The Clarion Volume 12, No. 37 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 7, 2016 Our Parish Mission Liturgy Schedule Led by the Spirit, the Catholic community of Saint Anne strives to live the example of Jesus, who said, “I came so that you might have life, and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) Monday-Friday: 8:15 a.m. Saturday: First Saturday: 8:15 a.m. Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard Mass of Anticipation: 5:15 p.m. Sunday: 7:15, 9:00, 11:00 a.m., 5:15 p.m. Saint Anne Catholic Community • 120 North Ela Street, Barrington, IL 60010 • 847.382.5300 • stannebarrington.org Wellstreams—Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig TO BE ONE OF US During the long war years, a boy looked frequently at a picture of his dad on the table. He left when the boy was an infant. After several years, the boy had forgotten him as a person, but he would often look at the picture and say, “If only my father could step out of the picture and be real …” When human beings had almost forgotten God, God stepped into the world in the form of his Son. I came upon a recent writing in which the author tells about an artist of the 19th century, John Millais, who painted a picture of Jesus working in Joseph’s carpentry workshop. The artist titled the work Christ in the House of His Parents. Pictured as a child, it seems that Jesus has hurt himself while working under the guidance of his foster-father, Joseph. His Mother is lovingly taking care of the wound and comforting Jesus in this accident. Although this is an artist’s interpretation and probably an imaginary incident (though possible), it portrays so well what is made evident to us throughout the life of Jesus as described in the gospels. “The Word became flesh.” Jesus became human like us! It is truly amazing, almost unbelievable, that this Word, Jesus, who existed since the beginning of time and is truly God, would become flesh—would become human—for us. But he did! Jesus walked in our shoes and became one of us because God cared about us. God had absolutely no need to become one of us, but God wanted to convince us how much we mean to him. Yet, with all the words we read, all the words we hear and all the pictures we see, we can’t even begin to comprehend how much we mean to God! And, if becoming human wasn’t enough, Jesus lived among us for thirty-three years as a human being and was willing, ultimately, to die for us. The words, “the Word became flesh,” should strongly remind us that Jesus was human and was like us in every way except in sin. The Scriptures make it positively evident to us that Jesus had the same emotions as we. He showed his love especially for his mother, for Martha, Mary and Lazarus, for the rich young man and for his disciples to mention just a few people in his life. Luke’s gospel clearly gives examples of Jesus enjoying various social occasions—attending a wedding and especially eating dinners with his friends. In contrast to these examples of happiness and celebration, he felt pity for those who were suffering from illnesses or hunger or those who lost a loved one. Records reveal that he cried at the death of his friend, Lazarus, and also before entering Jerusalem when he knew that the city would not accept him as the Messiah. Like us, he wanted companionship, and we are told that he took Peter, James and John along with him on many occasions. At the end of a hard day, Jesus fell asleep in the boat; he became tired like all of us. We are told that he experienced intense fear in the garden just before his passion, and he expressed anger when he saw the temple being misused. The evangelist, John, had been with Jesus as his very close friend for three years and really knew Jesus first-hand. So when he says in his gospel the “Word became flesh” and became one of us, he really meant it! But that Word, Jesus, didn’t just become one of us to live a quiet life. He was a man of the people. He touched those who needed his help or who wanted healing regardless of the law because he knew it was his ministry to walk among the lowly and those who relied on him. Everyone, even sinners, was most welcome in his presence. Why did Jesus come to earth as God in human form? Was it to give us the ultimate teachings ever? Though they were the greatest teachings ever given, he came for more than that. Did Jesus come to set the perfect example that a man or woman should live? Yes, but much more than that. Did Jesus walk this earth to perform miracles and help people? While he always reached out to the people in need, there was a greater reason. Jesus came to earth to become one of us. He was the way to the Father, and he became flesh to make the Father known to us. We can no longer say it is too difficult to get to know our God. God has revealed God’s self to us in his son, Jesus, and sent him to us because he cares about us and loves us! C.S. Lewis said it so well. “The Son of God became human that we might become sons and daughters of God. God became human that we might become children of God and live with him forever.” Lewis reminds us that God becoming one of us is worthy of the greatest celebration! As a thankful, honored and loved people of God, let us do just that—celebrate!! 