2013 ANNUAL REPORT OUR NEW FOUNDATIONAL MESSAGING OUR VISION We envision a world in which young people, regardless of circumstances, have the opportunity to fulfill their potential and lead their families and communities to thrive. OUR MISSION Our mission is to help low-income teenagers transform what they believe is possible for themselves and develop the skills they need to become college-educated leaders who give back to their families and communities. LETTER FROM OUR CEO “No matter where you come from or how much money your family has, I want you to know that you can succeed in college, and get your degree, and then go on to build an incredible life for yourself.” — First Lady Michelle Obama Dear Friends, I invite you to take a moment to read this year’s annual report and appreciate how your support of Summer Search has positively impacted so many lives. Our students continue to inspire and impress us with their commitment to creating a brighter future for themselves—98 percent of our students successfully completed their summer program, and over 90 percent of high school seniors are headed to college. For many students, Summer Search is their first time spending weeks away from home, their first time on an airplane and an opportunity to be the first in their families to earn a college degree. In many ways, 2013 was also a year of “firsts” for Summer Search. It was our first time being named one of the “Best Nonprofits to Work For” by The NonProfit Times; our first time serving the highest concentration of male students ever; and the launch of our national Alumni Network to engage and connect the 2,000+ strong (and growing) Summer Search alumni base. Last year, we also challenged ourselves to better articulate the Summer Search story—who we are, what we do and why we do it. We spoke with people throughout our community: donors, staff, volunteers, summer partners, board members and, of course, alumni. What resulted is a refresh to our brand positioning and visual identity, which you see incorporated throughout the report. We have declared our vision for the future and refined our mission statement (see opposite page). Most visible is our new logo with an iconic wing mark, representing the new heights our students will reach as they begin their Summer Search journey. All of it makes up the Summer Search brand, and it tells our story in a powerful way. Yet, what remains at the heart of our work is the dedication to help low-income teenagers transform what they believe is possible for themselves, and help them build the life skills needed to become college-educated leaders who give back to their communities. It is a journey that begins in their sophomore year of high school and continues to, and beyond, college graduation. Featured in this report are just a few of the many Summer Search alumni who are serving as beacons of change. We are proud to have supported more than 4,200 young people on their path to leadership and college success. Summer Search has momentum on many fronts, making it an exciting time for the organization. As the Obama administration pushes for expansion of college opportunities for low-income students, Summer Search is poised to become a thought leader and influencer in youth development. We have a real opportunity, in continued partnership with you, to ensure more young people—regardless of their circumstances—have the opportunity to build an incredible future and rise to life’s full promise. As we reflect on, recognize and honor the efforts and accomplishments of our students and alumni, we are grateful to each one of our supporters. Thank you so very much for your generous support in 2013 and for your commitment to partnering with Summer Search to create powerful, lasting change. It is with profound gratitude and anticipation that I look forward to continuing our journey together for many years to come. Warmly, Amy H. Saxton Summer Search 2013 Annual Report 2 2013: NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS REFRESHING OUR BRAND In 2013, we continued our work with Elixir Design, a brand strategy firm, to refresh Summer Search’s brand positioning and visual identity. Guided by input from internal and external stakeholders, we now have a stated vision and refined mission statement (see inside front cover). Our new foundational messaging better describes who we are, what we do and why we do it. We also have a new logo with an iconic wing mark and descriptive line, a fresh color palette, and soon a new website. This work reinforces our strong reputation as a nonprofit leader and presents the Summer Search brand in a consistent and compelling way. GETTING FOCUSED ON INNOVATION After a rigorous recruitment process, Summer Search welcomed Sandra LaFleur as Vice President of Programs—a new position within the organization, responsible for leading efforts to expand our innovation initiatives. Previously, she spent nearly 20 years at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, most recently as associate vice president of research, evaluation and innovation. Since joining last summer, Sandra set out to prioritize ways to scale our program both strategically and systematically while introducing innovations to streamline costs and operations. In 2013, with board and staff input, over 100+ innovation ideas were generated across the Summer Search network. Using thoughtful criteria, the list was culled to 14 promising program innovations such as group mentoring, internships for high school students and more. The rich experience that Sandra brings to Summer Search will be invaluable as we pilot large-scale initiatives to accelerate organizational growth and deepen our impact. WINNING RECOGNITION Summer Search was named one of the “Best Nonprofits to Work For” by The NonProfit Times—a first-time honor for the organization. Created in 2010 to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in the nonprofit industry, The NonProfit Times conducts an annual nationwide survey with staff at nonprofit organizations—ranging in topics from employee satisfaction and work environment to training and development, pay and benefits. Summer Search debuted on the list in 2013, ranking 38 out of 50 of the best nonprofits to work for in the United States. 