the primary school in the Kebon Jeruk campus. From the 87 students that started off the previous year, the school found itself welcoming 1,100 students in an amazing growth spurt. This was proof enough that the school leaders, teachers, and founders knew what they were doing, earning the trust and respect of the parents and the academic community. In 2003, BBS Malang came into existence at the same time with BBS PIK in its start up campus at a Ruko in Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta. The Cambridge International Curriculum was adapted and upgrades both in teaching staff and facilities all came into play. In 2004, BBS PIK transferred to its current location today. Being part of the pioneer group of teachers, I personally saw how much effort and dedication was needed in order to build a school from the ground up. We were blessed with so many parents who trusted in the teachers and the system and eventually, bit by bit, the campus grew to what it is today. I still remember the many firsts we had. We had our first musicals, first combined sports day, first academic conventions, first Cambridge Brilliance awards, first ICAS awardees, and eventually after a few more years, we were constantly the top in many things across the region, in Indonesia, and even the world. In 2008, the Bandung and Semarang campuses opened up to less than a hundred students each. Now, both campuses have almost reached 10 times their initial enrollment. These campuses had their own share of Top in Indonesia awards in Cambridge, and became known either in the field of music and the arts, or in sports. In a short while, the students of these campuses gained their A*s in the IGCSEs and A levels, which is proof that the BBS system works. Now, after 15 years of existence, Bina Bangsa School stands tall among the K-12 educational institutions in Indonesia. It was not at all so rosy. There were many innovations, changes, trials, and hardships that came our way but through God’s ever provident grace, we were able to search for better ways to become the best that we can be. Congratulations to Bina Bangsa School for 15 years of excellence! As anyone who attended will confirm, the event was an amazing success and we are so proud of all of the students who were a part of the event. Nicole Nirmala Suryadi from Secondary 1, who performed in the amazing musical medley for the concert shared that the experience has been tiring and so stressful but so much fun as well. “I think that the KJ students and the PIK students are just such a good mesh as well. We have all gotten so close over the last few months of rehearsal. We’re going to miss each other a lot. It has been such an amazing experience.” Ma Li Lan (Lina) from Primary 4, who performed in the Chinese Primary choir as well as Emceeing the event shared that the matinee show was quite nerve-wrecking as she had to speak in front of “over a million people”, but the second show was much better. “My mother told me that I looked very con- fident and the Chinese choir dance was really nice. She especially enjoyed the fireworks during the gala show.” Lina was proud to have been selected as one of the emcees for the event. “The other emcees were really nice and we became good friends.” Ms Ida Vera E. Pagaduan from Kebon Jeruk Primary, who was one of the stage managers for the event shared that the concert started with auditions about a year ago and since then they have been brainstorming choreography, participating in team building activities, costume planning and rehearsing and rehearsing and rehearsing! “There were challenges behind all of those stages, but all that hard works paid off during the show. I personally found the experi- ence wonderful, especially watching the students share their talents. The students were more than blissful, some of them even cried after the show!” From an audience perspective the entire concert was incredible to watch. The students showcased an array of amazing talents from singing and dancing to conducting and emceeing in Chinese and it was all very impressive. The musical medley in particular stood out as it was so smoothly arranged and so entertaining to watch. It was lovely to see so many students working so well together and complementing each other to honour their school. Our programmes and qualifications have four stages: Cambridge Primary, Cambridge Secondary 1, Cambridge Secondary 2, and Cambridge Advanced. School can offer all stages of our International education programmes and qualification or choose just one or two stages for specific groups of learners. Each stage builds on the learners’ development in the previous stage. Cambridge programmes and qual- ification are flexible so that school can adapt and meet the needs of different learners. They are fully compatible with other curricula, enabling schools to build a curriculum that reflects their own value. At Cambridge, our philosophy is to teach learners how to apply what have they learnt – to enable them to become lifelong learners who are: - Confident in working with information and ideas, their own and those of others - Responsible for themselves, responsive to and respect for others - Reflective as learners, developing their ability to learn - Innovative and equipped for new and future challenges - Engaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference These attribute are consistent in “21st century skills” – a term widely used by educators and employers to describe the skills learners need to develop to be effective in today’s world. We support the development of these Cambridge learners attribute by: - Writing subject syllabuses that have educational aims and objectives designed to support the learner attributes - Supporting teachers to develop BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 their professional practice - Providing support materials that embed the develop of the learner attributes - Designing our assessments so that they access critical thinking and require