2 Saint Anne Church • August 7, 2016 • stannebarrington.org Office of the Pastor Stewardship of Treasure Weekly Offering for July 31st, 2016 People attending Weekend Liturgies: 1,458 Sunday Offering Envelopes used: 306 Electronic Giving/Direct Debit/Stock Total for Sunday Weekly Budget for Sunday Collections Difference Year to Date Collection vs. Budget Year to Date Sunday/Fall Catch-up Year to Date Budget for Sunday Collections Difference Year to Date Collections $22,668.00 $8,272.00 $30,940.00 $40,000.00 -$9,060.00 $188,890.00 $200,000.00 -$11,110.00 Sharing Parish Commitment: $6,875.00 Archdiocesan Required Collections: $6,846.00 Debt Reduction Collections: $3,826.00 PLEASE CONSIDER SIGNING UP FOR GIVE CENTRAL. THE YEAR OF MERCY: COMFORT THE SORROWFUL, INSTRUCT THE IGNORANT “It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the spiritual … works of mercy.” Pope Francis The spiritual works of mercy developed as Christians cared for the world in which they lived—admonish the sinner, counsel the doubtful, comfort the sorrowful, instruct the ignorant, bear wrongs patiently, forgive all injuries, pray for the living and the dead. To reflect on these works includes doing them and then looking back on what we have done and who we have become. Take comforting the sorrowful. We have all found ourselves accompanying someone who has suffered a divorce or lost a spouse to death or was downsized or was overlooked for the promotion they desperately needed or was disappointed in their children’s behavior or was driven by debilitating anxieties or etc. In short, we and our family and friends suffer in one way or another, and we walk together. In comforting the sorrowful, we often don’t know what to say. We want to console, and we bring forward whatever wisdom we have. We say things like, “Call me” or “If I can do anything, just let me know.” But we soon come to understand that comforting the sorrowful is not about banishing grief but about walking with a person we love until what has come to pass is somehow integrated into a larger identity and purpose. Take instructing the ignorant. If we are teachers, the application is obvious. But this spiritual work goes beyond formal instruction. It means we communicate whatever knowledge we have in a way that empowers those who receive it. It may be a parent bent over and soft talking into the ear of a child or a boss carefully explaining to an employee what needs to be done or a friend pointing out the implications of a decision. We all have some knowledge that would benefit others and, instead of keeping it to ourselves, we offer it in the hope that it will help. In comforting the sorrowful and instructing the ignorant, we become other-centered and, as every spiritual tradition knows, in becoming other-centered, we enter into the deepest secret about ourselves. Being merciful is our true identity. Registration is for both 1st and 2nd year students; students in the 2nd year must re-register again this year. If you haven’t registered, we need your registration A.S.A.P. Thank you to those of you who have already registered. We will contact registrants in mid-August to set up small home groups. Registration forms must be received by Monday, August 15th, to be included in the first round. New this year: Registration and payment are online for your convenience. The registration link can be found on our website under Sacraments / Teen Confirmation or Upcoming Registrations. The program consists of 12 sessions in each of the two years: 4 large group sessions in our Parish Gym keynoting a speaker, music and a student reflection. There are also 8 small group sessions hosted in a catechist’s home. We use Matthew Kelly’s program, De cisio n Po int, which has been well received by the students and catechists. Students are also expected to volunteer in the community over the two years. Second year candidates are required to participate in the Spiritus Retreat, a one day interactive retreat, held at the Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. More information about the content of the program is on our website under Faith Formation / Youth / Young Adult Ministry / Confirmation Preparation. For more information about the program, email Michael Hugo at mhugo@stannebarrington.org or Karen Poglitsch atkpoglitsch@stannebarrington.org. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Saint Anne Catholic Community welcomes those who may have an interest in developing a relationship with Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) invites anyone interested in becoming Catholic, including: Non-baptized adults who seek the opportunity to get acquainted with the Catholic faith, ask questions about Christ and the Catholic Church and reflect on personal religious beliefs and practices Baptized Catholics who have not received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation Adults baptized in another faith tradition who wish to know more about the Catholic faith The Church welcomed seven people last year through the RCIA process at Saint Anne, and eight were welcomed the previous year. Through this small group format, teens are able to pray and share together as peer companions on the journey of life. As a faith community, it is important that we provide these opportunities for our youth in a way that truly reflect acceptance of all those who wish to participate through a format that enables and encourages active involvement on the part of all group members. All those whose registrations for these programs have been received in the Faith Formation office by Monday, August 15th, at 3:00 p.m., will be provided with the opportunity to choose their small group. Group sizes will be limited, and choices will be accepted on a first-come basis with preference given to those wishing to return to a group they had been in the previous year. In fairness to all, any group preferences indicated on registration forms or communicated outside of the Group Choice process cannot be accepted. Specific details of the Journey group choice process will be sent to all registrants at the beginning of September via email. All Journey registrations received after Monday, August 15th, at 3:00 p.m., will be provided with a choice of those groups in which space remains after the first round is completed. For children in grades 1-5 Children’s Faith Formation, initial class placements will occur for those who have registered by Monday, August 15th, at 3:00 p.m. Registrations received after Monday, August 15th, will be placed as we are able which may not be prior to the beginning of sessions in September. RX = Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. Second Reading: Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 Gospel: Luke 12:32-48 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. Today’s