In addition, SHARE has extra benefits because it gives Mt. Jezreel opportunities to meet, support, and befriend the growing diverse population who live and work in neighboring communities. In order to ensure that Mt. Jezreel is an active and effective SHARE host site, we have Bernetta Robinson and Thomas White, our dedicated co-lay pastors for the COP ministry, and Cecilia Mason, our treasurer, who compiles and submits our SHARE orders every month. Their time and efforts are combined with those from a steadfast group of about 60 willing volunteers who generously and faithfully give of themselves every month. These individuals serve in a number of incredible ways, such as organizers, drivers, sorters, baggers, distributors, promoters, greeters, record keepers, scribes, errand runners, and porters. On any given SHARE collection and distribution day at Mt. Jezreel, it is safe to expect that each COP helper will go all-out to make it the most efficient and meaningful operation from assembly of the first to distribution of the last of numerous food bags. A typical SHARE day at Mt. Jezreel al- VALUE NOW $21 The Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Eldridge Spearman, is located in the culturally diverse and heavily populated area of Silver Spring, Maryland. After 24 years of participating with the SHARE Food Network, this program is now a vital and solid component of the Community Outreach Program (COP), one of many ministries in the church to assist and serve others. Working with SHARE is one of the most fitting ways to help reflect an important attitude at Mt. Jezreel ─ that it is a “Loving, Caring, and Sharing” church. In 1988, COP was the idea from a new church member, Kathleen Baker, who had the strong desire to involve her church in more community outreach activities. With the strong encouragement from the former pastor, the late Rev. Dr. Harold E. Trammell, Ms. Baker along with only eight other members launched the COP ministry. It began with clothing drives, eyeglass collections, donations to Third World countries, work with visually impaired persons through the Lighthouse for the Blind, and then, the addition of SHARE. COP is grateful to be a part of SHARE as the program continues to be an answer for so many households that are facing rising grocery costs and down- FOR 10 POUNDS BACON CHEDDAR BURGERS $27 Limited Quantity Available FOR 8 POUNDS GOOD FOR YOUR FOOD BUDGET; GOOD FOR YOUR COMMUNITY. Even though it has a new name, there are many long-standing myths about this program. Myth: People use food stamps to buy lavish foods and expensive treats. Fact: The average food stamp benefit comes out to be less than $1.50 per person per meal. Myth: Food stamps are for lazy people who don’t work. Fact: While people who are unemployed can still qualify for food stamps, over half of SNAP recipients who are able to work have jobs. Myth: If I receive SNAP benefits, my children will have to repay a debt to the government. Fact: Receiving SNAP benefits has no financial impact whatsoever on your children. Myth: Receiving SNAP benefits will affect my applications for citizenship or permanent residency in the future. Fact: Food stamp benefits are not taken into account on applications for citizenship or permanent residency. Myth: People will make judgments about me when they see me using food stamps at the store. Fact: SNAP benefits are linked to an EBT card, which looks like a credit card. No one will be able to tell if you are using SNAP benefits or a bank card. Jezreel Baptist Church From page 1 ways opens first in prayer among COP members, begins early, and runs throughout the morning as a multi-facet process. It starts when the 2- to 3-person transportation team uses a van, the personal vehicle of a COP volunteer who drives it to the SHARE warehouse and meets up with other COP members to pack and pick up the food. At the same time, a crew of more COP members is very busy back at Mt. Jezreel. They are determining the number and type of packages to distribute, giving instructions, assembling paper and plastic bags, stuffing bags with menus, setting up tables, and organizing space in the church hall before the van returns. Many times, there are extra volunteers, including young people from various youth groups, students who may be earning service hour credit to meet school requirements, and fraternal organizations, with a special shout out to the brothers of Psi Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The day usually ends by early afternoon when all SHARE food bags are distributed. Through trying different ways, COP now has a very effective approach for handling and distributing the “Value (or grocery) Packages.” For on each side of the room, tables in an “L” shape are placed so that one set of tables will be used for “wet” items (frozen) and the other set for “dry” items (produce, vegetables, fruits, staples). An equal number of bags are lined up near the wet and dry tables. When the food arrives, the items are sorted and unpacked onto the tables. Next, an assembly line approach is used to fill the bags. So, a single line of people forms on each side of the room. Each person gets an empty bag and walks along facing the front of the corresponding table, while other persons behind the table, acting as servers, put the appropriate items into the bag. Then, the person returns the filled bag to the center of the room where one “dry” and one “wet” bag is paired together side by side as a completed SHARE package – now ready for distribution. This process continues until the specified numbers of all bags are paired up. If there are “Special Packages” for the month, a separate operation is handled elsewhere in the room away from the process for the “Value Packages.” When the count of all completed “Value” and “Special” packages is verified, the treasurer or designated receptionist will check in the patrons coming for their food bags. Then, COP helpers will get the patrons’ packages and assist them with taking the bags to their vehicles. Once finished, the tables are broken down and stored, the room is cleaned and