Russ wrote: “In recognition of our golden anniversary as an independent diocese of the central coast, Bishop Garcia has commissioned a commemorative book titled The History of the Diocese Monterey. I was able to preview a draft copy of this publication recently and it will be a beautiful addition to any home library. The quality of printing and binding is exceptional. The book contains a full history of the Church in California, our Catholic schools and religious orders, and an account of the establishment of every parish our in diocese. The cost of this volume is $35 and it will be available in either English or Spanish. We must preorder, as there will be only one publishing. It would be helpful to know of your interest. If you notify the parish office that you wish to receive a copy of The History of the Diocese of Monterey, we will reserve a copy for you which you may purchase upon delivery, estimated to be September-October 2016.“ As he stated, we must pre-order, so if you are interested in reserving a copy, please contact the Parish Office before they are all gone..... “Start by doing what is necessary; then do what is possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible” www.missionsanluisobispo.org Parish Staff & Ministries The History of the Diocese Monterey Finance Council Gayla Newman Ann Palmer Charles Porter Andy Carlin Chris Will Schools & Campus Ministry Old Mission School (543-6019) Ms. Tina Ballantyne, Principal 761 Broad St., SLO 93401 www.oldmissionschool.com Mission College Preparatory (543-2131) Mr. James D. PAGE 3 Mass Intentions R EFLECTION OF THE WEEK July 10, 2016 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus was tested by a lawyer who wanted to prove that he was a good person. Assuming that he knew the answer, he asked Jesus what one must do to have eternal life. Jesus coaxed from the man what was the greatest commandment: To love our neighbor as we love ourselves. But the man asked Jesus to define neighbor. Jesus explained who our neighbors are by telling the story we know as the ÒGood Samaritan.Ó In a land where Samaritans were despised, a man traveling on a road fell into the hands of robbers who beat and robbed him. Two people who would have been expected to stop, a Levite and a priest, actually passed the man by leaving him for dead. A Samaritan, however, stopped and tended to him, took him to a safe place and paid for his care. The point of Jesus’ story was not so much who the neighbor was but how the lawyer should have responded as a neighbor Reflection question: Adult: When have you gone out of your way to help a stranger in need? Child: Would you help a new student who needed help? Why or why not? Join us to learn what our new projects are, and what you can do to help. Congratulations to our Old Mission pastor, Father Russell Brown, for an inspirational interview in the current Journal Plus publication. Fr. Russ was selected by the Executive Director of the Downtown Association to give his views on being the pastor in the middle of an urban center. Starting with a beautiful view of the Mission garden and the historic bells, the article describes Fr. Russ as a “seeker of truth” and explores the winding path Fr. Russ walked on his way to becoming our pastor. He describes the importance of being in the middle of the community -- from the altar, he can see all four doors which lead to different parts of the community. The interviewer concluded with praise for such a “great man” and saying how refreshing it is to have a man like Father Russ preaching the things most important to preserving humanity. We are blessed with a wonderful pastor. Coincidentally, on the very next page, Deacon Jim Burrows is featured in an article on his “other career” -- landscape architecture. “Father, let the light of your truth guide us to your kingdom through a world filled with lights contrary to your own.” - Alternative Opening Prayer for the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pray the Rosary With Us Every MONDAY evening at 5:45 pm, we pray the Rosary. Share devotions and petitions while praying as a spiritual community in our historic Old Mission CHAPEL. Please join us and stay for one or more decades of the rosary. Ave Maria, Friends! —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
