July 31, 2016 - Our Lady of Perpetual Help
18TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 31, 2016
If today you hear
His voice, harden
not your hearts.

seek, share, rejoice - pastor's reflection
Dear Parishioners,
The month of July finds most of
us in the midst of summer rhythms.
Things are a bit more relaxed and we
all try to find some escapes whether
it is getting lost in a wonderful novel,
stopping by the Dairy Bar or a
backyard BBQ.
Father Jerry Boland
Thoughts on
Today's Gospel
In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers
a warning to those who pursue
leisure and pleasure as their
goal in life without concern for
the poor and less fortunate. He
tells the parable of the wealthy
landowner who, upon yielding
an exceptionally profitable
harvest one year, determines
that he will live the rest of
his days in relaxation; to eat,
drink and be merry. God calls
the miser a “fool” and lets him
know that his greed and selfindulgence will not bring him
the security he seeks. Good
stewards acknowledge that
the money and possessions
entrusted to them are to be
used to further the mission of
Jesus Christ. This week let
us reflect on our own daily
consumption habits. Do we
spend money on articles that
make us better ambassadors
of Christ? Does our personal
lifestyle bring “good news to
the poor” (Luke 4:18)?

July is marked by wonderful
celebrations of some great saints.
In July we venerate the memory
of one of the newest Saints, Junipero
Serra, canonized by Pope Francis
during his visit to the U.S.A.,
We recall the first martyred
apostle, St. James and last week
we remembered St. Joachim and
St. Ann, the grandparents of Jesus.
This Sunday is the Feast of St.
Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the
Jesuits. (Well nobody is perfect. Only
kidding!) St Ignatius looms large in
the communion of saints. The Jesuits
have made a profound impact on
the world through their ministry of
evangelization and education.
Many of our young people have
been formed in Ignatian Spirituality
as students of Loyola Academy and
St. Ignatius College Prep. We are
blessed by the presence of Jesuits
who minister here. Of course we
rejoice in the ministry of Fr. Paddy
Tyrrell, S.J., as he celebrates his 50th
year of priesthood. We are also
blessed by Fr. John Foley, S.J., who
assists with our weekday masses and
just celebrated the 70th anniversary
of his entering the Jesuit community!
We always look forward to celebrating
mass with Fr. Pat McGrath, S.J., who
is the president of Loyola Academy.
Fr. Matt Gamber, S.J., is the son of
Ruth and Mark Gamber and led a
group of young adults to World Youth
Day in Krakow. I also have to give a
shout out to Pope Francis, who is a
Jesuit. I saw a banner at St. Ignatius
College Prep after his election which
July 31, 2016 • olphglenview.org
read, “If you need someone for a
tough job, hire a Jesuit, the
College of Cardinals did!”
We will be hosting Archbishop Cupich
Monday evening. He will be speaking
to folks from several parishes on his
vision for the Church of Chicago. This
prayer service will be launching the
sixth wave of the diocesan capital
campaign, “To Teach Who Christ
is”. Our parish is part of this group
of parishes. You will be hearing more
about the campaign in the coming
weeks. I am deeply grateful for our
Co-Chairs for the campaign, Bob and
Connie Hicks, Dave and Dawn Ludden
and Colin and Carol Gubbins. We will
be forming a committee and beginning
an outreach to every parishioner to be
part of building a strong church and
even more vital parish for the future.
This week there was an outstanding
article in Crain’s Chicago Business
entitled, “A Catholic Reformation” by
Bridget Sweeney that featured our
former associate Fr. Dave Dowdle who
is the pastor of St. John of the Cross
parish in Western Springs. The article
presents some of the real challenges
that Archbishop Cupich is leading us
to address in his initiative, “Renew My
Church”. Fr. Dowdle pastors a parish
very similar to ours. He speaks about
both the challenges and blessings
of this moment, reflecting on our
mission. Every parish is going to have
to face the challenges of fewer priests
and the need to prepare ourselves in
new ways to proclaim the Good News.
Set your TV’s to Jeopardy. Our own
Susan Logan, recently Chair Person
of the Finance Council, will be
competing in an upcoming episode.
She will be great. Hint for $1000, the
category, Greatest Parishes in the
USA; answer, What is OLPH! (this may
be the daily double).
Have a blessed week,
Fr. Jerry Boland

