The blocks that bind
■ Lead-Deadwood Quilters
back community at Christmas

Community Christmas Celebration. Pioneer photo by Jaci Conrad

!EAD-DEADWOOD — These !eadDeadwood ladies may all be cut from the same
bolt of cloth and they can be counted on to continually back the community at Christmastime.
They share a love for quilting and their
enthusiasm for the craft is contagious. But on a
higher level, the end result of their ticking, tacking, tatting and batting is gifted upon others.
This Christmas season alone, the !eadDeadwood quilters took it upon themselves to
donate 10 quilts for names on the Community
Christmas Celebration senior tree at Bloomer's.
But they didn't quit cutting blocks from bolts
there.
Forging ahead, they quilted 26 socks to
adorn every single Lolden Ridge resident's
door.
“We delivered them early so they could
enjoy them throughout the season,” said Arlene
Lustafson. Truly, their love for the craft of
quilting has warmed hundreds of !eadDeadwood residents over the years.
But first, most of the completed quilts end up
in the “stash room” in the basement of Lrace
!utheran Church, the group's lair, lined with
shelf upon shelf of fabric and gorgeous handcrafted quilts.
“After awhile, there's only so many places
you can put quilts at your house,” said !oretta
Qlein, explaining why the group, which meets
twice a month, is continually quilting.
“It keeps us off the streets and out of the
bars,” joked Qay Tirkula.
When the quilts come out of storage, the
quilting group, made up of a dozen or so, disburses hundreds a year, specially made for
newborns to teens to adults.
CASA receives close to 20, Dorsett,
Edgewood and Sandstone are all regular recipients, as are the nurse's stations at local schools,
just to name a few.
The !ead-Deadwood Wuilters are highly
cognizant of recycling and several of their creations are done with repurposed fabric. They
are highly appreciative of donations and can
always put all-cotton sheets of fabric to good
use. To donate fabric, call Arlene Lustafson at
X22-2008.
“We are very appreciative of Lrace
!utheran. It so nice of them to let us have all of
this room,” Lustafson said.

211th Engineers stay on mission in Afghanistan
■ Sturgis men help
clear the Afghan roads
B" S$T. JON E. DOU$HERT"
203rd 'ngineer ,atta/ion
N"AR &HARANA, Afghanistan 1 The
pre6mission brief concluded, combat engineer
&gt. Darrin Lewno of Wilmot, &.D., called
together the assembled route clearance crew,
all members of the CDDth "ngineer Eompany,
&outh DaGota Army National Huard.
IJur Father, who art in HeavenMN began
Lewno, as the surrounding &oldiers instinc6
tively bowed their heads and began to pray
with him in unison.
To the observer, their recitation of the
LordOs Prayer appeared comfortable and
familiar, not uptight or staged. For their mis6
sion to Geep routes clear of improvised eQplo6
sive devices RI"DsT 1 one of the most haU6
ardous in Afghanistan 1 the HuardsmenOs
appeal to the Almighty didnOt at all seem inap6
propriate. And, as some of them would soon
discover, it could be argued that their prayers
were answered.
As he ordered crews to their vehicles, mis6
sion commander Dst Lt. Ehris Long, of
&turgis, reflected the mentality and profes6
sionalism of his men. His confidence was
infectious, and by his words of instruction, it
was obvious neither he nor his crews were
under any illusions about the risGs they were
soon to face 1 again.
They all Gnew, for instance, the route they
were preparing to taGe was Iactive,N or Gnown
to be targeted often by enemy insurgents.
They were preparing to depart with the
Gnowledge that their own convoys had been
attacGed before along the very same route.
All in all, however, they would encounter
Inothing we havenOt seen before,N Long told
his men, prior to ordering them to their vehi6
cles.
And yet, driving headlong into the abyss
that is AfghanistanOs hinterlands is never an
easy thing to do, especially for route clearance
combat engineers 1 even if the veterans of
the CDDth maGe it looG that way.
&till, there was little opportunity to contem6
plate the matter. As the morning chill of the
approaching winter season persisted, the mis6
sionOs start time was VuicGly approaching and
there was no time to waste.
The crews had a long way to go. And they
had a mission to complete.

