Senior Spotlight! - H.O.P.E. Safehouse
January 2010 H.O.P.E. Safehouse 1911 Taylor Avenue Racine, WI 53403 262.634.4571 Senior Spotlight! Won’t you please consider offering a final home for one of our needy seniors? They are safe in foster care, but have no real home to call their own. I’m not asking for you to do this for your lifetime…just whatever is left for one of these old souls. Sosie This sweet canine came to us from a high kill shelter, like so many others, a discarded family pet. We assume she had a decent home at one time as she is housetrained, has good house manners, and she has survived to be a senior. However, she has over 100 shotgun pellets throughout her body including many in her face. Why she ended up on death row at one of the animal control facilities is anyone’s guess. Perhaps her human was hospitalized and no family member wanted her. Maybe her human died. Then again it is possible that the person who had Sosie as a companion for so many years – simply didn’t care enough to see her through her senior years. Obviously the shotgun blasts did not finish her off as someone intended. Thirty four years of rescue has shown us thousands of irresponsible people who view their “beloved” pets more like inconvenient house guests once there are a few medical issues. Sosie has some arthritis; has had a short bout with irritable bowel, and at one point suffered a mild stroke. Through it all she has remained sweet and loving; happy for a pat on the head, a soft bed and soft words of love and acceptance. She is a kind and gentle old shepherd mix. Ashleigh This lovely feline survived the devastation that was Katrina. Like hundreds of others we rescued from the hurricane, we have no knowledge of her history. What we do know is that she lost whatever home she had and found refuge here in Wisconsin. Ashleigh was adopted relatively quickly from HOPE’s temporary shelter in the old Aldi’s building and all went pretty well until it was necessary to do dental work. We’re not entirely clear on the specifics but something went horribly wrong during the procedure and Ashleigh suffered permanent hearing loss and temporary neurological problems. Her inability to hear and difficulty with balance made her fearful and distrustful of her feline housemate. I’m not sure what, if anything was attempted to resolve the issues or adapt the environment. However, 4 years later she was returned to us by an individual other than the original adopter. It was indeed a challenge in the beginning as Ashleigh was intolerant of the other felines, yet 5 months later, she is doing very well. She will probably never be best of pals with the other cats but they all coexist pretty peacefully. She sits by my side while on the computer and thoroughly enjoys what little attention we can give her. She is quiet, demure, affectionate and a little frail in her older years. She adores small children but the day-to-day frenetic pace of toddlers might be too much for her. I wish she had her own humans; she deserves more than we in the office can offer her. hopesafehouse@gmail.com • www.hopesafehouse.org Ways to Help H.O.P.E. … Pick 'n Save Advantage WE CARE Program The primary way you can help is to put us out of business. Mailbag My Dad and Heidi flew this dog from Ohio to Racine today through the Paws and Pilots program. It was my Dad's first flight for them and he was thrilled to have a vet along. Dear H.O.P.E. Safehouse, ”Knicker” a.k.a. “ Henry” completed his puppy kindergarden. He did really well. Everyone says what a neat dog he is. Hi Lynn, Here is the picture of Hope and Mufin. Thanks, Darlene Lori Thank you for connecting us with such a great dog. Sincerely, Alicio Yezzi Season Greetings to all at H.O.P.E. Safehouse, Dear Lisa, Dodger is the newest member of my household. We got him as a rescue from Hope Safehouse in Racine. They don't know how old he was when found, hurt, at a gas station in Mississippi so they guess he's about two. He is healthy and we already tired him out today - so he's napping. I'm making him a big pillow for a bed. Christy Sanhuber (This was an email sent to the “Morning Blend” TV show after Christy adopted Dodger.) First of all THANK YOU for featuring Hope Safehouse in Racine on your show. Because of you we now have Dodger, who was found, hurt and alone, at a gas station in Mississippi. He is now happy and healthy and a great friend to everyone in the house! (Thanks again to the “Morning Blend” show for featuring HOPE, Dodger is especially happy.) www.hopesafehouse.org Thank you very much for calling to check on Tasha (Natasha, we just shortened her name a little). She is doing great and gets her head cone off tomorrow. She had an ear hematoma and had surgery two weeks ago. She hates the head cone and cannot wait to get it off. But overall she is doing well and is