Love affair overrides harassment suit
Love’s got everything to do
with it. A 24-year-old secretary in California who had sued
her boss Ron Edwards for $ 35,000
on charges of sexual harassment
has had to return
every penny because the two have
begun dating.
After Alice McCurdy pressed charges of
sexual harassment against

ar, Edwards was required
to pay McCurdy $ 35,000 as
damages for ‘‘causing her mental
agony.’’
Subsequently,
McCurdy and Edwards have patched up to the extent
that an office romance is blooming.
McCurdy has now
returned what she
received as damages. Well,
it looks like this love affair

2,000 NRIs and PIOs (people of
Indian origin) from all corners
of the globe are all set to converge on
the Capital for the three-day Pravasi Bhartiya Divas summit starting tomorrow. Apart from presenting a chance for
a meeting of minds across geographical boundaries, this mega meet promises
to be value for money — atleast for fivestar hotels in the city, which are readying to put up ‘houseful’ signs once these
international Indians arrive.
‘‘Although our hotel isn’t in the vicinity of the venue Vigyan Bhawan, certain delegates from Singapore and the US
have made bookings. The last week of
December and the first week of January registered low occupancy rates for
us. Now, thanks to a number of conferences — of which the pravasi meet is
the most prominent — bookings are as
high as 80 per cent. We expect this figure to go up even higher,’’ reveals Radisson GM Ronnie Lobo. With this sentiment being expressed by other luxury hotels in the city, it’s clearly boom time again for the hotel industry.
Informs FICCI’s Gautam Ghose, who
is overseeing the staying arrangements
of the delegates, ‘‘This time round, Vigyan Bhawan is the conference venue
and there is a rush to book rooms at hotels in its proximity. While certain delegates have already
arrived and are sta-

■ 2,000 NRIs & PIOs from 60 countries

now, it can only get better as the pravasi

Bahrain and Mongolia,’’ he says.
While PM Atal Behari Vajpayee will
inaugurate the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas
celebrations at IG indoor stadium on
January 9, subsequent sessions will be
convened at Vigyan Bhawan. The deputy PM, the Union ministers for external
affairs, finance and education, and several CMs will be key speakers during
the three-day conference. ‘‘The meet includes sessions on knowledge-based industries, tourism, international trade,
health care, science and technology, infrastructure and education. The Pravasi
Bhartiya Samman Awards will also be
presented during the meet,’’ says Vivek
Bharti, advisor to FICCI and coordinator of the Pravasi Bhartiya summit.
A highlight of the event is the cultural evenings, during which 5,000 years of
Indian shringar parampara will be showcased through a unique blend of the
spiritual and the sensual. Officially-speaking, the focus of the conference is on
the Gen Next of pravasis. ‘‘We want this
generation to know about the country
of their origin, its culture and people,’’
says Bharti, ‘‘This will go a long way in
strengthening bonds between NRIs,
PIOs and India.’’ After all, irrespective
of wherever an Indian might be on the
globe, phir bhi dil hai Hindustani.

n her world, differences between people
are all in the mind. ‘‘Ideologies might differ, but there are striking similarities between
the language, culture and food of India and
Pakistan,’’ says designer Shaiyanne Malik,
who has made a historic trip across geographical boundaries by boarding the first PIA flight from Karachi to Mumbai in two years.
While this trip is not
Shaiyanne’s first passage to India —it is certainly a special visit. ‘‘Earlier, I have been to
India on work. This time round, hearing that
air links between the two countries were being restored, I decided to enjoy a vacation in
India with my family. We were accorded a rousing reception when we landed,’’ she shares.
Shaiyanne is optimistic about the improved Indo-Pak relations, ‘‘I hope the present bonhomie lasts. Bilateral ties mean so much to
all of us. If the two countries talk more on ec-
onomics than political boundaries, it will do
everyone a world of good.’’
Incidentally, Shaiyanne’s playwright husband Sohail Malik traces his roots to India.
‘‘Sohail’s great grandfather is from Meerut
and I have even spent time there at his ancestral home. As of now, he is looking for locations in Delhi to stage his latest play Shayad Isi
Ka Naam Hai Shaifta,’’ she informs.
Having made her mark in bridal-wear, the
designer in Shaiyanne has now made a foray
into casual-wear and
pret lines. ‘‘Back home,
whenever there is need
for traditional designs in TV plays, people
think of me.’’ While Shaiyanne has just finished designing for the play Anarkali, Through
The Eyes Of Noorjehan, she sees scope for her
work in India. ‘‘It would be nice to design for
Indian film stars — they are big names in Pakistan and across the globe.’’ Because geography might think otherwise, but art — and Shaiyanne’s heart — know no boundaries.

‘Dark Angel,’ at 2100
Hrs. on Star World
ARIES (March 20 - April 18) Working on plans with
others has been as rewarding as it’s been challenging. You’ve learned a great deal, strengthened your
relationship and overcome obstacles. Now unexpected offers or opportunities have suddenly appeared. Thrilling as
they are, they’d mean reorganising plans. Don’t be surprised if
others’ initial reaction isn’t entirely positive.

