Going undercover couldn’t
be simpler. By stripping to
swimming trunks or bikinis and mixing with bathers,
the Rio de Janeiro police
will combat beach crime.
As part of a wider plan
for beach security in Rio,
men and women from the special undercover unit will infiltrate among
bathers. ‘‘They
will be in swimwear, unarmed, monitoring
eventual formations of drug traders, beach robbers
or any kind of disturbances, and inform uniformed
beach police,’’ says a security spokesperson.
Violence in Rio’s teeming
shanty towns makes it one
of the world’s
most violent cities. Now, of

Bollywood will declare war
at the box-office! Yes, with a
number of movies on Kargil
in the pipeline, atleast Rs 150

a crowd-puller reel war is.
First past the post will be

‘Operation Vijay’. Farhan
Akhtar’s Lakshya features
Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik
and Preity and bears a price
tag of Rs 35 crore. Then, Anil
Sharma’s Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon has a
budget of Rs 40 crore.
So, why is Kargil the object of Bollywood’s affection?
Dhoop

‘‘Kargil came alive for all of
us because it was the first
war to be covered extensively. Everyone felt the pain of
the families who lost their
sons in the battlefield,’’ says
trade analyst Indu Mirani.
Adds distributor Shyam
Shroff, ‘‘Movies have been
made on wars 25 years after
they were fought and still been successful. Kargil is very
recent in this regard.’’ As for
too many films on the same
theme eating into each other,
director Anil Sharma rules
out the possibility: ‘‘Well-made war films always strike a
chord with the audience.’’
However, war movies, says distributor Sanjay Mehta,
aren’t everybody’s cup of
tea. ‘‘War is is a difficult genre to attempt and such movies need to be made in as realistic a manner as possible.’’
Meanwhile, the stage is
set for a reel recreation of
war. Question is, the enemy
was conquered but will the
box- office yield?

at the planetarium. Adds Ratnashree, ‘‘This phenomena has historical
importance. In the past, it was used
to measure the distance of the sun

from exhibitions, we plan to organise events at which schoolchildren
can scientifically measure the distance between Earth and Venus.’’
By the way, those who miss out on

A
li Azmat, 33 of the popular Sufi
band of the 1990s, Junoon, that rendered the passionate song Sayonnee, is exploring new dimensions in
music. About his band in which he
performed for nearly 14 years before
branching out as a solo singer, Ali says,
‘‘Junoon stands for obsessive, compulsive
behaviour which stems from the basic human psyche. And that’s how I went about
naming our band Junoon —
the passion being evident in
our songs.’’
Music was a junoon with Azmat ever since
he can remember! Born in Abtabad, Ali
moved to Peshawar for a year and later to Lahore where he spent his early years. ‘‘I wanted to be a guitarist which made me join a
band called Jupiter in the 1980s.’’ Post which
Ali left for Australia to complete his education in business studies. And upon his return,
formed the band of the trio called Junoon.
Besides singing, Azmat has also acted in
tele-serials in Lahore and performed in a
sitcom in New York. He has also been in-
volved with theatre in Lahore. However, his
latest avataar saw him recording his first
song ever for a Bollywood film — ‘‘Pooja
Bhatt’s directorial debut Paap for which I
have crooned the song Garaj garaj sawan
ghir aayo, picturised on John Abraham in
the film,’’ informs Ali, describing the experience as ‘‘exciting.’’ And Pooja, according
to him ‘‘is a great and professional filmmaker.’’
Ask him how did the project materialise and he says,
‘‘Former VJ Munish Makhija,
now married to Pooja Bhatt whom I had met
at one of the channel’s functions came up
with the offer and I liked it,’’ says Ali.
Besides playback singing for Bollywood
which Ali is now considering, there is something else that is keeping him busy. His
world tour! And he is enjoying it more so
‘‘because I love performing in front of a live
audience,’’ says he. There is more coming
from Ali as he plans to launch his solo album Pappu Yaar this month.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) Recent discussions and
developments give you good reason to feel optimistic
about your plans. While you can take things further, it
would be a mistake to assume that there’s smooth
sailing ahead. In fact, not until the unsettling developments
triggered by Sunday’s lunar eclipse will you know the nature of
any potential obstacles.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) Being ruled by the
instinctively harmonious Venus, you’ve a talent for
bringing even the most troublesome of individuals
into line. But judging by the current planetary set-up,
there’s absolutely nothing you can say to calm certain individuals. Let them rant. In fact, encourage them. The more they say,
the sooner they’ll stop.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Tedious as various details
may be, you ignore them at your peril. Previously
you’ve found if you left such things until the last
minute, it became clear what was important and
what wasn’t. With continual changes over the coming weeks,
however, you’ll need to keep up to date on a variety of facts.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22) You’ve been avoiding
potentially contentious issues for fear of upsetting
the hard won equilibrium with loved ones. But it’s
becoming increasingly clear that these will need to
be reviewed in depth. Your choice, therefore, is to raise them
now, while you’re in control or risk having to tackle them at an
awkward moment.
LEO (July 23 - August 22) By now you’ve probably
realised that, whatever you do, somebody’s going to
object. But others insist that you ensure that your
support is solid before taking things to the next
stage. However, that would mean wasting a lot of time with
un-cooperative individuals. Move swiftly now and deal with any
objections later.
VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) Making plans
when the person you’re dealing with refuses to
recognise certain fundamental facts isn’t easy. But
that’s exactly what you’re facing. Waste no time trying clarifying things; events over the next few weeks should accomplish that. Instead arrange whatever you can, simply working around the issues about which they’re so ill-informed.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) While under
certain circumstances, surprises can add a little
spice to romances, that doesn’t mean you’re happy
about what others have been up to. You’re being
gracious, but their antics have undermined your trust. This may
not be the ideal moment to discuss issues, but sooner or
later you’ll have to talk.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Upsetting as
the antics of loved ones are, things aren’t what they
seem. However convinced you are that you’ve all the
facts, you’d be well advised to suspend all judgement for a few days. Once you learn about the pressures they’ve
been facing, you’ll exchange your irritation with them for feelings
of compassion.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21) Pay
close attention to what seem unimportant exchanges.
In some cases persistent problems could be cleared
up with only a few words. In others ideas that spring
from discussions could turn into something very exciting indeed.
In every case, it’s vital that you keep a keen eye, however dull
the subject seems to be.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) There’s little point in disagreeing with those who aren’t listening anyway. But you can’t really allow things to go
further without at least letting others know where
you stand. The irony is, if you approach your discussions from
with the attitude that you’re simply expressing your opinions,
you’re more likely to be listened to.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) It’s been an
awkward past few days. Either others were in a
difficult mood or circumstances caused serious problems. In any case, they’ve blamed you for everything.
This isn’t fair, but there’s little point arguing. Apologise now. Then
when others are viewing things more rationally, it’s them who’ll
be doing the apologising.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20) You’ve probably
already figured out that others’ current difficult
mood has nothing to do with people or practical
matters. On the contrary, they’re angry with
themselves, and are looking for somebody else to blame. If
you’re feeling you must be helpful and get in their way, the
person being blamed could be you.