the queen of the castle. You guys are great! Just a note to update you on Jaxon, a black lab-mix, that we adopted in July 2007. He is a perfect fit to our family, we love him so much! He LOVES to go to the dog park, and go for rides in the van. He LOVES to go to doggie day care at Proper Paws too. He loves other dogs and people. At times he wishes that he was a lap dog. He is so mild mannered, just a great personality. One of his nick-names is “Baby”, that is because he is a big baby! He is our “baby” and we love him so much. Thanks H.O.P.E. for this wonderful boy! Happy Holidays! We got Tasha shortly after losing our Rottie, Angel, to cancer and she has taken over the roll as the princess since. About two months after we adopted Tasha we adopted Rocco a Shepard mix from the Lakeland Animal Shelter as well. The two have been best friends since and cannot do anything without each other. Mike, Karen, Matthew & Jaxon Ellenbecker We would love to hear updates and see pics of Tasha's siblings if possible. Hope all is well and THANK YOU for bringing her into our life. Happy Holidays Brooke Hello Friends, I hope things are going well at HOPE. Just wanted to send you a little gift for the holidays and let you know how things are going. We are very thankful for our little Katrina survivor. As you can see from the picture the adventures and fun are never ending. Molly & Paige have become good friends and Paige really is a joy to have in our lives. Thank you so much for bringing this little Page 4 schnauzer to us. Happy Holidays, Lisa Mahoney Just wanted to let you know how well our Buddy is. He’s healthy, loved and spoiled, like all animals should be. Let Jean from Proper Paws know that Buddy is obedient and well. Let Ron know that he was a great foster caregiver. God Bless all, Lori Schultz Hi, Here is the picture of Zoe (formerly known as Reebok) that you asked for. Connie Craig hopesafehouse@gmail.com THOUGHTS TO PONDER 1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer's history if you die. 2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong. 3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger. 4. There is great need for a sarcasm font. 5. How are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet? 6. Was learning cursive really necessary? 7. Map Quest needs to start their directions on #5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood. 8. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired. 9. Bad decisions make good stories. 10. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day. 11. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection... again. 12. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to the ten-page paper that I swear I did not make any changes to. 13. "Do not machine wash or tumble dry,” means I will never wear this -- ever. 14. I hate it when I miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello?), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voicemail. What'd you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away? 15. I hate leaving my house confident and looking nice and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste. 16. My 4-year old asked me once, "Mom what would happen if you ran over a ninja?" How do I respond to that? 17. I think the freezer deserves a light as well. 18. I wonder if the police ever get frustrated at the fact that everyone they drive behind obeys the speed limit. 19. Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you’re going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you’re crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk. 20. The letters T and G are very close to each other on a keyboard. This recently became all too apparent to me and consequently I will never be ending a work email with the phrase "Regards" again. 21. Do you remember when you were a kid; playing Nintendo and it wouldn’t work? You take the cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem? There was no Internet or message boards or FAQ's. We just figured it out. 22. Sometimes, I’ll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the heck was going on when I first saw it. 23. I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in. 24. The only time I look forward to a red light is when I'm trying to finish a text. 25. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear what they said? 26. Every time I have to spell a word over the phone using 'as in’ examples, I will undoubtedly draw a blank and sound like a complete idiot. Today I had to spell my boss's last name to an attorney and said "Yes that's G as in. (10 second lapse). mum...Gooiness" 27. What would happen if I hired two private investigators to follow each other? 28. While driving yesterday I saw a banana peel in the road and instinctively swerved to avoid it...thanks Mario Kart.
