BHS Drumline
Sport of the Arts
Drumline competitions involve
physical stamina, showmanship,
complicated choreography and
musicianship. For this reason it is
referred to as the sport of the arts.
Drumlines are made up of percussion instruments only (as compared
to drum corps which have drums
and brass). Drumline competitions
always take place indoors between
the months of February and May.
Drum corps competitions take
place outdoors between June and
August. Drumline competitions are
more world-wide than those of drum
corps.
The BHS Drumline has competed in the World Championships
for the past three years placing as
th
high as 12 . They have won the
Central California Championships
in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Ex-President Rogers Brandon filled in for Richard Beene,
who was reportedly sighted at a newspaper convention in Oregon
trying to push “Life as it should be” merchandise on unsuspecting
Oregonians.
Today’s meeting started early with a celebration of the Bridging Program. Four of the seven Bridging students who participated in the program four years ago returned and shared their
plans for the future. All graduated from BHS and all of those
present plan to go on to college. Rogers presented a certificate
and scholarship funds to assist these students.
Additionally, we were pleased to welcome the current Bridging
students who are nearing the end of their freshman year and are
currently participating in this terrific program. Thanks to Jeff
Johnson for coordinating the Bridging Program and to the many
Rotarians who helped sponsor students again this year.
After the Bridging Program, Ex-Pres Rogers started the regular
portion of our meeting.

to visiting Rotarian Ill “Moya” Yu Ekey, visiting all the way from
Cotabato City, Philippines. Rogers asked Moya to remember that
“what happens at a Rotary Club of Bakersfield meeting stays at a
Rotary Club of Bakersfield meeting”. He then presented a Paul
Harris Fellow to Riley Parker, who contributed as part of our 100%
campaign.
Rogers recognized Jeff Newman for starting the Garces Golf
Team in 1966, and Andy Barkate, whose son currently plays on
the Garces Team along with Jack Hale’s son and Rogers
Brandon’s son. This team recently traveled to Fresno where they
took “runner-up” in the Valley Championship. Soon the team will
travel to Southern California to play “the big boys”.
He recognized Ray Bishop for a wonderful airport, but asked if
the crowd of meth addicts (smokers) could be moved a little further
from the terminal exit. Consider it done, but Rogers was warned
that the next time he sees “SS” on his ticket to beware – “SS”
stands for “strip search.”
Members were reminded that next week we will meet at
BHS. Maps will be mailed to everyone showing how to get
there and where to park.
Good News Announcements
th
Bernie Herman: Invited members to attend the 8 annual “Men
Cooking” event benefitting the Bakersfield Museum of Art. Greg
Gallion: Excited that this weekend is the Rotary District Assembly
and guaranteed that he would pay more attention than Rogers did
when he went to District Assembly. Mike Chertok: Mentioned that
this Sunday is an “Art Day for Children” at CSUB. Children will work
with art teachers and develop a final art piece that will be displayed
for all to see. Cindy Pollard: Invited members to join her and
others in the CASA Harley ride this weekend.
Program
Sheryl Barbich started the program by providing a brief overview of the Vision 2020 process. Five years ago, members of Vision
2020 interviewed thousands of residents to get their opinions on
where Bakersfield should be by the year 2020 on a variety of
issues. The Vision 2020 feedback has been a vital component in
shaping our community. Sheryl recognized many of the Rotarians
that have assisted with this effort. In addition, Sheryl should be
recognized for leading the work of Vision 2020 and for her willingness to chew out Southern Californians who make snide remarks
about Bakersfield.
In an effort to keep the “pulse” of the community at the forefront,
Vision 2020 established the First Quarter Project Team, charged
with reporting accomplishments and re-surveying the community.
Results from their work can be viewed at the

Rotary World Peace Fellowship, 2007
Arthur Bassett is our nominee from Bakersfield Rotary Club to
earn a Masters Degree in International Studies, Conflict Resolution, or related fields. His foreign language is Spanish which is why
he selected Argentina and the Universidad del Salvador (a Rotary
Center for International Studies in Peace and Conflict).
While Art was born in Idaho, he grew up in Arizona, graduating
from High school in Douglas. He attended several branches of the
University of Arizona, graduating from Northern University in
Flagstaff in Forestry. He took one year at the University of Montana.
He has worked fighting forest fires and worked a year in Mexico
where he was involved with local social problems. While there he
developed an interest in people and their problems. This past year
in Bakersfield he has been with an antiviolence group working for a
health organization for Jr. High and High school students on
prevention of sexual assaults and violence.
This is a 2 year $75,000 Rotary Peace Scholarship. His mother
and sister live in Bakersfield. Meet Arthur Bassett. Acquaint him
with Rotary.
