DON’T MISS THE SHOW THAT’S

NEAR YOU (PART 2 OF 2)
Don’t you get bored just sitting there in the
woods for hour after hour? That is a frequent
question hunters often receive from non-hunters
when they share stories of days afield in search
of deer, turkey, and other elusive game. It is also
a fair question since many days a hunter comes
home empty-handed. However, a full game pouch
or filled tag is not the only measure of a high quality day outdoors. The unique sights and sounds
are what keep hunters heading out for more,
provide fodder for interesting stories, and create
memories that last a lifetime. Let me share an example from the recent 2014 Spring Turkey season
opening to provide some perspective.
Rolling out of bed at 4:15 AM was no problem as
anticipation ran high and I was in my carefully selected position before 5:30 AM on the opening day
of Spring Turkey. My quarry did not disappoint as
a gobbler burst forth at 5:46 AM with his hearty
vocalizations welcoming the new day. Unfortunately, he was over 1⁄2 mile away on private property on the opposite side of the Shenango River,
so I could only sit there in the darkness enjoying
his emphatic gobbling. Legal shooting hours on
May 3rd started at 5:56 AM, the standard 30 minutes before sunrise, and the low light brought my
first encounter of the morning, an excellent view
of a Cooper’s hawk. The agile woodland accipiter
landed almost directly above me, perching there
for over a minute as it eagerly searched for prey.
It departed as silently as it had arrived to continue
its perpetual quest for its next meal. Set up only
30 yards above some flooded timber, a small, gregarious flock of eight wood ducks paddled around
enjoying their secluded 100 yard by 30 yard shallow pool.
Ever vigilant, they exhibited the fascinating behavior of always having two “lookouts” posted up
in the trees while the others frolicked. These rotating “sentries” would frequently respond to my
turkey calling and periodically flew closer to view
my turkey decoy. One brazen male landed on an
overhead branch only five yards away, providing
a great view of his vibrant plumage. Their close
proximity and watchful eyes kept me hyper vigilant. Around 9:45 AM, my patience was rewarded
when an immature red-tailed hawk landed only
ten yards away to consume his breakfast, an unfortunate meadow vole that he swallowed hole.
Even though it threatened rain all morning and a
gobbler failed to present himself, I was rewarded
with excellent views of Canada geese, mallards,
a great blue heron, woodpeckers, and a vast array of songbirds. (The proper visual identification
of our many songbirds is tough enough, but I’ve
found correctly identifying unseen species solely
by their calls and vocalizations is a continuous
learning process.) My repetitive wildlife sightings
made the entire time afield very enjoyable and
truly memorable.
The secret of successful wildlife viewing for both
hunters and non-hunters alike is patience. When
you first enter the woods, birds and mammals
will know you are there. However, after remaining quiet and motionless for 10 to 15 minutes, the
woods will begin to come alive around you. Effective camouflage and a comfortable seat cushion
play a part in your statuesque vigil, but it is primarily motion that gives away your presence to
cautious wildlife, so make movements very slow
and deliberate. Let your eyes do the searching,
not the turning of your head. Before you know it,
you will quickly learn that it is the slightest movement by wildlife that immediately catches your
eye giving away their presence. Binoculars, field
guides, and smart phone applications can add to
the wonder as you become an active participant
in nature’s ongoing display that’s new each time

POACHED PEAR SURPRISE
4 medium ripe pears
1 C. water
1/2 C. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/3 C. finely chopped walnuts
2 Tbsp. confectioners sugar
1 tsp. milk
CHOCOLATE SAUCE:
1/3 C. water
1/3 C. sugar
1/4 C. butter or margarine
1 1/3 C. semisweet chocolate chips
Fresh mint, optional
Core pears from bottom, leaving stems intact. Peel
pears. Cut 1/4” from bottom to level if necessary. In a
saucepan, bring water and sugar to a boil. Add pears;
reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes or
until tender. Remove from the heat; stir vanilla into
sugar syrup. Spoon over pears. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Meanwhile, combine walnuts, confectioners sugar and milk; set aside. For chocolate
sauce, combine water, sugar and butter in a small
saucepan; bring to a boil. Remove from the heat;
stir in chocolate chips until melted. To serve, drain
pears well; spoon nut mixture into cavities. Place on
dessert plates; top with some of the chocolate sauce.
Insert a mint leaf near stem if desired. Serve with the
remaining chocolate sauce. Yield: 4 servings.
SWISS-ONION BREAD RING
2 1/2 tsp. poppy seeds, divided
1 tube (17.4 oz.) refrigerated white bread dough
1 C. (4 oz.) shredded Swiss cheese
3/4 C. sliced green onions
1/4 C. butter or margarine, melted
Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds in a greased 10”
fluted tube pan. Cut the dough into twenty 1” pieces; place half in prepared pan. Sprinkle with half of
the cheese and onions. Top with 1 teaspoon poppy
seeds; drizzle with half of the butter. Repeat layers.
Bake at 3750 for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
Immediately invert onto a wire rack. Serve warm.
Yield: 1 loaf.

