Although change takes place all the time, at the end of a school year is most visible. With the grade 8’s completing registration for ‘high school’ and grade 12’s getting ready for their final diplomas and graduation plus staffing changes for the 2016-2017 school year; change is part of life. Ms Otto who started her career at Hilltop in 1989, is moving to Spruce Grove to become the principal of Spruce Grove Composite High School. Ms Otto has been a huge part of the staff and will be missed for her love of teaching English, making it through two renovations at Hilltop and of course part of the administration team. Mr. Egbert Stang will be retiring this year after being principal of Hilltop for two years. Hilltop would like to thank Mr. Stang for continuously seeing the positive in people, listening to their story and doing what is right by them. Best of luck to Miss Swerda as she becomes part of the Onoway High School staff to facilitate the Outreach program and RAP. Miss Swerda has put in countless hours into the planning of teachers’ convention so we can obtain professional development to work with students so they can be the best they can be. Mrs. Rosvold is off to Africa in the summer and will not be returning for the next school year. Mrs. Rosvold’s laughter will be missed as will her dedication to the Humanitarian Club. At this time, a huge Thank You to all of our community partners, volunteers and parents. It does take a village to raise a child. To the staff, thank you for all the things you do to provide our students with a quality education. Your hard work is appreciated and we know the positive benefits for all those who walk through the halls of Hilltop High School. Change is inevitable. Assistant Principal Lesia Hleck Student Art We are proud to announce that our Hilltop Student Council has raised $500.00 to donate to Fort McMurray. Hilltop Jr./Sr. High School is now on Facebook! It examines healthy and unhealthy peer romantic relationships, focusing on dispelling stereotypes and building both communication and prevention skills. It is intended for youth ages twelve to eighteen. This program helps young people identify: · healthy dating relationships and supporting behaviours · what makes a dating relationship abusive · consent, protection and reporting procedures · where to find support and community resources The workshop reviews the legal definitions and ramifications of physical and sexual assaults. Written scenarios, group work and videos support this information and identify warning signs, such as emotional mistreatment. We are thrilled that Wellspring's Public Educators will be bringing the HYR program to our grade 9 students on June 6th and 7th. Kindergarten Visits Cosmetology Science 14 learns about the human body while making edible cells. VOLUME 7, ISSUE 9 Page 8 Grad Message: Wow! Where did the year go? By the time you read this, Grad 2016 is only 25 days away! Please note the following information as it will help make Graduation smoother for everyone: 1) Grads need to have both Grad forms in to Ms. Otto as they contain slightly different information which is used for yearbook and for the Grad Ceremony. 2) Grads should check the Grad Board to ensure their names are on the Potential Grad List as this is the best way to know if they have handed in their forms and if they are in good standing. This list is updated for every Monday. 3) In order to qualify for Graduation Ceremonies, students MUST be in a position where they have met Alberta Education's High School Diploma requirements including obtaining 100 credits. As such if a student is not passing a required course before the diploma exam, they WILL NOT be participating in the Grad Ceremony. 4) Students who qualify and wish to participate in the Graduation Ceremony must attend the Grad Rehearsal on Thursday, June 23 at 2:00 pm. Please meet in the school gym. Be sure to book this date off work. We will be issuing Caps, Gowns and Tassels at the end of the rehearsal so they will be available for morning photos on Grad Day. We will also have an information handout for you that day. 5) Participants in the Ceremony need to be at the school by 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 25. We have to take the first of the group photos at this time. 6) Grad Ceremony Clean-up is scheduled for Monday, June 27 at 1:00 pm. Please meet at the arena at this time. VOLUME 7, ISSUE 9 Page 9 We are in to the last month of school for this school year, let’s make it a productive one and get those unfinished courses successfully completed. Students who want to earn Foods credits are encouraged to submit their recipes and ingredient lists in a timely manner to ensure the module is completed in full before the end of the school year. Our Wing-OFF on March 17 was a success with a variety of flavorful wing sauces and spices. Samantha Fialski was declared the winner with her tasty taco sauce. The students had so much fun that we hope to make the Wing-Off an annual event. Students who are taking Physical Education 10, 20 or 30 and need the teacher directed hours are encouraged to attend to take part in our PE program. Thanks to Jill and Tumara from Well Spring who presented on Healthy Relationships and thanks to Kyra from FCLP and Ryan from Caniff for spearheading a wellness group for the students. The students were really engaged, learned a lot and had fun. We would like to thank the Community Lunch Box Program for allowing the students the opportunity to prepare their own hot meals at least once a week, as well as providing other healthy alternatives for snacks and lunches. In addition, we