This year Temple Sinai has the honor of hosting the 141st Annual Interfaith
Thanksgiving Service. It was first held in 1874 when the First Universalist Church,
the First Unitarian Church and Temple B’rith Kodesh joined together. Our participating
congregations now include First Universalist Church, First Unitarian Church, Temple
B’rith Kodesh, Temple Beth El, The Baptist Temple, Third Presbyterian Church, The
Islamic Center of Rochester, The Catholic Diocese of Rochester and Temple Sinai.

As many of you are aware the first permanent
Jewish community within the United States
began with the arrival of 23 Jewish refugees
from Recife, Brazil in New Amsterdam (today
known as New York or the Big Apple). These
brave souls started what was to become
another golden age in Jewish history where our
people could reside in safety and prosperity
alongside our neighbors. We have been blessed
with a freedom and acceptance here that was
otherwise unknown throughout the world in
our long years of dispersion. During the years
there has been no continual governmental
policy of anti-Semitism. Even when a policy
such as U.S. Grant’s banning Jewish merchants
from a region during the Civil War it was
more of an aberration than the rule. Today we
have been accepted in almost all endeavors of
American society and enjoy a status beyond
our numerical percentage of the population.
We are seen as an integral part of the fabric of
this civilization.
Rabbi’s Message
We have earned our place in this country by
contributing to all aspects of American life. We
have been loyal citizens and along with our
neighbors continue to work for the betterment
of this precious country. For all of this we are
most grateful.
One aspect of our years here in this country
has been our constant interaction with our
neighbors of all faiths, races and ethnic origins.
We understand that we are part of the quilt
of diversity that makes this a land of limitless
potential. We have continued to reap the
harvest of this land in many forms. We truly
have much for which it is appropriate to
express deep thanks.
This year Temple Sinai
has the honor to host the
141st Union Thanksgiving
Service on November 26
at 11:00 a.m. This is the
oldest continual interfaith
Union Thanksgiving
service in the country. It
originated with Temple B’rith Kodesh, the First
Unitarian Church and the First Universalist
Church. It is a special opportunity to worship
with our neighbors as part of the greater
community. Our participation in this service
enables us to express the principle that many of
us hold dear, that we are equal partners in the
multicultural American landscape.
The service is for all Americans and includes
some aspects of different faith traditions. It is
also a model for anyone from any country to
see the best of American multi-culturalism and
religious diversity. In recent years we have
added the Islamic community to our interfaith
service which provides one more piece of the
true range of the American religious landscape.
I am sure if you come and worship with your
neighbors you will be enriched and moved by
the experience.

greeter or host for the refreshments after the

November – the weather is really changing.
The leaves are mostly gone, the days are crisp,
if not downright cold, and you know that
winter is just around the corner.
It's the month during which we officially give
thanks, on the fourth Thursday of the month,
with a big turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing,
gravy, cranberries and a variety of vegetables
and desserts. However, in my family, there's
an equally important holiday, that's not on
any regular calendar – Turkey Day, and it is
celebrated the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
The next year, my brother Greg, proposed a
change to that format. He rents low income
housing on the west side of Syracuse and his
tenants are as needy as anyone in the local
community service projects we had been
involved with the previous year. According
to him, there are many opportunities for these
families to get support for Christmas, but none
for Thanksgiving, so he proposed to give all
of his tenants who had rented from him for at
least one year a frozen turkey.
That first year we weren't very organized
but over the years a process developed. My
sister-in-law, Kaye orders the turkeys from
the neighborhood grocery store a week in
advance. She originally ordered from them to
support a local business, but over the years,
they have also given her the best price on an
order of approximately 45 turkeys and our
three families share the cost. In the beginning,
Greg and his sons picked up the turkeys, Peter,
Dan, my Dad and I drove in from Rochester
and we all met near his properties to begin

