Total Defence Week
By Run Xin and Min Seo
To commemorate Singapore’s fall during the Japanese
occupation, Singapore marks 15th February annually as the Total
Defence Day. We have this special day to remind us that Singapore
would not fall into the hands of others again.
There are 5 pillars in Total Defence, namely, Military Defence, Civil Defence, Economic Defence, Social Defence and Psychological Defence.
This year, in our school, 13 February kick started our Total Defence Week. In conjunction with the week, there was also a carnival put up by the teachers and CLIMB mentors. There were many
interesting activities set up in the different stations for us to
take part in. Many of us visited all the stations.

Citizenship &
Responsibility
All hands up in the air, to show the 5 pillars of Total Defence.
Total Defence Week (from Page 1)
There was also a comic drawing competition, and several nice comics
were chosen by the teachers and
showcased to the whole school during
assembly. They were wonderful.
There were a few pieces done by our
classmates that were displayed.
Similar to previous years, a fire
drill was supposed to be carried out
during the Total Defence week. However, this year, it was postponed due
to inclement weather.
On the last day of the Total
Defence Week, there was an assembly programme. Our teachers put up
a skit on Fire Drill. It was about two
pupils who played with birthday candles and ended up causing a fire outbreak in school. We learnt from the
skit that fire is a “good servant but
a bad master”.
After the skit, Mrs Charlene
Chua shared with us the Dos and
Don’ts during a fire drill.

LENT
by Melissa
Lent is here! The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ of his suffering and sacrifice, life, death, burial and resurrection.
During Lent, many Christians fast or give up luxuries as a penitence! The purpose is to
set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ of his suffering and sacrifice, life, death,
burial and resurrection.
In school, we are thought about Lent by going to the nearby St Jose's Church to observe the 12 Stations Of The Cross that commemorates Christ Our Lord carrying the
Cross starting from his suffering, torture and finally Death.
This event, with it's customs, are observed by Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists,
Presbyterians and Anglicans.
" I felt sad after Jesus died with
such terrible pain from the
soldiers."
Marianne Lai from 4 Peace
commented.
It is a time where you think about
what Jesus went through and you
also appreciate what Jesus had done
to save us. I feel that i should make
small sacrifices and help others."
-Mrs Julian .

SPCA
by
Respect
A few weeks ago, an SPCA
volunteer, Miss Sebastian, came to our
school. She presented a talk on respecting animals.
She shared stories about people in
Singapore abusing their pets. Miss Sebastian told us really sad stories about
pets being abandoned when they were injured.
At the end of the talk, she brought out a cute little kitten from a cage
and told the whole school to be quiet as the kitten would be scared.
I have learnt that the SPCA is an important organization that helps to
rescue abandoned, injured and abused animals. Miss Sebastian also told us that
if we wanted to know more about the SPCA, we could log on to their website at
www.spca.org.sg/ .

Sungei Buloh Trip
On the 21st February, the CAC members went for an adventure trail at the Sungei Buloh
Wetland Reserve. The trail was conducted by National Geographic and Nikon. Below are
some of the members’ account of their experience.
“The experience at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve was enjoyable.
It was the first time I got to hold a DSLR camera. I took pictures
of squirrels, plants and insects. I used to zoom-in to take pictures
from far distances. I also learnt to take pictures from different
angles. Besides photography, I also learnt many plant facts from
the guide. I will use the skills I learnt to take more wonderful photographs in the future.” -
Min Seo
“I have learnt to
hold a DSLR in a
proper manner and
write good captions
for the pictures I
took.”
“I love the scenery. I
got very close to nature
and the fungis along
the path really caught
my attention.”
- Francine
- Joelle
“I saw many mudskippers and
mangrove plants. The trail was
fun and exciting as I learnt to
capture pictures of nature
using the DSLR.”