3 Summer Search 2013 Annual Report INCREASING OUR MEDIA ATTENTION Summer Search garnered attention in a number of high-profile print and broadcast media outlets in 2013. From the front page of the Philadelphia Inquirer to the evening broadcast on NY1, Summer Search made headlines. STRENGTHENING OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM We welcomed new talent to our national and local leadership teams with the hiring of Guadalupe Nickell as chief development officer and Aubrey Merriman as executive director for Summer Search Silicon Valley. Guadalupe joined Summer Search’s national team in February 2013 with over 15 years of leadership, management and strategic planning experience across the nonprofit and private sectors. Most recently, Guadalupe held leadership positions at Room to Read, a global literacy organization, where she managed the organization’s North American and European development programs. In November 2013, Aubrey Merriman joined Summer Search Silicon Valley with over 15 years of leadership, management, business operations and fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector. Previously, he served as senior vice president of business development for the Special Olympics in Northern California and Nevada. Aubrey and Guadalupe’s added leadership and expertise will be instrumental in helping Summer Search reach its strategic growth and impact goals. ENGAGING OUR ALUMNI We are excited about the launch last fall of the Summer Search National Alumni Network. With a new brand identity and a focus on professional networking, lifelong learning, volunteerism and philanthropy, over 2,000 Summer Search alumni are now formally part of this growing national network. Alumni can expect quarterly newsletters, a fresh focus on alumni philanthropy, and more opportunities to meet and work directly with our students. REACHING MORE MALES OF COLOR For years the percentage of male students enrolled in Summer Search hovered in the mid-30s due to the lower number of boys who are nominated and apply to our program versus girls. Last year, we set out to research how to solve this problem. We looked at peer organizations, held focus groups with current male students and conducted extensive literature reviews. Next, we piloted new strategies such as nominating one male for every female student and creating environments conducive to male peer-to-peer connection. The early results are encouraging. In 2013, incoming male sophomores increased to 45 percent overall, and each Summer Search office achieved 40 percent male student enrollment. By focusing on relevant and compelling messages to young men, we aim to achieve gender balance by 2017. INFLUENCING COLLEGE READINESS Summer Search was one of six organizations selected by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to participate in a study to better understand the positive impact that community organizations can have on academic achievement. Conducted by MGS Consulting Group, Inc. and focused in Seattle, the study found that 89 percent of Seattle public high school students enrolled in Summer Search for one year were better prepared for college compared to 64 percent of their peers in control groups. Additionally, Summer Search students achieved significantly higher grades and were enrolled in more challenging courses. The results validate Summer Search’s focus on developing the skills and character traits low-income youths need to complete high school and succeed in college. OUR VAL U PURSUE EXCELLENCE We constantly strive to be excellent as individuals and as an organization. SUMMER SEARCH BOSTON UM H U NI ARC AL M MER SE S When my parents, eight siblings and I arrived in Massachusetts in 2000, I was 17 years old and I didn’t speak any English. Back in Afghanistan, my home country, my father’s work with the Red Cross and his support of education for girls had made our family a target of the Taliban. Safety was a big concern and the main reason why we fled to the United States. SUMMER EXPERIENCE Smith College Summer Science and Engineering Program E D U C AT I O N Regis College, Class of 2008 B.A. International Relations; minor in Sociology Brandeis University, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Class of 2012 M.A. (dual) Sustainable International Development & Coexistence and Conflict Resolution O C C U PAT I O N Project Manager, Afghan Women Leaders Connect Program Associate, Creative Associates International 9 Summer Search 2013 Annual Report With my father’s encouragement, I was motivated to go to college, but I had no idea where to begin. Summer Search helped “SUMMER SEARCH prepare me every step of the HELPED ME FIND THE way—from arranging a summer stay on a college campus INNER STRENGTH to providing crucial