Dear Belhaven Fans,
From the President
It is my privilege to welcome you to another exciting edition
of Blazers Baseball! Our student-athletes and their coaches
have been working hard to ensure that this season will be
one of the most memorable in the institution’s more than 50
years of intercollegiate athletics competition.
Our players are building a tradition that goes far beyond the
field, preparing them to become their best in life, not only
in their sport. These programs are living out our mission:
“to prepare students academically and spiritually to serve
Christ Jesus in their careers, in human relationships, and
in the world of ideas.” And I’m proud of our entire Athletics
Department, because it fully integrates faith in to every
aspect of athletics competition.
Thank you for being part of the Belhaven Athletics support team, and I do so hope you
enjoy the upcoming season.
Go Blazers!

12:1 student to Faculty ratio
At Belhaven Our Standard is Christ, and we believe Christ is
about relationships. He taught, He lived among His disciples,
so we teach and live among our students. Our 12:1 student to
faculty ratio certainly means a comfortable class size, but it also
notes availability—whether you have questions after class or
want one-on-one advice about class schedules or changing
a major. To a Belhaven professor, 12:1 is an opportunity to
share a meal with students, to mentor after class, and to
have a ministry that reaches far beyond their lectures.

organizations make student leadership a vital part of campus life.
Join a club or intramural team, participate in campus ministries,

Blazers Ready for Title Run in 2014
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team hopes to be back in the hunt for another Southern
States Athletic Conference championship when the club takes the field in January. The Blazers
finished the 2013 campaign with an overall record of 37-21 and claimed fourth place in the SSAC
regular season standings with a league mark of 18-12.
SEason Outlook
There were some uncertainties just prior to the start of the year after a rash of injuries and other
circumstances that left the ranks thin, especially in the pitching department. However, the coaches
and players met those challenges head on and rose above the difficulties to produce an exciting year
and a Maloney Series title.
“It was really a different season for us this year,” said Head Coach Hill Denson. “By the time we were
ready to start the season we had lost nine of our top pitchers. However, it turned out that we had a
good year winning 37 games while finishing fourth in the league after the regular season. We had
some guys step up and that was a big key to our success.”
With a solid group of returning players in addition to a strong recruiting class the potential is there for
an exciting 2014 season.
Infield
The Belhaven infield will feature a number of new faces this season, but one of the key returners is
shortstop Josiah Richard. Richard, a senior from Charleston, ME was a stalwart defensively in the
middle of the Blazers infield in 2013. Richard boasted an outstanding fielding percentage of .969 and
committed only seven errors all season in 224 total chances.
At the plate, Richard came up with some key hits and led the team in sacrifice bunts with nine.
Richard ended the season with a .235 batting average and drove in seven runs in 102 at bats.
One of the new faces on the infield this spring will be second baseman Paul Pickerrell. Pickerrell, a
native of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, prepped at John Hardin High School before heading to Volunteer
State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee. After one year at VSCC, Pickerrell decided to join
Head Baseball Coach Josh Hoffpauir and the Wildcats of Pearl River Community College.
Pickerrell finished the year at PRCC as one of the teams leading hitters, anchoring the middle of the
order for the Wildcats. Pearl River finished the season with a 41-14 record and was one win away
from the NJCAA Division II World Series. Pickerrell hit .371 with 17 extra base hits, including 13
doubles, three triples, and one homerun. He was also second on the team with 43 RBI and third with
12 stolen bases.
“We are thrilled that Paul has decided to further his playing career and education at Belhaven,” said
Assistant Coach Andrew Gipson. “He is a blue collar, hard working guy that has the ability to make an
immediate impact at multiple positions. He is an outstanding player and an even better individual. We
are excited that he and his family will be a part of our program for the next two years.”
After a strong showing in fall practice and the Green and Gold Series, freshman Dan Ammirati is one
of the favorites to start at third base. Ammirati, an infielder who can also catch from Maspeth, NY,
prepped at Holy Cross High School where he hit .320 with a pair of doubles, a home run, and four
stolen bases in 2012. Ammirati played for the Midville Dodgers select team during the summer of
2012 and batted .358 with 10 doubles, a home run and a triple.
2014 Belhaven Baseball

