MARCH 2012
ISSUE 1
NEXT MEETING:
TUESDAY, MARCH 13
NEW SOUTH BAY REDISTRICTING
I am sure everyone remembers last fall when a committee was selected for the
state of California to redraw district lines. Some of you may have attended one of
the meetings that was open to the public. There were approximately 13 committee
members. Well, the job is done. Please come and hear Sean Gorsline tell us the
outcome. Our State Assembly District, State Senate District, and U.S.
Congressional Districts have all changed. Sean has been referred to us by Steve
Napolitano, Supervisor Knabe’s representative. Please note, our usual venue,
Sangria in Hermosa Beach, will be closed for remodeling. We will be meeting in
President Martha Logan’s home. See details right.
LAST MEETING:
For those of you who missed the last meeting, it was one of the biggest draws our
club has had for a regular gathering. It was open to guests, of course, and plenty
came. The topic was the Redondo Beach Power Plant. We had two presentations,
by two Redondo Beach Republicans. The plant is antiquated, and operating at a
limited capacity. AES, the Virginia-based multinational energy corporation that
operates three power plants in Southern California, has plans to replace the existing power plant, which first came online in 1948 and added more units through
1967. They say the new facility will be modern, efficient and clean - and a third
of the size of the current structure. Redondo Beach Councilman Steve Diels’
presentation supported the AES plan.
A community based citizens group, Building a Better Redondo, would prefer to
see the land put to a different use. The “slow growth” group is gathering
signatures to place an initiative on a municipal ballot that would give voters the
option to eliminate power generation as an accepted use at the AES site ... to
change the zoning. Jim Light, VP/GM, LinQuest Corporation, presented a
detailed outline of ideas using the space for parkland and revenue generating
retail and hotel options.
It was an enlightening and “lively” meeting, but President Martha held
everyone to a “civil” code of conduct!

TIME TO GET MOVIN!
BOOTS, TENNIS SHOES, FLOPS OR LOAFERS.
It doesn’t matter. Whatever you put on your feet is
acceptable, as long as they transport you to an opportunity
to give President Obama the “BOOT!”
Starting in April, we want to have a voter registration table
with two volunteers in downtown Manhattan Beach,
Saturdays from noon to four. We would like this to run
through mid May, or whenever the cutoff is for the
Republican Primary, and then start it up again in July
through September. The first weekend of October is the
Hometown Fair, where we always have a booth. Rosalie and
Martha are working on the details, and will contact you via
e-mail. even if you can only work one shift, on one
Saturday, it will be a great contribution!
MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL!
By now, you should all have received you MBRWF membership
renewal form. If you have not already sent it in, please do so.
I would like to get the roster updated. Please note,
IF YOU JOINED during the last quarter of 2011 (Sept.-Oct.), you did
not receive a form, because YOUR dues are good through 2012! Also,
there is a renewal form on page 3 for your convenience, BUT don’t
worry, you will get another notice!
President’s Message
Hi Everyone!
I know it has been a while since I put a
newsletter together. Let’s see. We had
a wonderful Christmas Party. Thank
you Carol and John Shafer for
sharing your beautiful home ... again!
Our officer elections are evident in
the box at left. The pot luck food was
delicious as usual, and thank you for
the beautiful Chan Luu wrap bracelet!
Rosalie knows how much I wanted
one. Of course, I think she was just
protecting her own! (LOL)
If you have not read the article on
our January meeting, be sure to check
it out. We had almost 40 people,
including guests attend for this rather
controversial subject. I was very
careful in laying the ground rules
before hand, so no one made a scene!
Whether or not you are a Redondo
Beach resident, this effects us all. Get
educated on it, and discuss it with all
Redondo Beach friends.
Our next meeting, March 13, will
feature a speaker who is a local expert
on our area’s redistricting results.
Sean Gorsline will fill us in. It has
been a long and complex task, and
I am anxious to hear who we are
lumped in with this time. Come and
see if this will help or hurt our efforts.
Remember, this meeting will be at my
house. If you want to eat or drink
anything, you better bring it, or you
will be stuck with whatever is in my
refrigerator. My address is on page
one.
We will not be doing our usual yard
sale this year. Rosalie and I have
decided to put our spring efforts into
voter registration. Please see the notice
at left, and join in the team effort to
restore America.
On a personal note, I would like to
thank all of you who expressed
condolences to Jack and I on the
passing of my dear 93 year old mother.
I am so grateful that she was able to be
with her California family during her
last days.
See you on the 13th!!
~President Martha

Hmmmm .... remember this??
At our debate party in October, when
there were eight candidates in the
Republican Primary race, we had a
“straw poll” to see what our members felt
about the candidates. Of course, we used
ACORN rules of voting: Vote Early, Vote
Often, No Proof of Citizenship Required,
and FREE PIZZA! At the time, Mitt
Romney and Rick Perry were the top
candidates in all the “media” polls. Newt
Gingrich has hovering around 3 percent,
and Rick Santorum was barely mentioned
in the press. Considering the events of last
week, we are wondering how one of our
very own MBRWF members had the inside
track on the future! 36 beads were placed
in Rick’s ballot box. Inquiring minds want
to know!
