Upcoming events Next Meeting: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Cessna Conference Center at Wesley Volunteer Recognition Banquet: 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Hyatt Regency Wichita, 400 W. Waterman Wesley purchases new, innovative technology Cinemavision goggles — a state-of-the-art entertainment system that allows MRI patients to watch DVD movies, cable TV, iPad videos or listen to music — were recently purchased by the Wesley Medical Center Auxiliary. The $44,000 system helps eliminate claustrophobia and scan loss in an MRI, as well as reduces the need to sedate children for the procedure. “This project is really great for the kids,” said Marsha Rogers, auxiliary president. “They will be able to be less sedated or not at all, which is key for the little kids who already have so much going on.” Wesley is one of the first hospitals in south-central Kansas to offer this new and innovative technology. Gold Award of Excellence awarded The Wesley Medical Center Auxiliary recently received a Gold Award of Excellence at the Hospital Auxiliaries of Kansas convention in Kansas City. The award is the state’s top honor for hospital auxiliaries that have demonstrated service and commitment to their hospitals and communities. Last year, some 408 volunteers contributed 49,000 hours to Wesley. The auxiliary funded $10,000 in scholarships to area students and contributed $88,275 toward grant requests and other projects. Looking for Ronald McDonald volunteers Wesley Medical Center is looking for Ronald McDonald Family Room volunteers to keep families close to their injured or ill children. The volunteer would greet families and help them with snacks, laundry and TV. The volunteer would distribute family room brochures to eligible family members. March is the ideal time to focus on gardening since it’s the beginning of spring growing season, even with its temperature ups and downs. To get started, you need a location that receives six to eight hours of sun, with loose, enriched soil. Raised beds, which can be almost any size that works for you and your space, are a great way to accomplish this. They are also simpler to plant and maintain. Ideally raised beds should be no more that four feet wide for easy access from both sides to the middle. They can be any length. With six- to 18-inch tall sides, the boxes can be filled with a super-charged soil mixture containing lots of compost. Investing in building a premium root zone will pay off for years. Early crops to plant include asparagus (from roots), onions (from bulbs or plants) and potatoes (from seed potatoes). Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are best planted using small, starter plants. Direct seeding into the ground can be done with beets, carrots, lettuce, peas, radishes, spinach and turnips. Many of these varieties can be planted again in late summer for a fall crop. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, squash, melons and beans will not do well in the cool soil of early spring. If your back yard doesn’t get much light, you still have planting options: Either plant in containers that can be moved to sunnier spots or plant items such as leafy greens like spinach and lettuce or some herbs that require less light. If you need help planning and preparing your garden, come by Johnson’s Garden Center, where you can use your Wesley Friends discount. If you end up with too much produce, drop off the extra at Johnson’s to be donated to the Kansas Food Bank. A moment with... It alleviates needing to arrive early to get the seat you want, prevents people with mobility issues from always being in the back and encourages people to book trips as soon as possible because seats are initially assigned in order of reservation. On trips longer than one day, seats are rotated to ensure everyone has equal time in equal parts of the coach, maximizing the experience for everyone. This can be done with your companion for the trip. Village Tours will always do its best to make sure you sit by others you specify when making your reservation, even if the reservation is taken at different times. If you require a wheelchair or Little Rascal, we can accommodate those needs during our bus trips. Most electric and manual wheelchairs and Little Rascals fit under a bus. Also, Village Tours and Travel has a wheelchair-equipped bus that allows passengers to load and unload without transferring from their chairs. Please notify us in advance so we may better assist you. If you use a manual wheelchair, it is important for you to have a companion travel to help you. 7 wesleyfriends.com A PICTURE’S WORTH A Wesley Friends members having fun at recent events. • Wesley VIP privileges: • Complimentary packet of meal tickets for your care partner • A visit from a Wesley Friend • Travel and group trips • Wesley Rehabilitation Hospital meal tickets • Notary services • Dental plan with Delta Dental (Open enrollment available in September.) • Discounts: • ABC Taxi & American Cab • Adaptive Living • Always There Senior Care • Audiology services • Botanica • Chaucer Estates • City Steam Clean (carpet & upholstery cleaning) • Collision Center of Andover • Comfort Systems • Cholesterol, glucose and PSA screenings • Curves: 75% off sign-up fee • First Gear: 10% off • Four Seasons Cleaners: 15% off • Hair 2000 • Hair Krafters: 10% off • Hair Mechanix: 20% off • Handyman Matters ....................... continued on page 9 8 A THOUSAND WORDS! 9 BENEFITS ... continued from page 8 • Hart Pharmacy & Medical Home Equipment: 15% off custom-fitted shoes • Health Strategies Fitness Center • Home Healthcare Connection • Home Technology Solutions emergency response system • Jason’s Deli: 10% off • Jiffy Lube: 20% off • Johnson’s Garden Centers: 10% off • 1-800-JunkPro • Kansas Truck Equipment Co. • Larksfield Place • Larry Bud’s Sports Bar and Grill: 15% • Lifestyle Strategies’ classes for health and weight management • Orpheum Theatre movies: $3 Tickets • Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper • Reflection Ridge Adult Living Community • Right at Home • Salon Brands: 20% off • Sedgwick Plaza • SPECS Eyewear • Tillie’s Flower Shop • Wesley Cafeteria & Four Corners Cafe: 25% off • Welch Cleaners: 15% off • Wesley Inn • Wesley Outpatient Pharmacy • Wichita Thunder Hockey • Wichita Wingnuts wesleyfriends.com Call us if you go on vacation or move Please let us know if you go on vacation, are temporarily away or have moved. Those at risk for kidney disease — anyone with diabetes, high blood pressure, over age 60 or with a family history of kidney failure — are especially encouraged to attend. Both men and women enjoyed and benefited from her honest discussion at last year’s presentation. This Lunch & Learn is rated “M” for “mature audiences” only. 10 Be There for Life’s Most Heartfelt Moments Measure your risk for heart attack or stroke in as little as 30 minutes with a coronary calcium scan. Tours of the newly renovated Women’s Hospital will be given. 15 wesleyfriends.com JUST FOR LAUGHS Rest your mind I know you have been lying awake at night wondering why baby diapers have brand names such as “Luvs,” “Huggies” and “Pampers,” while undergarments for old people are called “Depends.” Well, here is the low down on the whole thing. When babies crap in their pants, people are still gonna Luv ’em, Hug ’em and Pamper ’em. When old people crap in their pants, it “Depends” on who’s in the will! Glad I got that straightened out so you can rest your mind. For older patients, hospitals can seem like a confusing maze. Galichia is striving to make it easier. NICHE Designated Hospital Galichia Heart Hospital is the only facility in Kansas to be recognized as “senior friendly” by NICHE Nurses Improving Care for Heathsystem Elders. At Galichia, we know older patients and their families have unique needs. That’s why our seniors appreciate the convenient front-door parking, the comfortable private rooms and that all our services are on the first floor. Galichia staff also use specialized training for communicating with older patients, ensuring that all needs are respected. And our seniors experience this specialized elder-care focus across a wide range of Galichia services, from cardiology and orthopedics to emergency care and robotic surgery. 16 Our greatest generation deserves the greatest senior care. And that’s what you’ll find at Galichia. Learn more at wesleymc.com 2610 N. Woodlawn Wesley Friends is published by Wesley Medical Center 550 N. Hillside, Wichita, KS 67214-4976.
