Goat Glands to Ranch Hands — the KFDI story with Orin Friesen
Orin Friesen has been part of the broadcasting and music scenes in Kansas since 1964. He began singing while
riding his horse to check on the cattle and fences on his family’s Nebraska farm. While he has worked for several
radio and TV stations, his voice has been heard on KFDI radio in Wichita since 1977. He is a member of the Old
Time Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1999, he founded the Prairie Rose Wranglers, the house band for the Prairie
Rose Chuckwagon Supper near Wichita. The Wranglers recorded 13 albums and performed their music around
the world, from Carnegie Hall to the Great Wall of China. Come and enjoy this fun speaker.
Thursday, April 9, 11:30 a.m.
Frankie & Phyllis Valens Anniversary Celebration
This month, we welcome legendary former pop singer Frankie Valens and his wife Phyllis. Frankie Valens
is best known for his hits in the late 1960s, such as “This Magic Moment,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and “She
Cried.” He has appeared in several movies and has written his autobiography and seven novels. Frankie and
Phyllis bring a tremendous combination of God-given talents to their presentations. Please join us for a powerful
performance.

AUXILIARY ALERT
As part of our ongoing relationship with the Wesley
Auxiliary, we will start including auxiliary news in
this newsletter.
Upcoming events
Next Meeting: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at
Cessna Conference Center at Wesley
Volunteer Recognition Banquet: 6:30 p.m. Thursday,
April 23, at Hyatt Regency Wichita, 400 W. Waterman
Wesley purchases new,
innovative technology
Cinemavision goggles — a state-of-the-art
entertainment system that allows MRI patients to
watch DVD movies, cable TV, iPad videos or listen
to music — were recently purchased by the Wesley
Medical Center Auxiliary. The $44,000 system helps
eliminate claustrophobia and scan loss in an MRI,
as well as reduces the need to sedate children for the
procedure.
“This project is really great for the kids,” said
Marsha Rogers, auxiliary president. “They will be able
to be less sedated or not at all, which is key for the
little kids who already have so much going on.”
Wesley is one of the first hospitals in south-central
Kansas to offer this new and innovative technology.
Gold Award of Excellence awarded
The Wesley Medical Center Auxiliary recently
received a Gold Award of Excellence at the Hospital
Auxiliaries of Kansas convention in Kansas City. The
award is the state’s top honor for hospital auxiliaries that
have demonstrated service and commitment to their
hospitals and communities.
Last year, some 408 volunteers contributed 49,000
hours to Wesley. The auxiliary funded $10,000 in
scholarships to area students and contributed $88,275
toward grant requests and other projects.
Looking for Ronald McDonald volunteers
Wesley Medical Center is looking for Ronald
McDonald Family Room volunteers to keep families
close to their injured or ill children. The volunteer
would greet families and help them with snacks,
laundry and TV. The volunteer would distribute family
room brochures to eligible family members. Excellent
customer service skills are necessary. The following
times are available:
• third Sunday of the month from
8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
• first and third Monday of the month from
4:30 - 8:30 p.m.
• first and third Thursday of the month from
4:30 - 8:30 p.m.
If you are interested in this essential volunteer position,
please call Carol Stricker at (316) 962-3117, or go to the
Wesley Medical Center website
(www.wesleymc.com) and select Volunteer With Us in
the Career Center pulldown menu.
Wesley Friends food coupons available during hospitalization
When Wesley Friends members are hospitalized at Wesley Medical Hospital or Galichia Heart Hospital, their
spouse, a loved one or friend receives free meal coupons to use in the hospital cafeteria. When you are admitted,
please tell the admissions office clerk that you are a Wesley Friends member. Please also call or have your loved
one call the Wesley Friends office to ensure you promptly receive the food coupons.
If you are admitted on a weekend or holiday, Wesley Friends food coupons are available at the Emergency
Department admissions desk and in the Guest Services office.

