The Power of Holiness
December 28, 2014 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The Steward My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all the peoples. -- Luke 2:30-31 The Power of Holiness By Fr. Rodlin Rodigue, Associate Pastor There is something terrifying about holiness. Holiness comes from the word “holy” which means the state of being holy. It means purity; freedom from sin; sanctity; sacredness; immaculate and complete. Holiness has the power to shake the core of our being because it is something which goes beyond understanding. It has the power to transform us and turn us into new creation. When Mary received “the word” that she was chosen to be the mother of the Son of God, she was terrified. The call to holiness shook her to the depth of her being. Likewise for Joseph, being chosen to be the father of Jesus was something terrifying. Even though holiness can be terrifying, there is some peace to it; there is some joy to it when we say “Yes” to this call with all our heart. The “Yes“ of Mary and Joseph to God opens the door of holiness to the whole nation of Israel and to the whole world. With the “Yes“ of the Holy Family, whose feast we celebrate today, heaven and earth meet and give our lives new meaning. Her openness to God’s Word leads us to a new journey, a new covenant, a new freedom. Her “Yes” reshapes our relationship with God. The old covenant that God made through Moses with the Israelites required regular animal sacrifices. God lived among his people in the Holy of Holies. In Scripture, the Holy of Holies is the innermost apartment of the Jewish tabernacle or temple, where the arc of the covenant was kept, and where no person entered, except the high priest, once a year. The Holy Family’s “Yes” to God changed everything. Everything changed when God took flesh through the incarnation of Jesus and dwelled among us. Jesus became the Holy of Holies. In other words, God’s throne in heaven became accessible to all believers. Jesus atoned, once and for all, for the sinfulness of the whole humanity. Mary opens the gate of redemption and salivation for us. She gives us a new beginning through her “Yes to God” ”But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9) All of this becomes possible through Mary. The same way Mary was opened to God’s word with trust and humility, so, too, are we called to open our hearts to let God work through us to build his kingdom here on earth. Even though our journey of faith is challenging, terrifying at times, we are called to walk in her footsteps. We are urged to be as holy as the Holy Family, to be hopeful, to be faithful, and in this way we will experience the power of holiness which is true peace. Fr. Calling All Young Singers All young singers are invited to become part of our parish youth choirs. This year we have split the larger group into two smaller groups by grade level. Children's Choir: Grades 2 & 3 The Children's Choir introduces its members to the rich tradition of Catholic music. The choir sings at least once per month at the 9:00am or 10:30am mass. All children of the parish in grades 2 & 3 are invited to join this group. Youth Schola: Grades 4 to 8 The Youth Schola has a special focus in exploring more advance music, harmony, and foreign language. The schola sings at least once per month at the 9:00am or 10:30am mass. All young singers in grades 4 to 8 are invited to join this group. December 28, 2014 Please join us for these celebrations of the gift of music! Season of Love Musical Theater Revue Coming February 2015 Parish Adult Choir Family-Friendly Schedule! The Parish Adult Choir needs new members, especially talented parents from our school and Religious Ed. The rehearsal schedule has been CHANGED to help accommodate our parents’ busy schedules! Instead of rehearsing every Wednesday at 7:30pm, the choir now rehearses only two Wednesdays a month at 7:00pm. All other rehearsals have been moved to 9am on Sunday morning. We alternate between the 9am and 10:30am masses. F.A.Q. Q: What if I cannot make it to every single rehearsal or mass? A: We still need you! We are happy to have you, even if you can only sing one Sunday per month. Q: Do I need to read music to join? A: Though music reading is helpful it is not required. All that is required is the ability to carry a tune and a willingness to learn. Basic note-reading will be taught at rehearsal. Q: Do I need to pass an audition? A: No auditions necessary! Simply come to our next rehearsal. All you need to bring is yourself and a love of music. All music and materials will be provided. You are also guaranteed to have a lot of fun! parish.stbenedict.com page 8 In Our Prayers Masses for the Week Please Pray for Healing Please call Elizabeth Kustusch at 773-509-3806 to add your name or the name of an immediate family member for whom you would like the parish to pray for healing.
