Dear Friends,
I write this letter to you reflecting on the upcoming 10th anniversary of the
9/11 attacks on our country. Like many churches around the nation,
Bakerstown at that time rallied to the cause of our nation with prayer and – as
is the Bakerstown tradition – action.
In the days following that terrorist act, Rev. David McDonald of our church
initiated contact with the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn,
New York. This began a partnership which resulted in Bakerstown donating
$9,519 to help with efforts in their demolished community. God richly blessed
that endeavor, and Rev. David Dyson of Lafayette Presbyterian reported back
to us by letter that the funds helped to provide direct aid to victims and their
families, small businesses, and more.
“We are so grateful for the role you have been able to play in the lives of
real people, who went to work on September 11th and had their whole
world turned upside down. Please know on this end that we will not
forget them nor will we let them want for what they need. May God’s
blessings be upon you for reaching across the miles and reminding
people in a very tangible way that love is more powerful than hate, that
the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not put it out.”

As we begin a new “church year” with Kick-Off Sunday and the anniversary
of 9/11, it is my prayer that each of us can take a moment to reflect on how
Bakerstown’s actions back then represent very much what God wants us to
continue to be for this community and our world: disciples of Jesus Christ.
This new “preaching year,” your pastors will be exploring the theme, “Dare to
be a Disciple.” As we will explore in various sermons throughout the year,
being a disciple of Jesus means knowing Him, His Word, His admonitions for
us, and responding with our whole selves – with all the knowledge, spiritual
gifts, personalities and experiences that He has given us.
Daring to be a disciple sometimes involves risks – such as the risk you all took
back in those dark days following 9/11 to come alongside a church on the
front lines. But as anyone involved with that effort back then will tell you,
taking that risk helps us to know and experience the power of the Holy Spirit
working through us and the knowledge that God is actually using us to be His
hands and feet, which is, after all, the greatest privilege any of us human
beings can have.

If you saw Flodene barreling toward North Park on a recent
Sunday morning, you could probably tell she was excited about the
great time she was about to have with her FPCB church family at
August 21st’s Church in the Park/Picnic. (As Pastor Dan said, “It’s
a good thing she didn’t get pulled over!”) Two hundred and seventy
people attended the event. See lots more pictures on page 9.
A Prayer Initiative
Devote yourselves to prayer (Col. 4:2)
A new prayer opportunity begins in September:
Prayer has always been a foundation and strength of this church,
and we hope to continue and encourage that heritage. On September
14 at 6 p.m., a new prayer group will have its first meeting. All the
church family is invited to participate in the Holy Huddle. How
appropriate that the Holy Huddle begins just 3 days after the 10th
anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy! Prayers for our nation, church,
community, and one another are sure to build up this body of faith
and help us to discern the will of the Lord for our church today,
tomorrow and forever. Initially the Holy Huddle is planned as a
once-a-month event, but it could be expanded. If you have
questions, see Dan Muttart or Karen Anderson.

lead four adult Sunday School classes about SHAPE on
September 25 & October 2, and on October 16 & 23.. On
October 9 everyone is invited to Fellowship Hall to join the
Session Committees for free refreshments at the Fall Fun
Fair. We hope that everyone learns more about themselves in
the SHAPE classes, and then finds a place for themselves in
the church at the Fair. Note: the Café will not be open on
October 9, but there will be plenty of food at the Fun Fair.

Bakerstown through small groups, usually about
8-10 people, with someone designated as group
coordinator. Each group then decides what activity they want to do. For example, museums, sporting events, concerts, local tours, eating at local
restaurants or someone’s house, etc.