reset as before, and the transportation team carries away any bulky trash. So much good comes through Mt. Jezreel’s work with SHARE. It was inevitable that goodwill feelings and activities would spill out in lots of extra ways. For example, on various even-numbered months throughout the year, the COP ministry broadens its spirit of helping. In addition to the regular SHARE distribution, a dedicated team of COP workers prepares 150 bag lunches, assembles toiletries donated by members and friends of the church, and delivers these items to persons experiencing homelessness in various locations in the Washington metropolitan area. During the winter months, COP takes the lead to collect and distribute coats and other warm clothing to many individuals living on the street. At times, COP has provided items to the Adventist Hypothermia Center. It also teams up with other Mt. Jezreel ministries and volunteers at several outside agencies such as Martha’s Table and the Open Door Shelter for Women to assist adults, children, and families in need of food, housing, clothing, counseling, and medical care. Presently, COP, as part of the broader Mt. Jezreel‘s Mission’s Ministry, is working to meet the church’s objective to establish an emergency food pantry. As a result of SHARE, Mt. Jezreel appreciates that through its COP ministry it can serve and do what is expected as stated in Romans 15:2-3 (Message Bible): “Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, ‘How can I help?’ That’s exactly what Jesus did.” If you are interested in ways you can team up with the COP ministry to promote healthy and strong families and communities, please contact Bernetta Robinson at nanibernie@outlook. com or Thomas White at thomaswhite5535@ gmail.com. Crusty wholegrain bread is topped with mashed avocado, a simple crab salad, vine-ripened tomatoes, and a slice of melted Provolone cheese. The open-faced sandwich is sweet, creamy, salty, and 100% satisfying! INGREDIENTS • 2 ripe avocados • 1 T fresh lemon or lime juice • 16 ounces surimi crab • 1/3 cup mayonnaise or plain, Greek-style yogurt • 4 tomato slices • 4 slices provolone or other white cheese • 4 slices thick-cut crusty bread • Salt & Pepper • 4 slices Provolone cheese NECTARINES STORE: Even firm, unripe nectarines are delicate, so handle them carefully to avoid bruising. Ripen hard fruits at room temperature, stem-side down, until the flesh feels soft when pressed and they begin to emit a subtle fragrance. Refrigerate nectarines only after they’ve ripened, which can prolong freshness for up to 5 days. USE: Try grilling or roasting nectarines for an excellent accompaniment to pork, fish, and chicken. For a simple summer dessert, slice the nectarines and sprinkle them with a tiny bit of sugar, and perhaps a pinch of ground clove. After 15 minutes, they make their own syrup which brings out the sweet summer flavor. If baking, look for freestone nectarines, whose pits are easier to remove. To slice, cut through to the pit all the way around the seam, twisting each half to dislodge the stone. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice can prevent sliced fruit from browning. To remove the fuzzy skins before baking, submerge whole fruits in boiling water for 10 seconds, and then slip off the skins. To make a “crumble” topping, mix equal parts of butter, oatmeal, and sugar. Add a tiny pinch of salt and cinnamon or clove, and “crumble” the topping over the prepared fruit before baking. CELERY STORE: The two best ways of storing celery work equally well: wrapped in a dry paper towel, and then in either a plastic bag or a perforated plastic bag, OR wrapped in aluminum foil. USE: Celery is the unsung hero of food flavoring, is full of water and fiber, and is a wonderful team player with other foods, whether use raw, sautéed, or simmered. My aunt used to gently poach celery segments (about 2” long) in a light, lemony chicken broth with a bit of onion, and then serve it as a hot vegetable with a sour cream sauce. My mom minced it finely and added it and shredded carrots to nectarine Jello. She also would buy celery root, and shred it as a salad topped with her homemade sweet onion dressing that was full of poppy seeds. Aunt Dorothy served raw sticks spread with either peanut butter or cream cheese, topped with chopped dates or raisins. I always saved the tender center shoots as treats for my children who used to argue over who got the most. DIRECTIONS 1. Heat broiler on high. 2. In a small bowl, mash avocados with lime juice. Add salt and pepper, to taste. 3. In a separate bowl, stir together crabmeat, mayonnaise, ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper. 4. Arrange bread on a baking sheet. Divide avocado evenly among slices, and then top with crab mixture. Finish each slice of bread with 1 slice of tomato and 1 slice of cheese. 5. Broil until cheese is golden brown, approximately 3-4 minutes (but keep a close eye on it because it might be done even faster). SALMON BURGERS INGREDIENTS • 1 cup finely chopped red onion • 1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basil • 1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 4 salmon patties, defrosted • Cooking spray • 8 (3/4-ounce) slices focaccia, toasted PREPARATION Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl and set aside. Spray a frying pan with cooking spray, and place over medium high heat. Sear salmon burgers for 2 minutes, turn, immediately top with onion/basil mixture. Cover and turn down heat for salmon to finish cooking to your desired degree of doneness. Serve patties on toasted focaccia with lettuce and tomato. WATER In warmer weather, we all run the risk of dehydration. Soft drinks and juices add the necessary liquid to our system, yet put more unnecessary sugar in our systems, causing us to be even more thirsty. Water…simple water…is what our bodies need. Improve the flavor with a bit of citrus peel, a sliver of apple, a sprig of mint, even a single grape cut in half can change the essence of water. After a week or more of increasing your intake of water, you should feel better and healthier.