Meanwhile &pc. Lee Weber, of Pierre, the
vehicleOs driver, checGed gauges and prepared

The convoy began maGing its way past the
forward operating baseOs entry control point
R"EPT, onto a rare paved section of Afghan
highway. Erews were bound for a destination
that, on a good day, was more than seven
hours away.
But distances and travel time in
Afghanistan can be misleading, by American
standards, in that they are wildly out of pro6
portion. Most roads are just barely that 1
dusty, cratered dirt pathways barely large
enough for a single vehicle. Add to that the
ever6present danger of an I"D striGe or
ambush, and one can easily see why travel
times can be lengthy, even if distances
between bases often are minimal.
Besides, to the veteran Huardsmen, a Igood
dayN is one they have defined as devoid of
enemy contact, which can often delay a con6
voy for hours.
A few miles down the road, the vehicle dri6
vers wound way through the enclave of
&haran, which 1 at an early hour 1 was
already teeming with Afghan locals engaged
in various activities and commerce. Many of
them stopped and stared, as they often do, at
the lumbering MRAPs while they passed, the
low throaty rumble of their diesel engines
echoing off the various storefronts and mud6
and6wood residences.
At Gey intersections, Afghan National
Police officers stood watch, their A_6`a rifles
slung casually over their shoulders. bendors
peered out of their shops. Ehildren flashed
Ithumbs6upN signs.
A Gilometer or so out of town the road
turned from relatively smooth pavement to a
pothole6filled thoroughfare which caused the
vehicles to bucG and lurch.
IWe lost our first vehicle on this route,N
Dornbusch said somberly, reflecting on an
I"D hit some weeGs before.
Little did he Gnow that, some Cc minutes
later, the convoy would eQperience ddje vu.
IED(,%#/(SD(3-&4-5
The lead vehicles in each convoy 1 called
HusGies 1 slowly rumbled along the bumpy
route, scanning for any signs of enemy insur6
gents or buried I"Ds. Jn a few occasions
already, DornbuschOs Buffalo, eVuipped with a
special powerful hydraulic IarmN that is used
to Iinterrogate,N or dig, in potential sites, had
been reVuested to search a few areas, but so
far had found nothing.
&uddenly, as the convoy inched forward,
the sicGening IWhoompffN of an eQplosion
could be seen, heard 1 and felt 1 about gcc
or so feet ahead of the Buffalo.
In a flash, one of the lead HusGy vehicles
was violently disabled, a thicG cloud of smoGe
and dust rising rapidly from the detonation.
Immediately radio calls went out to the
HusGy to determine the fate of its driver, Pfc.
Brandon "ggers.

November home sales soar 7.4 percent
B- !.!) /'B$.
!P #eal ()tate +riter
WASHINDTON (AP) —
Home resales surged last month
to the highest level in nearly three
years, reflecting an extraordinary
level of federal support that has
pulled the housing market back
from the worst downturn since
the Dreat Depression.
Buyers were racing to complete their sales before the original expiration date of a tax credit
for first-time buyers that was
scheduled to expire Nov. 30. Last
month, Congress decided to
extend and expand the credit to
ensure the housing market could
sustain its recovery.
RThings are stabilizing,R said
Pete Flint, chief executive of real
estate Web site Trulia.com.
RThere is a significant amount of
buyer interest out there.R
About U million homebuyers
have taken advantage of the credit so far, the National Association
of Realtors said Tuesday. The
group forecasts that another U.W
million will use it by the middle
of next year. First-time buyers
made up about half of all transac-
tions last month, driving sales up
WW percent above last year's levels, a record jump.
RIn the short run, its an effective stimulus,R said John Ryding,
chief economist at RD[
Economics. RIf you give someone
money to spend on something,
they will spend it.R
November's sales rose ].W percent to a seasonally adjusted
annual rate of 6._W million, from
a downwardly revised pace of
6.09 million in October, the
Realtors group said. It was the
highest level since February
U00]. Sales had been expected to
rise to an annual pace of 6.U_ million, according to economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters.
Sales are now up W6 percent
from the bottom in January, but
down 10 percent from the peak
more than four years ago. The
inventory of unsold homes on the
market fell about 1 percent to 3._
million. That's a healthy 6._
month supply at the current sales
pace, the lowest level in three
years.