financialaid advising and support. TO IN MY CAPABILITIES AND During my freshman year in college, my father was diagACHIEVE WHAT I SET nosed with cancer and soon passed away. It was a tough MY MIND TO DO.” time for my family because most of my siblings were still under 18, and my father had been the guiding force in our lives. My siblings and I struggled to continue our education, but we persisted in our studies because we knew it was what our father would have wanted. When I graduated from college in 2008, I became the first woman ever in my family to earn a college degree. My work today is focused on strengthening human rights and gender equality in education in South and Central Asia, including Afghanistan. I help develop sustainable solutions to lead communities and future generations to thrive, and that includes educating all girls—as my father would have championed. JOSEPH R. SUMMER SEARCH NEW YORK CITY MM E SEAR H I C LUMN R A SU The summer after graduating college, I took a job as a baseball coach at a summer camp for kids aged 5–18. I wanted to do something fun before joining the workforce full time, and as a kid I had always dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, so I immediately accepted. SUMMER EXPERIENCES Longacre Expeditions in New England and Canada American Field Service (AFS-USA) in Japan E D U C AT I O N St. John’s University, Class of 2011 B.A. Marketing O C C U PAT I O N Project Document Coordinator, Shawmut Design and Construction Some of the kids were on scholarship and it was their first time at a sleepaway camp. It was all new to them, and I could see how appreciative and determined they were to make the most of the experience. It’s something I could identify with because growing up in the Bronx, I had a similar feeling after joining Summer Search. I felt like an outsider at first, and was not sure I belonged. As a camp counselor and coach, it was my job to provide encouragement and support to the kids to try new things. There was a 7-year-old boy who injured his leg one day during a soccer game. He had to wear a cast for the remainder of camp and miss out on most of the activities. It “I FEEL I HAVE really affected his mood. I took it upon myself to keep him MORE OF AN ADULT, company and talk with him AND MORE RESPONSIBLE, whenever I could. On our last day, during an awards BECAUSE OF SUMMER ceremony, he surprised me SEARCH. I LEARNED with a patch given only to those who demonstrate THAT MY WORDS AND determination and kindness. ACTIONS MATTER.” He said he chose me because I made him feel included and less of an outsider. It was an unexpected and special moment—but one I can trace back to the mentoring I received at Summer Search. My mentors constantly stressed to me that life is about choices—that I have the choice to be a good person and to positively influence the lives of others. That’s what I was reminded of when coaching that summer—it’s the little things you do for someone that can make the biggest difference. Summer Search 2013 Annual Report 10 JESSICA A. SUMMER SEARCH NORTH BAY UM H U NI ARC AL M MER SE S So much of what happens in our lives is determined by the choices we make. As a teenager, I didn’t want to hear that. Growing up in Marin County, my family bounced around a lot. My father passed away when I was in elementary school, and my mom’s mental health issues strained our relationship. Ultimately, I was forced to leave home during my senior year in high school. SUMMER EXPERIENCES National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Where There Be Dragons Service in Peru E D U C AT I O N Colby College, Class of 2011 B.A. Sociology and AfricanAmerican Studies O C C U PAT I O N 1st year student, Northwestern Law School Summer Search was the biggest gift in my life during that time. While I was never in trouble at school, my emotions simmered close to the surface. I was quick to anger and kept people at a distance. I also didn’t have any aspirations to go to college. I figured my upbringing was destined to dictate my future. Deciding not to be a victim to my childhood is what changed everything for me—and Summer Search “EXPERIENTIAL had a big hand in that. They taught me the virtues of LEARNING IS WHY self-awareness and empathy, I WAS DRAWN TO and to think critically about my own choices and actions SUMMER SEARCH— and how they affect others. Once I fulfilled my commitment, I applied to law school because it was something I had always thought about doing. Given my background, I want to do work in the public interest by focusing on family law. It’s something I am passionate about and a goal I would not have set for myself were it not for Summer Search. The support I received helped me to develop faith in myself and in my ability to contribute to the world in a positive way. SUMMER SEARCH PHILADELPHIA MM E SEAR H I C LUMN R A SU Attending Syracuse University during a summer trip with Summer Search—my first time on a college campus—was when I realized a fouryear university might be within reach; there was no good reason why I shouldn’t be getting good grades in high school. I had let life circumstances convince me I wasn’t really capable of accomplishing much. SUMMER EXPERIENCES Outward Bound in Grand Junction, Colorado Syracuse University Summer College E D U C AT I O N Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, Class of 2015 B.A. Finance and Management O C C U PAT I O N Undergraduate college student My experience with Summer Search taught me that I had it within