NOVEMBER 2015 ISSUE THE WHISTLESTOP Director’s Update Staff Update We were so sad to say goodbye last month to our Morning Office Manager Lauren Woods. Lauren resigned to take a full-time position as an editor for the website Womanista.com. We will miss her friendliness and warm smile, but wish her all the best in her new role! Stay tuned! I know that memberships for many of you will expire at the end of this year, and we are currently discussing whether a membership renewal incentive will be offered again. We hope to have this finalized during the first week of November. Please stay tuned for announcements and be sure to check the December newsletter for the policy. We hope to have ALL of you renew with us for 2016! We hope to see you here soon! Kelsey Mahaffey Thanksgiving Center Closings The Center will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 26th and Friday, November 27th.We will open with normal hours on Monday, November 30th. It’s Big Bingo time again on Thursday, November 12th. At 11:30 a.m. partake of a Whitt’s barbecue sandwich, potato chips, dessert and tea before trying your luck. Madison Travelers to Quilt Show and The Factory The Madison Travelers are gallivanting to Franklin for the Historic Quilt show where 100 quilts including Civil War, traditional, art and modern quilts will be displayed. Afterward, try out Lyrics located in The Factory. Lyrics describes themselves as a “seasonal southern fusion restaurant with a vibrant melody of flavors.” They offer soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and other crowd-pleasing dishes. Beforehand, dig into good Southern cooking at Red Rooster. *Note: Bring cash for shopping with the A mish.* Wednesday, November 11 - 9:30 a.m. - $18 + Lunch The Gadabouts to Ave Maria Grotto We have a new quarterly trip planning club! The Gadabouts invite you to join them on their maiden voyage to Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman, AL. First, stop at Rumor’s Deli which specializes in warm sandwiches and was featured in Southern Living magazine before taking in St. Bernard Abbey. St. Bernard is home to the only Benedictine Order in Alabama and to the world famous Ave Maria Grotto. The tour guide will lead you through the 125 miniatures that make up the grotto, which are reproductions of famous churches, shrines and buildings from throughout the world. Included, is a mini Jerusalem. The Grotto covers an area of over three acres which sees visitors from all over the globe. Be sure to stop in the gift shop for Christmas ornaments, Monk’s bread (not always available) and other goodies before returning. *Note: This is a 2 1/2 hour drive plus the time it will take for a bathroom stop. This trip involves walking to see the replicas.* Friday, November 13 - 8:30 a.m. - $18 + Lunch Hiking Club The Hiking Club’s last outing of the season will take them to Fontanel to discover the hiking trails and scenery around the beautiful countryside. Once there, choose between two trails or meander a little of both. The unpaved trailhead begins across from the Woods at Fontanel Music Venue and extends up and over the ridge behind the Fontanel Mansion. The paved trailhead can be found behind Prichard’s Distillery. Retire to Whites Creek Bistro at Fontanel for sandwich fare. Monday, November 16 – 8:30 a.m. - $6 + Lunch Supper Club Roll out to Cool Springs for a fun night of Italian food at Buca di Beppo! Buca di Beppo serves its fare family-style while surrounding its patrons in an eclectic and vintage setting which includes surprises such as wine bottles on the ceiling. Through Monday, Dec. 7th, we’ll have collection bins for donations of toys and other small items. All donations will benefit the children of Nashville area veterans through the Nashville Veterans Center. A suggested donation list will be available at the front desk on November 9th. On Tuesday, Dec. 8th from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., FiftyForward Knowles will host a gift wrapping party. A free lunch will be served to those who come volunteer to help wrap the gifts. Stroll by the Spotlight Bulletin Board to see the submissions and winners of the Coloring Contest Awards. Also, be sure to stop by the Social Room to enjoy the stacked box art mural completed by Madison Station members and displayed at a center-wide Artober exhibition. We are very proud of our artists, the new ones and the seasoned! Vern Pilder worked for many hours to dream up and execute the sketch that made the stacked box art mural a reality. Thank you for sticking with it, Vern, and delighting us all with your creativity. A special thank you to Sara Jo Beliles for being Vern’s faithful helper and running errands! Even though our address is 301 Madison Street, we are physically located at the end of Douglas Street. There is a sign out front that says ‘FiftyForward Madison Station.’ Parking and entrance are in the back. FiftyForward Madison Station 301 Madison St. Madison, TN 37115 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED Bringing Thanksgiving Beginning November 16th, Christian Cooperative Ministry will distribute more than 250 special food boxes to bring Thanksgiving to the tables of many of our Madison neighbors in need. Thanksgiving food boxes will be given in addition to the standard food boxes that are regularly distributed. How can you help? FiftyForward Madison Station will be accepting donations at the front desk of the items needed to prepare these special boxes. Suggested donations are instant potatoes, stuffing mix, canned pineapple, canned sweet potatoes, cornbread mix, macaroni & cheese, canned corn, canned green beans, cake mix, small bags of flour, small bottles of oil, and chicken broth. All donations are most appreciated. Thank you for helping to bring Thanksgiving to the tables of Madison! Deck the Halls Monday, November 30 Join us in making everything merry and bright around the Center by decking the halls in grand Christmas-style! All are welcome to help at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 30th. In appreciation of your time and hard work, it will be our pleasure to treat all those participating to a pizza lunch! Prize Challenge Bert Montgomery was the first to turn in the Rebus Puzzle from October’s newsletter. Congrats, Bert! Be the first to give the correct answer to the Thanksgiving Sudoku puzzle to Sam (in person or in her box) to win the prize. Each row, column and mini-grid of the puzzle must contain the letters MAYFLOWER.
