President’s Message
Spring is finally here, and we can put the long winter behind us. PCA is
quickly approaching, and in just a few months we will be together again in
Salisbury. This year is our 75th Anniversary Show, our Diamond Anniversary.
The club has grown and changed but still has the same purpose, the protection
and enjoyment of our unique and wonderful breed.
In this newsletter, Glenna Carlson, our hard-working Show Chairman, will
provide an update on the events for our 75th anniversary show. As many already may know, we have made changes in the way reservations and items are
ordered for the National. We have put PayPal on the PCA web site for your
convenience. We also have this year, on a trial basis, paid reserved seating. A
comment box at the National will everyone a chance to give their opinion on
this. The board will evaluate this plan after comments are read.
We have made a request for membership in the Master National Retriever
Club. This should be a help to our performance events. We are fortunate to
have Joyce Carelli and her committee, who work hard to make the trials so
successful. It is really something to see the Poodles working in the field. I
hope everyone plans to attend the hunting trials, WC and WCX. This year will
be the first time we will award medallions to participants who meet the requirements.
This PCA is a week full of events, starting on Saturday and ending on Friday.
I hope you all are planning to attend. Anyone who would like to volunteer to
help with any of the PCA events, please contact Glenna Carlson or me.
Our show this year is dedicated to Annie Clark. Annie was such a landmark in
the Breed. Let us joyfully celebrate her legacy to Poodles and to the sport of
purebred dogs as a part of our 75th Anniversary show. I know that Annie was
looking forward to this show and, in spite of her absence, her spirit will be
with us as we enjoy Poodles in all of their versatility and beauty.
We welcome to the board Mr. Del Dahl as Publicity Chairman, and he will be
writing the AKC Gazette Column. Del has assumed Mrs. Clark’s seat on the
board.
Enjoy your wonderful Poodles, and I look forward to seeing you and them at
the National.

Spotlight on a P.C.A. Member
This edition of the Poodle Papers shines it’s spotlight
on Sandy Marshall.
Sandy was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up
mostly in D.C. and Chevy Chase, Md.
As a child, Sandy enjoyed drawing, sewing, and ballet
dancing until she was 14. Sandy grew up with Beagles,
Cocker Spaniels, and an English Setter. These were pets,
but she doted on them. Sandy also loved horses, too
but, being a city kid, didn't get as much opportunity to
ride them as she would have liked. Sandy always had a
love of the outdoors and was a Girl Scout. She loved
camping, hiking, and swimming, and used to go to camp
most summers when she was a kid in Cape Cod, Mass.
Sandy has been married for 45 years and has three
grown children, one daughter and two sons, and three
grandchildren
Sandy is a retired travel agent and taught travel classes
at a travel school for several years. Before that, Sandy
had raised her three children. She was a Girl Scout
Leader for senior high school students and a Cub Scout
leader. Before that, Sandy worked in a local department store's advertising department doing copy and
proofreading.
Sandy now lives in the Washington, D.C., suburb of
Colesville, Md.
Sandy got her first Poodle, a white mini, when she was
newly married in 1963. She had always loved Poodles
but had not been able to have one before then. Later, in
1974, she got her first Standard Poodle from a fellow
club member, Mary Lebet, who had bred a beautiful
litter out of her Wycliffe bitch by Ch Rimskittle Right
On. Mary got her involved in showing and sponsored
her joining the Washington Poodle Club, our local Affiliate Club. It was at this time that Sandy met Anne
Rogers Clark, who was an honorary member of the
Washington Poodle Club. She was a friend and mentor
to Sandy and the Washington Poodle Club for many
years.
Sandy and her husband started out by training two
Standard poodle In Obedience with her friends and
mentors Ken and Nan Nagler. She did obedience trials
in a few matches, but never got a title on any of her
dogs. She found herself constantly drifting over to the
breed ring to observe and wishing she could have a
dog to compete with there, so she bred her Right On
daughter, and out of this mating came her first champion bitch. She, too, was bred and her daughter was
finished, and so it went on down the line, breeding a
little and finishing a dog or two. The Standards have
been her love ever since.
Those most influential to Sandy in her start in Poodles
were Mary Lebet, Eleanor Gardner, and the members
of the Washington Poodle Club. Sandy has been a
member now for 32 years. She has co-owned and cobred several bitches with Connie Rodgers, a fellow
WPC member. She taught her a wealth of information
about breeding and grooming. She owes a great deal
of what she knows now to her long association with
Connie and her Denevillette Standards. Sandy has been
involved in Standards for thirty-two years now.
Other hobbies or interests other than Poodles. Sandy
enjoys traveling when she can. She also loves the opera as well as a little gardening. Currently she and her
husband are remodeling and redecorating their 45-year
old home, which has become quite a hobby so far.
Sandy belongs to a book club and the local health club
where she works out, swims, and does yoga five days a
week.
The kennel name that Sandy bred and shows under is
Sancourt
Whats in a name?
How did you come up with your kennel name you use?
That question will be asked to breeders in each variety
for the Poodle Papers . This issue we have asked
Maryln Brooks, Anomar Miniature Poodles -My
Kennel name is ANOMAR......AN for my daughter's
first name "ANnette" The "O" comes from my
husband's middle initial "Owen" , and the MAR comes
from the first three letters of my name "MARyln".
Hence...ANOMAR
Sandy Marshall, Sancourt - The kennel name that I
breed and shows under is Sancourt which was a combination of my first name Sandy and my husband's
first name Courtenay.
