ANNUAL REPORT
OUR NEW FOUNDATIONAL MESSAGING
OUR VISION
We envision a world in which young people, regardless of circumstances, have
the opportunity to fulfill their potential and lead their families and communities to thrive.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to help low-income teenagers transform what they believe is possible
for themselves and develop the skills they need to become college-educated leaders
who give back to their families and communities.
LETTER FROM OUR CEO
“No matter where you come from or how much money your family has, I want
you to know that you can succeed in college, and get your degree, and then go
on to build an incredible life for yourself.”
— First Lady Michelle Obama
Dear Friends,
I invite you to take a moment to read this year’s annual report and appreciate
how your support of Summer Search has positively impacted so many lives. Our
students continue to inspire and impress us with their commitment to creating
a brighter future for themselves—98 percent of our students successfully
completed their summer program, and over 90 percent of high school seniors
are headed to college.
For many students, Summer Search is their first time spending weeks away
from home, their first time on an airplane and an opportunity to be the first in
their families to earn a college degree. In many ways, 2013 was also a year of
“firsts” for Summer Search. It was our first time being named one of the “Best Nonprofits to Work For” by
The NonProfit Times; our first time serving the highest concentration of male students ever; and the launch
of our national Alumni Network to engage and connect the 2,000+ strong (and growing) Summer Search
alumni base.
Last year, we also challenged ourselves to better articulate the Summer Search story—who we are, what
we do and why we do it. We spoke with people throughout our community: donors, staff, volunteers, summer
partners, board members and, of course, alumni. What resulted is a refresh to our brand positioning and
visual identity, which you see incorporated throughout the report. We have declared our vision for the future
and refined our mission statement (see opposite page). Most visible is our new logo with an iconic wing mark,
representing the new heights our students will reach as they begin their Summer Search journey. All of it
makes up the Summer Search brand, and it tells our story in a powerful way.
Yet, what remains at the heart of our work is the dedication to help low-income teenagers transform what
they believe is possible for themselves, and help them build the life skills needed to become college-educated
leaders who give back to their communities. It is a journey that begins in their sophomore year of high school
and continues to, and beyond, college graduation. Featured in this report are just a few of the many Summer
Search alumni who are serving as beacons of change. We are proud to have supported more than 4,200 young
people on their path to leadership and college success.
Summer Search has momentum on many fronts, making it an exciting time for the organization. As the Obama
administration pushes for expansion of college opportunities for low-income students, Summer Search is
poised to become a thought leader and influencer in youth development. We have a real opportunity, in
continued partnership with you, to ensure more young people—regardless of their circumstances—have the
opportunity to build an incredible future and rise to life’s full promise.
As we reflect on, recognize and honor the efforts and accomplishments of our students and alumni, we are
grateful to each one of our supporters. Thank you so very much for your generous support in 2013 and for
your commitment to partnering with Summer Search to create powerful, lasting change. It is with profound
gratitude and anticipation that I look forward to continuing our journey together for many years to come.
Warmly,
Amy H. Saxton