INTERNET HUMOUR
The kindergarten class had a homework assignment to find out
about something exciting and relate it to the class the next day.
When the time came for the little kids to give their reports, the
teacher was calling on them one at a time.
The teacher was reluctant to call upon little Johnnie, knowing
that he sometimes could be a bit crude. But eventually his turn
came. Little Johnnie walked up to the front of the class, and with
a piece of chalk, made a small white dot on the blackboard, then
sat back down.
Well the teacher couldn’t figure out what Johnnie had in mind for
his report on something exciting, so she asked him just what that
was. ‘‘It’s a period.’’Johnnie explained. ‘‘Well I can see that,’’ she
said, ‘‘but what is so exciting about a period?’’
‘‘Damned if I know,’’ said Johnnie, ‘‘but this morning my
sister said she missed one. Then Daddy had a heart attack and
Mommy fainted.’’

E
ven the seemingly perfect marriages have
trouble or so it seems going
by the recent reports concerning David Beckham
and his pop-star wife Victoria Beckham. Apparently,
the Real Madrid Football
star is livid with his wife for
seeing a little too much of
her new ‘‘producer’’ American rapper Damon Dash.
The Grammy award winning rapper is the cofounder of a US $200 million
rap music and fashion empire. There had been reports
of a rift earlier also when
David had apparently complained to friends about being lonely since Victoria
spends little time in Spain.
The ex Spice girl is spending
most of her spare time in
US, trying to breathe some
life into a musical career
that never really took off.
Last week, Victoria was
seen with Dash at least
twice in four days, but only
spent just three days with

A close friend reveals, ‘‘their
relationship is under increasing strain. The more
she sees Damon, the worse it
becomes.”
Last week, while Beckham was playing in Real
Madrid’s Champions
League win over
Partizan Belgrade a match in which he
injured his hamstring - Victoria was
eating with Dash at a
chic restaurant in London. They were then
together again less
than 48 hours
later.

doesn’t seem to be taking advice about Damon. Becks
has made it clear he’s not
happy with Victoria
spending so much
time with Damon, but she won’t
stop seeing him.’
Beckham
is
also worried that
Dash, whose stable of rappers are
known
for
their violent and expletivef i l l e d
lyrics,
is
ruining his
wife’s career by plotting her entry into the
US music
market as a
hip-hop artist.
He believes she
should instead
listen to her record
label, who want
her to return to
the pop and dance tracks
which made her famous as a
Spice Girl or risk having her
$4.4 million contract being
terminated.
Dash himself is unperturbed by these rumours
and dismisses them as
ridiculous. “I heard one rumour that Victoria is breaking up with David because
of her relationship with me.
That’s hilarious - not the last
time I looked. Me and David
are cool. If I’m going to
make a record with Victoria, then I’m going to spend
time with her in the studio. I
guess people see what they
want to see.”
While her career may be
in freefall, her husband does
not seem to have too much
concern over where his next
cheque’s coming from.
The England captain has
racked up a massive bill in
the five-star Madrid hotel
where he has been staying
since August, the search for
a mansion still being on.

In 2002, Ashanti published
her first book of poetry and
essays Foolish/Unfoolish: Reflections On Love through Hyperion. Her endearment to the
term foolish is understood
since it was the same song
that drove her debut album to
the top of the charts.
But the singer who is ruling
the music world right now
was not an overnight sensation. She had a number of
false starts on her road to success.
Subsequent hit singles
from Ashanti, Baby and Happy further cemented her stardom, as did several high-profile nominations and awards.
Although she failed to win
best new artist, her debut album was named best contemporary R&B album at the
Grammy awards in 2003.
With the release of Chapter
II in July 2003, Ashanti set out
to prove that her earlier success was no fluke and has
done so.