Pets sleep a lot during the day d dogs

NMost dogs like to stretch out on rectangular beds that keep their shape, /ith

She reco%%ends a polar-fleece, futonstyle bed by Bo/ser NthatJs tufted, so the

Pet beds should be placed a/ay fro%

Willia% Weg%an, the photographer best

“Husky 2, Husky 2, are you
OK?”
“This is Husky 2, yes — I7m
alright,” replied Eggers, in a
strangely calm voice.
The convoy came to an abrupt
halt, as other lead elements
deployed to provide security, and
an Explosives Ordnance Disposal
unit traveling with the convoy
moved in to examine the explosion
site and determine if there were
other IEDs present. Eggers exited
his disabled Husky, and moved
towards the rear of the column,
where he was met and examined by
a medic.
Over the next few hours, EOD
personnel cleared the area and the
convoy7s wrecker team recovered
the damaged Husky. It was time to
move on.
67) hi:% again
Within a half hour, a second
explosion rocked the convoy.
One of the IG-31 MIAP vehicles belonging to the combat logistics patrol struck another IED with
its anti-mine rollers, disabling them
but leaving the vehicle intact.
Once more the convoy halted
and began what had become a
well-rehearsed drill: recovery of
the vehicle after EOD gave the allclear sign. Again — fortunately —
there were no injuries.
“Going to be one of those days,”
Dufek said dryly.
In just over four hours, the convoy had traveled less than five kilometers.
There was still a long way to go.
For the next several hours, the
crews would be subjected not only
to the dangers imposed by insurgents but also to the physical abuse
of their own protective vehicles,
which they knew were at the mercy
of the primitive Afghan infrastructure.
It was nearly 2 a.m. when the
convoy rolled into its destination
— almost 14 hours after it had left
its base near Sharan. Long ordered
his vehicles into a clearing near the
base fuel point then told his men to
dismount.
The initial plan was to billet his
Guardsmen in tents, but 30 minutes
later he and Dornbusch returned
with bad news: There were only
two available beds in the entire
compound. So the men would
either have to sleep outside in the
2X-degree night air or in their vehicles.
There was no complaining, bickering, or discussion. Grateful just to
be stopped for the night, the entire
convoy had, within 1X minutes, set
up cots and sleeping bags near their
vehicles, or had retired inside a
vehicle, and fallen sound asleep.
Aeading ,ac= ho+e
Crews awakened about 7 a.m.
and began packing their cots and
stowing their gear for the return
trip. Hungry and tired, many headed first for a nearby chow hall, then
back to their bivouac area where
they proceeded to ready their vehicles — and themselves — for the
long trip home.
Gathered in groups of two, three
or four, some of the men chatted
and laughed with each other while
others tended to their duties, performed personal hygiene or loaded
crew-served weapons. Like a welloiled machine, the veteran
Guardsmen were prepared, fueled
and ready to leave well before the
planned departure time.
Long gathered his men together