students to demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the subject. - Designing specific syllabuses that engaged students in thinking beyond disciplinary boundaries, targeted specifically in developing collaboration, research skills, interdisciplinary understanding, presentation skills and creativity ie.g. Cambridge Global Perspectives qualification and Cambridge IGCSE Enterprise. Cambridge also provides the comprehensive support and recourses for both Cambridge learners and teachers. Outstanding Cambridge learners in Indonesia We are pleased to acknowledge the success all of students who passed Cambridge examinations during the June and November 2015 examination series. It gives us great pleasure to recognize the exceptional performance of those learners who have been awarded the highest mark in the subject. Our awards recognize outstanding performance in Indonesia, apart from our ‘Top in The World’ which acknowledge exceptional performance globally. We congratulate learners who have been recognize of ‘High Achievement’ based of outstanding performance in subjects which are not so widely taken in Indonesia We use strict criteria to calculate Cambridge awards. These criteria ensure the achievements we recognize are consistent across the world in all subjects and at all qualification level. Learners receive awards if they have attained the highest marks in a subject, providing that they have achieved the minimum grade and standard mark for that award category. Jennifer Wu整理 BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 Harvard Model Congress Asia 2016 Seoul National University HMCA registration started as early as August. After having the confirmation of the number of students; sixteen students, BBS KJ proceed with registration of the event. BBS KJ also made arrangements with Jatra tour to help facilitate the trip to Seoul, Korea. A few weeks after registration, students were assigned by HMCA for delegated roles. For future improvement, it was suggested; to limit the students only to international committees/delegates. Domestic assignment maybe a little irrelevant for the students since it is using a very American system. Prior to the event, students were put into the Debate Club for preparation. They were asked to do some research for the topic given to each delegates. By HMCA, each delegate was given two articles, each with 10-20 pages worth of reading. For further reading, each delegate was assigned to research more on the topics by the Debate Club coach, Ms. Hannia. During the event, students were grouped into separate locations according to their committees. They were able to collaborate, discuss, debate, and learn from other students from different schools, and from the chair leaders from HMCA. The students admitted that they have learnt so much from this event. - They realised that caucus discussions/debates are really extensive. - They understood more about current affairs in relation to ASEAN, G20, etc. - Majority of our students were interested to come back for this event again. - For future preparation, these students agreed to help prepare even their juniors for the technicalities and research topics. Aside from the HMCA event, the students were able to visit KAIST University, one of the leading Universities in Korea in Science and Technology. KAIST offers full scholarships for overseas students, such as BBS students, with minimum 3A* results. On top of that, students had a chance to visit sites in Seoul, as part of their cultural and fun learning. They visited the Palace, Building 63 (a new skyscraper in Seoul), night market in Myeongdong and Gangnam. While there were slight glitches, overall the students enjoyed and learnt a lot from the trip. To sum up, many of the students suggested that BBS KJ should have this trip as an annual event. BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 A Notable Alumni With each eNewsletter, BBS will feature a story about a notable or outstanding alumnus or interesting events involving BBS Alumni. In this issue, we are featuring Ms Claudia Novira, who graduated from Bina Bangsa PIK, was recently interviewed by High End Teen magazine about her experience as the Star Teen Winner of 2012. Claudia shared some lessons she learnt while participating in Star Teen. Without hesitation, she said that the best experience she had was getting to know lots of people through this platform, such as Star Teen seniors, judges and other candidates. Star teen was definitely a stepping-stone in her career, she added. The quarantine period especially, played a huge part in her growth as an entertainer as she was pushed to her limits with lots of talent shows, stage acts, dancing, as well as public speaking. “Success is a ladder that you can’t climb with your hands in your pockets” Claudia shared as her life motto. The show itself made her realise that she loves being on stage and under the spotlight. She was thankful for the opportunity that HET had given her, and HET is equally thankful to have such an amazing ambassador. “Dream big and take action. Don’t be afraid to take chances. Without them, your dreams will only be dreams.” She shared especially for aspiring entertainers. Claudia is now busy with endorsements and blogger events. With 33.8 thousand Instagram followers, both local and international brands are flooding in to get their items featured on her page. She has embraced photoshoots, make up sessions, and interviews as part of her daily routine. Majoring in fashion business at Raffles Institution, Claudia shared that the entertainment industry has always sparked her interest and that she means to expand herself as an entertainer. At the same time, she’s working on a detox tea that will be launched in Indonesia soon. BBS wishes Claudia every success in the future. We are confident that she will make her alma mater proud in the years to come. BBS ENEWSLETTER | ISSUE 4 | MARCH 2016 BINA BANGSA CAMPUSES JAKARTA CAMPUSES KEBUN JERUK PRESCHOOL & PRIMARY Jl.