Spring into the vegetable garden
By Johnson’s Garden Center
Gardening can be a relaxing pursuit that provides
valuable exercise and healthy produce. March is
the ideal time to focus on gardening since it’s the
beginning of spring growing season, even with its
temperature ups and downs.
To get started, you need a location that receives six
to eight hours of sun, with loose, enriched soil. Raised
beds, which can be almost any size that works for you
and your space, are a great way to accomplish this.
They are also simpler to plant and maintain.
Ideally raised beds should be no more that four feet
wide for easy access from both sides to the middle.
They can be any length. With six- to 18-inch tall
sides, the boxes can be filled with a super-charged
soil mixture containing lots of compost. Investing in
building a premium root zone will pay off for years.
Early crops to plant include asparagus (from roots),
onions (from bulbs or plants) and potatoes (from seed
potatoes). Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are best
planted using small, starter plants. Direct seeding into
the ground can be done with beets, carrots, lettuce,
peas, radishes, spinach and turnips. Many of these
varieties can be planted again in late summer for a
fall crop. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers,
squash, melons and beans will not do well in the cool
soil of early spring.
If your back yard doesn’t get much light, you still
have planting options: Either plant in containers that
can be moved to sunnier spots or plant items such as
leafy greens like spinach and lettuce or some herbs
that require less light.
If you need help planning and preparing your
garden, come by Johnson’s Garden Center, where you
can use your Wesley Friends discount. If you end up
with too much produce, drop off the extra at Johnson’s
to be donated to the Kansas Food Bank.

Reserved seating
Let us help you
Village Tours has discovered reserved seating on
motor coaches provides many benefits to its travelers.
It alleviates needing to arrive early to get the seat
you want, prevents people with mobility issues from
always being in the back and encourages people
to book trips as soon as possible because seats are
initially assigned in order of reservation.
On trips longer than one day, seats are rotated to
ensure everyone has equal time in equal parts of the
coach, maximizing the experience for everyone. This
can be done with your companion for the trip. Village
Tours will always do its best to make sure you sit by
others you specify when making your reservation,
even if the reservation is taken at different times.
If you require a wheelchair or Little Rascal, we can
accommodate those needs during our bus trips. Most
electric and manual wheelchairs and Little Rascals
fit under a bus. Also, Village Tours and Travel has
a wheelchair-equipped bus that allows passengers
to load and unload without transferring from their
chairs. Please notify us in advance so we may better
assist you. If you use a manual wheelchair, it is
important for you to have a companion travel to help
you.

Livin’ it Up After the Change
Kidney disease kills more people than breast and
prostate cancer combined. The National Kidney
Foundation’s “Your Kidneys and You” program
offers a comprehensive overview of your kidneys,
risk factors for kidney disease and how to keep these
hard-working organs healthy. Those at risk for kidney
disease — anyone with diabetes, high blood pressure,
over age 60 or with a family history of kidney failure
— are especially encouraged to attend.
Back by popular demand, Dr. Melissa Hague,
gynecologist, will present a frank and lively
conversation about romance and intimacy issues
in the wiser years. Women are living longer than
ever before. It used to be that much of the joy of life
was almost over at menopause, but now it is just
the beginning. Both men and women enjoyed and
benefited from her honest discussion at last year’s
presentation. This Lunch & Learn is rated “M” for
“mature audiences” only.

Be There for Life’s
Most Heartfelt Moments
Measure your risk for heart attack or stroke in as little as 30 minutes with a coronary calcium scan.
If your family has a history of heart disease or if you
have high blood pressure or are overweight, no matter
what your age, talk to your doctor about getting your
coronary calcium score.
A coronary calcium scan at Galichia Heart Hospital
measures your risk for heart attack and stroke in as
little as 30 minutes and provides your doctor with
a cardiac calcium score from a certified cardiac
radiologist at Wichita Radiological Group.
Identify signs of heart disease early and make a plan to
be there for life’s most heartfelt moments. If your heart
wants to tell you something, it’s worth 30 minutes to
listen.

