The God We Can Know
Last night as I was tucking our daughter into bed,
she asked me: “Mom, have you ever wondered what
God is like? How do you picture God in your head?”
What great questions! They are questions that both
children and adults wonder about.
The Bible is filled with stories of people attempting
to know God. The Old Testament has many stories
about people trying hard to find God, like with the
tower of Babel. Or even people running from God in
the case of Jonah.
Again and again, the Bible tells us that God is a God
we can know and even a God who wants to know us.
God wants to be recognized. We see this from the
very beginning of creation. God wanted to be known
by Adam and Eve. They didn’t have to look for God.
Even when they tried to hide, God came looking for
them.
We encounter this reality fully through Jesus. As
Matthew 1:23 tells us, ‘”Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and they shall name him Emmanuel,’ which means ‘God with us.”’ In Jesus, we
encounter God in the flesh; God with us in person.
I want to share with you one of my favorite stories
that gives us a sneak peek into what God is like. It’s
an old story about a young boy who walked into a
pet shop one day to buy a puppy. This little boy carefully looked at each of the puppies, held them, and
played with them. He finally decided which puppy
he wanted to take home. The puppy he chose happened to have a misshapen leg.
The owner of the pet shop tried to change the little
boy’s mind. He said, “Son, it’s hard for this puppy to
even stand. He may never be able to run or play
fetch with you. It’s okay if you want to pick another
puppy.”
Then, the little boy hiked up his pant leg which revealed a prosthetic leg. And he said, “Nope, this is
the one for me. I know what it’s like not to be able
to run or play. I’ll really be able to help him.”
In Jesus, we know that God understands our challenges. Jesus says to us, “I know what it’s like to
hurt. I know what it’s like to receive news that a
friend has died. I know what it’s like to be betrayed
1
Volume 62, Issue 03
by someone you love. I know what it’s like to be misunderstood. I know what it’s like to suffer. I know
what it’s like to die, I’ll be really able to help you.”
The Almighty is a God we can know and who knows
us. This Lent, how will you get to know God better?
It is my hope and prayer for all of us that we would
grow to know God more deeply each and every day.
In Ministry Together,
Pastor Sara
For Lent this year, Artist Doris Armstrong is painting a
masterpiece. Every week she will add something new in
the painting, just as we
discover something new
about this God we can
know. On Easter, we will
unveil her finished masterpiece! This is our first
glimpse!
P.S. It’s important that I keep growing in my faith as
well. One of the ways that I grow in my faith is
through reading. I know there are other readers in our
church. Every month, I will be sharing with you what
your pastor is reading.

Join us this Lenten season for our series “The God
We Can Know”. This is a series based on the book
of John and the famous “I Am” statements of Jesus.
This series will take a deeper look at each of the
sayings and what Jesus meant by the words.
During this time we are also offering Bible studies
that correspond to the series and lets you learn
even more about the sayings.
Studies are being offered at the following times at
the church:
Sundays @ 9:00 am – Chapel
Tuesdays @ 6:00 pm – Lounge
Thursdays @ 10:00 am – Fellowship Hall
We are also offering an online version this year.
If you are not able to make it to any of the above
times, this is a great opportunity for you to participate!
Enroll as an individual at thegodwecanknow.com.
Once you have set up a profile and enter the payment page, click on redeem coupon and enter the
code “TGWCKELISSA”. This will allow you to access
the class for free. If you have problems or questions, please contact Elissa Hohbach, Adult and
Youth Ministry Coordinator at 886-4427,

ACH Giving—Testimonial
Jeri Larson is an on-line contributor to
First UMC on a monthly basis. She said,
“It’s easy and I won’t forget.” It did
bother her not putting her contribution into the offering plate,
so she’s glad she can place the available laminated offering card
into the offering plate. She inquired about signing up, then decided she could do it herself and it went fine with no problems.
Since she banks on-line, she can see her withdrawals. Jeri said,
“I want the church to know they can count on my regular contribution. It helps with the budget”.
If you are interested in online giving, you may request a paper
form from the church office 605-886-4427, or visit our web
site www.watertownfirstumc.com where
you can click and enter your information.
March Macaroni and Cheese What kid doesn’t love mac and cheese? The PACH Program sends home
individual packets, microwaveable cups, and boxes of macaroni and cheese. We have found that the cost of
the boxes is actually lower per serving than the smaller units, and can feed more than one child in the family.
You can leave your donation of macaroni and cheese on the table at the back of the church.
During the 2012-2013 school year, FUMC donated over 450 packages of Mac and Cheese. During the 2013-2014
school year we doubled that number and brought in over 900 packages!

Hello from the Nursery! We've had a lot of fun in the month of February exploring God’s
Love. Some of our activities included molding hearts in edible sand, painting surprise hearts,
making sun catcher hearts, and singing Jesus Loves Me. We talked about spending time with
God in prayer, Jesus loves us and forgives us, you are special to God, love and obey your parents
because God loves you, pray every day, and pray together in God’s house.
We are excited about our new series about Easter. We will be exploring serving others, to be
humble and grateful for Jesus’ sacrifice, Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and Jesus is risen.
Our faith word for the month is Easter. Come and join us in the Nursery as we explore Easter.

For Lent this year, Artist Doris Armstrong
is painting a masterpiece. Every week she
will add something new in the painting,
just as we discover something new about
this God we can know. On Easter, we will
unveil her finished masterpiece! This is
our first glimpse!
Sunday, March 15—2:00 pm - UMW General Meeting
Thad Titze will speak about his experiences in Hungary
This is not just for UMW ladies, everyone is invited to attend.