Ammirati was named to the New York Post All-Queens Team as a junior in 2012. He was also a
varsity team captain and a member of the National Honor Society and Principal's list.
“We are excited to add Dan Ammirati to our baseball team for the 2014 season,” said Denson. “He is
a quality player and a great student. Dan is a third baseman that will also get some work behind the
plate as a catcher. He has the ability to contribute early for us and will hopefully do so.”
Outfield
The Belhaven outfield could be one of the fastest in the conference with returners Reagan Rutledge
and Dominick Francia back on patrol again this season. Rutledge and Francia each rewrote the
school record books for most steals in a season. Both players completed 2013 with 42, two better
than the previous record of 40 set in 2009 by Chanse Cooper.
Francia, a senior from Mobile, Ala, also had a strong 2013 season at the plate finishing the year with
a .276 batting average. Francia had nine doubles, two triples, and 16 runs batted in to go along with
his 42 stolen bases.
James Peterson, a key acquisition in the offseason for Belhaven, could provide help at a number of
positions including the outfield. Peterson, a native of Zachary, Louisiana, prepped at Oak Forest
Academy and played summer baseball for former Blazer, Robert Young, with Jays Baseball before
signing with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Peterson redshirted as a freshman at Lafayette
and was on the team with current Blazer, Dominick Francia, for one year before committing to
Belhaven.
“James is a great addition to our ball club,” said Gipson. “He will fit in well to our system, is very
athletic and has the potential to steal some bases. The thing I'm most excited to see though is his
development at the plate. He has the potential to do some special things at the plate over the next
few years. He also has the ability to play multiple positions on the field, which is an added bonus. We
are thrilled to have him on our club.”
Pitching
The Belhaven pitching staff will be led and anchored by returning starter Chris Good. Good, a left
handed pitcher, was named to the 2014 NAIA Baseball Preseason All-America Team when it was
announced by the national office in the fall. Good, a native Forney, TX, led the Blazers pitching staff
with a 14-3 record and was a mainstay in the weekend starting rotation in 2013. He was also a 2nd
Team NAIA All-American following the 2013 season.
Good, who will be a junior for the Blazers in 2014, finished the 2013 campaign second in the NAIA for
most wins (14) and paced the Blazers with a 2.18 ERA. Good fired five shutouts and worked 10
complete games in 16 total starts in 2013. In his 18 overall appearances, Good accumulated 103.1
innings and allowed just 31 runs on 89 hits with 51 strikeouts. Opposing hitters were held to a .237
batting average.
Returning to the bullpen in 2013 is another left hander Josh Rogers. Rogers, a senior from Byram,
Miss, was an SSAC 2nd Team All-Conference selection following the 2013 season. Rogers appeared
in 31 games and made the most of his opportunities. Rogers was 5-2 on the season with four saves
and an ERA of 2.69. Rogers was fourth in the SSAC for fewest runs allowed with 23.

SEason Outlook
Rutledge, a junior from The Woodlands, TX, was also one of Belhaven’s top hitters a year ago.
Rutledge batted .295 with four doubles, three triples, a home run, and 17 runs batted in. He also led
the team in runs scored with 42.
Three newcomers to the pitching staff are Ben Allison, Rayko Bellmas, and Boomer Scarborough.
Allison is from Batavia, Ill and prepped at Batavia High. A right-handed pitcher from Kishwaukee
College, Allison was a 2012 Academic All-Conference representative and was nominated for the
Student Athlete of the Year in 2013 by the NJCAA. In two years combined at Kishwaukee, Allison
kept opponents in check with a 3.03 ERA while striking out 49 in 77 innings pitched. He recorded four
wins and three saves during his career at Kishwaukee.
SEason Outlook
Bellmas, a right-handed pitcher from Miami, Fl, makes his way to Belhaven through Cisco College,
who participated in the NJCAA Division I regional’s this spring. Prior to attending Cisco, Bellmas
pitched for Miami-Dade College, a perennial power in junior college baseball, his freshman year.
Bellmas was a 6A All-Star in Florida his senior year of high school and was named 2nd Team All
Dade County.
Scarborough comes to Belhaven by way of the University of Southern Mississippi. Scarborough
prepped at St. Stanislaus High School where he was a 2-time 4A All-State Selection and a State
Champion in three sports during his senior year. In his years at USM, he compiled a 3-3 record in 27
appearances. In 89 innings, he posted a 3.34 ERA while striking out 62 and holding opponents to a
.230 batting average.
“We are excited about these additions to our ball club,” says Gipson. “These are all quality guys that
we will expect to compete for roles on our pitching staff this spring. Each of them are hard-working
individuals with a blue-collar mindset. We are thrilled that they've decided to continue their
educational and baseball journey at Belhaven.”
Overview
The Blazers are anxious to get the season started and see what the 2014 club can do. With a number
of new faces on the team this year one of the keys will be the ability to gel as a group. Also, as is the
case with most teams, pitching will play a major role on the team this year. Belhaven hopes to use the
speed of their position players as a weapon on both offense and defense. The potential for high
stolen base numbers is certainly possible with the lineup Belhaven can put on the field.
The schedule for 2014 will feature some outstanding non-conference opponents along with familiar
SSAC rivals in Auburn-Montgomery, Mobile, Spring Hill, Loyola, Faulkner, Blue Mountain College,
Bethel University (TN) and William Carey. There are a number of key non-conference games on the
2014 slate including LSU-Alexandria, Tougaloo College (MS), Missouri Baptist College,
Campbellsville University (KY), and Culver Stockton College. The Cowboy Maloney Series between
Belhaven, Millsaps, and Mississippi College will be contested again in 2014, with the Blazers playing
Millsaps and Mississippi College three times each.
Belhaven will open the regular season at home on January 31st at 4:00 PM in game one of a three
game series against LSU-Alexandria at Smith Wills Stadium.