want to thank Freddy’s 2 for 1 Pizza for supplying lasagna for the students. Students are encouraged to attend often, and to get teacher help in order to make the required progress to have all courses successfully completed before the end of the school year. With that being said, all course work for diploma courses and PE is due Monday, June 6. Storefront will host its year end celebration and Awards on Thursday, June 9, 2016, to recognize the students’ hard work and accomplishments for the year. Reminder to all students who have outstanding resources to please return all course resources back to Hilltop’s front office or to Hilltop Storefront School ASAP. Students who wish to register for summer school can do so by contacting Hilltop High School at (780) 778 2446. Finally, we would like to wish our students and staff a safe and fun summer, and we hope to see you in the fall. Storefront Hours: Monday ~ Thursday Phone 780.778.5865 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Student Council News This month student council has been involved in a few important activities. By far, the best activity was putting on a taco-in-a-bag lunch for the students to buy on May 13. 150 students and staff bought this delectable lunch! We also have been selling freezies to the students at noon hour as a partnership with the Hilltop Bistro. Selling freezies and taco-in-a-bag proved very successful and we were able to donate the profits of $500.00 to Fort McMurray. At the end of May, several student council members volunteered at the Whitecourt Children's Festival. As student council wraps up for the year, we want to thank the students for all their hard work and dedication. This is really a top notch group of students who go above and beyond to ensure that Hilltop has lots of extra and fun activities for the whole school. We were honoured to get to know each and every one of you and we are astounded by your willingness to make Hilltop “A Great Place To Learn And More”!! Thank you!! Mrs. Sanderson and Ms. Koudelka VOLUME 7, ISSUE 9 Page 10 Message from Miss Otto Hello, Hilltop! I wanted to thank all present and past Charger students, parents and staff for the past 27 years. You are more than a job, a school, a community-- you have become my second family. I have enjoyed playing a small part in your lives and I am thankful to you for letting me do so. All the best to each of you as you move forward in your life's journey. Remember always your Charger Pride; I know I will. Good-bye, Hilltop, Cheryl Otto First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) This is the last article for this school term, and it always amazes me how quickly the year goes by. It is time for our students to pursue scholarships, awards and bursaries that they may qualify for, in preparation for the year ahead. Those of you going on to post-secondary, I wish you all the success in the world; I know you will strive to reach your goals. This year I have seen many accomplishments by our students that have made me very proud. We have aspiring musicians, mechanics, artists, millwrights, and the list goes on… basically anything you can dream of achieving our Aboriginal students are pursuing! The Indigenous youth in our school are Chargers and Leaders, and your determination is commendable. There will be approximately 25 FNMI students in the 2016 grad class, which is very encouraging, as our numbers increase every year! I wish you all health and happiness during the summer months, and remember: Treat the Earth and all that dwell therein with respect. Mrs. Smith-Tomke FNMI Liaison Worker Helpful Hint from the Family Community Liaison Program (FCLP) Creating a cohesive family has many benefits, yet it can be difficult to do. Here are some tips on how to create a family that sticks together through thick and thin: 1. Stay connected. The importance of spending quality time with your children cannot be expressed enough. Having down time and just ‘hanging out’ with your children allows them to know that you genuinely care about them, and helps to lay the foundation of a cohesive family. 2. Develop family rituals. Weekly family meetings, Sunday brunch, Wednesday lunch dates with dad, Friday evening swimming with mom, Christmas Eve traditions or annual Halloween costume making are often things that children look forward to. Create something that works for your family, but make it routine. These activities allow the opportunity to build connections. 3. Resist the impulse to overschedule. Sunday night Tae Kwon Do, Monday afternoon ballet, Tuesday morning piano, Wednesday after school soccer practice, Thursday evening gymnastics and Friday night volleyball may be WAY too much for a family to handle. It’s important for kids to keep busy and participate in activities they love, but down time with family is just as important. Try to stick to only a few activities per child; and if your schedule is jam packed, make sure to schedule the free time. Sometimes an evening spent drinking hot chocolate in pajamas while watching a family movie is what everyone needs. 4. Limit time on electronics. Unlimited time using electronics can create an addiction in both adults and children. Encourage other activities, such as reading, writing, crafting hobbies, or baking. Having everyone create something together as a team helps children develop a sense of accomplishment and pride. The Family Community Liaison Program (FCLP) provides individual counselling and family support. For more information about the program or the referral process, feel free to contact Kyria or Kateryna at the FCLP office at 780-778-8755.
