May 2015 7th Annual Friends Flea Market Friends of the Library Fundraiser Saturday, May 16th, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM (Rain or Shine) Your Healthy & Happy Pet Thursday, May 14th, 7:00 PM Dr. Elizabette Cohen, author and WCBS Radio Show Host of Your Healthy & Happy Pet since 2004 will entertain us with funny stories from her years as a Veterinarian, many of which are found in her book Most of My Patients Wear Fur. She will also discuss important considerations for keeping your pet healthy during the summer months, behavior modification and ways to prolong your pet’s life. Her black lab lived to the age of 20! There will be time for questions and attendees will receive a free gift for either their dog or cat. Please register to attend and remember that this program is for human family members only. The vendors participating this year will be offering plants, jewelry, antiques, household bric-a-brac, unique handcrafted items, collectibles, clothing and more. In the event of inclement weather, the Flea Market will move to the Library Meeting Rooms. Please inquire with the Library Program and Publicity Office, there may still be vendor space available. A Musical Alphabet from the Island Hills Chorus Sunday, June 7th, 3:00 PM Spring Cleaning - Shredding Day Saturday, May 9th, 10 AM - 12 Noon You may bring up to three (3) bags or boxes of paper per household to be shredded. No commercial business documents allowed! Drive your car up to the shredding truck that will be parked in the circular driveway, then watch the closed-circuit monitor as your documents are being shredded. Holiday Hours The Library will be closed on Sunday, May 10th, Sunday, May 24th and Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day. This all-female choral group is a local chapter of the Sweet Adelines International. They will present an “ABC Book” of musical terminology enlightened by song. You’ll hear music from the Broadway stage and familiar jazz standards. If you enjoy four-part harmony, in the barbershop style, you will love this show! Mah Jongg Social Club Spanish 101 Mondays, May 11th, 18th and June 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd, 1:30 - 3:30 PM Learn basic conversational Spanish from Argentinian native Victoria Journade. You will start with the alphabet and work toward simple phrases and greetings in this six-week workshop. Class size is limited, so you must register. The Redesigned PSAT and SAT Exam Informational Meeting Tuesday, May 12th, 7:00 - 8:00 PM The PSAT/NMSQT® will change in October 2015 followed by a new SAT in March 2016. The redesigned PSAT and SAT are significantly different from the current versions of the exams. Friends of the Library Bus Trip Little Book Shop The Culinary Institute & FDR Home Open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 AM - 4 PM Join the Friends of the Library for a delicious three-course lunch in the Culinary Institute’s Caterina De’ Medici Restorante featuring Spalla Di Vitello (roasted veal with seasonal vegetables) as our entree. After lunch we will visit the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt for a guided tour. The cost of this trip, which includes transportation, lunch, tour, and all gratuities, is $90 per person. Current members of the Friends of the Library, may register by telephone only at 9:00 AM on Friday, May 8th and pay for their reservation at the Reference Desk by Tuesday, May 12th. Beginning Saturday, May 9th, if space remains, the trip will be open to anyone, but reservations with payments must be made in-person only at the Reference Desk. No refunds unless we are able to fill your space from a waiting list. All Children’s Books are now $5 a bag, in the Friends Little Book Shop. Friday, June 19th, Bus departs from the Library at 8:30 AM and returns at approximately 6:00 PM Veteran’s Benefits Enrollment Event Thursday, May 21st, 10:00 AM - 2;00 PM Find out about new or improved Veterans Affairs (VA) programs, including MyHealtheVet, VA Caregiver Support services, Disabled American Veteran (DAV) transportation opportunities, and more from Northport VA Medical Center’s Community Outreach Team. The mobile unit will be parked in the front circular driveway of the Library. VA staff will assist in the application process, offer Veterans hypertension screenings and provide first-time physical exams for new VA enrollees. Preregistration is required.