2013: NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS
REFRESHING OUR BRAND
In 2013, we continued our work with Elixir Design, a brand strategy firm, to
refresh Summer Search’s brand positioning and visual identity. Guided by input
from internal and external stakeholders, we now have a stated vision and refined
mission statement (see inside front cover). Our new foundational messaging better
describes who we are, what we do and why we do it. We also have a new logo with
an iconic wing mark and descriptive line, a fresh color palette, and soon a new
website. This work reinforces our strong reputation as a nonprofit leader and
presents the Summer Search brand in a consistent and compelling way.
GETTING FOCUSED ON INNOVATION
After a rigorous recruitment process, Summer Search welcomed Sandra LaFleur as Vice President of
Programs—a new position within the organization, responsible for leading efforts to expand our innovation
initiatives. Previously, she spent nearly 20 years at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, most recently as
associate vice president of research, evaluation and innovation.
Since joining last summer, Sandra set out to prioritize ways to scale our program both strategically and
systematically while introducing innovations to streamline costs and operations. In 2013, with board and
staff input, over 100+ innovation ideas were generated across the Summer Search network. Using thoughtful
criteria, the list was culled to 14 promising program innovations such as group mentoring, internships for
high school students and more. The rich experience that Sandra brings to Summer Search will be invaluable
as we pilot large-scale initiatives to accelerate organizational growth and deepen our impact.
WINNING RECOGNITION
Summer Search was named one of the “Best Nonprofits to Work For” by The
NonProfit Times—a first-time honor for the organization. Created in 2010 to
identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in the nonprofit
industry, The NonProfit Times conducts an annual nationwide survey with staff
at nonprofit organizations—ranging in topics from employee satisfaction and
work environment to training and development, pay and benefits. Summer Search
debuted on the list in 2013, ranking 38 out of 50 of the best nonprofits to work for
in the United States.

INCREASING OUR MEDIA ATTENTION
Summer Search garnered attention in a number of high-profile print and broadcast media outlets in 2013. From
the front page of the Philadelphia Inquirer to the evening broadcast on NY1, Summer Search made headlines.
STRENGTHENING OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM
We welcomed new talent to our national and local leadership teams with the hiring of Guadalupe Nickell as chief
development officer and Aubrey Merriman as executive director for Summer Search Silicon Valley.
Guadalupe joined Summer Search’s national team in February 2013 with over 15 years of leadership, management
and strategic planning experience across the nonprofit and private sectors. Most recently, Guadalupe held
leadership positions at Room to Read, a global literacy organization, where she managed the organization’s
North American and European development programs. In November 2013, Aubrey Merriman joined Summer
Search Silicon Valley with over 15 years of leadership, management, business operations and fundraising
experience in the nonprofit sector. Previously, he served as senior vice president of business development for
the Special Olympics in Northern California and Nevada.
Aubrey and Guadalupe’s added leadership and expertise will be instrumental in helping Summer Search reach its
strategic growth and impact goals.
ENGAGING OUR ALUMNI
We are excited about the launch last fall of the Summer Search National Alumni
Network. With a new brand identity and a focus on professional networking,
lifelong learning, volunteerism and philanthropy, over 2,000 Summer Search
alumni are now formally part of this growing national network. Alumni can
expect quarterly newsletters, a fresh focus on alumni philanthropy, and more
opportunities to meet and work directly with our students.
REACHING MORE MALES OF COLOR
For years the percentage of male students enrolled in Summer Search hovered in the mid-30s due to the lower
number of boys who are nominated and apply to our program versus girls. Last year, we set out to research
how to solve this problem. We looked at peer organizations, held focus groups with current male students and
conducted extensive literature reviews. Next, we piloted new strategies such as nominating one male for every
female student and creating environments conducive to male peer-to-peer connection. The early results are
encouraging. In 2013, incoming male sophomores increased to 45 percent overall, and each Summer Search office
achieved 40 percent male student enrollment. By focusing on relevant and compelling messages to young men,
we aim to achieve gender balance by 2017.
INFLUENCING COLLEGE READINESS
Summer Search was one of six organizations selected by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to participate in a
study to better understand the positive impact that community organizations can have on academic achievement.
Conducted by MGS Consulting Group, Inc. and focused in Seattle, the study found that 89 percent of Seattle
public high school students enrolled in Summer Search for one year were better prepared for college compared
to 64 percent of their peers in control groups. Additionally, Summer Search students achieved significantly higher
grades and were enrolled in more challenging courses. The results validate Summer Search’s focus on developing
the skills and character traits low-income youths need to complete high school and succeed in college.

When my parents, eight siblings and I arrived in Massachusetts in 2000,
I was 17 years old and I didn’t speak any English. Back in Afghanistan,
my home country, my father’s work with the Red Cross and his support
of education for girls had made our family a target of the Taliban. Safety
was a big concern and the main reason why we fled to the United States.