myself to be a leader—an idea that I took to heart in school and at home. As the oldest child—and with a father in and out of jail—I felt a responsibility to be a role model to my younger siblings. Once I allowed myself to believe I could become something more, I started pushing myself harder, setting and reaching higher goals. My grades steadily improved and I began applying to colleges with help from my Summer Search “ONCE I ALLOWED mentor and financial aid counselor. MYSELF TO I remember receiving my college I COULD BECOME acceptance letters and my mother saying to me: “Keep doing what you SOMETHING MORE, are doing because your brothers I STARTED PUSHING and sister are going to follow in your footsteps.” One of my brothers MYSELF HARDER.” is now a freshman in college, and the other one is attending a magnet high school. He often calls me when he aces an exam or gets a good grade. It means a lot to know my brothers are focused on their education and that I have set a good example for them. I will continue to pass on the knowledge and lessons I learned from Summer Search to help them in any way I can. Recently, I was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society—a national honor given to those who are in the top 10% of their college class. It’s a distinction I’m proud of because I worked hard for it, but mainly because it proves that things don’t happen in life to you; you are the one who has the power to make things happen for yourself. SUMMER SEARCH SAN FRANCISCO UM H U NI ARC AL M MER SE S Even though I grew up in a low-income neighborhood without many opportunities, I felt fortunate to have Summer Search. The support and resources given to me in those formative years were life changing. I felt a responsibility to pay it forward someday. The seven years I spent there—from high school through college—solidified my career path. I realized that I wanted to fully dedicate myself to empowering kids in my community to reach their full potential. I wanted to give them the same opportunities to succeed that I had received thanks to Summer Search. My professional passion intersected with my personal life when I met and married my husband eight years ago while working for a youth development nonprofit. We have a 5-year-old daughter and a second child on the way. Early in my career, my daughter would accompany me to meetings and it was heartening for me to see my daughter embraced by the same community in which I was raised—to see all of us working “EVERYONE HAS toward improving the lives of the people in our neighborhood. THE POTENTIAL As a parent, I feel it’s important to TO instill in my children the value of A LEADER WHO giving back. I want them to remain connected to our family roots so HELPS OTHERS.” they understand that not everyone has the same opportunities in life, but everyone has the potential to become a leader who help others. Today, my job is to manage the City of San Pablo Community Schools Initiative to better support youth in our public schools. Through my work, I am able to serve my community and be a role model for the students and families I work with daily—and, most especially, for my children. That is what’s most important to me. 13 Summer Search 2013 Annual Report MARIA C. SUMMER SEARCH SEATTLE MM E SEAR H I C LUMN R A SU Summer Search was the first to tell me I could go to college. He was considered a troublemaker in school and teachers were quick to label me the same. From day one, I worked hard to prove them wrong, studied hard and took advantage of every opportunity given to me. After becoming the first in my family to graduate high school, and then college, I started thinking about other students who too often get labeled as “troublemakers” and how many see themselves as “less than” and never aspire to rise above others’ low expectations. It made me think about my brother and what his future would have been like had someone taken “I THAT WITH an active interest and given him proper guidance. That’s what led THE RIGHT RESOURCES me to join AmeriCorps after college graduation. I welcomed the chance AND A LITTLE PUSH IN to reach kids in similar situations— THE RIGHT DIRECTION, to mentor them and find resources to help them succeed—the way ANY STUDENT Summer Search had done for me. But I could see that he was smart and capable of more. It’s taken a few months, but we’ve built mutual trust and he understands I am here to help, not to judge or label him. With my encouragement and assistance, he even applied for and received a scholarship for community college. It was a proud moment for both of us. Summer Search 2013 Annual Report 14 TONY H. Looking back, I consider my second summer trip—a service trip in Paraguay—as having opened my eyes to the world around me. I lived with a host family and was immersed in a new language and culture for the first time. It sounds cliché, but it was like I had been stuck in a small room and Summer Search handed me the keys to the mansion. The world suddenly became a much bigger place and full of possibilities. My transformation had begun, and I didn’t even know it. My choice to attend college in Vermont, thousands of miles away from home, and my desire to study abroad were influenced largely by Summer Search and that summer in South America—it had “THE WORLD SUDDENLY pushed me outside of my A MUCH comfort zone and ignited a sense of exploration. I first BIGGER PLACE AND studied abroad in England, then Beijing, China, from FULL OF POSSIBILITIES.” December 2011 to June 