Over the years the cast of characters making the
deliveries has changed as our kids have grown
up, gone away to college (it's hard to make it
home for the Sunday before Thanksgiving),
moved out of the area or in the case of my
father, have passed on. On the other hand,
when my nephew Ken got married, his wife,
Tess, became a regular part of the crew. Since
she is pregnant and due November 19th, I doubt
she will be helping this year, but his brother
Mark has a new girlfriend, so hopefully, Amelia
will be joining us.
My brother takes great pride in his properties
and the quality that he maintains, so this is a
wonderful opportunity for him to show us the
results of his latest project or acquisition. For
example, there's the roof that has been rebuilt
to match the architecture of the rest of the
house or the house that had 3 small apartments
squeezed into it that he has completely
reconfigured to only have 2 apartments where
actual families could live. His sons are both
grown now and working in the business with
him, and it's fun to hear them all discussing
projects and future plans.
So while most Americans will be sitting down
on the fourth Thursday of November and
giving thanks, I will be doing that on Turkey
Day – the day my family has created to
appreciate all the blessings in our lives.
However, this year on Thanksgiving Day
at 11:00 a.m., I will be at Temple Sinai to
participate in Rochester's 141st Interfaith
Thanksgiving Service. It is believed to be the
longest running continuous interfaith service in
the country and I am looking forward to giving
thanks for all the wonderful aspects of my life
with so many others from our community. I
wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and hope
that day is everything you would like it to be.

President’s Message
It started over 20 years ago when my brothers,
father and I were discussing what to do for
holiday gifts that year. My dad was quite
adamant, he didn't want us buying him
anything because he was always afraid to get
himself any new tool/toy from September to
December for fear one of his children would
be getting him that, and would be upset that
he already had it. So we decided each family
would do a community service project instead,
and we would share our stories about that
experience rather than gifts. That was the first
year, and I remember thinking it was a good
idea even though I don't remember what my
family did.

(The Student Corner)

During the month of October we celebrated
Simchat Torah, during which we read the
last Parashah (portion) of the Torah, followed
by reading the first Parashah. This ritual
symbolizes the un-broken sequence of the
cyclical reading from the Torah. Simchat Torah
is also the last holiday celebrated during the fall
season.
In addition to Simchat Torah, our students
and parents attended our annual Open House
events that were scheduled on Sunday October
18 and 25.

Tivnu: Building Justice
Tivnu is Hebrew for You Shall Build! At Tivnu,
we build houses, build community, and build
a better world. Tivnu: Building Justice is the
only service learning organization that braids
together direct service for the fulfillment of
basic human needs, Jewish learning and living,
and leadership development. For more details,

Perfect Gift for Chanukah,
Thanksgiving, and other occasions:
Our school will continue to provide our Temple
members (and other interested people) with the
opportunity to purchase beautiful candles for
Chanukah, Shabbat, and other occasions. The
candles, made in the city of Tzfat (Safed), will
be displayed on Sunday, November 22, during
the Temple’s Chanukah Bazaar, till Sunday,
December 6. All proceeds will benefit the
Religious School Fund.

Rabbi Katz and Rabbi Silbert are teaching
Jewish Ethics on Sunday mornings. The
classes will be held from 9:30 –10:30 a.m.
and will correspond to the school schedule.
The Rabbis will be using the book, A Code of
Jewish Ethics: Volume 1: You Shall Be Holy,
by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin.
Beginning November 8th, Basic Judaism
from a Liberal Perspective will be taught
from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Pre-registration
is required. If you or anyone you know is

interested, call the temple office at

the Adult Education Committee. Committee

RATSY
YOUTH CORNER
RATSY started off our year with some great
High Holy Days services led by our amazing
religious and cultural VP, Sarah Geller. Over 35
teens attend the teen Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur services. With your help RATSY was
able to collect over four pallets of food for the
annual HHD Food Drive for Foodlink. On the first afternoon of Sukkot we had a joint
event with the middle school youth group,
SAWCY. We learned about Sukkot, played
Jewish Jeopardy and connected with friends.
During the weekend of October 23-25, approximately
125 NFTY NEL Jewish
teens traveled to
Rochester for Derech Atid,
a weekend of Jewish
Northeast Lakes
learning, camaraderie