When I graduated from college in 2008, I became the first woman ever in
my family to earn a college degree.
My work today is focused on strengthening human rights and gender

The summer after graduating college, I took a job as a baseball coach

becoming a professional baseball player, so I immediately accepted.

Some of the kids were on scholarship and it was their first time at a sleepaway camp. It was all new to them, and I could see how appreciative and
determined they were to make the most of the experience. It’s something
I could identify with because growing up in the Bronx, I had a similar
feeling after joining Summer Search. I felt like an outsider at first, and was
not sure I belonged.
As a camp counselor and coach, it was my job to provide encouragement
and support to the kids to try new things. There was a 7-year-old boy who
injured his leg one day during a soccer game. He had to wear a cast for the
remainder of camp and miss out
on most of the activities. It

He said he chose me because
I made him feel included and
less of an outsider. It was an unexpected and special moment—but one I
can trace back to the mentoring I received at Summer Search. My mentors
constantly stressed to me that life is about choices—that I have the choice to
be a good person and to positively influence the lives of others. That’s what I
was reminded of when coaching that summer—it’s the little things you do for
someone that can make the biggest difference.

So much of what happens in our lives is determined by the choices we
make. As a teenager, I didn’t want to hear that. Growing up in Marin

Summer Search was the biggest gift in my life during that time. While
I was never in trouble at school, my emotions simmered close to the
surface. I was quick to anger and kept people at a distance. I also didn’t
have any aspirations to go to college. I figured my upbringing was
destined to dictate my future.
Deciding not to be a victim to my childhood is what changed everything
for me—and Summer Search

I want to do work in the public interest by focusing on family law. It’s

The value of Summer Search’s support in my life is becoming more
evident to me as I get older. Looking back, I consider my second
summer trip—a service trip in Paraguay—as having opened my eyes to
the world around me. I lived with a host family and was immersed in a
new language and culture for the first time. It sounds cliché, but it was
like I had been stuck in a small room and Summer Search handed me the
keys to the mansion. The world suddenly became a much bigger place
and full of possibilities. My transformation had begun, and I didn’t even
know it.
My choice to attend college in Vermont, thousands of miles away from
home, and my desire to study abroad were influenced largely by Summer
Search and that summer
in South America—it had
“THE WORLD SUDDENLY
pushed me outside of my
A MUCH
comfort zone and ignited a
sense of exploration. I first
BIGGER PLACE AND
studied abroad in England,
then Beijing, China, from
FULL OF POSSIBILITIES.”
December 2011 to June 2012.
That experience was like my third Summer Search trip because I met
people from different backgrounds, experienced new customs and
ultimately learned so much about myself.
That’s why I enjoy my job in sales for the tech industry so much. It’s
the perfect work environment for me because it fosters my curiosity
and allows me to build interpersonal skills. Talking to my clients, hearing
about their needs and interests, is my favorite part of the job. My goal
one day is to live and work in Shanghai or Hong Kong, or Singapore,
because I’m still fascinated with East Asia. I can’t imagine my life as it is
now—professionally and personally—without having been a part of
Summer Search. It was the entire experience—the intense mentoring,
the opportunities to travel, the lessons on self-reflection and gratitude—
that gave me the confidence to never stop exploring and to continue
pushing myself to become the person I envision myself to be.

JPMorgan Chase has made a significant investment of time and financial support in Summer Search and
the success of our students. As a leading corporate investor in the Bay Area, JPMorgan Chase has been an
essential partner in helping Summer Search close the opportunity gap for low-income students. In 2013,
JPMorgan Chase awarded Summer Search’s three Bay Area sites $100,000 to provide students with year-round
professional mentorship, scholarships to experiential opportunities, college counseling, and a lasting support
network to broaden their perspectives and build critical skills to thrive in school and beyond.
We are grateful for our holistic partnership, including the numerous JPMorgan Chase employees who provide
countless hours volunteering with Summer Search. These volunteers add tremendous value and provide
meaningful support as regional board members, event hosts and leadership committee members, and as
career coaches for our students, helping them navigate a career path and better understand what it means
to be a first-generation professional.