TOPS! Take Off Pounds Sensibly
Creativity Group - Mondays at 10 a.m.
meets 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Westminster Room
You are invited to join the Bakerstown Creativity Group
(formerly known as Needle Workers) every Monday morning
from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Geneva Room. The name of the
group has been changed because we want you to know that you
are welcome to bring any kind of creative project to the group –
scrapbooking, basket weaving, jewelry making, etc. You can
come and leave anytime during the designated two hours. You
can bring a personal project or we can guide you in finding a
mission project to which you can donate your creations. For those
who knit or crochet, we have donated yarn that you are free to
use. About 11:00 a.m. we have a time of devotional reading and
prayer. This group is open to folks in the community as well as
church members. For information, call Karen Anderson at the

This year-round program works! Learn to lose weight
and keep it off, and receive support and encouragement
at the same time. Give it a try! All are welcome. New

with Dr. Darren W. Dubyak
Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m.
Fellowship Hall
Dr. Dubyak is Vice President of Lifestyle Innovations, a
web-based wellness program designed to improve doctor and patient outcomes in order to have patients have a
more active role in their health. Born and raised in
White Oak, PA, he attended the University of Pittsburgh
and received a B.S. in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training. In 2000 he enrolled at the National University of
Health Sciences in Chicago, IL where he obtained a
B.S. in Biology and a Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine. He has worked as a personal trainer and developed
exercise programs and diet analysis for his clients. He
comes highly recommended by members of our church.

Trash Pick-Up
Saturday, October 1 at 9 a.m.
Meet at the church rain or shine to collect trash from our
2-mile stretch of Route 8 & our Bakerstown/Red Belt
interchange. We provide safety vests, bags, and gloves.

Hard to believe that it is September already!!!! Where did the warmth of summer vacations go? I must
say it was a really, really hot summer this year. I am writing this in August and I bet it is still warm in
September. Still, we are very lucky in this temperate climate. We get to see the wonders of all four seasons!! I sometimes
wish that winter was a little shorter. How about you?
Stephen Ministry
Well, now it is time for us all to get back to working, going to school, and starting new experiences all around. Many new
classes will be starting and I am very excited. The new Stephen Ministers have worked very hard in class each week. In November, they will be commissioned. What a testament to the love of God, as each one of them has shared during and after
class. Keep them in your prayers.
Some good things, along with bad things, are happening in this world. All of the Stephen Ministers want you to know that we
are here. If you need someone to talk to, just let us know! Whatever is shared is kept in strict confidence. Sometimes it is hard
to share with someone else, but it can be necessary when the problem is too difficult to handle alone!! God has given us each
other to help one another. Always remember that God walks beside you as you face each challenge. There is a peace that can
be found only in listening to the quiet of God’s love. You can contact a Stephen Minister through Dan or Karen. You can also

Children’s Ministry
Kick-Off Sunday - A celebration to begin our 2011-12
year of Christian Education. On September 11 at 10
a.m. children and youth will meet in Fellowship Hall for
singing and a skit, while adults meet in the Colonial Room for
an overview of Adult Education. Free refreshments will be
available for all.
As we begin this school year, BPCC would like to welcome the 2011-2012 staff. God has richly blessed the preschool with a loving staff for our new school year: Kiki
Cherry, Cathy Collier, Marci Cyphert, Christina Dean,
Joan Grassucci, Beth Joyce, Brenda Joyce, Jane Mobley,
Susan Novelli, Leah Prasse, Michelle Repasky, Debbie
Smith, Bev Stone, and Robin Williams.
Bible Presentation to 3rd Graders. On October 23 at
both 8:45 & 11 a.m. worship services, we will recognize our
third graders at this milestone in their faith development.
Parents, please call the church office by October 1 and indicate
which service your child will attend and how you would like
their name inscribed in their Bible. There will be a meeting for
parents of third graders, Sunday, October 16, at 10 a.m.

pictures. If you would not like your child’s picture to be in a

Summer’s Best Two Weeks 2012, June 14-22
Registrations are due now!
Most children and youth at FPCB attend Summer One of
Summer’s Best Two Weeks at the Que.
Summer SB2W-Que, which opened in 2003, is located on the
900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir in the foothills of the Laurel
Highlands. The picturesque waterfront and top-notch facility
make the Que the perfect spot for camp. While at camp, kids
have the opportunity to swim and blob in the extra-large pool,
fly down our 1100 foot triple zipline, sail and kayak on the
lake, and compete on the arena soccer fields. Through it all,
they'll make great friends and grow in their relationship with
the Lord. The staff consists of handpicked, Christian athletes
who love kids and model Christ to them in everything they do.
Competitive team sports, recreational activities, wilderness
trips, and (most importantly) the phenomenal staff make
campers' two weeks at SB2W the best of their summer.
Places will be reserved for all returning SB2W Campers until
September 15. Return your application directly to SB2W.
Brothers and sisters will be accepted before the Waiting List
campers ONLY when applications are received by September
15. Encourage your friends and neighbors to sign up now.