ADHESIVES:
There are many types of adhesives to
choose from to put your scrapbook together. I can’t say this enough, it doesn’t
matter which type you choose to use but it
needs to be acid free. Some different types
are permanent adhesives, repositionable
adhesives and photo corners. Most of the
time you will want to use a permanent adhesive. They hold better than repositionable and corners. One very important
thing to take into consideration when
choosing your adhesive is whether or not
you want to place adhesive on the back of
your photo or other important items. If you
have old photos that are originals/only
copies, photo corners are the best solution
(if you don’t want adhesives on the back
of these). Permanent and repositionable
adhesives come in dry and wet types. Wet
types include glue, glue sticks, rubber cement, spray-on, etc. Dry adhesives include
double sided tape, tape runners, and Terrifically Tacky Tapes. Tacky Tape is used
more if you are placing fabrics, beads,
chipboard, or heavy items. And this type
of tape is very permanent. Some glues are
both permanent and repositionable. Most
of these glues when put on have a blue color. When you place the item when the glue
is blue, it will stick permanently. When you
wait until the glue loses the blue color, it
will be repositionable.
I personally use a Scotch ATG runner.
If you do a lot of scrapbooking, this is a
very good investment. They run about $40
for your initial investment and the refills
run about $10 for 72 ft. of acid free tape.
Another great item for small or detailed
items are the Xyron machines. These turn
papers into stickers.

Ordinarily, when I begin writing this column, I
don’t have a clear destination. I start with a subject
that is interesting, even if it’s only interesting to me,
and see where it leads.
I’ve never been much good at riddles but this
piece needs a starting point - What has two sides,
can swing, spin, or slide. It’s designed to keep something in or something out, but may keep nothing at
all. Need a hint? We walk by them and through them
every day. It’s time to acknowledge how useful they
are to us.
A door has an inside and an outside but a doorway
may have no door at all. A door may be used to block
access, stop light, quiet noise or interrupt air that is
too cold or too hot. A door may enhance the decorative style of a room or may prevent a most distracting
view of the adjoining one.
Doors first appear in paintings on Egyptian tomb
walls. The doors in King Solomon’s Temple were
made of carved Olive wood and inlaid with gold. One
door, found by archaeologists in Switzerland is over
5000 years old. In Kuffeir, Syria they found old doors
that were probably city entrance doors at one time.
They are almost 10 feet high and made of stone. The
Romans gave us our first bronze doors, which were
popular during Medieval times. Westminster Abbey
in jolly old England has a door that dates back to
1050.
My search for the largest door took a turn that I
didn’t anticipate. After exploring, with interest, the
array of artistic doors that were made through history, I found that the largest doors were modern.
There is no such thing as the largest door in history.
There are four identical doors that hold the record.
They belong to the Vehicle Assembly Building at
the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Each of these
doors measure 456 feet high.
I thought that agoraphobia was the fear of open
places, but apparently open doors qualify as well.
Some fear doors that are closed or are afraid that
they will stick shut, while many dislike being locked
in. Most are startled by doors that are shut loudly...
malicious or not.
Doors are patient but they like attention. They
like to be pulled and pushed and held. Doors don’t
usually need instructions to be operated properly.
They tend to live at peace with humankind. They
don’t seem to mind it if someone sticks their foot in
the door. They cooperate when being held for the
next person to pass through. But if they are ignored,
doors can be a stubborn sort. Once a door begins to
slide or swing it will travel as it wishes. If it’s opening
it may knock a passer-through over or crash harshly into a wall. A doorstop will only be effective to a
point. If the door is closing, fingers or hands might
not preclude the door’s inevitable path. One thing I
know from personal experience is that the meeting
of a solid core oak door and a mellon core cranium
will have an undesirable outcome. Careful, now.

More than 45 years ago, my father was wounded
while fighting in World War II, a conflict that
claimed at least 35 million lives. Millions of other
people around the world carry with them the lifelong, tragic consequences of international conflict.
Each family that remembers a lost son or daughter,
the casualty of war, and each veteran who must live
with the physical and emotional scars of battle is a
testament to mankind’s failure to achieve a lasting
peace on earth (Lk. 2:14). What went wrong? Why
are we still seeing bombings and shootings and
destruction of nations?
The men and women who fought for their country
are to be honored with gratitude. We must also
remember that any peace secured by guns can
never be permanent. That can only come when
the Prince of Peace rules the nations. But He must
be enthroned in our heart now. He brings us an
inner peace that comes from trust in God through
Christ. It is a peace with God—something that
even those who have faced the terrors of war can
experience.
One day when Christ returns, there will be worldwide peace. But for now, peace on earth comes to
one person at a time. Do you have that peace?

Peace that makes the Lord so precious,