SAWCY
SAWCY started the year off with some great
events. We had a blast at “Snacks in the
Sukkah” with RATSY where we played ice
breakers, Sukkot trivia, decorated cookies, and
ate tons of food! SAWCY’s trip to Stokoe Farms
was tons of fun with zip lining, going through
the corn maze, the huge slides, seeing the
animals, and enjoying the gorgeous weather
together. Coming up this month: Supermarket
Sweep on November 8 (joint event with
RATSY), as well as other opportunities to be
announced. Check your email and stay tuned
for more information! Breakfast Bagging Event
November 15 at 2:00 p.m.
Teens will come together to learn about Jewish
values that teach the importance of giving
to others in need. After hearing from Open
Door Mission, we will put together Happy
Thanksgiving cards and bags of breakfast
foods just in time for the holiday. Our record
was set last year at 109 bags! This year, Temple
Sinai and RATSY member Josh Fenster will be
serving as the event’s first-ever Teen Chair.

Eastern Europe and have had little exposure to
the food and traditions of Jews from around the
Mediterranean. We will explore worlds of the
Sephardim (Jews who left Spain or
Portugal after the 1492 expulsion)
and Mizrahim (Jews who never
left the Middle East and North
Africa since the beginnings of the
Jewish people).

and Shekoofeh Sussman will be
among the presenters discussing
their family stories. Of course, there will
be delicious food to sample!

Bissonette for being the winners
in the Annual Sukkah raffle. The
sukkah was put in place at the
Bissonette home from September
27 through October 4. Then it was
taken down and carefully stored
for the winner of next year’s raffle.

coordinating this event.

On Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Katz urged us to
contribute to the High Holy Days Food Drive.
And we responded! Jeanette Batiste and Julia
Tedesco, Co-Executive Directors of Foodlink
wrote “Your generous donation is helping us
work towards our vision of a healthy, hungerfree community. Thank you for your donation
of 2256 lbs during the month of September.
Thank you for taking an active role in the fight
against hunger and its root causes.”
Our thanks go out to RATSY for their help in
handing out the grocery bags and loading the
Foodlink truck.

In October, the FRIENDSHIP GROUP enjoyed
the Pittsford Musical's wonderful performance
of Cabaret at Sutherland High School. Our
group has been attending these productions for
MANY years and are continuously impressed
by the very high level of talent maintained by
the Pittsford Musical organization.
Our November event
will be a trip to the
Strasenburg Planetarium.
Our members will be
notified of the date.
December 25 is our
annual Chinese dinner. Our plans for 2016
include events like Bingo Night, a trip to a
casino, a night of old-time comic movies, a
boat ride, a picnic and more. (Almost all of our
events end up with food!) If this sounds like
something you'd like to do with us please call
Leon and Florence Sporn at 377-4220......we're
a bunch of "seasoned citizens" who enjoy each
other’s company.

Habitat Pie Sale
Do Good While Eating Great!!
Temple Sinai has been a partner in the Habitat
Interfaith Partnership which builds Habitat Homes
in Rochester. Each November we sell pies with
the profits going towards Habitat. The pies are
homemade from scratch at Kelly’s Fruit Farm in
Hilton from fruit grown on their farm. The pies
are made with vegetable shortening and have no
preservatives. The pies are exceptionally delicious
and weigh 4 1/2 pounds each. The Apple Crisp loaf
weighs 2 1/2 pounds and costs $12. The pies cost
$16 each and come in the following flavors: Apple
Crumb, Apple Raspberry, Pumpkin and AppleCranberry- Raspberry.
NEW THIS DECEMBER - Corporate Pie Sales
Corporations, offices and businesses can also
order pies for delivery in December. These orders
will be separate from the November Thanksgiving
Orders. The pies will be delivered to your business
in December with a minimum order of 25 pies. The
pies will come in two flavors Apple Crumb or Apple
Raspberry and again are $16 each. Please contact