This coming year children will have a chance to get together outside of their class time on Sunday mornings.
Children and their families will get to know each other as
well as many of their teachers. At least one parent/
grandparent will attend activities for age 2 – grade 2. Be
looking for dates for each age group’s activity.

A goal of Children’s Ministry at First Presbyterian Church of
Bakerstown is to share God’s Word with children and make it
a practical part of their lives. Faith Adventures are provided
to supplement the weekly lessons of the fall 2011 Sunday
mornings at Bakerstown as well as provide the opportunity to
practice God’s Word outside of the classroom. We hope that
with much support and encouragement from parents and Sunday Special teachers, your child will daily commit the Faith
Adventures to memory

From Your Mission Committee:

will be coordinating a FALL CLEAN-UP
for people in the area who need assistance
with their leaves. Please contact us if you
are any of the following:
1. Willing to lend a hand with the fall cleanup
2. Desiring assistance with the leaves at
your own house
3. Aware of someone who could use the
help
Once again, THANK YOU to everyone
who participated in the Light of Life Rescue
Mission collections. Altogether there were
22 total kits donated as well as additional
items that men in the emergency overnight
shelters will benefit greatly from.

Second U.P. Wilkinsburg and Deer
Creek Presbyterian are ready to go
back to school this fall thanks to
the GENEROUS GIVING of the
congregation. Thank you for donating 65
backpacks with school supplies!

“Pennies for Bibles” is now known as
“Change for Books and Bibles”. This
spring, the Mission Committee requested that
the “Pennies for Bibles” funds be reallocated
to a new fund named “Change for Books and
Bibles” and that the money currently in the

Golf Outing is scheduled for Monday,

A BIG THANK YOU from South Butler
Community Meals on Wheels for donating
items that are placed in “birthday bags” for
their 60 clients. These small things - such as
toilet articles, note paper, crossword puzzle
books, handkerchiefs, Scripture booklets, key
chains, seasonal items, etc. - are deeply
appreciated! To donate these items, please place them in the marked box in
the Mission Closet. The items are collected and taken to South Butler
Community Meals On Wheels once a month.

Meals on Wheels provides a hot and cold meal every Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday for those men and women in need that live in Southern Butler
County and Northern Allegheny County. Desserts are provided at
designated times of the year for Meals on Wheels by the children of
FPCB’s church school & the Women of Bakerstown of FPCB.
FPCB celebrated Lighthouse Day on August 14!
For twenty-six years, the Lighthouse Foundation has been an important part
of the local community. The Lighthouse Foundation was founded in 1985 by
the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown in response to growing needs
among local families and communities facing rising employment and emergency needs. Within a year, the Lighthouse became a freestanding nonprofit
entity, and in 1991 moved its headquarters from the old Richland Restaurant
to Middlesex Township, Butler County, at the corner of Route 8 and Cruikshank Road, three miles north of the Allegheny County line.
The Lighthouse is a treasure in our community. From Transitional Housing
to our Food Pantry, to our Produce to People Program, to our Furniture and
Appliance Warehouse, to providing Emergency Shelter, to social programming for Golden Agers and Our Singles Supper Club and Family Feast programs, to our Wheels of Work program to our free Computer Classes, the
Lighthouse Foundation makes a positive impact on everyone it touches.
Today, the Lighthouse maintains operations at six sites, annually serving
more than 6,000 clients through nearly 18,000 contacts from northern Allegheny and Butler Counties that address emergency and critical care, transitioning and empowerment needs. The Lighthouse Foundation seeks to fill
identified gaps in basic human services to needy and impoverished individuals, families, and seniors. The Lighthouse is the lone provider of housing to
homeless young adults and single parents with young children in its service
region. The Lighthouse Foundation operates through the private charitable
and public support of more than 1,500 individuals, bodies of faith, agencies,
foundations, business and service organizations.