RCIA
EVOLVE Adult Education Ministry presents Nancy Tuchman
Living on Our Fragile Planet:
Ecological Sustainability and Global Climate Change
Saturday, August 13, 9:30 - 11:30 am in McDonnell Hall
The long human relationship with the Earth has come to what is likely
its most precarious point ever, but there is some hope. Ecologist and
sustainability expert, Nancy Tuchman, will discuss the growing threat
of global climate change including the crucial impact on the earth's
closed system water supply But she will also sketch some steps that
human beings may begin to take that can make a difference. Insights
from Pope Francis' Laudato Si may offer some guidance in this
important ethical challenge to every species survival.
About the Presenter: Nancy Tuchman
is Vice Provost and Professor of Aquatic
Biology at Loyola University, Chicago
and serves as Director of the Institute
of Environmental Sustainabilty at Loyola.
Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have
unknowingly entertained angels. Hebrews 13:2
Be a Greeter/Usher
Help us to be a welcoming community with smiles and outstretched arms
as we greet all who enter our doors, be they friends or strangers says our
Engagement Prayer . . .
. . . and Pope Francis says The Church is called to be the house of the
Father, with doors always wide open . . . so that if someone, moved by the
Spirit, comes there looking for God, he or she will not find a closed door.
Join our Greeter/Usher ministry, which is open to all ages as well as entire
families. Serve as often as you would like, from every week to once a
month. Duties include:
•Greeting
•Helping
seat people.
•Passing
•Tidying
all as they enter our worship space.
the baskets at the offertory.
the church after Mass.
• Answering
questions.
•Welcoming
everyone who enters the doors of
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
All you need to have is a smile!

Liturgy Assistant, mandre@olphchurch-il.org
The Rite of Christian Initiation
of Adults (RCIA) is a process
of welcoming others into our
Catholic family. RCIA is a journey
of faith through which persons
join or complete their initiation
into the Catholic Church. RCIA
is a program intended for:
1) Anyone who hasn’t been baptized
2) Anyone who has been baptized in a
different faith community but wishes
to join the Catholic Church
3) Anyone who has been baptized
in the Catholic Church but hasn’t
received other sacraments
4) Parishioners who want to learn more
about the Church and share their
faith with others
Although RCIA is open to the whole
parish, it is specially aimed at those
who are new to the faith and those who
will be received into full communion
with the Church. Those who wish
to be part of this journey of faith will
learn more about Catholic doctrine,
share their faith experiences with one
another, be edified by the value of the
Christian life, and be instructed in the
manner we worship as a Church.
Our parish will soon begin a new
journey into the faith for those
interested in joining our Catholic
Family. We will begin our sessions on
the 13th of September 2016. We all
have that one friend who is open to the
wonders of Catholic life. The one thing
that a friend may need is an invitation,
so be a good apostle and reach out to
those on the periphery.
Consider too whether you feel called
to join RCIA as a sponsor of a candidate
or just as a representative of our
Parish who walks with candidates
on their spiritual journey. Give it
some prayerful thought.

office or contact Fr. Isaac ilara@

seek, share, rejoice - sharing and human concerns
S.O.S. for summer hunger!
We have been duly distracted these summer months
and food donations have significantly dropped. Please
continue to support our on-going food drive as hunger
knows no vacation.
Your donation will mean so much to those who have so
little. Donations can be delivered to the church or Sharing
Room entries or delivered through the kids at the Sunday
offertory. God bless you for your generosity!!
Too busy to shop for the food drive?
We’ll do the shopping for you! Mail a donation made
out to the OLPH Needy Family Fund to Lou Marohn,
2132 Fir Street, Glenview. Food will be purchased in
case lots to stretch and maximize your donation.
Save the Date! September 8
We will be feeding the homeless who visit the Catholic
Charities soup kitchen in Des Plaines on Thursday,
September 8th. Contact Kathy Quinn, khquinn1944@
comcast.net, to participate or to make a donation to
offset the $400 cost for this meal. It takes both donors
and volunteers to make these visits happen.
School Supply Drive
Guild 24 is coordinating a drive for new school supplies
the weekends of August 13/14 through September
10/11. Drop off bins will be located in the church foyers
and convent porch.
Please support this important effort and enable needy
inner city and local families to send their children off to a
good start! Gift cards are also welcome; Staples, Target
and Walmart work best.
With sincere gratitude