Average wait times now available for
all Wesley emergency rooms
Wesley Medical Center to build
dedicated $28 million children’s
hospital
The Wesley EmergencyCare Network is now
providing average wait times at all four of its
emergency rooms — the Wesley Medical Center main
ER and its Pediatric ER (550 N. Hillside), Galichia ER
(2610 N. Woodlawn) and Wesley West ER (8714 W.
13th St. N).
Wesley continues to be the only hospital in southcentral Kansas to provide up-to-the-minute average
wait times for its emergency rooms. Wait times are
updated every 30 minutes and are based on a rolling
four-hour average provided by Wesley’s patient
information management systems.
“We know that quicker care improves outcomes, so
we’re proud we can let our patients know where they
can receive quick, expert care, no matter where they
live,” said Dr. Francie Ekengren, Wesley’s chief medical
officer.
ER wait times can be found on
www.wesleyercheckin.com or through the free ER
Check-In mobile app available through iTunes or the
Google Play App Store.
Wesley Medical Center is expanding its children’s
services and renovating its current inpatient
pediatric areas with the construction of a $28
million dedicated children’s hospital on its campus.
Included in the project
is a complete renovation of
Wesley’s pediatric areas to
provide a safe, welcoming
environment for children
and parents. The children’s
hospital will also help
attract additional pediatric specialist physicians to
add new and enhanced services to those already
available.
Wesley is still in the process of finalizing plans
and timelines, but construction is expected to take
12-18 months.
For more information about Wesley Medical
Center and its pediatric services, please visit
www.wesleymc.com.
Women’s Hospital renovation complete
Wesley Medical Center’s $36 million Women’s Hospital renovation
is finished, featuring a warm, spacious environment with many new
amenities. The 65,000-square-foot construction project included the
renovation of 65 patient rooms and an addition of 16 new rooms.
Women who stay in Wesley’s newly renovated patient rooms enjoy Lincor
communication systems which give patients access to their clinical
information, medical records and test results. Besides watching television
programs, patients can also use the Internet, receive health education,
listen to the radio and Skype, all from their bedside.
Are you looking for a doctor?
Wesley Medical Center has a doctor referral line. Call
(316) 962-DOCS (3627) to find a physician.
Wesley hosts Baby Your
Baby fair
Wesley Medical Center will
host its seventh Annual Baby
Your Baby health education fair
Saturday, March 28, at the hospital.
The fair is designed for parents-tobe and grandparents-to-be, with
presentations on infant and child
health topics. Wesley Family Life
Education instructors will present
mini-classes and demonstrations
on a variety of topics. Tours of the
newly renovated Women’s Hospital
will be given.

JUST FOR
LAUGHS
Rest your mind
I know you have been lying awake at
night wondering why baby diapers have
brand names such as “Luvs,” “Huggies”
and “Pampers,” while undergarments
for old people are called “Depends.”
Well, here is the low down on the whole
thing.
When babies crap in their pants, people
are still gonna Luv ’em, Hug ’em and
Pamper ’em. When old people crap in
their pants, it “Depends” on who’s in the
will!
Glad I got that straightened out so you
can rest your mind.
For older patients, hospitals can
seem like a confusing maze.
Galichia is striving to make it easier.
NICHE Designated Hospital
Galichia Heart Hospital
is the only facility
in Kansas to be recognized
as “senior friendly”
by NICHE Nurses Improving
Care for Heathsystem Elders.
At Galichia, we know older patients and their families
have unique needs. That’s why our seniors appreciate
the convenient front-door parking, the comfortable
private rooms and that all our services are on the first
floor. Galichia staff also use specialized training for
communicating with older patients, ensuring that all
needs are respected. And our seniors experience this
specialized elder-care focus across a wide range of
Galichia services, from cardiology and orthopedics to
emergency care and robotic surgery.

Our greatest generation
deserves the greatest senior
care. And that’s what you’ll
find at Galichia. Learn more