A LE X C ON STA N T IN
Associate, Consumer & Community Banking, JPMorgan Chase & Co.,
Summer Search Alumnus, Summer Search New York City Young
Leadership Committee Member since 2012, Chair of the Professional
Development and Student Engagement Committee
Looking back, I can attribute every aspect of my journey toward success
to the unconditional support, academic and professional resources, and
guidance I’ve received from Summer Search throughout the years—going
back to that fateful day in my sophomore year of high school when I sat
down for my Summer Search interview. It’s so clear to me now that my
path to opportunity began the moment I set foot in that room. As a Summer Search alumnus, joining the Young Leadership Committee was only the
start of my dedication to giving back to an organization that has given me
so much as well as a humble expression of my endless gratitude.

Vice President, Private Banking, JPMorgan Chase & Co.,
Summer Search Silicon Valley Board Member since 2011
I became involved with Summer Search because I was curious to learn
more about the organization’s approach to transforming the lives of so
many low-income high school students—empowering them to become
college-educated, confident and altruistic citizens who give back to their
communities. The results speak for themselves: 83 percent of Summer
Search students are on track to earning a college degree; contrast that
with fewer than 1 in 10 of their peers. Summer Search is an incredible
organization that truly impacts lives.

San Francisco Young Professional Committee Member since 2012
I serve as a Co-chair of the JPMorgan Chase Bay Area Volunteer Leadership
Group, where we focus on providing employees with volunteer opportunities
in our communities. Partnering with an organization like Summer Search
to offer employees the career coach volunteer experience is fantastic. I
believe that Summer Search is making a huge difference through cultivating
students to become determined, altruistic leaders. I am now volunteering
as a career coach for the third time and am currently in my second year
as a member of the Summer Search San Francisco Young Professionals
Committee—a group dedicated to broadening support for Summer Search
from younger professionals in the Bay Area.
K I M KA RE TS KY
Executive Director, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Summer Search
New York City Supporter since 2009
My family has been involved with Summer Search for almost five years
and have seen this organization transform the lives of young people.
Through Summer Search, I’ve watched shy high school students become
determined young professionals who excel. I can’t think of a more
powerful organization to support.

FINANCIAL RESULTS
In 2013 annual contributions of $14.2 million were 11% higher than previous year’s $12.8 million. While donations
from individuals have continued to drive our growth and were $9.2 million, up 15% over 2012’s $8.0 million, we
are working to diversify our funding base by seeking more institutional support from corporate and foundation
donors. In 2013, donations from corporate and foundations donors combined for $5.1 million, a 6% increase over
previous year’s total of $4.8 million.
Contributed goods and services of $1.9 million, mostly scholarships donated by our summer program partners,
showed a 10% increase over last year. In 2013, summer program scholarships averaged $1,861 per student, the
highest ever, reflecting the large financial support we receive from them. Our summer program partners are vital
to Summer Search’s growth. These scholarships represented 36% of the total cost to send a student on a trip,
also the highest percentage share of trip costs we’ve ever received from our partners.
HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR FISCAL YEAR 2013 FINANCIALS INCLUDE:
A half million dollar increase in cash and investments from $6.8 million in FY2012 to $7.3 million. Total
cash and investments of $7.3 million represented six months of cash operating expenses, putting
Summer Search in the “best practice” category compared to its peers.
Held management and general expenses to 10% of total expenses.
Program spending represented 74% of our total spending in 2013 compared to 75% in 2012, due to
an increase in expenditures in marketing, fundraising and information technology. These investments were necessary for Summer Search to grow and achieve scale. We expect the program ratio to rise above 75% in 2014 and 2015.