gospel pericope concerns the End Time and the return of the Christ. Recall that between 70-90 CE (Common Era, formerly AD, Anno Domini, in the Year of the Lord), when Luke is writing down the existing oral tradition for his contemporaries, that it is about two generations after Jesus’ death and departure; generations have died awaiting the return of the Christ in glory to make the final judgment and people in Luke’s time have begun to think that the Christ’s promised return is not at all imminent. In the face of the seemingly capricious and cruel injustices of daily life, they have started to slip in their vigilance to remain faithful to God through following Jesus closely. Hence, at vv.35-37, Luke warns against their acting irresponsibly, and at 38-40, calls them to return to being vigilant while waiting for the return of the Christ. Luke says it straightaway in vv. 32-34: Do no t be afraid any longer … sell your belongings and give alms … Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach … Recall how direct last Sunday’s gospel was, 12:13-21. Today, Luke is equally clear: do not act out of fear but rather in loving response to God’s invitation to disengage from possessions in order to give alms (serve others) which will be like treasure in heaven that no thief can steal (v.33). Nine of the fourteen verses from 35 through 48 contain admonitions: Gird your loins and light your lamps … be read y to open immediately … vigilant on his arrival … not have let his house be broken into … you also must be prepared … prudent steward … will [be] put in charge … Blessed is that servant … that servant’s master will come [unexpectedly] … the servant who did not make preparations … shall be beaten severely … All these verses warn the sometimes flagging, weary community to be vigilant, to act in response to the needs they see around them and so not be caught flat-footed when the Master arrives. The first parable at vv.35-38 has a Eucharistic overtone. Wed d ing … table … he [the master] will gird himself … to wait on them. At the start of Communion time, we say, “Happy are they who are called to his supper” because the Lord serves us; he washes our feet. It is the reversal of the eternal Master-servant relationship; if the Lord washes our feet, are we to do the same for others? At John 13:12c-15, that evangelist emphasizes that Jesus requires us to so do. At vv.35-36, Luke continues: be ready for action! Tunics were worn free-flowing; in order to work, one hitched up the lower end and secured it with a belt around the waist (… gird your loins). It recalls the passage from Exodus (12:11) about how one was to eat the Passover: with loins girt and sandals on their feet. Note well that at 22:18, Luke associates the Paschal meal with waiting for the return of the Lord (see also two of the other evangelists, Mark at 14:25 and Matthew at 26:29 and, as well, Paul at 1 Cor 11:26). In the midst of these ordinary Sundays of the Year, we have a clear, unmistakable “theme” - it is what every Mass is about. What we celebrate always has as its central focus the paschal mystery. No matter what the season of the liturgical year, high holy days like Christmas and Easter or “ordinary Sundays” like today, when the Presider calls us to proclaim the mystery of faith, we respond: “When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory.” But it is not enough that we have been chosen, not enough to only proclaim the Continued on the following page 16 Saint Anne Church • August 7, 2016 • stannebarrington.org Sharing the Living Story saving death of Jesus; no, we must continue the struggle to remain vigilant and in faith, to continue to struggle to accomplish the Lord’s bidding to do justice during this waiting period; when he comes, he will take the faithful ones, seat them at table and wait on them. The next simile about the thief in the night continues the warning to be vigilant: the coming of the Lord is unforeseeable. Luke warns that we must be prepared during this waiting since we cannot know the day or the hour (38-39) that the Son of Man will arrive. At v.41, Peter asks for whom this parable is meant: for the in-group (the disciples) or for the out-group (everyone) as well? Jesus responds with yet another parable: the story of the steward. A steward held a lot of power; he was in charge of all the other servants/slaves and was responsible for the running of the master’s business as well as the household. The master therefore placed a great deal of trust in him and expected a rigorous accounting in return. If he was found lax, a severe punishment ensued; if others acted unworthily, they got “fewer stripes.” The message is clear: those in charge in the community had grave responsibility and were open to ultimate punishment: banishment to outside the group. They could not be lax during this period while waiting for the Lord’s return; they must treat all in their care with justice, with righteousness. Much w ill be required of the perso n entrusted w ith m uch and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more. Are there multiple layers in the psalm refrain for today? Might there be a small amount of hesitancy as we sing it: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. So what? Is that it? Much will be required of the person entrusted with much. … (v.48). In material terms, moderns certainly have been entrusted with much. Those first disciples waited for the promised return but they grew weary looking for signs. How goes it with us—are we vigilant? In the absence of clear signs around us today, what are we doing about, say, the unmistakable fact that materially there are people who are outsiders? Are we the ones in charge ... to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? (v.42c). If we are, what do we do when such a task seems overwhelming, unending? We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at 847.382.2148. Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at 847.382.5300. Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