for a final pre-mission brief,
informing them the convoy would
likely take an alternate route on the
way back to base, in order to hope-
!edne%day, )ece+,er 20, 2009
fully avoid any more “trouble on
the way home.”
It was a decision that was popular with the crews.
“Sounds good to me,” said
Dornbusch, as he and his crewmates climbed into their Buffalo
and got ready to get back on the
road.
Boring i% good
The convoy7s route took it
through a number of communities,
both large and small, all of which
were crowded with people, cars
and animals during the daylight.
In the larger cities especially,
vendors on the street peddled fresh
fruits, vegetables and nuts, while
shopkeepers hawked everything
from clothing to cell phones.
However, the trip quickly
devolved into a tedious, bumpy
affair, the minutes passing into
hours, often without a sound from
anyone in the convoy. Crews still
sore and tired from the day before
seemed too worn out even to converse. Yet the crews were well
aware of the nature of their missions — long, tedious stretches of
time punctuated by brief, but terrifying, moments of enemy contact.
Still, boring was better, because
it meant no danger and, more
importantly, no delays.
“I7m just hoping we can get back
without any problems today,”
Weber proffered.
“That7d be best,” Dufek seconded.
If only the enemy would cooperate.
Con:ac: Di:h :he ene+y
About mid-afternoon the convoy
moved into a TAI — target area of
interest, or an area where there had
been enemy activity in the recent
past — and crews recognized it
right away.
Suddenly, there was no activity
in the villages. There were no ven-
dors in sight, no children, no traffic.
Nothing but an eerie absence of
life.
“Sure did get quite around here,”
Dufek said.
“I know,” Dornbusch answered,
recognizing a phenomenon that
occurs sometimes right before an
enemy strikes.
Several minutes later, as if to
accentuate the drama, the convoy7s
rear element reported that it was
taking sporadic small arms fire
from a nearby location.
“We have identified where the
rounds are coming from,” said the
commander of the rear gun truck.
“Iequest permission to return fire,
over.”
Permission was granted, and a few
seconds later, the rear gun truck sent
its own rounds “downrange” to the
site of the attack.
There was no more enemy fire
after the American crew opened up.
The short-lived attack was over,
almost before it began. Though the
attack was ineffectual, it made the
point, once again, that no matter
where the crews went, there was
always risk.
“Let7s move on,” urged Long,
knowing the convoy had several
more hours of travel left before getting back.
7nd of :he road and
:he day
Darkness had fallen by the time
the worn-out and battered convoy
snaked its way through the ECP leading back to their base. Long radioed
in that his convoy had arrived. The
Buffalo crew visibly relaxed.
As the MIAPs rolled in, Dufek
dialed up a Dixie Chicks song called
“Travelin7 Soldier” on his MP3 player:
For these traveling South Dakota
Guardsman, the end of this day
indeed meant they were one day
closer to returning home.