USM as a nationally recognized baseball power.
“We lost a very talented senior group last year, but we have a solid group of players returning this year with

makes us very confident that we will be able to challenge for a Southern States Athletic Conference title.”
Coach Denson enjoyed many years of success while at USM, including being named Metro Conference
(now Conference USA) Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1990; having 12 consecutive winning seasons (19861997); 42 game winning season in 1990 (school record); NCAA National Tournament bids in 1990 and 1991;
Eight USM players being named NCAA All-Americans; and 35 USM players signed to professional baseball
contracts.
Prior to his tenure at USM, Coach Denson served as the Director of In-Game Promotions for the Nashville
Sounds, then New York Yankees minor league baseball club. He also served as an assistant baseball coach at
Vanderbilt University.

HS, Manhattan HS and Chamberlain-Hunt Military Academy.
A native of Bay Springs, Mississippi, Hill Denson is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi,

The SSAC
Belhaven Athletics and the SSAC
The Belhaven Department of Athletics was accepted as a member of the Southern States Athletic
Conference, beginning with the 2010-11 academic year. The Blazers joined fellow former Gulf
Coast Athletic Conference members William Carey University, Spring Hill College, the University
of Mobile, and Loyola University of New Orleans in the SSAC. This move did not affect the sport of
football who remained a part of the Mid-South Conference.

“As our athletic programs have grown and become increasingly competitive, the Southern States
conference is the right home for Belhaven,” said Belhaven President Dr. Roger Parrott. “We find
ourselves more often in the national rankings for our teams, and this conference gives us the best
platform to compete for national championships. Like the SEC of small colleges, the Southern
States may be the most competitive conference in the nation, but we believe Belhaven will do
well among this group of schools who share our mission to quality small college athletics that is
committed to a foundation of character building.”

Belhaven Director of Athletics Scott Little said, “We lead our student-athletes to compete and
mature, and membership in the SSAC was a significant step in that process. This move provided
a strong conference affiliation, positioned us well nationally, and still allowed us to retain traditional
conference rivalries. Fans will enjoy the high level of competition they’ll see from even more
schools across the Southeast and around the nation.”

The SSAC expansion provided each sport with at least one automatic bid to the NAIA National
Tournament and most sports will qualify for multiple bids from the conference.
About the Southern States Athletic Conference:
The SSAC, traditionally a highly competitive conference in the NAIA, was incorporated under the
name Georgia Alabama Carolina Conference, Inc. in 1999 and renamed the Southern States
Athletic Conference, Inc. in June 2005. The current member institutions of higher learning are
located in the southern states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and
Tennessee. There are more than 35,000 active students at its 15 schools and close to 3,500
student-athletes. SSAC schools have more than 125,000 alumni still residing in this same
southern-state geography. The SSAC, which has offices in Norcross, Georgia, has won 14
national championships since 1999, with 114 NAIA All-Americans and 192 NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