TAURUS (April 19 - May 19) You suspect that
opportunities are as good as they seem, but finding
out more about them it has been surprisingly
difficult, resulting in feelings of wariness. This is
no surprise, since with Mercury only just having ended its
retrograde cycle as of the 6th, all manner of confusing situations
are still being untangled.
GEMINI (May 20 - June 20) Talking about moving is
one thing. Actually making changes in your living circumstances is quite another. Yet the ideas or offers
that have come your way recently are so exciting than
you’re tempted to take them to the next stage. You’ve nothing to
lose and everything to gain by exploring them further.
CANCER (June 21 - July 21) Intriguing discussions
with others haven’t just been worthwhile, they’ve
given your spirits a boost just when they needed it.
At this point it’s difficult to say just how far these
ideas will go. Nevertheless, the simple process of evaluating the
potential that various options offer opens up a whole new realm
of possibilities.
LEO (July 22 - August 21) Absorbing as your life is,
you’re feeling restless. It’s not that what you’re
doing and those you’re spending your time with
aren’t rewarding. Rather, the simple fact is that
you feel the need to broaden your horizons. This needn’t be
complicated. All that’s necessary is that you be willing to take
chances on the unknown.
VIRGO (August 22 - September 21) As the new year
began, you promised yourself that you wouldn’t
become overcommitted. But you already have too
much to do. Analyse those obligations, listing those
that benefit you versus the ones that are in the interests of
others. And then, of the latter, consider carefully which could
easily be deleted from that list.
LIBRA (September 22 - October 22) You seem to be
facing demand on several fronts. While most are exciting enough to justify the work they require, you’re
being forced to curtail time with loved ones, which
you’re not happy about. Explain in detail what you’re doing and
why. Not only will they understand, they’ll support you to the hilt.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 20) Having
struggled long and hard to get others to go along
with your plans or ideas, you’re not going to
welcome even the most modest of alterations. But
once you learn more about what’s arisen, you may well change
your mind. In fact you’ll recognise these are better than anything
you’d imagined possible.
SAGITTARIUS (November 21 - December 20) Usually
you’re tolerant of others’ foibles. But now certain individuals seem determined to turn crises into dramas
of epic proportions. The last thing you need to deal
with are scenes of an emotional nature. However, since there’s
little hope of avoiding these, you may as well listen to all their
anxieties, worries and complaints.
CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19) As far as
you’re concerned, even the trickiest of issues can be
settled without indulging in emotional detours. But
others have made it abundantly clear that they disagree. Forget about your hopes of keeping things on an even
keel. Instead simply allow them to express their feelings fully and
be done with it.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) While there
are certain individuals whose guidance and advice
you’d trust, whatever they said, you’re cautious in
your dealings with most people. At the moment, however, you’ve no choice but to allow others to make important
business or financial decisions on your behalf. Unsettling as this
is, they have your best interests to heart.
PISCES (February 19 - March 19) You hate to bother
others. But if you don’t do exactly that, particularly
when it comes to financial matters, certain important
things will simply never get done. They may say that
they’re too busy or have forgotten. Speak up and you’ll ensure
that they’ve no justification for any such excuses.

The traveller knocked on the door of the house where a
cabdriver had told him he could be sexually accommodated.
An eye-level panel slid open and a female voice asked what
he wanted.
‘‘I want to get screwed,’’ said the man.
‘‘OK, mister, but this is a private club, so slip twenty bucks as an
initiation fee through the mail slot,’’ answered the voice.
The man did this, the panel was closed, minutes passed.
Nothing happened. He began to pound on the door insistently,
and the panel slid open.
‘‘Hey,’’ exclaimed the sport, ‘‘I want to get screwed!’’
‘‘What?’’ said the voice, ‘‘Again?’’

Soham Shah has been working on his
screenplay for a year. It will probably be
a songless thriller. Then there will be my
own directorial venture which I will start
in 2004 and release in 2005.
What will you direct next?
„ I definitely don’t want to make something within my comfort zone. So far,
my films have reflected my own
thoughts on relationships and
human emotions. Now I want to

Shah Rukh and I
work so well together
because we care so
deeply for each other
in real life. Creativity
compounded with
brotherly love cannot go wrong. If you
ask me, I’m happy
piggybacking on his
stardom. There can
never be an ego between us.
I know only too
well that he’s successful way beyond I can
ever be. Stars don’t
get any bigger than Shah Rukh Khan or
Amitabh Bachchan. Once a film-maker
accepts that, the ego never comes in the
way. I am happy God has given me Shah
Rukh to attain success. Three blockbusters... what’s next?
„ I have to sustain my production houses’
reputation. I intend to produce films that I don’t necessarily write or direct. Nikhil
Advani is making another,
very different film for us.

Bips disappoints fans
ipasha’s fans are in for a
major disappointment as
her latest flick Ishq Hai Tumse
is not even worth a watch.
Another reason for its bombing at the box-office is,
Bips cannot be seen prancing around in skimpy outfits and leaves her fans
yearning for more. The
chemistry between
the lead pair, Dino
Morea and Bipasha, seems to have
fizzled out. The
film does not
even touch
the hearts
of the viewers.

Pakistani TV channels

And, in keeping with the
spirit of the ongoing
SAARC summit, a Pakistani channel recently
showed Shah Rukh

for the first time in that
country. Thus, Shah
Rukh becomes the first
Indian star to have his
film screened after the

Raghu Romeo wows critics!
T
he Rajat Kapoor directed movie Raghu
Romeo, which won the Best Film Award at the
MAMI film festival recently, is the story of a waiter called Raghu who works in a dance bar which is
the den of some suspicious characters. Raghu is
mistreated constantly and is a misfit in a world
that is simply noisy and chaotic. Amidst all this
chaos, however, Raghu manages to remain sane because of his inspiration, a godmother who is just a
character named Neetaji in a TV show. One fine
day, Raghu discovers that
someone is trying to kill Neetaji. Does he manage to save
her? You’ll find out soon
enough when the film releases
in theatres in India this April.
Vijay Raaz (of Monsoon Wedding fame) plays Raghu.

Dutta’s clock work
A
fter a voluntary 17-minute reduction in the playing-time of
his war epic JP Dutta has now
snipped off another 28 minutes of
playing time from LoC. According
to grapevine in Bollywood, the reduction in playing time is a measure of Dutta’s and the film-trades
insecurity about the war epic.