2012. That experience was like my third Summer Search trip because I met people from different backgrounds, experienced new customs and ultimately learned so much about myself. That’s why I enjoy my job in sales for the tech industry so much. It’s the perfect work environment for me because it fosters my curiosity and allows me to build interpersonal skills. Talking to my clients, hearing about their needs and interests, is my favorite part of the job. My goal one day is to live and work in Shanghai or Hong Kong, or Singapore, because I’m still fascinated with East Asia. I can’t imagine my life as it is now—professionally and personally—without having been a part of Summer Search. It was the entire experience—the intense mentoring, the opportunities to travel, the lessons on self-reflection and gratitude— that gave me the confidence to never stop exploring and to continue pushing myself to become the person I envision myself to be. As a leading corporate investor in the Bay Area, JPMorgan Chase has been an essential partner in helping Summer Search close the opportunity gap for low-income students. In 2013, JPMorgan Chase awarded Summer Search’s three Bay Area sites $100,000 to provide students with year-round professional mentorship, scholarships to experiential opportunities, college counseling, and a lasting support network to broaden their perspectives and build critical skills to thrive in school and beyond. We are grateful for our holistic partnership, including the numerous JPMorgan Chase employees who provide countless hours volunteering with Summer Search. These volunteers add tremendous value and provide meaningful support as regional board members, event hosts and leadership committee members, and as career coaches for our students, helping them navigate a career path and better understand what it means to be a first-generation professional. It’s so clear to me now that my path to opportunity began the moment I set foot in that room. While donations from individuals have continued to drive our growth and were $9.2 million, up 15% over 2012’s $8.0 million, we are working to diversify our funding base by seeking more institutional support from corporate and foundation donors. In 2013, donations from corporate and foundations donors combined for $5.1 million, a 6% increase over previous year’s total of $4.8 million. Contributed goods and services of $1.9 million, mostly scholarships donated by our summer program partners, showed a 10% increase over last year. In 2013, summer program scholarships averaged $1,861 per student, the highest ever, reflecting the large financial support we receive from them. Our summer program partners are vital to Summer Search’s growth. These scholarships represented 36% of the total cost to send a student on a trip, also the highest percentage share of trip costs we’ve ever received from our partners. HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR FISCAL YEAR 2013 FINANCIALS INCLUDE: A half million dollar increase in cash and investments from $6.8 million in FY2012 to $7.3 million. Total cash and investments of $7.3 million represented six months of cash operating expenses, putting Summer Search in the “best practice” category compared to its peers. Held management and general expenses to 10% of total expenses. Program spending represented 74% of our total spending in 2013 compared to 75% in 2012, due to an increase in expenditures in marketing, fundraising and information technology. These investments were necessary for Summer Search to grow and achieve scale. We expect the program ratio to rise above 75% in 2014 and 2015. 2013 CONTRIBUTIONS BY TYPE OF DONOR Individual - 65% DO N O RS Foundation - 26% Corporation - 9% 2013 TOTAL EXPENSES Program Services - 74% EX PEN S ES Fundraising, Management and General - 26% 2013 PROGRAM FUNCTIONAL BREAKDOWN Summer Placement and Mentoring - 79% Staff Training - 9% PRO GRA M 21 Summer Search 2013 Annual Report College Advising - 4% College Success Program - 3% Alumni Program - 4% STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE 12 MONTHS ENDING SEPTEMBER 30, 2013 AND 2012 R EV EN U E, GA IN S A N D OTH E R S U PPORT 2013 2012 Individual $9,141,731 $8,001,646 Foundation $3,709,986 $3,441,275 Corporation $1,342,077 $1,327,720 $14,193,794 $12,770,641 $1,886,014 $1,718,449 $685,035 $602,680 $887 $13,506 $16,765,730 $15,105,276 Summer Placement and Mentoring $9,655,586 $8,567,354 Staff Training and Development $1,247,948 $1,125,328 College Advising $502,255 $417,450 College Success Program $334,484 $335,817 Alumni $446,254 $270,663 $12,186,527 $10,716,612 Fundraising $2,639,436 $2,051,788 Management and General $1,749,818 $1,465,139 $16,575,781 $14,233,539 $1,024 $2,501,751 Change in Temporarily Restricted Net Assets $188,925 ($1,630,014) Change in Permanently Restricted Net Assets $0 $0 Unrestricted Net Assets at Beginning of Year $6,167,266 $3,665,515 Temporarily Restricted Net Assets at Beginning of Year $5,136,783 $6,766,797 Permanently Restricted Net Assets at Beginning of Year $60,000 $60,000 $11,553,998 $11,364,049 Total Contributions Contributed Goods and Services Investment Income Other Income Total revenue, gains and other support O PER AT IN G EXP E N S E S Program Services Total Program Services Supporting Services Total Expenses AS S ETS Change in Unrestricted Net Assets Net Assets at End of Year Summer Search 2013 Annual Report 22 OUR IN-KIND DONORS THIS LIST RECOGNIZES THE SUPPORT FROM OUR IN-KIND DONORS FOR OR DURING FISCAL YEAR 2013.
