THE QJC SISTERHOOD The 2015 Annual Oneg Shabbos Series Members of the shul and friends from the community were treated to three outstanding speakers at this year's Oneg Shabbat series. The topic was Tefilla and each speaker gave her perspective on an important well-known tefilla. Professor Neva Goldstein Hellman gave an excellent analysis of the Tefilla L'Medinat Yisrael, the Prayer for the State of Israel. Neva discussed the controversy about its authorship, how the prayer is based on ideas expressed in Torah and exactly what the prayer requests of Hashem and its hope for future redemption. The following week, Jacqueline Turk spoke about the beautiful final chapter of Mishlei, the famous Eishet Chayil. Jackie spoke about the various midrashim connected with the poem, the other places in Tanach where the term Eishet Chayil or Anshei Chayil is used and its meaning each time. Jackie concluded with how each of us has the ability to be an Eishet Chayil in the way we conduct our lives. Finally, the third speaker, Vera Buniak, gave an inspiring talk on the Shma prayer. Vera spoke about the importance of Shma as a statement of faith and how, by saying the prayer with intense concentration, we accept Hashem's role as our King. Vera explained the several mitzvot included in the tefila, and its central role in the daily life of each Jew. Each lecture drew a large crowd and everyone walked away inspired and with new insights. We thank Honey Berger, Sisterhood President, for keeping this popular series going year after year, and Judy Silberberg who helps recruit speakers. A special thanks to the loyal committee who buys the refreshments, sets up and cleans up each week. The Oneg Shabbat Series is truly an event we all look forward to each year. The proceedings were introduced by Gedalyah Shatz, QJC President. After the Mincha prayers, our Morah D'Asrah, Rabbi Simcha Hopkovitz, along with Rabbi Yossi Mendelson of Congregation Machane Chodosh, recited special tfilot in honor of the occasion. Then came time for our special guest to address the congregation. He spoke about Yom Hazikaron and how we immediately go from sorrow to joy as Yom Haatzma'ut approaches. After a short speech, he opened the floor for questions from the audience for a forty five minute period. The evening concluded with Herb Schonhaut, leading a very festive Maariv service, which was followed by a delicious reception of different Israeli delicacies, in our Shul lobby. Composed in Aramaic by Rabbi Meir ben Yitzchak in 11th century Germany, Akdamus is perhaps Judaism’s most beloved piyut. Interestingly, Akdamus is chanted responsively, the chazzan reciting two verses and then the congregation reciting the next two. It would seem that this responsive style of Akdamus, which serves as an introductory piyut to the Giving in the Torah, contains an important idea about the very nature of the Torah. The joint recitation symbolizes the need to study and pursue Torah, together, as a team. The message being that success in Torah study and Torah endeavors is achieved when done jointly, as chavrusas. I believe that such is the message of the Queens Jewish Center as well. The sounds of joint Torah study, Tefillah, and Chessed that reverberate throughout our building and community are the same as the Akdamus piyut. The teamwork, the sense of togetherness, and unity that are the crux of Akdamus, is indeed the hallmark of all that we do in the Queens Jewish Center. May we continue to produce beautiful notes of ruchniyus that are heard throughout our neighborhood.