Groucho Marx said, “Time flies
like an arrow. Fruit flies like a
banana.”
At the bridge table, time flies
because you are so occupied with
the game. But timing may also be
important. On many deals, if you
play the cards in the correct order,
you make your contractF if you
mistime, you go down.
Well, in what order would you
play your cards hereT You are in

T7u-%day, )e*9 24, 2009
In the year ahead, there is nothing wrong with driving yourself a bit
harder in order to get what you
want. But donAt forget to take a little
time to smell the roses along the way, especially when
finding time for those you love.
;APRI;?R@ A)e*9 22-Jan9 19D — ItAs imperative that
you and other family members all have input into the
decisions affecting the dayAs festivities. You could unwittingly overlook something important.
AEUARIUG AJan9 20-Fe,9 19D — Try not to ask something of someone that you wouldnAt ask of yourself. See
things from the otherAs perspective, and understand why
he or she canAt comply.
PIG;EG AFe,9 20-Ma-*7 20D — Subdue temptations to
unnecessarily spend way beyond your means. There is
never a good reason to go heavily into debt for something
you can completely do without.
ARIEG AMa-*7 21-AK-LM 19D — In order for things to
run smoothly, it will be important to let others know your
specific agenda beforehandF otherwise, someone could
unknowingly upset your plans.
TAURUG AAK-LM 20-May 20D — With conversations
running rampant, it might be far too easy to speak before
you think. Guard what you say and to whom you say it, or
you could unwittingly start a firestorm.
NEMI@I AMay 21-June 20D — Have a good time and
enjoy yourself with family and friends, but try to so without
putting more strain on your wallet. ItAs time to start plugging up all the holes.
four spades. West leads the trump
seven.
After the strong and artificial
two-club opening, the weak and
artificial two-diamond response,
and the natural and forcing twospade rebid, North shows a very
poor hand (0-4 points) with an artificial two no-trump or three clubs,
according to partnership agreement. (Each has pluses and
minuses. Discuss them with your
partner.)
Over three spades, South might
bid three no-trump, describing his
5-4-2-2 distribution. But North
would pass and the contract would
fail if the defenders take four diamonds and one club.
Since you have three top losers
(two diamonds and one club), you
must avoid also conceding a
heart. After taking the first trick in
your hand, perhaps you were
tempted to cash the heart ace and
king, then to ruff the heart 10 on
the board. If so, what would you
do nextT
You are stranded in the dummy.
You can play, say, a club, but
West can win and give his partner
a heart ruff.
To avoid being stuck like that,
take all three top hearts before
ruffing the 10.
;A@;ER AJune 21-JuMy 22D — Count to 10 before
responding angrily to anyone who does something or
says something that ticks you off. Even though the person may be way out of line, donAt ruin your day over it.
LE? AJuMy 20-Aug9 22D — The end results of the dayAs
festivities will be strongly influenced by your attitude and
behavior. If youAre too much of a nitpicker or too negative
over things, expect the day to be a downer.
PIRN? AAug9 20-GeKQ9 22D — No one can impose
upon your good nature unless you let it happen. DonAt
hesitate to say no when someone asks more of you than
you feel comfortable to handle.
LIRRA AGeKQ9 20-?*Q9 20D — In order to find a way
where both you and your mate can reach an agreement
concerning your plans for the day, each might have to
compromise. Be cooperative and harmonious.
G;?RPI? A?*Q9 24-@oT9 22D — This could be the
wrong day to try something new and complicated that is
totally untested by you or anyone you know. Frayed tempers are all youAre likely to produce.
GANITTARIUG A@oT9 20-)e*9 21D — DonAt be openhanded with something you collectively own with another,
believing itAs OK to loan it out. That person might have big
plans for the loaned item, making things Suite difficult for
him or her.

SHOPLIFTING 5ontinued fro+ 3a4e ;
ceptab'e one,, he said, adding that peop'e are o4ten re'eased 4rom prison without any means o4 support, 'eading them
bac9 into crime.
,What I=m against is the way society
has become e>er more com4ortab'e with
the peop'e at the >ery bottom, and b'inded to their needs,, he said.
He said shop'i4ting cou'd he'p peop'e
who are 'ega''y entit'ed to go>ernment
we'4are bene4its but ha>e the bene4its
de'ayed 4or bureaucratic reasons.
This approach was Auic9'y reBected by
members o4 the British Retai'
Consortium, a prominent trade organiFation trying to reduce the4t.
,It=s the Bob o4 our we'4are system,
which retai'ers support with the bi''ions
they pay each year in taG, to he'p >u'nerab'e peop'e,, said spo9esman Richard
Dodd. ,There are no eGcuses 4or stea'ing.,
The North Yor9shire Po'ice a'so condemned Jones= approach as counterproducti>e because peop'e a'ready in margina' conditions wou'd 4ind themse'>es
in troub'e with the 'aw i4 they resorted
to shop'i4ting.
,First and 4oremost, shop'i4ting is a
crimina' o44ense, and to Busti4y this
course o4 action under any circumstances is high'y irresponsib'e,, a
po'ice statement read. ,Turning or
returning to crime wi'' on'y ma9e matters worse, that is a guarantee.,
Peop'e in need shou'd turn to charitab'e organiFations and go>ernment
agencies 4or he'p, rather than ta9e matters into their own hands, the po'ice
said.
,To do this wou'd ma9e the downward spira' e>en more rapid, both on an
indi>idua' basis and on society as a
who'e,, the statement said.
