Harborfields PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER V August 2015 Blood Drive ISIONS Tuesday, August 25th, 1:00 - 7:00 PM of experience 2015 Senior Art Show September 1st - 29th There’s still time to create your painting, drawing, photograph, or sculpture to display in our Annual Senior Art Show. Eligible artists aged 60 and older can pick up the Exhibitors Agreement.at the Reference Desk or online at harbseniors. blogspot.com. Artwork drop-off date is Tuesday, August 25th between 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM. All are invited to the Artists’ Reception on September 12th from 3:00 - 4:50 PM Every two seconds someone needs blood. Summer marks the height of “trauma season,” the busiest time of the year for emergency rooms and trauma centers nationwide. The New York Blood Center is asking the Harborfields community to remember your neighbors and make plans to donate blood. Your donation will help save up to three lives! Please share this lifesaving gift. Call the Reference Desk to make an appointment. For questions concerning medical eligibility, call 1-800-688-0900. To be eligible to donate, you must bring a photo ID, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be between 16 - 75 (16 with parental permission, and anyone over 75 must provide a doctor’s note), no tattoos for the past 12 months, eat well and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating. Young Adult Summer Reading Club Bowling Party Friday, August 7th, 4:00 – 6:00 PM All students who were active participants and have read at least eight books in the 2015 Young Adult Summer Reading Club are invited to celebrate their successful summer of reading at our end-of-the-summer bowling party at Larkfield Lanes in East Northport. Photo Composition & Lighting Sage Leaf Pendant Good photos are a result of determining the best shooting criteria, following photographic rules such as considering the rule of thirds, subject space, color, contrast and sometimes breaking the rules. John Spoltore will teach you how to evaluate the scene, compose your image, determine lighting conditions and adjust your camera settings for professional-looking photos. Please register. Using non-toxic copper clay, jewelry artisan Jo Ann Wadler will show you how to create a hand-crafted pendant. Each sage leaf pendant will be uniquely your creation. There is a $10 fee. In-person registration is accepted at the Reference Desk. The instructor will fire your pendant and you may pick it up at the Library on or after August 12th. Monday, August 3rd, 7:00 PM BBQ 101 Thursday, August 6th, 6:00 PM Join us for a delicious BBQ dinner at the Library. Competitive Pit Master Brian Collins will bring his 10-foot smoker to the Library to demonstrate and prepare your dinner. Weather permitting, you will be able to watch him as he prepares a variety of BBQ items. Then, while you enjoy your dinner indoors, he will discuss all things BBQ, including cuts of meat, setting up your grill for indirect cooking, and more. There is a $10 per person fee which includes dinner. In-person registration at the Reference Desk, by August 3rd is required. Tuesday, August 4th, 6:30 PM Foods to Travel By Thursday, August 13th, 7:00 PM Jeanne Schnupp will prepare a selection of international desserts from her illustrated cookbook Savvy Sightseer’s Foods to Travel By. You will enjoy traditional tasty treats from three countries while hearing about their background and some fun food facts. While you savor your samples, Jeanne will whisk you away on a visual tour of the countries with her stunning photo display. Recipes will be provided for you to take home. She has studied in Paris, and with a variety of professional artists at the Art League of Long Island. The inspiration for her paintings comes from the three countries she calls home. In this exhibition, she portrays her passion for art in the memories of her past. You should have a clear goal of what you would like to learn during your training session such as how to: • Download eBooks or audiobooks to a device. • Set up an email account. •Set up a Facebook account. •Learn to use Library databases for research. •Use the Library Catalog from home to reserve and renew materials. Librarians are instructors, not tech support, and cannot troubleshoot or fix malfunctioning laptops, devices or software. Sessions are available at various times during the week. Museum passes may be reserved up to 60 days in advance from the Library Website or through the Reference Desk. You also may purchase discount admission tickets or vouchers to the following venues: American Museum of Natural History, Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center, The Long Island Game Farm and the Bronx Zoo, at the Circulation Desk.
